Therapeutic and support services provision for children with dual intellectual disability and emotional and/or behavioural difficulties in Christchurch, New Zealand

Dent, Katie Annemieke January 2008 (has links)
Therapeutic and support services provision for children with dual intellectual disability and emotional and/or behavioural difficulties was evaluated in the present study. The participants were parents of children with dual disabilities, aged between 5 and 12 and attending mainstream schools in Christchurch, New Zealand, and managers of service providers for the target group. Parents and service managers partook in semi-structured interviews designed to obtain information about patterns of service provision. The results of the present study indicate that parents and managers had similar perceptions of the extent to which services in Christchurch currently met the needs of the target children and families. Additionally, the study functioned as a pilot of the design and methods for a potential future project; therefore parent participants also completed two checklists estimating their child’s adaptive functioning and the type and severity of their emotional and/or behavioural difficulties.

Factors predictive of emotional and behavioural difficulties in children with refractory focal epilepsy

Sarri, Margarita January 2014 (has links)
Focal epilepsy in childhood is associated with increased risk for developing behavioral, emotional, cognitive and social–adaptive impairments. The present thesis focused on mental health difficulties in paediatric refractory focal epilepsy. It undertook a detailed evaluation of the predictive power of several demographic (gender, age at assessment), clinical (age at onset and duration of epilepsy, seizure frequency), localization (lobe and lateralization of pathology) and cognitive variables (performance in intellectual, memory and academic attainment measures) for mood, conduct, inattention/hyperactivity and peer relationship difficulties, as assessed by parental report. Data from a population of 282 children and adolescents, previously collected for clinical purposes, were examined, using a series of univariate and multivariate analyses. Mental health difficulties were found to be highly prevalent, with peer relationships the most frequently reported area of difficulty, followed by inattention/hyperactivity and emotional difficulties. Different patterns of associations between the variables examined here and individual emotional/behavioural difficulties were revealed, partially confirming and extending previous findings in the literature. Longer duration of epilepsy was found to increase the risk for developing emotional difficulties; male gender and earlier age at onset the risk for conduct difficulties; male gender, earlier age at onset, longer duration and frontal lobe localization the risk for attention/hyperactivity difficulties; and finally longer duration, higher seizure frequency and right hemisphere lateralization the risk for peer difficulties. Lower cognitive functioning was found associated with overall increased mental health difficulties and a lower VIQ was predictive of all types of difficulties. Developing a firm understanding of the risk factors that contribute to mental health comorbidities in focal paediatric epilepsy can help identify and provide assessment and intervention to children who are at higher risk earlier, thus significantly improving quality of life.

Pedagogisk utredning

Wallman, Ulrika January 2012 (has links)

The aim of this study was to search criterion validity of evidence to the Human Figure Drawing (HFD) as a form of emotional measure. Also, gender influences and type of school were studied in developing of the drawing. Thus, this study had 91 children from a city of S?o Paulo, 57 girls (62.6%) and 34 boys (37.4%), aged 11 (52.7%) and 12 years old ( 47.3%) who were attending basic education institutions (-47.3% private - and public - 52.7%). The instruments used were: the HDF evaluated by emotional difficulties system developed by Wechsler (2013) and YSR - Youth Self Report. The results obtained in the two instruments were compared by the Pearson correlation for total emotional indicators. The specific items of HFD were compared with the behavioral dimensions of YSR. Differences of gender and type of school were analyzed by analysis of variance. The results showed no significant correlation between total emotional indicators in the drawings and in the total of YSR there being no validity by external criteria. 4 items showed significant positive correlations and 7 items showed significant negative correlations. The results suggest the need to review the indicators taken as emotional as it found no evidence of validity for external criterion when measured according to the obtained total. The conclusion is the need for more studies on the existence of emotional indicators in the design considering that its use is widespread in the professional practice of psychologists.

Children in need of special support. A study of preschool teachers’ experience regarding children in need of special support.

Hjalmarsson, Git January 2014 (has links)
The study is a qualitative study with a hermeneutic, phenomenological approach. The purpose of the study is too understand and describe how seven preschool teachers experience their efforts with children in need of special support in the preschool. The study’s results show that the preschool teachers believe that they work with children in need of special support. All respondents report about children in need of special support of socio emotional nature. They describe that they work with children with troubles communicating, concentrating, control impulses, and who needs support in their relationships with other children and with grown-ups. The preschool teachers acknowledge that they contemplate which children that really are children in need of special support. They highlight that every child have different needs and pre-conditions. The results of the study show that the preschool teachers have strategies in their efforts with children in need of special support. Strategies which are brought forward and considered successful include to create closeness and safety, to capture interest and motivation, to support the children’s play, to create clearness and structure, to work with small groups of children, to benefit from the outdoor environment, and to cooperate within and between teams. The respondents think these strategies benefit all children in the children’s group. The results also show that the preschool teachers experience some difficulties related to supporting children in need of special support. Difficulties brought forward include too large children’s groups, too few staff members, the tendency to make a child into a scapegoat, flaws in connection and flaws in the interaction.
