The arguments developed by Italian physicist these works, consolidating the Copernican theory and revolutionize the way we study nature. For centuries, the Western conception of the universe was supported by the assumptions of cosmology of Aristotle. Aristotelian cosmology had as fundamental points the idea of the incorruptibility of the heavens, the earth and the immobility of a hierarchy of elements. For the peripatetic, the cosmos was finite and heterogeneous, and was divided into two distinct regions: the sublunary (terrestrial) and above the Moon (heavenly). The telescopic observations made by Galileo in 1609, showing craters and mountains on the moon and Jupiter's satellites, were in evidence against the heaven-earth dichotomy proposed by Aristotle. For it revealed "imperfections" in the heavenly bodies, and showed that not all the stars had their revolutions as the center of the Earth, the idea of asking the same centrality in the cosmos. Moreover, the break with Aristotelian cosmology destabilizing the very physics of Aristotle, whose explanation of the movements of bodies depended on the cosmological structure, since there were three types of moves, straight toward the center, straight away from the center and circular around the center, which required a motionless earth occupying the center of the cosmos. The idea of centrality and immobility of the Earth is therefore fundamental point of Aristotelian physics and cosmology. Most of the work of Galileo Galilei seems to think about a central objective: the defense of the Copernican theory. Since his public adhesion to the Copernicanism in 1610, in Sidereus Nuncius, until Dialogue published in 1632, the Pisan Phisycist sought to break with the assumptions of the Aristotle s natural philosophy which supported the geocentric conception. As a result, it is in First Day of Dialogue that, certainly, we could find a more systematic and focused effort against the Aristotelic conception of world and its main characteristic: the dissociation of the cosmos into two distinct regions, the celestial and sublunary. / Nesta dissertação, temos como objetivo realizar um estudo e reconstrução das críticas que Galileu empreende à física e à cosmologia de Aristóteles, tendo como âncora as obras Sidereus Nuncius e Primeira Jornada do Diálogo sobre os dois máximos sistemas do mundo. Os argumentos desenvolvidos pelo físico pisano nestas obras, consolidam a teoria copernicana e revolucionam a maneira de se estudar a natureza. Durante séculos, a concepção ocidental de universo esteve apoiada nos pressupostos da cosmologia de Aristóteles. A cosmologia aristotélica tinha como pontos fundamentais a ideia de incorruptibilidade do céu, de imobilidade da Terra e de uma hierarquia dos elementos. Para o peripatético, o cosmos era finito e heterogêneo, e se encontrava dividido em duas regiões distintas: a sublunar (terrestre) e a supralunar (celeste). As observações telescópicas realizadas por Galileu em 1609, ao mostrar crateras e montanhas na Lua, e satélites em Júpiter, constituíram-se em evidências contrárias à dicotomia céu-Terra proposta por Aristóteles. Pois revelavam imperfeições nos corpos celestes, e mostravam que nem todos os astros tinham como centro de suas revoluções a Terra, questionando a ideia de centralidade da mesma no cosmos. Além disso, a ruptura com a cosmologia aristotélica desestabilizava a própria física de Aristóteles, cuja explicação dos movimentos dos corpos dependia da estrutura cosmológica, uma vez que existiam três tipos de movimentos: retilíneo em direção ao centro, retilíneo se afastando do centro e circular em torno do centro, o que requeria uma Terra imóvel ocupando o centro do cosmos. A ideia de centralidade e imobilidade da Terra é, portanto, ponto fundamental da física e da cosmologia aristotélicas. Grande parte da obra de Galileu parece girar em torno de um objetivo central: a defesa da teoria copernicana. Desde a sua adesão pública ao copernicanismo em 1610, no Sidereus Nuncius, até o Diálogo publicado em 1632, o físico pisano buscou romper com os pressupostos da filosofia natural de Aristóteles que sustentavam a concepção geocêntrica. Com efeito, é na Primeira Jornada do Diálogo que poderemos encontrar um esforço mais sistemático e concentrado contra a concepção aristotélica de mundo e sua principal característica: a dualidade do cosmos.

