Os direitos sociais e sua função no capitalismo / Social rights and its function inside the capitalism

Campos, Fernando Marques de 24 May 2010 (has links)
The aim of this work is to study the social rights beyond the issue of the State decreasing after Welfare State´s crisis. The work analyses the upper limits and the potentialities of the social rights inside the capitalism structure, studying their origins, consolidations and refractions. Using the economical, political and juridical view point, this work studies the social rights during the XX and XXI century and tends to conclude that social rights are nowadays the biggest issue in our society based on capital`s hegemony. In this way the Brazilian case is a good sample of this dispute which could be introduced a distinctive element the consequences from the underdevelopment and secondary role in capitalism´s world.

Inside/outside - and all between

Alton Borgelin, Teresa January 2019 (has links)
I feel something on the INSIDE of my body, a feeling of nagging worry. It is an emotion equally important as every other emotions we humans have. But the feeling of worry is very complex as it may come in different shapes and sizes, and how much it affects us differs from person to person. For some people thoughts of worry escalates and becomes overwhelming which causes an emotion of anxiety which in turn could lead to a panik attack. In my exam project and my artistic presentation I focus on that emotion of anxiety when you panic and you loose control. The reason for this emotion could be many but I am interested in how expectations and demands both from ourselves, others and society leads to us trying to keep it all together, stay in control and/or wanting to show an OUTSIDE that everything is fine.  Through social media, internet and commercials we are all exposed to information which tells us how to achieve ”the perfect life” and images of people having an eventful life. All of this creates expectations. In society today worry and anxiety are emotions that are connected to something negative and is often seen as a weakness. In our attempt to hide the emotion of worry and anxiety we communicate to the people on the outside that everything is fine, by for example using jewelry, make-up and clothes to show a beautiful facade almost like putting on a shield before we go outside to meet the world. Why do we do that? And for whom? I chose the necklace as the traditional piece of jewelry to symbolize beauty, stability and to communicate to people that you have everything under control and that everything is fine. The necklace  becomes part of the facade that will stand for beauty, tradition and a measure of prosperity. This is what you show on the outside of the body but on the inside that is where you hide away your worries and anxiety which is built up due to expectations. Expectations which in time will be too many and too much for you to handle, the same as with anxiety. One part of my artistic presentation is to try and visualise how these expectations are put upon you while you are trying to control them and at the same time show off a stable and beautiful outside. But no matter how hard you try to communicate that everything is fine and trying to keep everything together, in the end, what you feel on the inside of the body will seep out to the outside. I am making a attempt to show how this eventually makes you loose control. The beautiful necklace is impossible to sustain which also makes me question my own traditional view of what a necklace is. Another part of my artistic presentation is about value and to make objects that could be used as conversation pieces to start a dialog about worry and anxiety. The materials I am using symbolises the feeling when anxiety takes control of your body and staines the individual. The aim of this exam project is to raise thoughts about a complex emotion, norms in society, and to investigate what a necklace is or could be. Jewelry is a way of communicating with other people and one way to show who you are or whom you want to be. As a contemporary art jeweller I am exploring my topic in a conceptual way.

Exploring Narrator-Reader Relationships with Jim Thompson’s Victims of Circumstance: Lou Ford, Dolly Dillon, William “Kid” Collins, and Charles Bigger

Unknown Date (has links)
By examining Jim Thompson’s novels, published between 1952-1955–The Killer Inside Me, A Hell of a Woman, After Dark, My Sweet, and Savage Night–this essay interrogates the relationship created between the narrator and the reader, how the narrator–and Thompson in turn–highlights certain societal flaws, emphasizing how ethical consequence is born out of the attempt to attain freedom from one’s cultural circumstance–both in terms of economic restraint and mental health status. Through this, Thompson implies that the reader is trapped in similar economic and ethical predispositions. The reader is often left questioning what they might have done, or been able to do, in similar circumstances. This creates a larger frame by which Thompson implies that the reader is trapped in similar economic and ethical pre-dispositions as his narrators. He highlights societal flaws, demonstrating how the pursuit of freedom of one’s cultural circumstance bears ethical consequence. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2018. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Business incubators : Knowledge transfer and networks creation as key success factors

Villarroel Rojas, Mayra Veronica January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to analyze business incubators and the relevant factors that take place inside these organizations. The methodology used was a case study approach, which investigates a real environment, in this case: NeoEmpresa, a business incubator located in La Paz, Bolivia. The explanatory approach is also considered in this research since the purpose is to explain the business incubation characteristics as well as understand the importance of knowledge transfer and network creation inside business incubators. The findings propose that the most adequate incubation model strongly depends on the incubator’s main purpose and that the learning practices that take place inside an incubator involve knowledge transfer, more considered experience transfer, and networking as relevant factors.

