The thesis studies how and why ethnicity was used as a ground for separation in order to establish education that was segregated from the normal teaching in elementary schools. The thesis focuses on the educational policy targeted at Gypsies, vagrants and nomadic reindeer-herding Sámi. Due to their ways of living they did not fit into the general Swedish education, which was based on domicile. My aim is to problematise research of the teaching that was offered to Sámi and Gypsies. The safety zone has been used as a metaphor for analysing a physical, spatial way of thinking, where the location of the educational environment in relation to the surrounding society was focused on. The concept has also been used in order to analyse a dimension of educational content that was a matter of forming the pupils’ way of thinking and knowledge. What may at first glance be perceived as primitive and poor, e.g. teaching out of doors, may also, as I see it, be interpreted as a manifestation of a radical educational current. The education policy was moreover a concern not only for the state or for centrally placed actors but engaged the local authority community and other actors. The study shows how actors at different levels in a country committed to education handled issues concerning ambulatory ethnic groups. It was not the same issues that were relevant for the groups, but they involved a common pattern of thought. The education policy, teaching activities and sorting process that are described developed under the influence of international educational and socio-political currents and were shaped by politicians, civil servants, experts, teachers and all sorts of “amateurs”. It is the scope of their knowledge basis, opinions, proposals and actions that is focused on. The thesis also deals with a complicated justification process for identification, sorting and implementation of a separative education, where quite often a “Swedishness” that was difficult to capture was articulated as a norm in relation to the deviant groups.

'Paper gypsies' : representations of the gypsy figure in British literature, c.1780-1870

Representations of the Gypsies and their lifestyle were widespread in British culture in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This thesis analyzes the varying literary and artistic responses to the Gypsy figure in the period circa 1780-1870. Addressing not only well-known works by William Wordsworth, Jane Austen, Walter Scott, John Clare, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold and George Eliot, but also lesser-known or neglected works by Gilbert White, Hannah More, George Crabbe and Samuel Rogers, unpublished archival material from Princess Victoria's journals, and a range of articles from the periodical press, this thesis examines how the figure of the Gypsy was used to explore differing conceptions of the landscape, identity and freedom, as well as the authoritative discourses of law, religion and science. The influence of William Cowper's Gypsy episode in Book One of The Task is shown to be profound, and its effect on ensuing literary representations of the Gypsy is an example of my interpretation of Wim Willem's term ‘paper Gypsies': the idea that literary Gypsies are often textual (re)constructions of other writers' work, creating a shared literary, cultural and artistic heritage. A focus on the picturesque and the Gypsies' role within that genre is a strong theme throughout this thesis. The ambiguity of picturesque Gypsy representations challenges the authority of the leisured viewer, provoking complex responses that either seek to contain the Gypsy's disruptive potential or demonstrate the figure's refusal to be controlled. An examination of texts alongside contemporary paintings and sketches of Gypsies by Princess Victoria, George Morland, Thomas Gainsborough, J. M. W. Turner, John Constable and John Everett Millais, elucidates the significance of the Gypsies as ambiguous ciphers in both literature and art.