Signal processing with optical delay line filters for high bit rate transmission systems

In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist das globale Kommunikationssystem in einem immer größerem Maße ein integraler Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens geworden. Optische Kommunikationssysteme sind die technologische Basis für diese Entwicklung. Nur Fasern können die riesige benötigte Bandbreite bereitstellen. Während für die ersten optischen Übertragungssysteme die Faser als "flacher" Kanal betrachtet werden konnte, machen Wellenlängenmultiplex und steigende Übertragungsraten die Einbeziehung von immer mehr physikalischen Effekten notwendig. Bei einer Erhöhung der Kanaldatenrate auf 40 Gbit/s und mehr ist die statische Kompensation von chromatischer Dispersion nicht mehr ausreichend. Die intrinsische Toleranz der Modulationsformate gegenüber Dispersion nimmt quadratisch mit der Symbolrate ab. Daher können beispielsweise durch Umwelteinflüsse hervorgerufene Dispersionsschwankungen die Dispersionstoleranz der Modulationsformate überschreiten. Dies macht eine adaptive Dispersionskompensation notwendig, was gleichzeitig auch Dispersionsmonitoring erfordert, um den adaptiven Kompensator steuern zu können. Vorhandene Links können mit Restdispersionskompensatoren ausgestattet werden, um sie für Hochgeschwindigkeitsübertragungen zu ertüchtigen. Optische Kompensationstechniken sind unabhängig von der Kanaldatenrate. Daher wird eine Erhöhung der Datenrate problemlos unterstützt. Optische Kompensatoren können WDM-fähig gebaut werden, um mehrere Kanäle auf einmal zu entzerren. Optical communication systems are the technological basis for this development. Only fibers can provide the huge bandwidth that is required. Where the fiber could be regarded as a flat channel for the first optical transmission systems wavelength multiplexing and increasing line rates made it necessary to take more and more physical effects into account. When the line rates are increased to 40 Gbit/s and higher static chromatic dispersion compensation is not enough. The modulation format's intrinsic tolerance for dispersion decreases quadratically with the symbol rate. Thus, environmentally induced chromatic dispersion fluctuations may exceed the dispersion tolerance of the modulation formats. This makes an adaptive dispersion compensation necessary implying also the need for a monitoring scheme to steer the adaptive compensator. Legacy links that are CD-compensated by DCFs can be upgraded with residual dispersion compensators to make them ready for high speed transmission. Optical compensation is independent from the line rate. Hence, increasing the data rates is inherently supported. Optical compensators can be built WDM ready compensating multiple channels at once. The book deals with optical delay line filters as one class of optical compensators. The filter synthesis of such delay line filters is addressed. The connection between optical filters and digital FIR filters with complex coefficients that are used in conjunction with coherent detection could be shown. Iterative and analytical methods that produce the coefficients for dispersion (and also dispersion slope) compensating filters are researched. As important as the compensation of dispersion is the estimation of the dispersion of a signal. Using delay line filters, the vestigial sidebands of a signal can be used to measure the dispersion. Alternatively, nonlinear detection can be used to estimate the pulse broadening which is caused mainly by dispersion. With dispersion compensation and dispersion monitoring, dispersion compensators can be adapted to the signal's impairment. Special properties of the filter in conjunction with an analytical description can be used to provide a fast and reliable control algorithm for setting the filter to a given dispersion and centering it on a signal. Finally, prototypes of such fiber optic chromatic dispersion and dispersion slope compensation filters were manufactured and characterized. The device and system characterization of the prototypes is presented and discussed.

The Emotional Economy of Sex, Fear & Violence / On Politics & Emotion in Occidental Media Discourses

Die hier vorgelegte kumulative Dissertation befasst sich mit der Frage des emotionalen Sprachgebrauchs als Teil der öffentlichen politischen Kommunikation in abendländischen Demokratien. Durch die Anwendung etablierter Erkenntnisse und Ansätze aus den Bereichen der affektiven Neurowissenschaften und der Neurolinguistik zu emotionalem Sprachgebrauch, wird versucht neue Perspektiven und Analysetechniken für die Sozial- und Politikwissenschaften herauszuarbeiten, die sich mit der rhetorischen Gestaltung und Funktion öffentlicher politischer Kommunikation befassen. Im Rahmen dieser Bemühungen habe ich einen sequenziellen Mixed-Methods-Ansatz entwickelt, eine neopragmatische Diskursanalyse (NPDA), die auf der bestehenden Methodologie der Pragmatischen Soziologie der Kritik (PSC) basiert. Diese Methode ermöglicht es, die Argumentationsstrategien und -muster von Akteuren abzuleiten und ihre Verwendung von hochgradig erregender emotionaler Sprache (via HAEWWörterbuch) nachzuzeichnen. In zwei separaten Fallstudien habe ich diesen neu entwickelten Ansatz angewendet, um (1) die US-Präsidentschaftswahlkämpfe 2016 von Trump und Clinton zu analysieren sowie (2) öffentliche Reden britischer Parteiführer:innen der Conservative und der Labour Party von 1900 bis 2019. Ich habe festgestellt, dass emotionale Sprache in der gesamten untersuchten (politischen) Kommunikation vorkommt und dass sie hauptsächlich eine Highlighter-Funktion in den Argumentationen der Akteure einnimmt. Politische Kommunikation, als eine spezifische Ausformung menschlicher Kommunikation, scheint immer ‚emotional‘ zu sein. / This cumulative dissertation addresses the issues of emotive language use as part of public political communication in occidental democracies. By applying established findings and approaches from the fields of affective neuroscience and neurolinguistics on emotive language use, the here presented dissertation intends to offer new perspectives and analytical techniques for the social and political sciences, concerned with understanding the rhetorical design and function of public political communication. As part of these efforts, I developed a sequential mixed methods approach, a neopragmatist discourse analysis (NPDA), which is based on the existing methodology associated with the Pragmatic Sociology of Critique (PSC). This method allows for the deduction of actors’ argumentative strategies and patterns and to detect their use of highly arousing emotive language (via HAEW dictionary). In two separate case studies I applied this newly developed approach, analysing (1) the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaigns of Trump and Clinton as well as (2) public speeches of British party leaders from the Conservative and Labour Party from 1900 – 2019. I found that emotive language appeared throughout all analysed (political) communication and that it mainly served a highlighting function within actors’ argumentations. Political communication, as a specific form of human communication, seems to always be ‘emotional’.