"Att låta dem det rör komma till tals" : En studie om några elevers beskrivningar av att vara elev i gymnasiesärskolan

Landmark, Angelica January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to describe some pupils’ experiences of being a student in upper secondary schools forintellectual disabilities, and highlight their stories. The study has its focus on learning, influence, participation and belonging. It is a study with its base on an inside perspective; the understanding of the pupils' own perspective. In order to understand the pupils' perspective, you need interpretation. That are the theoretical approach to the basic view of the hermeneutic character, hence I found hermeneutics appropriate for my study. As a method to be able to find the answer of the purpose of the study, I have used the life-world interviews. The result of the study is based on the interviews of four pupils. The results that emerged was that all the pupils were positive about their school, they saw a school where were able to feel togetherness. They all describe that the purpose of education is about learning. Some also thought that learning could create better situations for them in adulthood. The results also showed that the pupils are aware of their needs and difficulties and can relate them to different situations they have faced and will face. What also became obvious in the pupils' stories was that there was limited interaction with high school.

Marginally hydrophobic transmembrane α-helices shaping membrane protein folding

de Marothy, Tuuli Minttu Virkki January 2014 (has links)
Most membrane proteins are inserted into the membrane co-translationally utilizing the translocon, which allows a sufficiently long and hydrophobic stretch of amino acids to partition into the membrane. However, X-ray structures of membrane proteins have revealed that some transmembrane helices (TMHs) are surprisingly hydrophilic. These marginally hydrophobic transmembrane helices (mTMH) are not recognized as TMHs by the translocon in the absence of local sequence context. We have studied three native mTMHs, which were previously shown to depend on a subsequent TMH for membrane insertion. Their recognition was not due to specific interactions. Instead, the presence of basic amino acids in their cytoplasmic loop allowed membrane insertion of one of them. In the other two, basic residues are not sufficient unless followed by another, hydrophobic TMH. Post-insertional repositioning are another way to bring hydrophilic residues into the membrane. We show how four long TMHs with hydrophilic residues seen in X-ray structures, are initially inserted as much shorter membrane-embedded segments. Tilting is thus induced after membrane-insertion, probably through tertiary packing interactions within the protein. Aquaporin 1 illustrates how a mTMH can shape membrane protein folding and how repositioning can be important in post-insertional folding. It initially adopts a four-helical intermediate, where mTMH2 and TMH4 are not inserted into the membrane. Consequently, TMH3 is inserted in an inverted orientation. The final conformation with six TMHs is formed by TMH2 and 4 entering the membrane and TMH3 rotating 180°. Based on experimental and computational results, we propose a mechanism for the initial step in the folding of AQP1: A shift of TMH3 out from membrane core allows the preceding regions to enter the membrane, which provides flexibility for TMH3 to re-insert in its correct orientation. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following paper was unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Manuscript.</p>

Single-molecule fluorescence microscopy studies of DNA-surface interactions on chemically graded organosilane surfaces

