[en] VOICE COMES FROM INSIDE A BODY: ON VOICE-RECORDS MADE BY POETS / [pt] A VOZ VEM DE DENTRO DA PESSOA: DAS GRAVAÇÕES DE VOZ FEITAS POR POETASCATARINA LINS ANTUNES DE OLIVEIRA 21 August 2018 (has links)
[en] This research analyzes the act of recording the voice when made by poets. Looking at this type of recording as a possible way of writing, and understanding it also as an artistic practice more than merely a kind of archive, the poems, written and recorded, are analyzed here mainly as regards their relationship between their graphic and sound dimension. The American poet Frank O Hara is taken and analyzed as the main example of this practice.

[en] MIRROR-STONES: A CONVERSATION WITH THE WRITINGS OF JIMMIE DURHAM / [pt] PEDRAS-ESPELHO: UMA CONVERSA COM A ESCRITA DE JIMMIE DURHAMMAIRA EUSTACHIO VOLTOLINI 21 August 2018 (has links)
[en] The dissertation presents a reading of works by the visual artist and writer Jimmie Durham (b. 1940, –). Writings are a fundamental part of his work, either as essays and poems or as part of paintings, sculptures, and installations. Since he was born in the USA, with an alleged Scottish and Cherokee ancestry, his thinking transits through different cosmovisions. He teases language, he challenges identity limitations, re-elaborates geopolitics, and disturbs the hegemonic notion of History. His body of work exposes the absurd of normality and points out to the permanence of segregation, oppression, and exploitation mechanisms of colonial origin. It instigates Western thinking to do an auto-criticism. This dissertation also approaches texts and works he has developed to the specific Brazilian context, and includes an exclusive conversation with the artist. Durham catalyzes imagination towards another mode of existence, in which there are cosmology and temporality intrinsic to Amerindian languages. This dissertation has a decolonizing aspiration that is triggered by the pulse of the aesthetic and intellectual potency of Jimmy Durham s work.

[pt] INTELIGÊNCIA E CAOS: ENSAIO E FORMA EM MAX BENSE E ROGÉRIO DUARTE / [en] INTELLIGENCE AND CHAOS: ESSAY AND FORM IN MAX BENSE AND ROGÉRIO DUARTEFERNANDA RODRIGUES LEMOS 03 December 2020 (has links)
[en] Inteligência e Caos – Ensaio e Forma em Max Bense e Rogério Duarte relates the
essay Brazilian Intelligence – a Cartesian reflection (2009), written by the German
philosopher Max Bense (1910-1990), between 1961-1964, to the book Tropicaos (2003),
a collection of texts by the Brazilian designer Rogério Duarte (1939-2016). Conducted by
a single loose thread – which brings us especially to the early 1960 s, when Rogério
Duarte was a student of Max Bense for a short period –, the research aims to fill a gap, or
at least collaborate for a future filling, between thought these two multidisciplinary
scholars (not well known to the general public) and who were simultaneously in contact
with important cultural personalities of the time. From 1959 to 1969, based on facts and
deviations, I worked with some aesthetic intersections between the Brazilian designer and
the German philosopher, investigating how artistic exchanges with different avant-garde
and intellectuals might have contributed to the articulation of national cultural
production. I seek to problematize how bensean thinking about Brazilian intelligence
might have designed an idea of the future for Brazil and how its categories might have
taken shape in Rogério Duarte s work. And, still, how the fusion of the Cartesian spirit
(present in the urbanism of the city of Brasília) with the tropical spirit (found in the city
of Rio de Janeiro) could represent this Brazilian intelligence and be operated by the
aesthetic ordering of Rogério Duarte. So, I set up a Graphic Organizer to present the
interactions between Max Bense and Rogério Duarte with other intellectuals of that time.

[en] LISTENING TO THE INARTICULATE LANGUAGE IN THE WORK OF GUIMARÃES ROSA / [pt] À ESCUTA DA LÍNGUA INARTICULADA EM GUIMARÃES ROSALUIZA NOVAES TELLES RIBEIRO 28 June 2018 (has links)
[en] The present thesis approaches the writing of Guimarães Rosa from the perspective of the inarticulate. It attends to those occasions in which his writing takes language to its intensive limit, at which it incorporates animal noises (grunting, howling, cawing, chirping, bleating, hissing, wheezing), natural sounds (wind, water, fire, etc.), and the musical register. Exploring the singular manner in which Rosa cultivates sonorities invested with anarchical and creative forces, the study shows that one of the most striking aspects of his work is the way it gives voice to the experience of the inarticulate within language. Such an experience manifests itself as a privileged site of destabilization of the traditional frontiers between what is conventionally called language and what is called life. This serves to reveal the material body of language as an irreducible condition for the creation of an intensive connection with life through literature. Rosa s thinking, as it is presented through his writing, is also put into dialogue with Gilles Deleuze s and Felix Guattari s notion of the intensive language and Friedrich Nietzsche s account of the Dionysian experience of music. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first approaches the inarticulate in the novella Buriti, from Corpo de Baile. It focusses on the character Chief Zequiel, who possesses a prodigious auditory sensitivity that allows him to perceive very slight, night-time sounds and convert them into a language that borders on squealing, howling, the whispering of the wind. The following chapter draws parallels between the reintroduction of noise into contemporary music by John Cage in particular and the intrusion of a multitude
of non-lexicographic sonorities into Rosa s writing. This musical analogy is also intertwined with an interpretation of the neglected novella, A estória do homem do Pinguelo, from Estas Estórias. The third and final chapter discusses the alliance between poetry, music and inarticulate language at the heart of Rosa s literary oeuvre. It regards his creative process as a transmutation of the pre-articulate forces and affects present in sounds into a poetic language that is intimately intertwined with musicality. Finally, it proposes a reading of Cara-de-bronze from Corpo de Baile and Duelo from Sagarana.

