The Indus civilization puzzles archaeologists in that it shows a seeming uniformity in its material culture during the period from 2600 to 1900 BC and over its huge geographical extent (approximately 1 million square km). In this study two hypotheses are tested: 1) This uniformity in material culture is due to a central political force monitoring craft production; or 2) This uniformity results from an extensive trade and distribution network of craft production. In order to assess these, all available data concerning the craft production of ceramic, lapidary, shell-working and metal artefacts were inventoried and analyzed. A study of craft specialization identified a few wealth items (long carnelian beads, stoneware bangles), which were most probably related to an elite. After reassessing the nature of this elite, a new model of sociopolitical organization for this civilization is proposed.

Predictability of a laboratory analogue for planetary atmospheresYoung, Roland Michael Brendon January 2009 (has links)
The thermally-driven rotating annulus is a laboratory experiment used to study the dynamics of planetary atmospheres under controlled and reproducible conditions. The predictability of this experiment is studied by applying the same principles used to predict the atmosphere. A forecasting system for the annulus is built using the analysis correction method for data assimilation and the breeding method for ensemble generation. The results show that a range of flow regimes with varying complexity can be accurately assimilated, predicted, and studied in this experiment. This framework is also intended to demonstrate a proof-of-concept: that the annulus could be used as a testbed for meteorological techniques under laboratory conditions. First, a regime diagram is created using numerical simulations in order to select points in parameter space to forecast, and a new chaotic flow regime is discovered within it. The two components of the framework are then used as standalone algorithms to measure predictability in the perfect model scenario and to demonstrate data assimilation. With a perfect model, regular flow regimes are found to be predictable until the end of the forecasts, and chaotic regimes are predictable over hundreds of seconds. There is a difference in the way predictability is lost between low-order chaotic regimes and high-order chaos. Analysis correction is shown to be accurate in both regular and chaotic regimes, with residual velocity errors about 3-8 times the observational error. Specific assimilation scenarios studied include information propagation from data-rich to data-poor areas, assimilation of vortex shedding observations, and assimilation over regime and rotation rate transitions. The full framework is used to predict regular and chaotic flow, verifying the forecasts against laboratory data. The steady wave forecasts perform well, and are predictable until the end of the available data. The amplitude and structural vacillation forecasts lose quality and skill by a combination of wave drift and wavenumber transition. Amplitude vacillation is predictable up to several hundred seconds ahead, and structural vacillation is predictable for a few hundred seconds.

A comparative study in the context of the Eastern MediterraneanPaule, Anna 13 May 2013 (has links)
The appearance of jewellery of Near-Eastern origin at Cyprus and Greece is a well-known phenomenon which we meet also from the 12th to the 7th century BC. Well-known examples made from gold and from bronze were found at the Greek continent (Tiryns, Perati) and at the Aegean islands (Crete, Naxos, Kos, Rhodes). The nature of these overseas exchanges, however, can hardly be determined and does not follow any regular system. At the one hand, there are striking parallels between certain Cypriot pieces of jewellery and other specimens found outside of Cyprus. They seem to be the result of direct contacts. The studies of the contexts to which these objects belong allow us to go beyond the mere documentation of jewellery. Following this approach, it is evident that various tombs contained not only pieces of jewellery, but also other foreign objects. This seems to support our hypotheses about on-going overseas contacts. At the other hand, there are a number of items which appear to be local products inspired from Cypriot art. Obviously, they are the result of indirect contacts or of a spreading of ideas.Regarding future studies about Cypriot or Cypriot-inspired objects, the more recent discoveries made in Tiryns are particularly noteworthy. Furthermore, one has to consider that the problems related to the origin of the fibula, which occurs at the end of the Late Bronze Age, have still not been resolved.

