Structural design and performance of tube mega frame in arch-shaped high-rise buildings

Sakne, Matiss January 2017 (has links)
A recent development and innovation in elevator technologies have sprawled interest in how these technologies would affect the forms and shapes of future high-rise buildings. The elevator that uses linear motors instead of ropes and can thus travel horizontally and on inclines is of particular interest. Once the vertical cores are no longer needed for the elevators, new and radical building forms and shapes are anticipated. It is expected that the buildings will have bridges and/or the buildings themselves will structurally perform more like bridges than buildings, therefore this study addresses the following topic - structural design and performance of tube mega frame in arch-shaped high-rise buildings. Evidently, for a structure of an arched shape, the conventional structural system used in high-rise buildings does not address the structural challenges. On the other hand, The Tubed Mega Frame system developed by Tyréns is designed to support a structural system for high-rise building without the central core, in which the purpose is to transfer all the loads to the ground via the perimeter of the building, making the structure more stable by maximizing the lever arm for the structure. The system has not yet been realized nor tested in realistic circumstances. This thesis aims at evaluating the efficiency of the Tubed Mega Frame system in arched shaped tall buildings. Multiple shapes and type of arches are evaluated to find the best possible selection. Structural behavior of different arch structures is studied using analytical tools and also finite element method in software SAP2000. The most efficient arch shape is sought to distribute the self-weight of the structure. The analysis shows that it is possible to accurately determine efficient arch shape based on a specific load distribution. Furthermore, continuing with the arch shape found in previous steps, a 3D finite element model is built and analyzed for linear static, geometric non-linearity (P-Delta) and linear dynamic cases in the ETABS software. For the given scope, the results of the analysis show that the Tubed Mega Frame structural system is potentially feasible and has relatively high lateral stiffness in the plane of the arch, while the out-of-plane lateral stiffness is comparatively smaller. For the service limit state, the maximum story drift ratio is within the limitation of 1/400 for in-plane deformations, while for out-of-plane the comfort criteria limit is exceeded.

Energy analysis for sustainable mega-cities

Phdungsilp, Aumnad January 2006 (has links)
ABSTRACT Cities throughout Asia have experienced unprecedented economic development over the past decades. In many cases this has contributed to their rapid and uncontrolled growth, which has resulted in a multiplicity of problems, including rapid population increase, enhanced environmental pollution, collapsing traffic systems, dysfunctional waste management, and rapid increases in the consumption of energy, water and other resources. The significant energy use in cities is not very well perceived in Asian countries. Although a number of studies into energy consumption across various sectors have been conducted, most are from the national point of view. Energy demand analysis is not considered important at the level of the city. The thesis is focused on the dynamics of energy utilization in Asian mega-cities, and ultimately aims at providing strategies for maximizing the use of renewable energy in large urban systems. The study aims at providing an in-depth understanding of the complex dynamics of energy utilization in urban mega-centers. An initial general analysis is complemented by a detailed study of the current situation and future outlook for the city of Bangkok, Thailand. An integrated approach applied to the study includes identification of the parameters that affect the utilization of energy in mega-cities and a detailed analysis of energy flows and their various subsystems, including commercial, industrial, residential and that of transportation. The study investigates and evaluates the energy models most commonly used for analyzing and simulating energy utilization. Its purpose is to provide a user-friendly tool suitable for decision-makers in developing an energy model for large cities. In addition, a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) process has been developed to assess whether or not the energy systems meet the sustainability criteria. A metabolic approach has been employed to analyze the energy flow and utilization in selected Asian mega-cities, including Bangkok, Beijing, Shanghai, and Tokyo. The approach is applied to measure the majority of indirect energy flows or the energy embodied in the flows of goods and services involving the residents of those cities. Since the function of cities is to serve the lives of the residents, indirect energy consumption could be regarded as being of equal importance as that of direct energy use. The essence of embodied energy is that an indirect reflection upon behavior following direct energy consumption. It can illustrate how a city relies on the outside, for example other cities, countries, etc. and provides some interesting information that cannot be easily drawn from the direct energy demand. The study reveals that the indirect energy demand is more significant than the direct energy demand in Bangkok, Shanghai, and Tokyo, while direct energy demand is greater than the indirect energy demand in Beijing. This can be explained by the fact that Bangkok, Shanghai, and Tokyo have a greater reliance upon the outside in terms of energy demand. The Long-range Energy Alternative Planning (LEAP) system has been selected to perform Bangkok energy modeling. In a Bangkok case study a range of policy interventions are selected and how these would change the energy development in Bangkok by the year 2025 is examined. Different policies can be grouped by the sectors analyzed. The only supply-side policy considered meets an existing target of having 10% of electricity generated from renewable sources. The study period for the model started in 2005 and ends in 2025, with the year 2000 taken as the base year. The proposed scenarios were evaluated using the MCDM approach to rate their sustainability. Team members found that this method provided a methodology to help decision-makers to systematically identify management objectives and priorities. / QC 20101123