Au XVIIIe siècle, les Bohémiens sont déjà présents dans le royaume de France et ses différentes provinces depuis plus de trois cents ans. Dans les deux derniers siècles de l’Ancien Régime, leur mode de vie est progressivement criminalisé, ce qui aboutit à leur rejet dans les franges marginales des vagabonds, voleurs, etc. Par conséquent, dans l’historiographie de ces groupes en Europe occidentale à l’époque moderne, la législation pénale et les archives judiciaires occupent une place prépondérante. Toutefois, il convient de dépasser une lecture univoque de ces documents. L’étude de la réglementation visant les Bohémiens en Lorraine et les considérations de la doctrine fournissent un large cadre d’analyse, mais les nombreuses pièces des procès permettent d’accéder à une réalité anthropologique plus subtile dans la mesure où les magistrats doivent prouver la qualité de Bohémien, et, à cette fin, cherchent à caractériser les accusés. C’est au moyen de techniques d’enquêtes, d’interrogatoires, et d’informations judiciaires qu’ils s’efforcent de mener à bien cette entreprise. La collecte archivistique a principalement mobilisé les fonds de bailliages et de maréchaussées, et s’est notamment fondée sur le corpus largement inédit du bailliage d’Allemagne. La masse conséquente des archives judiciaires criminelles relative au vagabondage a nécessité un véritable travail d’enquête visant tout d’abord à repérer les Bohémiens. Les pièces de procédure se révèlent donc une source d’informations importante, et, au travers des interrogatoires individuels, une identité collective se dessine. Le « métier de Bohémien » apparaît comme notion centrale dans la caractérisation de ces groupes. Le caractère transnational de la circulation des Bohémiens lorrains, dont on trouve des traces sur tout le territoire du royaume de France, en Belgique, au Luxembourg, dans les provinces allemandes, en Suisse et en Italie, laisse néanmoins transparaître un enracinement dans la région du Palatinat et de la Lorraine allemande. Pour autant, les juges se cantonnent à l’attribution d’une identité virtuelle, qui oblitère une identité réelle marquée par l’insertion des Bohémiens dans le tissu social. La doctrine juridique et les sciences humaines en devenir, s’emparant de la question à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, jouent un rôle important dans ce processus. / In the eighteenth century, the "Bohémiens" are already in the kingdom of France and its provinces since over three hundred years. In the last two centuries of the Ancien Regime, their lifestyle is progressively criminalized, resulting in their rejection in marginal fringes of vagabonds, thieves, etc. Therefore, in the historiography of these groups in Western Europe in the modern era, criminal law and judicial archives dominate. However, it must be moved beyond an unambiguous reading of these documents. The study of the regulation of the "Bohémiens" in Lorraine (in fact Gypsies belonging to the Manouche or Sinti group) and considerations of doctrine provide a broad framework, but the many parts of the trial provide access to a more subtle anthropological reality as judges must prove the gypsy quality, and to this end, seek to characterize the accused. It is through investigative techniques, interrogations, and legal information they seek to carry out this business. The archival collection consisted primarily of garnering data from bailiwicks and maréchaussées, and is particularly based on the largely unpublished body of the bailiwick of Germany ("bailliage d’Allemagne"). The consequent mass of criminal court records relating to vagrancy required a real investigative work, first of all to identify the Gypsies. The pleadings therefore reveal an important source of information, and, through individual interviews, collective identity is emerging. The art of Gypsy ("métier de Bohémien") appears as a central concept in the characterization of these groups. Transnational nature of the movement of Lorraine’s "Bohémiens", whose traces are found throughout the territory of the kingdom of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, in the German provinces, Switzerland and Italy, lets nonetheless see strong roots in the Palatinate region and the German Lorraine. Still, judges are confined to the allocation of a virtual identity, which obliterates a real identity marked by the integration of Gypsies into the social fabric. The legal doctrine and human sciences in the making, seizing the question at the end of the eighteenth century, play an important role in this process.

Different cultures have legends which affect the people and societies in which these legends are traded. Most legends are ecotypified, but some legends can survive even when those who tell them move. The aim of this study is to identify some characteristic features of the legend tradition within the Bosnian diaspora in Sweden, and to identify which type of legends that live on in the Swedish environment. The study is conducted as an interview study and the results analyzed with a hermeneutic approach. The study identifies five different types of legends that are categorized into three different categories: erotic, trauma and fear. The results show a fear among the respondents that if the legends disappear, a loss of part of their Bosnian identity will follow. The conclusion show that the category of fear lives on in the Bosnian diaspora, whilst legends building on trauma and eroticism are at risk of disappearing in a Swedish environment.

