Aprendizagem da leitura a partir de material multimodal visando à construção de sentido / Learning how to read from multimodal material aiming at building meaning

Inácio, Adriana da Silva Araújo 07 December 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation takes as a starting point the fact that the process of constructing meanings in multimodal texts involves the contribution of verbal and non-verbal codes, which integrate themselves in a collaborative action in order to establish communication. Therefore, explicit/implicit elements add up to the textual composition in meaningful arrangements materializedinto texts (re)createdby the reading subject. It is important to highlight that this process depends on the reader’s repertoire which involves linguistics, discourse and image knowledge. For this reason, we have chosen to develop a group of 9th grade students with whom I work at a public school in Aracaju verbal and visual language literacy aiming to improve their reading competence and reflexive thinking. For the purpose of achieving such scope, we have developed the digital game Na Trilha dos sentidos, directed into building meanings from strips and publicity ads, both multimodal kinds of texts. We have been supported by the social interactionist linguistic theories related to the conception of genre by Marcuschi (2008); we have resorted to Koch (2006, 2015) to debate the concept of resumption by the pronominal anaphora; we have sought the basis for a concept of reading in Kleiman (2000); we have read Cavalcante e Custódio (2010) for the concept of text and Bakhtin/Volochinov (1998 [1929]) for information about the discursive context and dialogism; Kress e Van Leeuwen (1996) have made it possible for us to organize the visual resources studies, among which we stress salience and framing; besides using Fialho’s ideas (2005) for the pedagogic game as an auxiliary resource functionality, a motivation in the learning process. The study followed the principles of the educational actionresearch, defined by Tripp (2005) as a strategy for developing teachers who aim at enhancing their teaching practices and, consequently, their students’ learning. This theoretical input has contributed for the elaboration of the tasks in the game created by researcher. We have observed, from the application and outcomes analysis, that using this pedagogic resource has leaded to students’ involvement with contents, resulting in a broader comprehension of materials in which linguistic, discursive and imagetic aspects have collaborated in the constitution of a single verbal and visual text. We have also noticed the enhancement of the interpretation of meanings from inferences built by means of diverse language resources combined analysis. In spite of its limited reach, as it was restricted to only one group of students, this research suggests that the use of pedagogic practices with multimodal materials based in games should be increased, as it collaborates with the enlargement of the elementary school students’ comprehension ability.

Ben Ahmed, Houssem Eddine 07 1900 (has links)
Nowadays, the high-fidelity clinical simulation (HFCS) is an outstanding pedagogical strategy, which is increasingly being adopted by several national and international nursing institutions in order to prepare students for their future practice. Despite countless advantages pertaining to HFCS, it appears that many students may feel a sense of stress, anguish, and humiliation if they do not receive the necessary support from their educator in this academic context. Notwithstanding the fact that many nursing researchers emphasize the importance of the educator’s role within the context of simulation, their works did not study the aspect of the educator-students relationship. However, its added value has been highlighted by a large amount of scientific papers, but in other academic contexts, notably classroom, clinical and online environments. Moreover, these studies did not specify the nature of the educator-students relationship, nor did they explore it from a humanistic perspective. Consequently, it was appropriate to add the term “pedagogical” to emphasize the educational aspect of this relationship, and the term “caring” to refer to its humanistic approach. Based on the literature and to our knowledge, no nursing study has explored this type of relationship within the context of HFCS. Thus, this doctoral research was interested in describing and understanding the meaning of the lived experience of a caring pedagogical relationship (CPR) according to the perception of undergraduate nursing students in the context of high-fidelity clinical simulation. In addition, this phenomenological descriptive research aimed to explore its facilitators, barriers, as well as contributions from the students’ perspective. The Relational Caring Inquiry (Cara, 1997; Cara et al., 2017), a descriptive phenomenological method, has been selected to meet the purpose and questions of this research. Individual semi-structured interviews were realized with 19 nursing students, who also participated in a second interview to validate the narrative synthesis. Being inspired by the relational emancipatory pedagogy (Hills & Watson, 2011; Hills et al., 2021), as a disciplinary perspective, the analysis and interpretation of the data collected have allowed the following five eidos-themes to emerge: (1) authentic engagement of the educator toward students, (2) Educator’s conscientization regarding barriers to the development of the CPR, (3) implementation of a safe learning space for students, (4) cocreation of a caring collaboration between educator-students and, finally, (5) pedagogical and caring nature of the relationship contributing to the transformation of learning process. They subsequently facilitated the emergence of the essential structure of the studied phenomenon (CPR), which corresponds to: “an authentic engagement of the educator fostering a safe academic space in order to cocreate a humanistic collaboration with students to transform their learning process within the context of high-fidelity clinical simulation”. This research adds to the body of nursing knowledge a new understanding in regard to the meaning of the CPR by highlighting its characteristics, facilitators, barriers, as well as its contributions in the context of simulation. Our results show that educators play a vital role to promote enriching learning experiences among students in the aforementioned context. Various recommendations arising from our findings have been proposed in different domains of nursing, notably education, research, clinical, management, and sociopolitical. Finally, these aim to provide stakeholders with concrete avenues to advance students’ learning and, more broadly, to humanize nursing education in simulation settings.