Accumulation by Dispossession through Sports Mega-Events: The case of Vila Autódromo and the creation of the Rio 2016 Olympic Park

Olofsson, Kristoffer, Peiteado Fernández, Vítor January 2014 (has links)
The theoretical framework of accumulation by dispossession allows for a critical examination of urban development projects within neoliberalism (Harvey, 2009; Swyngedouw, Moulaert & Rodriguez, 2002). Within the same neoliberal paradigm, sports mega-events have come to play a significant role for urban regeneration and policy-making (Hall, 2006). Meanwhile attending to the well-documented cases of mass-evictions and reduction of standard housing rights as a recurrent consequence of cities hosting such events (Blunden, 2012), we believe that such a critical examination is arguably important in order to do justice to these kinds of urban regeneration projects. In this paper we analyse, by a case study approach, how mega-events amplify and accelerate the process of accumulation by dispossession. We attend to the development of the Olympic Park and Olympic Village, Barra da Tijuca, in preparation for the Rio 2016 Games, as well as the neighbouring community of Vila Autódromo. By analysing different types of source material, we discuss how the mechanisms of privatisation and entrepreneurialism are reflected in our case; understood as two important mechanisms that facilitate the process of accumulation by dispossession (Harvey, 2009).

Imagineering Place : The Branding of Five Chinese Mega-Cities

Björner, Emma January 2017 (has links)
Cities, regions, nations and other places have in recent decades become active participants in the global competitive economy, and now operate in a global marketplace, competing with other places all over the world for investors, tourists, residents and workforce. As a result, places use marketing and branding strategies and practices to gain reputation and competitive advantage. Chinese cities have, over the past decades, increasingly engaged in branding activities, and even taken the role of spearheads for China in its positioning in the global economy, seen for example in the organization of mega-events. The branding of Chinese cities nevertheless exhibits some differences compared with city branding in the West. The aim of this dissertation is to contribute to our knowledge of the internal-political aspects of place branding, using field studies of the imagery used in city branding practices in five Chinese mega-cities, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Chongqing. The focus is on the images and language used in the cities’ branding, and on key political aspects involved in the branding of Chinese mega-cities. The theoretical lens incorporates concepts tied to images, language, imaginaries, ideology and power, and the study relies on an ethnographic, multiple case study approach, including longitudinal fieldwork in China. The findings consist of rich illustrations of the branding of the five Chinese mega-cities, and include an analysis of similar imagery found in all five cities, grouped into economic, international, cultural, social and environmental imaginaries. This shows that city branding in Chinese mega-cities is focused on creating international and competitive cities, while also paying attention to the environment, culture and internal target groups such as residents. A central contribution of this dissertation is the development of the concept ‘imagineering’, used in this study to conceptualize key political aspects of city branding in Chinese mega-cities. Imagineering contains three main elements, namely local adaptations of national directives, policies, plans and concepts; a strong future orientation while also accentuating selected elements from the past; and a focus on local populations with the creation of stability and harmony as a central goal. Imagineering is also conceptualized as a policy instrument exercised by a powerful élite, closely intertwined with urban governance, and used to influence people, values, places and, ultimately, city futures.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Rodrigo da Silva Paiva.pdf: 3674625 bytes, checksum: ba1a5b70a82ed782636e73b452a7d480 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-03-23 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In Brazil, the public policies of sports and leisure have been targeted, since the realization of the Pan American Games of 2007, by the explicit goal of designing internationally the country in political and economic areas. The country hosted, in the range of a decade, the biggest sporting events of the Earth: Military games (2011), Confederations Cup (2013), F.I.F.A. World Cup (2014), America’s Cup (2015) and Olympic Games (2016). The argument adopted by the managers of the different sublevels of government, explained in application documents of the Ministry of Sports, to legitimize the assumption of an agenda too committed to sports, was that the social legacy of sporting mega events would a modernization of infrastructure, upgrading of services, social mobilization, economic