Li, Zi January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Chemistry / Daniel A. Higgins / This dissertation describes the application of wide-field single-molecule fluorescence microscopy techniques to investigations of DNA-surface interactions on chemically graded organosilane surfaces. The adsorption and desorption behaviors of double-stranded (ds) plasmid DNA along the amino-trimethoxysilane and octyl-trichlorosilane gradients were explored as a function of solution pH, solution ionic strength and surface properties. The results provide an improved fundamental understanding of DNA interactions with different surfaces and are certain to aid in the development and advancement of DNA-based biological and biomedical devices. Three distinct experiments were performed in completion of the work for this dissertation. In the first study, total internal reflection fluorescence (TIRF) microscopy was employed to study DNA interactions with aminosilane gradient surfaces under relatively acidic and basic environments. Electrical potentials were applied to assist DNA adsorption and desorption. The single-molecule data clearly showed that DNA capture and release was achieved on the monolayer and submonolayer coated regions of the aminosilane gradient surface under relatively basic pH conditions, with the help of an electrical potential. Meanwhile, DNA adsorption was found to be quasi-reversible on the multilayers at the high aminosilane end of the gradient in the relatively acidic solution. The results of these studies demonstrate the importance of manipulating the electrostatic interactions of DNA with charged surfaces in order to achieve DNA capture and release. The fundamental knowledge of the DNA-surface interactions gained in these studies will be helpful in diverse fields ranging from the layer-by-layer assembly of polyelectrolyte-based thin films to the selective electronic sensing of charged biomolecules. In the second study, the local dielectric properties of the least polar environments in dsDNA were assessed by using the solvatochromic dye, nile red, as a polarity-sensitive probe. TIRF spectroscopic imaging methods were employed in these studies. Although the dielectric constant within the least polar regions of dsDNA was previously predicted by theoretical and computational methods, no experimental measurements of its value had been reported to date. The results provide important knowledge of the factors governing the polarity of DNA microenvironments to which intercalators bind, and provide vital experimental support for the values determined in computational studies. In the third study, TIRF microscopy and single molecule tracking methods were employed to study DNA interactions with an opposed two-component C8-silane and aminosilane gradient surface as a function of solution pH. The mobility of surface-adsorbed DNA molecules was explored and quantified in these studies. The preliminary results further demonstrated the importance of electrostatic interactions over hydrophobic interactions in governing the adsorption of DNA to surfaces. The mobility of surface-adsorbed DNA was found to be largely independent of position along the two-component gradient. These studies were originally undertaken as a route to observation of cooperative effects that are believed to govern DNA-surface binding. Unfortunately, no clear evidence of cooperative effects was observed at the mixed regions of the two-component gradient surface.

More precisely, we study optimal monetary policy in models in which either: money is essential, or, money and bonds are coessential. In the first chapter, we study an optimal intervention in a model of outside money. Next, we extend the model to include bonds and interpret its role. Finaly, the last chapter we discuss the problems with the usual modeling aproach to monetary policy transition and its implications

Escritas encarceradas: representações do universo prisional feminino nas páginas do jornal da Penitenciária Talavera Bruce / Written incarcerated: representations of female prison universe in the pages of the newspaper of the Penitentiary Talavera Bruce

Daiane de Oliveira Tavares 31 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation is about the woman's prison house Talavera Bruces periodical named Só isso!. The paper was published between 2004 and 2008. For the analysis of this print, the methodology has been centered in the production, circulation and thinking of the journal. Also analyzing about the possible senses composed in the inmate's writings, for a better understanding of this woman's daily practices, regarding such a peculiar society, and making by that, a record of a unique way of life. Considering the above mentioned background, I tried to understand this material in its destinies and representations, digging deep in its details and peculiarities , searching its universe of meanings and the possibility of understanding the established relations by this subjects deprived of freedom with the possibility of writing inside prison , allowing for us to get to know who were the inmates, how they expressed their sensibilities and subjectivities ,how they lived, why they wrote, and what kind of problems they faced. For the analysis of this periodical I had to get close to elements and methodologies bounded to the History of Writing and also to authors that research and cover the subject of females incarceration. So, the developed interpretation is supported by authors that point out the importance to understand the writings and its foundations. Scholars that debate writers that lived in scenarios of confinement that usually search to occupy their time, experimenting with freedom, or escaping loneliness. Authors that helped to comprehend the writings and representations of one himself and also researchers of History of Education that think and discuss the importance of the journal as a source of investigation. This theme is over a narrow line between many fields of research. During this dissertation I dialog with anthropologists and sociologists whom have useful data regarding the prison world and refine our understanding .The work of research about the journals stood for a better perspective on this females inmates reality, giving value for their writings in a scenario where the rigorous institutional systems eventually dehumanize women. Thus, the right to read and write in prison fan educational and social aspect that is key for the female prisoners survival inside of the institution. This research reflects about the oppression against female inmates and also contributes to build opportunity and rights to the inmates, allowing them dignity and better life conditions while incarcerated.
