Urbanismo bottom-up: sociedade em rede e processos de urbanização emergentes / Bottom-up urbanism: network society and emerging urbanization processes.

José Eduardo Calijuri Hamra 27 April 2018 (has links)
This research analyzes the processes of bottom-up urbanism from the social context in which they emerged and from their presence in digital media. As context, are analyzed the contemporary social movements, the consolidation of the network society through the popularization of ICTs and the emergence of new organizational cultures. The historical analysis of this universe is always linked to its impact on the production process of cities. About the presence in the digital media the research investigates through the data mining and analysis of networks, the action in Facebook, from a case study. The investigations reveal the dynamics of the main actors, such as the number and frequency of events, engagement with the public, dialogues in virtual space and actions of urban transformation. As a result, the research does not intend to present precise conclusions and defi nitions of concepts, but notes that allow a better understanding and planning of contemporary urbanism.

Empresa, sociedade e comunicação: debates e tendências na transição pós-moderna / Business, Society and Communication: debates and trends in the context of postmodern transition.

Rafael Luis Pompeia Gioielli 30 March 2012 (has links)
As the century XXI progresses, contemporary society gradually pass through important socio-cultural transformations which farther them from the context of modern-industrial society. Among other consequences of the postmodern transition, the relationship between business, society and communication transforms itself. One dimension of this phenomenon is the emergence of a specific model of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), named in this research as the interactive-dynamic model of CSR. Based on a political approach, this model provides a permanent process of negotiation through which mutual responsibilities between business and society are defined in a dynamic way. At the same time, the spread of new communication technologies and networks enables the emergence of an informal system of control over the corporations that operate in the public media sphere by political mobilization of civil society. This emerging system we named as extrainstitucional corporate governance. Regarding these two emerging processes, practice of corporate communication faces challenges that point to the limits of its original functionalist paradigm. Because of this, the author suggests the need of a new paradigm for the corporate communication capable of recognize itself no longer as a management tool, but as a social process of meaning construction. In order to identify whether and how the context of socio-cultural transition is understood by the market and what is its possible impact on business communication practices, a survey was conducted and data was collected in eleven in-depth interviews with communication chief officers of major companies operating in Brazil. The aim of thus survey was to synthesize a grounded theory capable of dealing with the conceptual propositions described above. The conclusions of this work seek to compare empirical and theoretical findings, analyzing challenges and contributions of corporate communication in the new context of the business-society relationship.

Remanufactory - the typological inheritance of industrial architecture in the age of digital consumption

Filipe, Claudia 27 June 2013 (has links)
The dissertation investigates the design of an electronic-waste material recovery facility in the north western precinct of the inner city of Tshwane. It aims to explore the re-configuration of the industrial typology within a contemporary network society, and make apparent it’s changing role and form, influenced by a globalized industrial paradigm that is increasingly decentralized, immaterial and knowledge intensive. It suggests a hybridity of type and process, where value in terms of the local and the material is investigated as an expression of the new industrial ethos of innovation, information access, collaboration and transparency. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria 2013 / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Forskning på agendan

Berglund, Amanda, Langer, Kajsa January 2018 (has links)
Background and objective of study: In a contemporary era of a progressive mediadevelopment, an increasing number of people are accessing information through social mediaand therefore its interesting, from both a societal and media perspective, to study how research communication is changing, and in what way the science outreach is adapting to this new media landscape. The purpose of this study was thus to investigate how research communicators and researchers make research visible externally through social media. Methods: The study was conducted using semi-structured qualitative interviews with 12respondents, four communicators and eight researchers from Malmö University. Results: The study's findings show that researchers' and research communicators' basic beliefs in the dissemination of research to the surrounding community consist of two parts; tocommunicate research to relevant groups and to make researchers and research visible in thepublic debate. In the process of reaching the statement goals, two prominent strategies have been identified. Social media is used as a tool for networking and building relationships with defined primary target groups and is used to highlight research and provide media space in the traditional news media and thus reach out to the surrounding community with scientific research. The result also shows that research communication through social media is surrounded by different personal and organizational incentives. Finally, the result shows that social media is considered of particular importance to make formal scientific publications visible to a broader audience. Social media are thus used as a complement and as part of other research communication activities.

