Stoppa matcherna!

Lind, Rasmus January 2021 (has links)
This essay sheds light on the protest events in connection with the Davis-Cup matches in Båstad in 1968 and 1975. They are relatively close in time, touch on the same sports competition, similar issues, engage largely the same group of protesters and were the subject of enormous media interest. When looking at the events in Båstad in a retrospective light, the event in 1968 is reflected much more strongly than the event in 1975, in this essay this imbalance will be examined in more detail. The main purpose of the essay is to, based on articles in Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter, comparatively investigate how these newspapers may have shaped the historical image of the events in connection with the Davis Cup matches in Båstad in 1968 and 1975. The theoretical framework is based on framing theory, which shows how media's representations of reality affect people's perceptions, how media, in some ways but not others, reproduces and disseminates different power centers’. The choice of the theoretical framework rests on the thesis that the newspapers' depiction of the events created a historical picture of them. The newspapers visualize the reality according to preferences that they find to be rewarding now. The essay's methodological starting point is both quantitative and qualitative as it consists of a conventional content analysis on the one hand and is inspired by a quantitative four-step model that is connected to the framing theory on the other. The results show that the framings of the newspapers can be linked to the different course of events of the protests, as well as the modernization of social institutions, in particular sports. In 1968, the white sport was still white, but the events in Båstad nullified the possibility of seriously claiming that sports and politics did not influence each other. The similar framings of the newspapers in 1975 also show how far the abolition of authority had come. Sport was opened to the world and to politics, modernized and democratized and is today more democratically governed than before.

Attenuation of Acid Mine Drainage Enhanced by Organic Carbon and Limestone Addition: A Process Characterization

Gillmor, Anna M 01 January 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Surface and groundwaters in contact with mining-exposed pyritic materials have the capacity to generate acid mine drainage (AMD), an acidic, sulfate-rich, metals-laden effluent. The Davis Mine located in northwestern Massachusetts offers a model site to study the processes of natural attenuation of acid mine drainage. These include physico-chemical processes such as dilution and sorption, geochemical processes such as aluminosilicate weathering and biological processes such as transformation and cycling of sulfate, iron and acidity by bacterial metabolism. A focus of recent research undertaken at the site has been characterizing the presence and activity of these bacteria with an aim to stimulate their capacity to attenuate the severity of acidic conditions. To further this investigation, a pilot-scale treatment system was installed, composed of a modified permeable reactive barrier containing organic carbon and limestone. Down-gradient groundwater was sampled over a sixteen-month period for concentrations of dissolved metals, major cations and sulfate, along with pH and redox measurements. The results showed a decrease in dissolved metals, a possible increase in calcium and decrease in sulfate, and measurable increase in pH and corresponding decrease in oxidation-reduction potential. Major decreases in dissolved iron and aluminum were observed, a change which is not entirely consistent with metals removal by combination with biogenic sulfide alone. The additional influence of hydrolysis was proposed and the anticipated action of this alternate process found to bear resemblance to the observed changes. Groundwater composition from the experimental period was compared to previous measurements and significant changes described in pH, iron, aluminum, copper and zinc and to a lesser extent in calcium and sulfate. Comparisons were also made with concurrent surface water compositions and findings of analogous studies. Conclusions that can be drawn include: the pH and redox environment into which a treatment system is placed can greatly influence the reactions which take place, side-reactions which occur in reducing and alkalinity-generating amendments may also have an attenuating effect, and variable processes influence groundwater composition in these biogeochemically complex environments.

Transkription till improvisation : En studie i utvecklande av improvisationsteknik / Transcription to Improvisation – A Study in Development of Improvisational Techniques

Isaksson, William January 2022 (has links)