Layer 2 Path Selection Protocol for Wireless Mesh Networks with Smart Antennas

In this thesis the possibilities of smart antenna systems in wireless mesh networks are examined. With respect to the individual smart antenna tradeoffs, a routing protocol (Modified HWMP, MHWMP) for IEEE 802.11s mesh networks is presented, that exploits the full range of benefits provided by smart antennas: MHWMP actively switches between the PHY-layer transmission/reception modes (multiplexing, beamforming and diversity) according to the wireless channel conditions. Spatial multiplexing and beamforming are used for unicast data transmissions, while antenna diversity is employed for efficient broadcasts. To adapt to the directional channel environment and to take full benefit of the PHY capabilities, a respective MAC scheme is employed. The presented protocol is tested in extensive simulation and the results are examined.

Esta dissertação busca uma aproximação entre fotografia e literatura à luz do processo mnemônico que se forma por meio desse tipo de imagem. Assim, o objetivo principal consiste em analisar e mostrar como a fotografia atua e de que maneira contribui para que alguém (re)construa seu passado relacionando-o à memória. Para isso, parte-se da análise das obras literárias Escenas de cine mudo do autor espanhol Julio Llamazares e Retrato en sepia da escritora chilena Isabel Allende, que nos servem como ponto de partida para a discussão analítica, destacando-se a importância da fotografia para a literatura. Dessa maneira, faz-se necessário um estudo cuidadoso dos elementos que compõem cada uma das referidas obras, com a finalidade de perceber e compreender as relações que se estabelecem para a formação da memória, já que em Escenas de cine mudo e Retrato en sepia, o modo de (re)construção do passado através de fotografia é diferente. O termo “memória” está associado a diversos conceitos, de acordo com a área em que é aplicado. Levando em conta essa ideia, a proposta é partir dos conceitos de “memória” estabelecidos por Aristóteles, Platão e Ricoeur, aplicando-os às obras literárias mencionadas. / Esta disertación busca un acercamiento entre fotografía y literatura a la luz del proceso mnemónico que se forma por medio de ese tipo de imagen. Así, el objetivo principal consiste en investigar y mostrar cómo la fotografía actúa en la literatura y de qué manera contribuye para que uno (re)construya su pasado relacionándolo a la memoria. Conclui que a oposição contraditória como exclusiva e exaustiva é uma tese logicamente anterior à caracterização da proposição como bivalente ou determinadamente verdadeira ou falsa. / This dissertation investigates the interpretation of Thomas Aquinas to the problem of future contingents, concerning the chapter 9 of Aristotle's De Interpretatione. The main goal is to explain what is the function of the term "determinate" on Aquinas's interpretation. For that reason, the dissertation intends to reconstruct Aristotle's notion of proposition as an enunciating activity, as well as to investigate the Book Gamma of Metaphysics, which defends the principles of non-contradiction and excluded middle. During that reasoning, it turns the attention to the fact that, from the proposition's point of view, the syntactic formulations of the metaphysical principles are prior to the semantic ones. Thereby, it claims to identify a distinction between the sense conditions of a proposition and the attribution of a truth value and, as a result of that distinction, it proposes a reading of Aquinas's solution to the abovementioned problem. It concludes that the contradictory opposition as excluding and exhausting is a thesis logically prior to the characterization of a proposition as bivalent or determinately true or false.

A presente dissertação investiga a interpretação de Tomás de Aquino ao problema dos futuros contingentes, relativo ao capítulo 9 do tratado De Interpretatione, de Aristóteles. O objetivo central é explicar qual a função do termo "determinate" na interpretação de Tomás.
