The second book ((original Basque title) Beribilez; (engl.) By car) by Jean Etxepare (1877-1935) is analysed in this doctoral thesis. The aim of this research is to define the author’s ideology/ in his intellectual maturity and his image of the Basque Country, along the journey made by car through the Southern Provinces. Semiotic Methodology (Philippe Hamon) and Imagology (Daniel-Henri Pageaux) have been used as a study method. We have looked at the academic training of Jean Etxepare, and we have seen that in the Northern Basque Country he was confronted with the hegemonic traditional catholic way of thinking. During the years of dissent between the State and the Church, Etxepare chose the free-thinking path, inspired by German philosophy. In the area of aesthetics, his view of the Basque landscape is mostly economicist. His perspective of the appreciation of rural lands combines with a poetic mysticism. He considers the display of Baroque religious luxury that he sees in the Sanctuary of Loyola, spiritually deficient; we can see that, on the one hand, we are dealing with an intellectual author of petit bourgeois standing and sound artistic judgement... On the other hand, even if he proves to be a knowledgeable person, he is very capable of enjoying the small pleasures of life as gastronomy, wines, dances and eroticism in a harmonious and measured way. He moves moderately away from traditional confessional asceticism, giving in his book to the pleasures of the body an unusual and enlightening place unknown to the catholic dominant literature. In the field of ethics, he criticizes the urban growth of San Sebastian: he proclaims secular spirituality against the materialism and degeneration of the high bourgeoisie. He prophesied that there would be the Second World War, because he saw the human beings lacking mutual respect. As a positivist, he criticizes any irrational belief. Finally, he indicates that in adulthood he has been aligned with the Greek philosophy of measure, in spite of his non-conformist youth. About the Basque Country, he intends to promote solidarity between the two sides of the frontier, reinterpreting the history passages in a diplomatic way. His attitude towards the South is of a philia one (Pageaux). As a conclusion, we can say that the writer measured the expression of his dissident way of thinking, because he did not want his second book to be rejected as had been the case with the first one (Buruxkak, 1910).

Head of darkness : representations of "madness" in postcolonial Zimbabwean literatureChigwedere, Yuleth 09 1900 (has links)
This study critically explores the numerous strains of “madness” that Zimbabwean authors represent in their postcolonial literature. My focus is on their reflection of “madness” as either an individual state of being, or as symptomatic of the socio-political and economic condition in the country. I have adopted insights from an existential psychoanalytic framework in my literary analysis in order to bring in an innovative dimension to this investigation of the phenomenon. I consider this an appropriate stance for this study as it has enriched my reading of the literary texts under study, as well as played a crucial role in providing me with effective conceptual tools for understanding the manifestations of “madness” in the texts. The literary works that I critique are Shimmer Chinodya’s Chairman of Fools (2009), Mashingaidze Gomo’s A Fine Madness (2010), Brian Chikwava’s Harare North, Petina Gappah’s An Elegy for Easterly (2009), Tsitsi Dangarembga’s The Book of Not (2006) and Yvonne Vera’s Without a Name (1994) and Butterfly Burning (1998). These selected texts offer me an opportunity to analyse the gender dynamics and discourses of “madness”, which I do from a peculiarly indigenous and feminist perspective. My study reveals that these authors’ representations are located in and shaped by very specific temporal and spatial contexts, which, in turn, shed light on the characters’ existential reality, revealing aspects of their relationship with the world around them. It demonstrates that their notions of “madness” denote different markers of identity, such as race, class, gender, and religion, amongst others. Significantly, my literary analysis illustrates the varied permutations of “madness” by exposing how these authors characterise the phenomenon as trauma, as alienation, as depression, as insanity, as subversion, as freedom, and even as a sign of the
state of affairs in Zimbabwe. This investigation also reveals that because “madness” in these authors’ fiction is intricately linked to the question of identity, it manifests in situations where the characters’ sense of ontological security is compromised in some way. What emerges is that “madness” can either signify a grapple with identity, a loss of it, or a struggle for its redefinition / English Studies / D.Litt. et Phil. (English)

