Resource Management in Large-scale Systems

Paya, Ashkan 01 January 2015 (has links)
The focus of this thesis is resource management in large-scale systems. Our primary concerns are energy management and practical principles for self-organization and self-management. The main contributions of our work are: 1. Models. We proposed several models for different aspects of resource management, e.g., energy-aware load balancing and application scaling for the cloud ecosystem, hierarchical architecture model for self-organizing and self-manageable systems and a new cloud delivery model based on auction-driven self-organization approach. 2. Algorithms. We also proposed several different algorithms for the models described above. Algorithms such as coalition formation, combinatorial auctions and clustering algorithm for scale-free organizations of scale-free networks. 3. Evaluation. Eventually we conducted different evaluations for the proposed models and algorithms in order to verify them. All the simulations reported in this thesis had been carried out on different instances and services of Amazon Web Services (AWS). All of these modules will be discussed in detail in the following chapters respectively.

Essays in Information Economics

Wangenheim, Jonas von 23 August 2018 (has links)
This dissertation comprises three independent chapters in the field of information economics. The recurrent theme of all three chapters is the ambiguous role of information: While in standard decision theory additional information enables individuals to weakly increase utility through making better choices, I analyze three di erent environments in which more information to consumers may actually be detrimental to consumer utility.

Guerrero Sastre, José 31 March 2011 (has links)

Υπολογιστικά ζητήματα σε στρατηγικά παίγνια και διαδικασίες κοινωνικής επιλογής / Computational aspects in strategic games and social choice procedures

Κυροπούλου, Μαρία 10 June 2014 (has links)
In this dissertation we consider auction markets and examine their properties and how these are affected by the way the participants act. An auction may refer to any mechanism or set of rules governing a resource allocation process. Designing such a mechanism is not an easy task and this is partly due to their vulnerability to strategic manipulation by the participants. Our goal is to examine the theoretical properties of auction mechanisms in order to predict, explain, or even adjust their behavior in practice in terms of some desired features. We focus on sponsored search auctions, which constitute the leading procedure in Internet advertising. We adopt a game-theoretic approach and provide Price of Anarchy bounds in order to measure the efficiency loss due to the strategic behavior of the players. Moreover, we prove revenue guarantees to bound the suboptimality of GSP (generalized second price mechanism) in that respect. Ιn particular, we define variants of the GSP auction mechanism that yield good revenue guarantees. We also consider the problem of designing an optimal auction in the single-item setting. We prove a strong APX-hardness result that applies to the 3-player case. We furthermore give a separation result between the revenue of deterministic and randomized optimal auctions.

Konst i omlopp : mening, medier och marknad i Stockholm under 1700-talets senare hälft / Art in Circulation : Meaning, Media, and Market in Eighteenth-Century Stockholm

Petersson, Sonya January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to explore how art was mediated and given meaning in the environment of an urban media culture in Stockholm during the second part of the 18th century. It comprises studies of how art was distributed on the market, how it was discussed in the press and how it was exhibited in public. It also includes an analytical orientation toward mixing of concepts and values, rather than purifying them into categories such as elite and popular. Art is approached as an open concept of investigation. The thesis presents three studies. The first discusses art as concepts and subject matter in papers, pamphlets and encyclopaedias, with a critical stand against the historiography emphasizing the establishment of the 'fine arts'.  The second situates art in two parallel practises of showing art in public, exhibitions arranged by the Academy of Arts and the Auction Chamber's public sales. The third deals with prints on the market, a medium equally recognized as one of the fine arts and as a visual mass medium. All studies also consider notions of interaction, public, and social class. Two overarching arguments are developed. The first concerns media cultural functions as mechanisms of cultural transgression. This argument points to the mixing of international and local, regarding both themes in the press and prints on the market. It also stresses the mixing of art, commerce, and entertainment, in the dual character of both the academy's exhibitions and the auction's sales. The second argument consists in pointing to alternative cuts, by which I suggest discursive relations between art, luxury, entertainment, and knowledge. These are areas that, since the 18th century, have often been kept apart, but were nonetheless deeply interwoven. One overarchig pattern studied throughout the thesis is the 18th-century linking of the fine arts as well as luxury, entertainment, and knowledge to a perceptually defined subject.

Garcia, Ricard, 1968- 16 April 2009 (has links)
This Doctoral Thesis examines the repercussions of the Great Depression of end of the 19th century on the Catalan rural society from the analysis of the one that can be seen as one of the most characteristic symptoms of any agrarian crisis: the loss of property rights on the land or on other real estate of rural nature as a consequence of claims of debts carried out by individuals or by the State that culminated in public auctions. The work has been divided in two sections. In the first, the dispossession because of administrative executive procedures by unpaid taxes that took place in Catalonia in this period is analysed. In the second, we have studied the judicial activity that finished in public auction of real estate goods and we tried to relate it to the agrarian situation, especially in the wheat and the wine sectors.

Menezes, Ronald do Amaral January 2003 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2009-11-18T19:01:04Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2003 / Auctions are secular institutions used in the commercial relationships among individuaIs and organizations. They provi de greater flexibility to the processes of determination of prices and allocation of goods, increasing the space for negotiations among buyers and sellers. In the Internet, they have been used, in a growing way, in B2B and G2B electronic commerce, mostly through the model of reverse auctions. However, its unidimensional aspect reduces the negotiations to the variable price, producing, many times, bad results. In the Brazilian case, the Federal Government launched Comprasnet, an Internet public emarketplace, through which public organizations acquire goods and services from registered suppliers. Considering alI the available bidding modalities, 'Electronic Pregão' stands out, as an unidimensional reverse auction, based on price, through which suppliers dispute for contracts of the public administration. In the present work, the author proposes a multicriteria decision-making approach, based on Multi-attribute Utility Theory, as an alternative for the adoption of multi-attribute reverse auctions, adding value to Brazilian Public Buying Organizations.
