The suffocating enjoyment of the Other: An ideology critique of enjoyment in the mediatisation of the climate crisis / Den Andres kvävande njutning: En ideologikritik av njutning i medialiseringen av klimatkrisen

Bintley, Gabriel January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores how the Lacanian concept of ‘the enjoyment of the Other’ (la jouissance de l’Autre) can be applied to break open normative understandings of the political factors shaping the climate crisis deadlock. The principal aim is to investigate how ostensibly disconnected environmental debates may be regarded as linked by an economy of enjoyment, more precisely by the promise of enjoyment by which the subject is libidinally attached to an ideology. Analysis of text proceeds by way of a psychoanalytic critique of ideology on two case studies from UK news media, namely, i) the development of onshore wind turbines and, ii) the appearance of direct-action environmentalist groups, in particular the activities of the group Just Stop Oil. This thesis finds that rhetorical devices across the discourses analysed are sustained by an ideological belief that the subject’s enjoyment has been stolen or ruined by the Other, that is, the external symbolic framework of language, morals and other people that shapes and influences subjectivity. On the one hand it is argued that the mediatisation of the climate crisis in terms of the enjoyment of the Other, that is, the belief that the Other has access to a full enjoyment which the subject is denied, portrays environmental politics as an empty display or ‘spectacle.’ On the other hand, it is suggested that the experience of environmental politics as a spectacle is a symptom of the decline of the state’s symbolic role in late capitalism.

A Global Ethic as a Solution to the Environmental Crisis? : A Review of Hans Küng’s Ethical Framework and Its Relevance to a Contemporary and Global Ethical Challenge.

Normark-Freij, Maja January 2024 (has links)
Hans Küng’s work Weltethos presents a global ethical framework aimed at collectively addressing various global challenges. The purpose of this thesis is to expose and analyze how Küng’s theoretical framework can be applied to contemporary global challenge: the environmental crisis. Through a combination of qualitative analytical methods, the study examines how Küng’s five universal values can contribute to the ethical discussion on solutions to the global environmental problem. Additionally, the advantages and challenges of applying the theory to global environmental issue are evaluated. The results show that Küng’s universal values can help understand and discuss the global environmental ethical challenge, but the theory also requires supplementation with other theoretical perspectives to concretely address different solutions. The conclusion is that a common ethical foundation is important in these matters, but that more concrete proposals and guidelines are needed to achieve sustainable solutions on a global level.

Social work and sustainable development, how? : A qualitative study of social work and sustainable development in two integrating social enterprises

Stenkvist, Elin, Persson, Katja January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine how two integrating social enterprises relate to and combines social, ecological and economic sustainability and how they work with sustainable development in the field of social work. The study has been focusing on three questions: What are the values underpinning “Macken” and “Vägen uts” approach to sustainable development? What motivates these companies to work with ecological sustainability in the creation of new jobs? How do these companies combine social, ecological and economic sustainability? To answer our questions we have been interviewing nine employees through semi-structured interviews combined with observations and this study was analysed through a symbolic perspective. The conclusion of this study showed that these companies worked with specific themes to reach social sustainability. Recurring themes in the study was empowerment, recovery and the employee’s own experience of exclusion. To achieve ecological sustainability the companies worked with recycling furniture and fabric as a way of creating new jobs. They also had ecological cafés and ecological cultivations. Furthermore the economical sustainability was displayed throw the reinvestment of the profit to hire more people to the companies.

Negace umění / Dismissing Art

Davidová, Anna January 2021 (has links)
(EN) Negation, in its many shapes and forms, is an integral part of the history of twentieth-century art. If we look at the world through the dialectical logic of the ever-changing struggle between theses and antitheses, art too comes out as a result of the clash of two inseparable counterparts. Creation is destruction, just like destruction is creation. This diploma thesis tries to explore the broad topic of negation by defining two main interests, which are the topics of destruction and dropping out of the art scene. It sees both cases as a way of revolting against the position of the artist and art in the consumer society of the West. The text handles the phenomenon of destruction in art through multiple examples of artistic movements and the social context after the Second World War and especially during the 1960s, when many artists tried to work with the potential of destruction in art. In the final part devoted to leaving the artistic milieu, the possibility of simultaneously being and not being part of the world of art and the (im)possible future of art in times of climate crisis is explored with the help of the example of Slovak post-practice artist Radim Labuda. Key words: negation in art, destruction art, anti-art, dematerialisation, 20th century art, contemporary art, political art,...

Kurita : CARING FOR SOIL

García Portolés, Andrea January 2023 (has links)
Soil is one of the largest ecosystems being ignored by human activities. Our farming practices and urban constructions have contributed to its degradation, with far-reaching consequences for the water cycle’s equi- librium.Reconnect with nature and learn the methods to assist in its recovery are essential for the survival of all inhabitants on this planet.  My degree project consists of a large research into the water cycle of urban areas, studying the particular case of Stockholm, that leads to the problems of degraded soil. The aim is to understand the relation- ship between water cycle and soil ecosystems and explore potential solutions.  As a result, I have designed KURITA, a learning tool founded upon the ecofeminism values of care, that serves as a learning method for citi- zens to reconnect with soil values and actively participate in its restor- ative process.

