The Tupi confession: the issue of Jesuit-Tupi confessionals in the 16th-18th centuries in the Grão-Pará and Maranhãos and Brazils missions

Jaqueline Ferreira da Mota 10 March 2017 (has links)
This doctoral dissertationpresents acomparative study of five Tupi confessionals establishedin missionary regions of the Grão-Pará and Maranhão and Brazilprovincesbetween the 16thand 18thcenturies. The overall objective of the study is to present the intended Catholic confession models in each of the centuriesreferred to, considering the places of origin of penitent Indians and the religious institution to which theconfessorsbelonged, the different models available to apply the Sacramentof Penance(sometimes printed, sometimes manuscripts),and the contexts in which theJesuit missionswere developed. We assume that the Jesuits, despite havinga universal purpose of evangelization, had to adapt to the different realities presented by their indigenous interlocutors, conditioned by the different cultural spaces (physical and temporal) where the missioning had arisen. Besides the linguistic analysis (terminology and translation) conducted within a historical perspective andits anthropological repercussions, another methodologyusedfor guidance and support isthe one drafted by the Italian School of History of Religions.

Everything is different here : A gualitative study about women from Kosovo and their experiences of integration on the Swedish labor market in relation to a patriarchal family structure

Pavlovic, Snezana January 2017 (has links)
Following questions drive this study forward. How do immigrant women experience the Swedish society’s demands for self-sufficiency in relation to their requirements regarding the family's expectations of themselves? How do they balance the society’s expectations of self-sufficiency in relation to their family’s expectations on themselves within the family? The Swedish labor market can be hard to be integrated in for anyone, not at least for immigrants who do not master the language. In addition, it is even harder for a woman who lives in a patriarchal family structure to establish herself on the labor market, because such structures are based on the man ruling the family and that the men therefore have higher rank than the women. This means that the women always have to ask for their husbands’ permission before they do anything, no matter what it is. In such a structure only one supply for the family and the man works while the woman stays at home and takes care of the children and the household. Therefore, in a new society where both men and women supply for the family, it makes a large change when the woman suddenly is given the opportunity to work. This study presents, through qualitative interviews, how seven women fled to Sweden from Kosovo in the 90s and their experiences of opportunities for integration in the Swedish labor market in relation to their family tradition. The result shows that the immigrated women want to work but that they meet obstacles in terms of family traditions and their experiences of the expectations from the surroundings. The women feel that they are well received by the authorities, but they experience that they do not get the help that they truly need, considering their family traditions. This, in turn, makes it harder for them to balance society’s expectations concerning their own provision in relation to the family’s expectations on themselves.

Steenbok, Arthur-Ashe 25 May 2006 (has links)
The Coloured community of Southern Africa, just like other ethnic groups, has been shaped by many factors (politics, economy, secularization, etc.). This ‘otherness’ also caused God to be regarded in a unique way – his role in this world, his involvement in this community and, finally, what his church should look like and how it should function. The crux of this mini dissertation is to look specifically at this unique image of God. I humbly apologize for my use of classification and I do not want to revert to the former dispensation, but it is of the utmost importance for matters such as church union that colour and opinions be discussed. The story of the Uniting Reformed Church of Southern Africa between 1976 and 2005 has been followed in greater detail both with a church historical and autobiographical approach. Some perspectives on the future of this church are provided. / Dissertation (MDiv (Church History))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Church History and Church Policy / unrestricted

Nové tváře / New Faces

Pokorná, Barbora Unknown Date (has links)
The project New Faces is a series of portraits dealing with the theme of identity and its loss, human individuality and the phenomenon of ideal of beauty. Each of paintings depict different views on the same face, base on personal confessions of portrayed and his friends. Thus we can observe confrontation of the "subjective" and the "objective", where this supposed "objectivity" acquire the relative value in the context of other pictures. The project points to the problem of self-perception and it explores how human perception distorts the reality, especially if more factors (than just a visual image of reality) affects the person.

The Belhar Confession and liturgy : a hymnological study

Mofokeng, Mokete January 2017 (has links)
Much study regarding the Belhar Confession has been conducted already such as: The Belhar Confession in its historical context Plaatjies-van Huffel (2014), Chronicle of Conference Barman/ Belhar Consultation 18 and 19 October 2004 Hansen (2005), A gift from heaven-the receptions in the Belhar Confession in the period 1982-2000 and its ecumenical significance today Naudè (2003) and On violence, the Belhar Confession and human dignity Koopman (2008) to mention but a few. From preliminary observations and some initial research, it seems that there is still a need to do an indepth study on the liturgical function of the Belhar Confession in Music. The working hypothesis of this study is if the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa URCSA uses Belhar more in the liturgy, especially in singing it will have an impact on the congregations and members. In other words the working hypothesis is that there is a link between liturgy, here specifically hymn singing, and the formation of worshippers. If URCSA is expecting others to adopt this confession it is its responsibility to embrace it during worship in church and to the rest of the society outside church vicinities. The literature survey that will be carried out later in this study confirms this state of affairs and that there is thus indeed a huge research gap in this regard. The researcher did a literature study, conducted semi-structured group interviews, as well as the some empirical research in order to explore the basic research question. / Dissertation (MA Theol)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Practical Theology / MA Theol / Unrestricted