Cette recherche s’est initialement constituée autour de la réalisation de films documentaires et d’une collecte d’images vernaculaires produites dans le « quartier tsigane » (une « ţigănie ») du village de Dițești, au sud de la Roumanie. Dès le début de l’enquête, mes interlocuteurs m’indiquent que leur tsiganie est peuplée d’images ; des telenovelas, des images domestiques, des « films de commande familiaux », etc. Chaque situation filmée fait ainsi l’objet d’intenses négociations entre des pratiques et des expériences filmiques contrastées. Ce travail de description et de reconstitution de l’expérience vécue et sédimentée des images de mes interlocuteurs, par l’observation de ses ramifications à la fois dans le monde social et dans une histoire et une écologie des images, a successivement pris la forme d’une enquête par les arts filmiques, d’une histoire visuelle et numérique des figures tsiganes des industries culturelles roumaines, et enfin d’une archéologie des pratiques filmiques vernaculaires en ţigănie.Bien que l’échelle de l’analyse soit celle de la monographie, l’enjeu de ce travail est de montrer combien cette forme d’expérience reconfigure la pratique des arts filmiques et élargit le champ phénoménal des différentes traditions de recherche qui composent le domaine de l’anthropologie visuelle (« ethnographie expérimentale », Indigenous media et film ethnographique). En somme, cet ensemble de propositions visuelles et manuscrites considère les arts filmiques comme des outils analytiques permettant de comprendre et faire comprendre l’expérience vécue des personnes filmées et l’agentivité des images dans le monde social que nous habitons. Ce qui implique, c’est à la fois la conclusion de cette recherche et le postulat du manuscrit, de considérer les cinéastes et les interlocuteurs de l’anthropologue comme de véritables observateurs et théoriciens des images et des réalités vécues. Ainsi, en appréhendant les images au prisme de l’expérience des images des enquêtés, cette recherche expose la manière dont les arts filmiques – en tant que pratique et discipline – produisent de nouveaux questionnements anthropologiques. Complémentairement, et de manière plus critique, ce savoir des images invite à reconsidérer avec attention la manière dont les anthropologues (et les cinéastes) délèguent parfois aux technologies de l’image des fonctions descriptives, mémorielles, ou transactionnelles. / This research initially consisted of the production of documentary films and a collection of vernacular images produced in the "Gypsy Quarter" ( "ţigănie") of Diţeşti, a village in the south of Romania. From the start of this investigation, my interlocutors informed me that their ţigănie is populated by images; telenovelas, domestic pictures, “commissioned home movies”, etc. Each filmed situation is therefore the subject of intense negotiations between practices and contrasting filmic experiences. This work is based on a description and the reconstruction of the lived experiences, sedimented with images of my interlocutors. By observing the ramifications of this work, both in the social world and in a history and ecology of images, it has progressively taken the form of an investigation by the filmic arts, a visual and digital history of Gypsy figures of the Romanian cultural industries and an archeology of vernacular film practices in ţigănie. Although the scale of the analysis is that of a monograph, the challenge of this work is to show how this form of experience reconfigures the practice of filmic arts and broadens the phenomenal field of different research traditions that constitute the field of Visual Anthropology ("experimental ethnography", Indigenous media and ethnographic film). In short, this set of visual and textual proposals considers the filmic arts as analytical tools for understanding and making understood the lived experience of filmed people and the agentivity of images in the social world we inhabit. What this thesis proposes, both in its hypothesis and conclusion, is to consider both filmmakers and the anthropologist’s interlocutors as true observers and theoreticians of images and experienced realities. Thus, by understanding images through the experience of the respondents’ images, this research demonstrates the way in which the filmic arts - as a practice and a discipline - generate new anthropological questions. In addition, and more critically, this knowledge of images invites us to reconsider attentively the way in which anthropologists (and filmmakers) sometimes delegate the descriptive, memorial or transactional functions of images to visual technologies.

The aim of my thesis is to discuss the possible uses of the concept of autonomy in the study of conversions of Roma to Charismatic/Pentecostal Christianity. Focus on empowerment and social inclusion has been prevailing in the field, and critical reflection of questions of governance and oppression is lacking. I use the thesis by Patrick Williams (1987; 1991; 1993a), according to whom the French Gypsies who converted to Pentecostalism achieved autonomy or at least a sense of autonomy, which allowed them to downplay the role of structural factors and other people behind their actions. Through a case study from ethnographic fieldwork in a Romani Charismatic congregation in Western Bohemia I extend and refine the concept. The main theoretical innovations come from the contemporary moral philosophy, especially the theory of autonomy (of the oppressed) by Christman (2014) who defines autonomy as a reflexive affirmation of an assumed practical identity, a "life worth living". The story which missionaries in Márov, the place of my fieldwork, put forward, was that Roma converted from being pimps and drug dealers. Blank Pages of the Holocaust: Gypsies in Yugoslavia During World War II

After a general overview of the persecution of Gypsies (Roma) during World War II, this thesis focuses on the situation of Gypsies on the territory of Serbia and Croatia. The two republics are chosen because of their unique structures during the years 1941 to 1945. Both republics had puppet regimes set up by Germany; however, Croatia was an ally to Germany and strove to mirror the Third Reich in all its policies. The regime's head, Ante Pavelic, was known as one of the most brutal and merciless men on the territory of Yugoslavia, and with him Croatian paramilitary forces committed great atrocities in concentration camps established in Croatia. Serbia was divided up among Germany and its allies, and its racial policies varied depending on the occupying forces. In Croatia, all Gypsies were annihilated, but in Serbia many survived because of the protection provided by local peasantry and occupying forces from Hungary, Bulgaria or Italy. The thesis points at four main findings: (1) the negligence toward the Gypsies' plight and persecution; (2) the fact that, according to Nazi definitions, the persecution of Gypsies was based on their race rather than their style of living; (3) the fact that there were multiple concentration camps throughout the territory of Yugoslavia, with the most brutal camp at Jasenovac in Croatia; and (4) the fact that the Holocaust was far more than a Jewish phenomenon. Examining the two regions and highlighting them, the thesis proves that the fate of Gypsies in German-occupied territories of Yugoslavia was the same as the fate of Jews, that they were persecuted under superficial excuses, but with racial sentiments as the primary motivation. This new material, along with little known facts, documents, and stories show how marginalized Gypsies have been since the end of the war, and how little scholarly attention has been paid to their suffering. These new and some unpublished materials also help depict the brutality of Jasenovac, the Auschwitz of the Balkans, and prove that the atrocities during World War II were not committed only by German soldiers, but that they reached their peak among people of other nationalities as well. Finally, the thesis claims that Gypsies deserve to be placed in the study of the Holocaust along side of Jews, and to receive the rights and remembrance that Jews have been afforded.