decentralization, stimulation to the many forms of innovation, commitment to the environment and sustainability, improvement of transparency in public management and dissemination of sports. Taking this last aspect as main reference, the objective of this study is to verify whether, and to what extent, the twelve host cities in Brazil that received the F.I.F.A. World Cup planned programs of democratization as the legacy sports mega event. For the study, were collected, analyzed and discussed the data gathered between 2012-2016 in a national project, World Cup cities, of note, proposing and monitoring of documents prepared for the legacy of the World Cup, from carrying out a program led by a sports institution of the third-sector, financed with public money and made possible through tax waiver for the private sector, through the law of Incentive to the sport. Meetings were held with all the sports Secretaries of host cities and other sectors of society. Compare arrays of responsibilities and the legacy plans produced in Cities. The detailed analysis of a set of indicators agreed by public managers, of the host cities, related to the sporting legacy, namely, investment in infrastructure, professional training for the universalization of access to sports, resizing of policies to encourage the social sport to the detriment of the elite sport and performance and development of programs of universalizing access to sport in the school environment, showed that no host city of FIFA World Cup designed any effective actions for the sporting legacy. The Developed action plans did not guarantee the representation of diverse interests of leather sports actors of each locale. Sports managers in multiple sublevels of Government have shown little or no commitment to the sporting legacy. The elaborate plans even became part of the political agenda of sports of host cities. The World Cup Cities Project, with obsolete results, could never have been accomplished and, If the investments that consumed were directed to the direct care of children and young people in long-term sports programs would decrease the contradiction as fallacious speech sporting legacy of the mega event and the implementation of public policies for universalization of access to sports / No Brasil, as políticas públicas de esportes e lazer tem sido orientadas, desde a realização dos jogos Pan-americanos de 2007, pelo objetivo explícito de projetar internacionalmente o país, nos âmbitos, político e econômico.

The purpose of the present study is to demonstrate that the issue of internal displacements is featured in Brazil as a consequence of forced remotions that go through violations of the human rights of housing and the city, during the process of preparation and execution of sports mega-events, in reason of the developing model addopted by the brazilian State, flagrantly marked by coloniality of power. From that, the research intends to analyze the current displaying of internal displacements around the world, the causes and the main human rights' s violations that occur in this context, as well as the main protection and assistence manifestations adressed to them. Furthermore, it intends to analyze in which measurement the institutions and the modern State features are determined by a colonial matrix of power, therefore allowing a model of progress and development that deepens unequality, conceals identities and silences conflicts. By this notion, we shall verify that this modern/capitalist/colonial model of development adopted by Brazil has got as consequece a pattern of discriminatory, excludent and opressive city modernization process and urban planning, enhanced by the scope of the preparation of major cities of the country for the accomplishment of sports mega-events, specially through compulsory evictions and the violation of the housing right. Besides the verification of traditional causes of forced internal displacements, the need of casting the affected by forced removals such as internally displaced broadens possibilities of legal protection and also collective, subjective and institutional awareness about this matter that, among others, was unveiled by the processes of preparation for the mega-events' execution in Brazil. Based on the theoretical framework of decolonial thought, analyzes the coloniality of power within the category of human rights violations identified in the context of mega-events, from the developmental logic in which these violations are legitimized. Through bibliographic, documental and non-participant observation analysis on who is directly and indirectly involved in the tensions of the process of mega events preparation, specially in the Porto Alegre town, we intend to reveal more precisely the reality faced in this harvest, as well as to identify the theoretical fundamentals which explain them, in order to concretize a strategic knowledge of human rights so it shall not be confined to social speech, but that it deepens in causes and increases arguments to act and generate critical dispositions and antagonists facing the structure or hegemonic social order.