Uncontrolled intersection coordination of the autonomous vehicle based on multi-agent reinforcement learning.

McSey, Isaac Arnold January 2023 (has links)
This study explores the application of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) to enhance the decision-making, safety, and passenger comfort of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs)at uncontrolled intersections. The research aims to assess the potential of MARL in modeling multiple agents interacting within a shared environment, reflecting real-world situations where AVs interact with multiple actors. The findings suggest that AVs trained using aMARL approach with global experiences can better navigate intersection scenarios than AVs trained on local (individual) experiences. This capability is a critical precursor to achieving Level 5 autonomy, where vehicles are expected to manage all aspects of the driving task under all conditions. The research contributes to the ongoing discourse on enhancing autonomous vehicle technology through multi-agent reinforcement learning and informs the development of sophisticated training methodologies for autonomous driving.

Interkulturelle Qualifizierung im Rahmen des Hochschulstudiums in Deutschland

Hößler, Ulrich 06 March 2017 (has links)
This study aims at generating an input-process-output model of intercultural qualification in the context of academic education in Germany. The theoretical framework consists of defining in-tercultural qualification and localizing the topic within educational sciences. The topics intercul-tural competence and intercultural learning are discussed separately. There were two empirical studies: 1) 18 former participants of the Extracurricular Study Program for Intercultural Compe-tence at the Regensburg universities have been interviewed about the program’s learning pro-cesses and learning outcomes. Resulting data were analysed using qualitative methods, yielding a set of hypotheses on relations between preconditions, processes and outcomes of intercultural qualification. 2) At the end of the program, 129 participants completed a questionnaire con-structed on the results of the interview study producing quantitative data. Relevant input, pro-cess and output variables could be identified and were integrated into five user profiles: 1) sensi-tisation, 2) cognitive application, 3) activation, 4) behavioral application, and 5) potentialisation. These profiles were finally arranged in relation to knowledge transfer and behavioral transfer, thus yielding a transfer model of intercultural qualification, and were put in ascending order in an input-process-output model. This theoretically founded and empirically tested model de-scribes exemplarily preconditions, learning processes, learning outcomes, and control variables of intercultural qualification in the context of academic education in Germany. It can be used as a theoretical framework for further research or conceptualisation, implementation, and evalua-tion of intercultural qualification programs.

Analyses on tech-enhanced and anonymous Peer Discussion as well as anonymous Control Facilities for tech-enhanced Learning / Analysen zur technologieunterstützten und anonymem Peer Discussion sowie anonymen Einflusswerkzeuge für technologieunterstütztes Lernen

Hara, Tenshi 12 September 2016 (has links) (PDF)
An increasing number of university freshmen has been observable in absolute number as well as percentage of population over the last decade. However, at the same time the drop-out rate has increased significantly. While a drop in attendance could be observed at the same time, statistics show that young professionals consider only roughly thirty percent of their qualification to originate in their university education. Taking this into consideration with the before mentioned, one conclusion could be that students fail to see the importance of fundamental classes and choose to seek knowledge elsewhere, for example in free online courses. However, the so acquired knowledge is a non-attributable qualification. One solution to this problem must be to make on-site activities more attractive. A promising approach for raised attractiveness would be to support students in self-regulated learning processes, making them experience importance and value of own decisions based on realistic self-assessment and self-evaluation. At the same time, strict ex-cathedra teaching should be replaced by interactive forms of education, ideally activating on a meta-cognitive level. Particularly, as many students bring mobile communication devices into classes, this promising approach could be extended by utilising these mobile devices as second screens. That way, enhanced learning experiences can be provided. The basic idea is simple, namely to contribute to psychological concepts with the means of computer science. An example for this idea are audience response systems. There has been numerous research into these and related approaches for university readings, but other forms of education have not been sufficiently considered, for example tutorials. This technological aspect can be combined with recent didactics research and concepts like peer instruction or visible learning. Therefore, this dissertation presents an experimental approach at providing existing IT solutions for on-site tutorials, specifically tools for audience responses, evaluations, learning demand assessments, peer discussion, and virtual interactive whiteboards. These tools are provided under observation of anonymity and cognisant incidental utilisation. They provide insight into students\' motivation to attend classes, their motivation to utilise tools, and into their tool utilisation itself. Experimental findings are combined into an extensible system concept consisting of three major tool classes: anonymous peer discussion means, anonymous control facilities, and learning demand assessment. With the exception of the latter, promising findings in context of tutorials are presented, for example the reduction of audience response systems to an emergency brake, the versatility of (peer) discussion systems, or a demand for retroactive deanonymisation of contributions. The overall positive impact of tool utilisation on motivation to attend and perceived value of tutorials is discussed and supplemented by a positive impact on the final exams\' outcomes.