"Jeder Engel ist schrecklich. Und dennoch"Gille, Caroline 14 August 2015 (has links)
Angels are defined above all by their indefinability, their mutable essence. The conflict zone between irreconcilable areas makes the existence of angels possible. To fulfill their function – in particular that of medium or messenger – they can fly. Every angel, Rilke wrote, is terrifying. Most terrifying among the angels are, perhaps, those that have fallen. Selected case studies of those form the core of this dissertation. When angels are cast out of heaven, they forfeit their capacity for flight and their privileged position. Left to their own defenses, fallen angels display one of two reaction modes – might or melancholy. Mighty fallen angels are able – or they aim – to maintain their relationship with divine authority, or to redefine it, after the fall. By erecting new realms, more rebellious and sensual, they carry on with temptation. But they are no longer media, because they no longer receive communications. Rather they are the messengers of their own message. Melancholy fallen angels, on the other hand, let their now-useless wings droop. They too existed in a relationship before the fall. When their vis-à-vis disappears, their apparition caves in; their messenger function extinguished, they send and receive nothing or at least nothing new. Yet might and melancholy are not only reaction modes, but also fields of action. The artist, in using the identification figure of the fallen angel both objectively – for his or her artistic creation – and subjectively – for his or her sense of artistic self, reflects both positions. So might and melancholy, rebellion and resignation, creation and collapse mesh. Fallen angels are in fact robbed of their messenger status because, unable to fly, they are no longer a medium. But they do have just one last message – they are themselves the message of the origins of their fall, and that is their goal.

The images of space in the Third Sibylline OracleJacobs, Deborah 25 March 2014 (has links)
Originally, the Sibylline Oracles were a Graeco-Roman literary genre, namely a collection of oracles composed in Greek hexamters which have not come down to us. The Sibylline Books that we have today are of Jewish and Christian origin and stem from a time when the genre was adapted first by Jews and then Christians. The altogether 14 books have developed between 150 BCE and 300 CE and for the longest time were only known through quotations in the church fathers such as Eusebius and Lactantius. According to the majority of scholars, Book III is the oldest of the Sibylline corpus and developed in the 2nd century BCE in Egypt. This thesis reconsiders the established consensus using old and new evidence alike. It focuses on the image of dominion of space in the Third Sibyl. On the one hand, space is looked at as the geographical image of the world as the Sibyl has access to, on the other, space is looked at as the political-theological image of succession of empires that rule the world consecutively until eventually they are superseded by the dominion of God. The dominion of God only play a minor role in Jewish pseudepigraphy. This could be related to the fact that the writings of the Diaspora were not immediately affected by the so-called Antiochene persecution and the Maccabean revolt unlike, for instance, the Book of Daniel. In the writings of the Diaspora the topic only occurs in the Third Sibyl and in the Wisdom of Solomon. It becomes particularly important in the New Testament. With this thesis I hope to provide an important contribution to the genesis of the image of the dominion of God in the New Testament. The eschatological age that the Sibyl prophecies for the establishment of the divine dominion on earth can be described using the term utopia.

La réception du théâtre d’Aristophane dans la littérature grecque de l’époque impériale / The reception of Aristophanes’s theatre work in Greek literature of the Roman periodLebon-Samborski, Émilie 06 December 2019 (has links)
The reception of Aristophanes’s comedy in the Greek literature of the Roman Empire is extensive. Based on the history of transmission of the comedies, which from their creation to the the first two centuries AD were rarely performed on stage but spread and re-interpreted by different means, whether iconographic or textual, this dissertation studies the place and role of this theatre in the cultural landscape of the Roman Empire, specifically in the work of Greek prose writers. The status of this theatre seems at first sight quite problematic: it is rarely mentioned and if mentioned it is spoken of with theoretical disapproval, yet the writers, in various literary genres and forms, fully appropriated it. The rewriting of the comedies is at stake on many levels: on the historic and linguistic levels, in the light of how these texts are anchored in the Attic context and language, and the stock of realia they contain, which contributes to demonstrating the "pepaideumenoi"‘s hellenism in the Empire; on the moral and comic levels, too, as well with satires and parodies; and to a larger extent on the poetic and rhetorical levels, this theatre becomes a conveyor of images and guaranteeing creativity and authority. Two case studies were presented here about emblematic writers of the imperial period, Plutarch of Chaeronea and Lucian of Samosata: they make protean and ambiguous use of the reference to Aristophanes, that this dissertation attempts to clarify.