Campos, Anderson Gurgel 18 March 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-26T18:14:02Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Anderson Gurgel Campos.pdf: 43705251 bytes, checksum: 51d374f654897ba8ea7c112b3b1d3c21 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-03-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This research investigates the management of spectacular images of the sport in mega events. The top-level modern sport, the basis of mega sports events, is a source of a complex system of production and image reproduction and social symbols, and of economized images this is, with the accumulation of values and meanings and it is also a bridge between those agents of these types of activities and their audiences, which ultimately reverts to capital and image. This issue becomes more relevant due to the fact that Brazil will host both World Cup in 2014 and Olympics in 2016. The main hypothesis of this doctoral research is that the images that circulate in these sports mega events are organized not in relation to their body related this is, athletes, local or competition but with other images, creating an imagery show that is constructed from an economic principle. This research, which aims to analyze the sport mega-events as media environments, allows us to show that there is an economy, an operating principle between play, sport and mega-events, from images. The reference here is the Greek concept of oikonomia and its derivations in economic theology, which support the idea of an economy of the image, which binds to the organization and management of pictorial resources in the relationship between the man and his imaginary. The objective is to investigate the construction of media environments and test the validity of speaking in the existence of an economy of image of the sport, responsible for the transformation of sports mega-events and their agents in goods of the consumer society. In the concept of game and sport the references are Huizinga and Caillois. For sport, the references are Bourdieu, from the concept of communication in sport, and Wulf and Gabauer on mimesis in the sports game. For concepts of image, event and apparatus, the ideas of Flusser are also crucial. And finally, from Agamben, Mondzain and Polanyi, the concept of economy of images is supported, which allows, in dialogue with the theory of the spectacle, Debord and Iconofagia by Baitello Jr., we can understand the essence of sports consumption in contemporary society / Esta pesquisa investiga a gestão das imagens espetaculares do esporte nos megaeventos.

Tsai, Yi Chien Unknown Date (has links)
As a consequence of globalization, the marketing of region has grown in importance as countries, regions compete with one another to attract investment and visitors. To compete effectively, it is essential to identify the critical success factors of image branding and ensure those who are into the strategic planning. City's image branding is largely dependent on the construction, communication and management as well as the style of the city. A city's brand image provides, on one hand, the basis for developing city marketing to pursue economic development and, on the other hand, provides as a conduit for people outside the country. This study examines the effectiveness of the efforts on the image branding of Taipei based on an analysis of image branding strategies through the participation of mega events. The theoretical background from literary reviews of this study covering city marketing, city branding and image, mega events and event marketing topics, which are the conceptual but technical and structural viewpoints included. The primary city brand-driven mega events indicators would be developed by reorganizing these past researches and by dividing them into five aspects: organizational, environmental, target market, marketing, and strategies. All primary indicators are evaluated by 10 marketing, communication, media, and administrative experts to evaluate which have the most criteria toward the image branding of Taipei, and how these factors could be utilized to form the strategic framework. Based on the survey of the modified Delphi method, the result indicated that the most crucial success factor of the image branding of Taipei is organization leadership, which refer to the city governing philosophy of decision-making, strategic planning, and implementation represention the core building block of image branding. This survey points out that the convenient transportation network, unique city style and applied communication channel, such as social media, are also drawing a line determining the effect of the image branding of Taipei. Accordingly, some recommendations can be made for the use of the image branding of Taipei: diversified cultural driven assets can be attractive points; Fesvital and activities also can be applied; new style of promotiation channel such as social media can also be developed. Those are based on a combination and the components of the city's brand management.