民族發展及其文學史—紐西蘭毛利民族與台灣原住民族的比較 / The Development of Ethnicity and its History of Literature: A Comparison of New Zealand Māori People and Taiwan Indigenous Peoples梁文, Liang, Wen (Lawa Iwan) Unknown Date (has links)
The aim of the thesis, The Development of Ethnicity and its History of Literature: A Comparison of New Zealand Māori People and Taiwan Indigenous Peoples, is to compare the ethnic developments of the New Zealand Maori and Taiwan’s indigenous peoples, and further characterize the history of their literature. Before the New Southbound Policy, researchers have been devoted to contributing abundant Maori research. However, many of them only chose a certain topic to write about, ignoring other perspectives or orientations, which only revealed the tip of the iceberg. For this reason, the thesis ascertained other aspects with a holistic approach. Several similarities exist between the Maori and Taiwan’s indigenous peoples: both were Austronesian peoples, and share similar languages and cultures. In addition, they both undergone colonization and launched ethnic movements to regain their rights.
The thesis is divided into three periods, which are before the ethnic movement, during the ethnic movement, and after the ethnic movement. Each chapter demonstrates its social context and the significant ethnic writers at that time. The thesis first illustrates Maori and Taiwan indigenous peoples’ unawakened ethnic consciousness through their literary writings. During the ethnic movement, both ethnic groups launched the ethnic movement and published their political perspectives during political and economic instability. Afterwards, the Maori and Taiwan’s indigenous peoples share different values in accordance with different social context after their respective ethnic movement. Finally, the thesis examines their social contexts and their literature through three aspects of ethnic literature, which are identity, language, and theme.
The thesis is composed of seven chapters. The introduction reviews the purpose of the study, its motivation, and the background. Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 provide an overview of ethnic certification, the status of ethnic language, and the distribution of Maori and Taiwan’s indigenous peoples. Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 depicts Maori and Taiwan indigenous peoples’ social contexts and literature respectively. By comparing both ethnic groups, Chapter 5 shows their similarities and differences. Conclusions are drawn in Chapter 7. The conclusion offer incentives and disincentives from the Maori’s experience, which could be the inspiration for Taiwan’s indigenous peoples.

Středověké rukopisné knihovny řeholních kanovníků sv. Augustina v Čechách / Medieval Manuscript Libraries of the Regular Canons of St. Augustin in BohemiaEbersonová, Adéla January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation examines the medieval libraries of the order of Regular Canons of St. Augustine in Bohemia. The research is concentrated on manuscripts that were written before the end of the 15th century, together with handwritten parts bound together with old prints and fragments removed from manuscripts. The aim of the study is to fill gaps in existing research and provide a systematic overview of the libraries of canonries in Bohemia, namely Roudnice, Jaroměř, Karlov in Prague, Sadská, Rokycany, Třeboň, and Borovany. The research of these libraries is based mainly on preserved manuscripts. Their affiliation to the libraries can be identified with certainty thanks to ownership remarks, in some cases also by typical shelf marks or notes about the content of manuscripts, possibly by other circumstances connected with the history of the books. In addition, there are contemporary sources of the history of some libraries (library catalogues, inventories, records of gifts and testaments, notes about payments for manuscripts, records of the purchase of the books, or reports of the sale of manuscripts in exile). There is one chapter dedicated to each canonry, including a bibliographic overview, a brief summary of the history of the canonry and a detailed survey of the history of its library. The core...

A magyar irodalom kialakulása és története a Bácska és a Bánság területén / (The Development and History of Hungarian Literature on the Territory of Bácska and Bánság)Mak Ferenc 09 June 2013 (has links)

/
The half century following the eradication of absolutism witnessed the renaissance of literature, the era of embourgeoisement, the time when the new literary and scientific institutions were established throughout Hungary. After 1867 young people in gymnasiums were taught by teachers erudite in classical philology and literature; their papers in literary history and analyses were regularly published in the school reports, and their school textbooks and studies written for the general public reached a wide circle of readers. It was at this time that the interest of a number of teachers in the gymnasiums in Zombor and Pancsova was aroused in Serbian literature; consequently, works of Serbian romantic poetry and heroic songs appeared in Hungarian translation one after the other, and the first Hungarian – Serbian dictionaries were compiled. The first Hungarian novel was published in Zombor in 1868, and was followed by several in aesthetically more and more purified form until 1918. Lyric poetry became imbued with the atmosphere, sensation of life and experience of the landscape of Bácska and Bánát, while travelogues, scientific and literary at the same time, revealed the beauties and the cultural history of the homeland and beyond it of the Lower Danube Region, Slavonia and Bosnia. Within the span of fifty years Hungarian literature of our region developed from its initial successes as far as Dezső Kosztolány’s generation whose members created works worthy of being ranked among the best works of 20th century Hungarian literature

"Ich dichte in die wüste Zeit" - Ich-Konstruktionen in der Lyrik der deutschsprachiger Schriftsteller_innen Israels / "I am writing into deserted times" - Constructions of the I in the German poetry of the Israeli writers Netti Boleslav and Jenny AloniPoppe, Judith 27 August 2015 (has links)