[pt] RABISCA E PUBLICA: JUVENTUDES E ESTRATÉGIAS DE VISIBILIDADE SOCIAL E MIDIÁTICA DO PASSINHO CARIOCA AO ATIVISMO DE NOVA ORLEANS / [en] SCRATCH AND PUBLISH: YOUTH AND STRATEGIES OF SOCIAL AND MEDIA VISIBILITY FROM THE PASSINHO CARIOCA TO THE ACTIVISM OF NEW ORLEANS21 December 2021 (has links)
Tais experiências permitem a apreciação do saber
[en] This thesis discusses strategies of social and media visibility based on
communication practices launched by young people in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Brazil,
and in New Orleans (LA), United States. In order to do so, we present the reports
of a fieldwork carried out in these cities, supported by the ethnographic method -
participant research and qualitative analysis in a feminist perspective - as well as
the theoretical support based on topics of Communication, Sociology and
Anthropology, mainly. The young people observed in Brazil (2014-2016) are
idealizers, promoters and participants of festivals and battles of passinho, a dance
originated in the years 2000 in the Rio s shantytowns. As a style that congregates
more and more boys and girls, with significant media repercussions, passinho
reveals common aspects of individuals from favelas, everyday situations that pass
through the choice that they make to follow in their lives, conflicts of personal
and family interests and the relationship with the territory that in response to a
stigma of place, it has been re-signified in the pride of the statement I am
favelado. In the singularity of the performative body, passinho places the dancer
in the collective questions that brings him closer to others in similar conditions.
The fieldwork in New Orleans (2015-2016) allowed the observation of youth
activism in spoken word events organized by the New Orleans Youth Open Mic
and in the posts of Blog Noirlinians which explores fashion, culture and territory
in the wake of contemporary social movements, such as Black Lives Matter. Both
mobilize mostly black youth, connected by referential and practices of selfrecognition
as a possible way of producing visibility in a context where the stigma
is in the skin color. The groups observed in Brazil and in the United States have in
common the creativity and the corporal expression as a forum of discussion and
means of representation, besides the use of digital social media and website to
promote their activities, communities and themselves, surpassing, for cultural and
artistic mobilization, the geography of their cities. From the base of youths,
representations and visibility, which supports this analysis, it was verified in the
youth s behaviors and practices the manifestation of individuals who perceive and
assume the social relation as an experience that passes through the path of
sensitivity. Transcending personal interactions, those young people have seeked
out recognition in a context of institutionalized sociocultural valuation patterns
that make some people invisible simply because they do not respond to ideal
models of to be, to have, to belong, to behave like the favelados and black
people participants of this study. In this composition, body and new
technologies appear as strategic elements in the construction and proposition of
(self) representations among the youths observed, so that at least two aspects are evident: 1) The youth body emphasizes as the media itself, a central platform,
exploited as a political territory, constructed poetically and culturally; 2)
Communication practices made possible by new technologies enhance different
experiences of subjectivation. Such experiences allow the appreciation of the
knowledge that comes from sensoriality: the ways young people inhabit different
territories - physical and virtual - and trace their trajectories - often acting
individually, however, shed light on collective competences.

[pt] DOBRA / [en] FOLDALICE CARVALHO CUMPLIDO DE SANTANNA 29 October 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis, which takes shape as daily notes, combines a set of poems and a prose text in which the narrator describes the period of adaptation in a new city. The subject serves as a trigger to reflect on the passage of time, throughout weeks and months, through different prisms. By doing so, these poems and fragments subvert, each in their own way, the conventional chronology of diaries, seeking to supplement and to examine their own status. The title of the thesis refers to the notion of fold formulated by Roland Barthes, which describes the moment in which one becomes aware of being at a crossroads, at a turning point, when their other life – a new life – begins. Also according to Barthes, the new life is only possible if this decision brings along a new practice of writing, folded up as self-criticism.