Mendes, Luciana Corts 27 November 2014 (has links)
Analyses the objectives and proposals of information organisation developed by the Bibliographic Movement, and indicates its influence in Information Science. This exploratory research, accomplished through bibliographic survey, literature review, and analysis, investigates in the context of modernity the ideas of Bibliographic Movement exponents Paul Otlet, Wilhelm Ostwald, H. G. Wells, John Cotton Dana, and Watson Davis. The Bibliographic Movement was characterized by its plurality, and aimed to respond to modernity\'s effects in the information world. The movement attributed to information the potentiality of individual transformation. Therefore, it changed the focus of information services from preservation to access, and pursued the organisation of collections according to its contents. The development of technology made the Bibliographic Movement exponents emphasise the application of new technologies to the process of information dissemination in order to facilitate and accelerate it. Information Science inherited its social role partially from the Bibliographic Movement, and aims at organising information so that it can be accessed. Information Science also shares with the movement the perspective of employing high technology to disseminate information. The Zeitgeist that gave rise to the Bibliographic Movement led to a common set of ideas and allowed the elaboration of similar proposals for the organisation of information. However, it is not discarded the probability of mutual influence between the individuals analysed. Despite its historical specificity the Bibliographic Movement shares with Information Science modern ideas and its relation to culture. It is concluded that the current information culture and the information culture of the Bibliographic Movement have differences, notwithstanding, they are entwined cultures and many of their problems are similar and need similar solutions

[en] BLACKENING FEMINISM OR FEMINIZING RACE: THE LIBERTARIAN NARRATIVES OF ANGELA DAVIS AND LÉLIA GONZALEZ / [pt] ENEGRECENDO O FEMINISMO OU FEMINIZANDO A RAÇA: NARRATIVAS DE LIBERTAÇÃO EM ANGELA DAVIS E LÉLIA GONZALEZ

RAQUEL DE ANDRADE BARRETO 04 October 2005 (has links)
[en] My goal with this thesis to present and compare the trajectories and thoughts of Angela Yvonne Davis (Alabama/USA, 1944) and Lélia Almeida Gonzalez (Minas Gerais/Brasil, 1935 - Rio de Janeiro/Brasil, 1994) - both women intellectuals and activists of the Black movements in the US and Brazil. Angela became internationally known in the 1960s as a Black struggle symbol in the US. The impact of her figure still lingers on in the memory of those who lived in those years. Lélia was an important activist in the Brazilian Black movement of the late 1970s, when she intensively took part in the political struggle for the return of democracy in Brazil. My discussion of the authors´ main works emphasizes the theoretical essays they developed on the social insertion of black women in their countries. It specially highlights the debate forwarded on black women experiences under slavery. Throughout the thesis I call attention for the contribution of their conceptual legacy for contemporary studies on racial relations.

Att lyssna till meningen i mellanrummet : En läsning av Jean-Luc Nancys Listening ur Jacques Derridas différance i klangen av musikens blå toner / Listening to the meaning in the space between : A reading of Jean-Luc Nancy’s Listening through Jacques Derridas différance in the sonority of the blue notes

Ulriksson, Tanja January 2020 (has links)
This essay attempts to listen to meaning in the borderland, and asks in between which faculties and senses, through which we see and/or listen to the world, do we seek sense? My writing is located on this border, or more precisely on the erased border that I call an interspace or an interval, the place where we look for sense in the relation between language, philosophy, politics, and music. I have done this through the reading of three contemporary philosophers: Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy, and Angela Davis. Derrida and Nancy have provided me with a theoretical and philosophical background for my approach to Davis’s philosophic and political claims. My analysis sets out from Derrida’s différance and what it reveals in the sign system of language. This is continued through a discussion of Nancy’s question: Is philosophy capable of listening, in all senses of the word? Is the philosopher not someone who always hears? In my reading, this connection is established through the blue notes. Davis, finally, provides me with a support for my claim that we, in the political significance of blues, in the traces of meaning that it contains, might be able to listen to Derrida’s différance. Keywords: Listening, meaning, différance, blues, sonority, blue notes, in between, border, subject, Jacques Derrida, Angela Y Davis, Jean-Luc Nancy.

Unconquerable Defiance: Richmond Newspapers and Confederate Defeat, 1864-1865

Berler, Anne K. 01 January 2007 (has links)
This thesis describes and analyses how the Richmond press operated as a propaganda machine during the final year of the Civil War. It argues that the newspapers of the Confederate capital regularly exploited the propaganda value of the news they reported, employing methods including distortion of facts and libelous personal attacks. They displayed a seemingly total disregard for veracity in their zeal to convince their readership that the cause was not lost, and created a false picture of the real situation to a population which was war-weary and desperate for reassurance that victory was still possible. Defeats were minimized and even the tiniest victory in the most insignificant skirmish was magnified. When the Northern army began its strategy of hard war, the Richmond press seized on that to help create a demonized portrait of the Yankee and the North.