[pt] (IN)JUSTIÇA CLIMÁTICA E MULHERES: UM OLHAR INTERSECCIONAL / [en] CLIMATE (IN)JUSTICE AND WOMEN: AN INTERSECTIONAL VIEW

LETICIA MARIA REGO TEIXEIRA LIMA 24 May 2022 (has links)
[en] The Master s Dissertation Climate (In)Justice and Women: An intersectional View aims to identify whether the reasons why women are more vulnerable and suffer more intensely from the impacts of the climate crisis have the influence of gender as another layer of discrimination and marginalization. To this end, the Anthropocene is presented, a new geological epoch in which the human being is compared to a geological force capable of altering the climate and the biosphere, as a background for understanding the climate crisis, in addition to presenting and discussing its history and the characteristics. Then, the new concept of Climate Justice is analyzed, presenting its history and inspiration on the Environmental Justice movements. It presents the conceptualization of Climate Justice and issues related to historical responsibility between countries in the global north and south, in addition to the uneven distribution of climate burdens and bonuses among countries, communities and even people, as is the specific case of women. In the end, the concept of Intersectionality, from North American black feminism, is approached as an analytical tool that allows understanding the specific issues of women in different identity crossings. The climate crisis and the Climate Justice movements are analyzed in order to understand the specific vulnerabilities of the female gender, with an intersectional look, and to investigate the existence of the intersection between gender and climate change from environmental factors such as poverty, food security, education, health etc. It is intended, therefore, to understand the relationship between gender and climate change as another factor of oppression and marginalization of women.

Poisson, Alexandre 08 1900 (has links)
This master thesis offers a defense of the relevance of eco-anarchism. This defense will be done through a critical analysis of the arguments made against eco-anarchism, as well as its two main strands: bioregionalism and social ecology. To carry out this project, it will be necessary to offer a detailed portrait of the theories from which we will analyse the critics. Therefore, the beginning of this thesis will be a presentation of eco-anarchism, bioregionalism and social ecology. Then, it will be necessary to establish a review of the various criticisms that have been made of these theories. Ultimately, this critical analysis will serve as the basis for the presentation of a myriad of recommendations, which will have the objective of remedying the flaws highlighted by certain criticisms. These recommendations will revolve around three main ones: highlight the importance of confederating communities; highlight the importance of building bridges between eco-anarchism and eco-feminism and the ethics of care; abandon the strand of bioregionalism.

Mantinely přijímání darů v českých neziskových organizacích klimatického hnutí / Guidelines for accepting gifts in czech nonprofit organizations of climate movement

Vondrová, Jana January 2022 (has links)
The thesis deals with the boundaries for accepting donations in the Czech non-profit organizations of the climate movement. Czech leaders, unlike the European ones, are rather inattentive to the climate crisis. In recent years this is reflected in immergence of new organizations which creates pressure to address this situation. In order for organizations to advance their agenda, they need a network of donors to support them. The aim of this thesis is to understand what values and practices in these organizations regulate the acceptance of gifts, as well as to understand the motivations of their approach in specific situations.

[en] CLIMATE JUSTICE IN THE COURTS: TERRITORIES AND BRAZILIAN CLIMATE LITIGATION / [pt] JUSTIÇA CLIMÁTICA NOS TRIBUNAIS: TERRITÓRIOS E LITIGÂNCIA CLIMÁTICA BRASILEIRA

JULIANA CHERMONT PESSOA LOPES 06 October 2023 (has links)
[en] The Master s Dissertation Climate Justice in the courts: territories and Brazilian climate litigation aims to analyze climate litigation actions in Brazil that address the theme of Climate Justice. The objective is to identify how certain social segments, specifically indigenous peoples and quilombolas, have adopted the climate agenda and taken their demands to the courts. From this perspective, the dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents territorial conflicts in Brazil and their connection with the environmental issue. The Brazilian agrarian history is briefly presented, and how socio-territorial conflicts evolved into enshrined rights in the Federal Constitution, notably socio-environmental rights. In addition, the environmentalization of social struggles movement is presented to contextualize the struggles for Environmental Justice in Brazil and their relationship with territorial struggles. Finally, the movement for Climate Justice is presented and contextualized. It is argued that to effectively address climate change, it is necessary to consider the specificities of the territories in question. Moreover, climate litigation in Brazil is presented, based on the analysis of cases organized in the The Brazilian Climate Litigation Platform and classified according to the Environmental/Climate Justice approach. Finally, the cases analyzed were selected by the active participation of indigenous people or quilombolas.