The role of school-based teacher incentives to improve student achievement : experiences from selected secondary schools in Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe

Chakandinakira, Joseph 07 1900 (has links)
This study explored the role of school-based teacher financial incentives on student academic achievement. Despite great efforts made by Zimbabwean government towards improving the education system in terms of infrastructure development and increasing number of schools, prior and after 1980, not much attention had been paid to the role of teachers’ extra-financial incentives on enhancing teacher motivation which leads to student achievement in and outside classroom situation. Extra-financial incentives differ from government to government depending on the revenue base and political will by such governments to support these teacher incentives programmes. In developed countries, respective governments pay different teacher incentives while in developing countries, parents/guardians or School Development Committees (SDCs) shoulder the burden. This study contented that one of the ways to improve student achievement has been payment of school-based teacher incentives to supplement teachers’ low salaries. While the need to adequately compensate teachers had been a worldwide phenomenon, this is in contrast to Zimbabwean experience after 2014, when Government of National Unity (GNU) came to an end. Zimbabwean government banned payment of teacher incentives under unclear reasons which were widely purported to be political. This research adopted a qualitative approach and as such, collection of primary and secondary data were done using multiple data collection techniques. Techniques included interviews with key informants, focus group discussions and open ended questionnaires in selected secondary schools. Results from this study revealed that improving teacher motivation through school-based incentives had been central to improved student achievement. In schools where teacher incentive system was practiced pass-rates increased, with a sudden decline when teacher incentives were banned. Banning or lack of properly designed incentive systems, where teachers were consulted, was seen as negatively affecting student achievement in selected secondary schools of Makoni District. / Educational Foundations / D. The teaching and learning challenges of teenage mother learners at secondary schools in Vhembe, Limpopo

Lethole, Tshiwela Maria 20 July 2020 (has links)
Abstract in English, Venda and Sotho / Within the last decade, the level of teenage pregnancy in Southern Africa has been on the increase and as a result, is being seen as a major social problem. This study, which is a dissertation of limited scope, investigates the teaching and learning challenges of teenage mother learners at secondary schools in the Vhembe District in Limpopo. This study is classified as qualitative research within a case study design. A convenience sampling method was applied in order to select teachers and teenage mother learners for participation in the study resulting in five teachers and five teenage mother learners participating in the study Participants were interviewed using in-depth interviews. Participant observation and document analysis were other research methodologies included in the data collection process. Participant observation assisted in gathering data in relation to how mother learners interacted with teachers and other peers in class and in the school environment and document analysis was conducted by means of perusing formal records, such as attendance registers, class tests and examination results, medical records, and involvement in extramural activities. Qualitative data analysis was used in order to analyse data collected which resulted in themes and sub-themes emerging. The findings revealed that teenage pregnancy has a detrimental effect on girls’ schooling with school attendance and absenteeism affecting performance resulting in poor results and even drop out. Additional factors such as lack of financial support, physical and emotional support from family and friends as well as stigmatisation, discrimination and exclusion have a negative effect on learning. Teachers tend to lack the necessary knowledge and skills in dealing with teenage mother learners and are not supported with counselling programmes. Recommendations suggest that teachers are equipped with special skills to deal with teenage mother learners and that learners at school are made more aware of the dangers of early pregnancy and its effects on their education through various programmes. / Ngudo iyi, ya desithesheni ya tshikoupu tsho pimiwaho, i khou ṱoḓisisa nga ha khaedu dza u funza na u guda kha vhagudi vha vhana vha re vho mme zwikoloni zwa sekondari Masipalani wa Tshiṱiriki tsha Vhembe, Limpopo.