Predicting Workforce in Healthcare : Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Statistical Methods and Swedish Healthcare Data / Predicering av Arbetskraft inom Sjukvården genom Maskininlärning, Statistiska Metoder och Svenska SjukvårdsstatistikDiskay, Gabriel, Joelsson, Carl January 2023 (has links)
This study examines the use of machine learning models to predict workforce trends in the healthcare sector in Sweden. Using a Linear Regression model, a Gradient Boosting Regressor model, and an Exponential Smoothing model the research aims to grant needed insight for the basis of macroeconomic considerations and to give a deeper understanding of the Beveridge Curve in the healthcare sector’s context. Despite some challenges with data, the goal is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the policy-making around the labor market. The results of this study demonstrates the machine learning potential in the forecasting within an economic context, although inherent limitations and ethical considerations are considered.

The importance of counter-culture in art and lifeOrtlieb, Paulina Elizabeth 03 February 2015 (has links)
Punk rock provided not only a watershed of creativity, innovation and a do-it-yourself spirit to a culture saturated in the mainstream, it physically brought like-minded people together in a community, or rather extended family, which in today’s hyper-d.i.y. culture, is progressively declining. As early as the 1940s, theorists such as Adorno and Horkheimer warned us about alienation in a society increasingly dependent on technology. By looking to punk, and other resilient and robust counter-cultures, perhaps we can find solutions to the pitfalls of the ‘culture industry’ (Adorno, Horkheimer, 1944).
My thesis, consisting of a feature-length documentary film and textual analysis, is a culmination of: ethnographic research into the punk scene in my own community; theoretical research into the sociology, ethnography and subculture theory; and my own subjectivity. My personal findings are presented to offer insight into punk philosophy and to spur discourse, rather than deliver an objective account or didactic reproach. / Graduate

Características do envolvimento do Sistema Nervoso Central na Polirradiculoneuropatia Inflamatória Desmielinizante Crônica: um estudo mediante técnicas quantitativas de Imagem por Ressonância Magnética / Characteristics of involvement of the central nervous system in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy: a quantitative magnetic resonance imaging study.Carmo, Samuel Sullivan 27 June 2014 (has links)
Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a severe disease fundamentally characterized by dysfunction of the Peripheral Nervous System and affects greatly the quality of life of patients. The Central Nervous System (CNS) involvement in CIDP has not been described using recent quantitative neuroimaging techniques. We evaluated 11 patients with CIDP, all treated and without clinical signs of central alterations and 11 controls matched for gender and age group of 19 to 69 years. Magnetic Resonance Imaging were performed on a 3T scanner using different imaging techniques; structural 3D T1-weighted, fluid-attenuated inversion recovery, relaxometry with 5 echoes pulse sequence for T2 maps, magnetization transfer weighted and diffusion tensor imaging. The images were processed on different tools and were obtained results for the studies of diffusivity, volumetry, morphometry, tractometry, brain connectivity, and radiological findings of patients. Different statistical group analyses were performed in the quantitative results: 1) Parametric test for volumetry, tractometry and brain connectivity; 2) Parametric mapping for voxel morphometry; 3) Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) for diffusion coefficients. Changes were detected in all comparisons. In the patients, our main findings are: generalized loss brain volume more pronounced in periventricular regions associated with prominent ventricles, increased simultaneously perpendiculars and parallel diffusivity in the major tracts of the TBSS analyze, white matter density loss in the periventricular area, some bilateral trigeminal thickening, and general reduction of the brain connectivity. The CIDP affects the global brain and represents a demyelination in the CNS.