Palm, Anna January 2022 (has links)
The development over the past 150 years from confessional to confession-free schools has resulted in large changes concerning the role of religion in Swedish schools. Most religious elements in schools are forbidden today, but current curriculum decree that hymns still should be part of the central content of the subject of music. The singing of hymns springs from a strong tradition within the Swedish school system and is still considered by many to be necessary content. The purpose of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how music teachers handle confessional material in their teaching, and how they reason about confession-free education. The study is built upon previous research about religion didactics, freedom of religion, and the importance of cultural rites. The study consists of qualitative interviews with four active music teachers in Sweden. The hermeneutic analysis of the research material shows that the interpretations of the concept confession-free are varied, and that teachers feel an insecurity about how to ensure a confession-free education with religious material, even if several intuitive solutions to the dilemma were shown. The discussion lifts whether the concept confession-free ensures the religious freedom of the pupils, and some practical suggestions for music education.

Renesanční malované epitafy v Čechách (1560-1610) / Renaissance Painted Epitaphs in Bohemia (1560-1610)

Zborníková, Tereza January 2013 (has links)
This masters degree work named Painted renaissance epitaphs in Bohemia (1560- 1620) elaborates and develops the preceding bachelors work. The opening chapters present reflections and view of the perception of the death in Bohemia before the battle of Bílá hora. Yet these general aspects are focusing on the person or persons directly connected with the named painted epitaphs. Attention is paid for instance to the czech example of the Ars Moriendi, the Book about death, written by Mikuláš Krupěhorský for Petr Kokořovec from Kokořov. In the chapter dedicated to the testaments, the work handles the original last wills of Jarosav Smiřický from Smiřice and Václav Hlava from Kyršfeld, whose epitaphs form part of the catalogue. The painted renaissance epitaphs are firstly generally characterized with use of the presentation of the early works of this kind (epitaphs of the Master I.W. and the wall painting in the convent of the Fourteen Holy Helpers), then the attention is paid to the questionable issues related to the confessional (non)distinctiveness of the painted renaissance epitaphs. The question of definition and specifics of the catholic and non-catholic epitaph monuments is being solved here on the base of the rightful characteristics. Main chapter which crowns the work is formed by the catalogue of...

Ermont, Nathalie 09 1900 (has links)
This Master’s thesis explores the modalities of a narrative structure declined in several singular points of view, which multiplies the variations on the theme of betrayal, when it is felt, for a human being, on the affective level. It also explores the question of transmission in a relationship where an adult allows a child to develop his own personality. In the creative part of my thesis, the « novel » entitled Promesses et trahisons recounts the relation between a music master and his young pupil. The reader discovers the successes and the setbacks in this exclusive relationship through three different points of view. After the confession of the student, who remembers as an adult his past history, we have access to the diary of the master presented as an archival document. Another point of view completes the story in the form of a letter, signed by a third party, before an epilogue, which will shed a final light on the plot. The book that inspired the essay section of my thesis is entitled Les Portes du sang. In it, the author, Michel Del Castillo, explores a mother-son relationship (adult and child) through several testimonials, which in turn a narrator tries to contrast and corroborate in order to reveal the elusive personality of the character responsible for her son’s feeling of betrayal. In both cases, one finds a quest for identity whose mystery persists beyond the text.

The Effects of Suggestibility, Compliance, and Situational Stress on Miranda Abilities, Waiver Decisions, and False Confessions

Otal, Tanveer K. 08 1900 (has links)
Miranda abilities, individual characteristics, and contextual factors are critical elements to evaluate in determining the validity of Miranda rights waivers and confessions. Research indicates that many individuals waive their Miranda rights without adequate comprehension or reasoning. In addition, personality characteristics of suggestibility and compliance are key factors influencing waiver decisions. Furthermore, scholars found that situational anxiety likewise impairs Miranda abilities and waiver decisions. Previous research has investigated the effects of Miranda abilities, individual characteristics, and contextual factors on Miranda waivers and confessions by utilizing confession paradigms. A methodological limitation of these paradigms is the lack of volition and autonomy in committing the accused acts of wrongdoings. The current study of undergraduate students advances previous research through examining the detrimental impact of false accusations of wrongdoings committed independently and intentionally using a novel paradigm. This thesis sought to further the understanding of the effects of Miranda abilities (i.e., comprehension and reasoning), personality characteristics (i.e., suggestibility and compliance), and situational factors (i.e., false accusation) in relation to Miranda waivers and confession decisions. The final sample included 87 undergraduate students, of whom approximately 97% waived their rights and 40% falsely confessed to the wrongdoing. The results indicate that Miranda reasoning, suggestibility, and compliance significantly predict the likelihood of false confession. These findings can be used to inform policy changes as well as the evaluations of the validity of Miranda waivers and confessions.