Sowohl Ägypter als auch Ashkali sind heute in der Verfassung der Republik Kosovo festgeschriebene communities mit Minderheitenrechten. Ihre Angehörige sind mehrheitlich muslimisch. Ashkali und Ägypter sind albanischsprachig während Roma meist einen der drei im Kosovo vorkommenden Dialekte des Romanes sprechen. In dieser Arbeit wurde untersucht, wie und vor welchem Hintergrund neue ethnische Identifizierungen in Konfliktgesellschaften entstehen, welche historischen und politischen Rahmenbedingungen dafür gegeben sein müssen, damit sie sich erfolgreich etablieren und was der jeweilige Vorteil für eine Identifizierung mit der einen oder der anderen Gruppe ist. Historisch-kritisch untersucht wurden schriftliche Ego-Dokumente von Ägyptern und Ashkali (Webseiten, Offene Briefe, Artikel und Monographien) sowie problemzentrierte Interviews, Statistiken, Menschenrechtsberichten und Artikel aus serbischen und kosovarischen Zeitungen. Der Zusammenhang von Antiziganismus und dem Wunsch nach Schaffung einer neuen nationalen Kategorie wurde dabei in der historischen Perspektive deutlich: in den 1960er/70er Jahren grenzten sich jugoslawische Roma von den negativen Stereotypen und ihrer Bezeichnung als „Zigeuner“ ab, promoteten die Bezeichnung ''Roma'' und vernetzten sich mit Roma anderer europäischer Ländern. Ab Ende der 1980er Jahre versuchten in Südwest-Mazedonien einige Menschen sich zu organisieren und ihr Image als „Zigeuner“ zu verlieren, ohne gleichzeitig den Albanern zugerechnet zu werden, die sich von Jugoslawien separieren wollten. Sie organisierten sich über die Republik Mazedonien und auch Jugoslawien hinaus und schafften es, in Serbien und Mazedonien als positive Alternative zur albanischen Minderheit anerkannt zu werden und ihre eigene Kategorie in der Volkszählung zu erhalten. Die Ashkali entstanden 1999 als Ausweg aus der Nachkriegs-Gewalt im Kosovo. / Both Egyptians and Ashkali are formally defined as communities with minority rights in the current constitution of the Republic of Kosovo. Their members are overwhelmingly Muslim. Ashkali and Egyptians are Albanian-speaking whereas Roma tend to speak one of the three Romany dialects spoken in Kosovo. This work examined how new ethnic identifications originate in societies in conflict and the causes behind this development; the historical and political conditions that must be in place to enable these new identities to become successfully established and what the respective benefits are behind identifying with one group over another. Written autobiographical documents from Egyptians and Ashkali (web sites, open letters, articles and monographs) as well as problem-centred interviews, statistics, human rights reports and articles from Serbian and Kosovan newspapers were critically examined from a historical standpoint. The relationship between antiziganism and the desire to establish a new national ethnic grouping is evident when viewed from a historical perspective: in the 1960s and 70s the Yugoslav Roma distanced themselves from the negative stereotypes associated with the name “Zigeuner” (gypsy), promoted the name Roma and built links with Roma from other European countries. At the end of the 1980s groups in south-west Macedonia joined together to shed their “Zigeuner” (gypsy) image, creating a group distinct from the Albanians who in turn were trying to separate themselves from Yugoslavia. The groups became more organised, extending beyond the Republic of Macedonia and Yugoslavia and they succeeded in being recognised as a positive alternative to the Albanian minority in Serbia and Macedonia where they were included in the census as a separate ethnic category. The Ashkali identity was created in 1999 in response to the post-war violence in Kosovo.

Forces of change : A theoretical analysis of syncretism between Theravada Buddhism and animistic indigenous beliefs in Thailand

Urak Lawoi is the name of one of the sea nomadic tribes which lives along the shores of Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia. They are spread on many of the islands in the Andaman Sea archipelago and Ko Lanta is the main settlement. Urak Lawoi is regarded as the indigenous people of the island and they live there as a minority together with Muslims and Thai-Chinese.  The traditional religion and culture of Urak Lawoi is built upon the animistic belief of their ancestors. In the last 20 years Ko Lanta has experienced a tremendous process of change caused by increasing tourism. The conditions of the Urak Lawoi and their way of life have dramatically changed. The fact that this process brings consequences for the traditional culture and religion is obvious, but in what direction is it developing? To be able to interpret and expound the material from my field studies among Urak Lawoi on Ko Lanta in October-December 2009, I have done a literature search to investigate the animistic traditions and the syncretistic nature of belief in Thailand. I have also tried to find theories about the process of religious change and the forces working behind them. In this essay I am trying to do a theoretical analysis of the field study material using theories and parallel examples I have found in the literature.