Authoritarian, far-right responses to the Covid-19 pandemic: an analysis of QAnon’s crisis narratives

Efthymiadou, Panagiota, Miteva, Anelia January 2021 (has links)
The coronavirus pandemic has changed the lives of individuals all over the world. The goal of this research is to investigate and understand the narratives and underlying messages of the QAnon movement concerning COVID-19. The theoretical basis for this analysis is that of uncertainty-identity theory and extremism to study the process by which people embrace these types of movements and their values. Also, to examine the spread of QAnons’ messages and conspiracy theories on digital media, network society theory is used. In order to carry out this research, we conducted qualitative content analysis on data gathered directly from QAnon sources. According to the results of the study, the movement proceeded to create crisis narratives that tap into social anxieties and political uncertainty. Accordingly, the pandemic was used for the movement to grow, gain new momentum and supporters, and even merge other conspiracy theories making the narratives more elaborate.

Discerning an African missional ecclesiology in dialogue with two uniting youth movements

Nel, Reginald Wilfred 02 1900 (has links)
Churches are confronted with the reality of younger, mobile generations challenging existing understandings of church and witness. They seem to live according to a different (postcolonial) script. This study probes the question as to how these churches are to understand and respond meaningfully, but also missiologically, to these transformations. Coming as a missiologist from a particular ecclesiological, theological, cultural background, I had two rationales for this study, namely to review the current theories we have about church and mission, i.e., missiological ecclesiology, and in order to do this, we need to craft a sensitive and creative dialogue, in the form of a missiological methodology with younger people. I address these rationales, guided by a research question: How can I design a creative dialogue with younger generations, to pick up the impulses, in order to discern a Southern African missional ecclesiology. Working with the metaphor of ―remixing‖, this discernment process started off where I engaged my own embeddedness. These were the older ―samples‖ to work with, in order to produce something new and in tune with the sensibilities, the ―soul‖ of newer communities. I then attempt to understand the current social transformations that younger generations are responding to. Through this, I want to design a methodology for a creative dialogue with these youth movements on the basis of an intersubjective epistemology. Using this methodology, I could develop a thick description from the dialogue with the two uniting youth movements. Lastly, I present the engagement (remixing) between these rich new impulses with the old (the existing), in carving out an appropriate missional ecclesiology for the audiences I‘ve been with. Starting with an outdated and colonial gereformeerde missionary ecclesiology, but then also the anti-colonial ecclesiologies and a postmodern (predominantly Western) emerging missionary ecclesiology, I discern a particular postcolonial African ecclesiology, which I call a Southern African missional ecclesiology. Instead of exclusion, I propose remixing church in terms of five dimensions as social network, spiritual home, mobile community, movement in the Holy Spirit and as story. These can serve as a map to guide Southern African congregations in their dialogue with younger generations. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / D. Th. (Missiology)

Do estado virtual ao estado penal: transformações no estado de bem estar social na era da informação / From Virtual State to the Penal State: transformations in the Welfare State in the Information Age

Santos, Marcelo Bidóia dos 20 November 2017 (has links)
This work aimed to analyze the transformations related to the welfare sector of national states, responsible for social and economic rights, inserted in the Information Age. In order to do so, it was made a historical survey of the political-philosophical reasons that gave rise to the construction of the Social State, from its beginnings until its consolidation as a foundation of citizenship inherent to the Democratic Rule of Law, at which point the content of this state model was analyzed for the formulation of a concept that provided a better understanding of the object. Later, with Manuel Castells as a theoretical framework, the efforts focused on a broad analysis of the political, economic and cultural transformations that occurred since the Third Industrial Revolution started with the advent of new information and communication technologies, and which created the networked society. In this context, it was found that the contemporary nation-states go through a crisis, in which part of their sovereignty is shaken (mainly their economic autonomy) by the power of the networks flows - it\'s the state dysphonia process - leading them to the condition of a Virtual State, a stage in which the State must choose a path to be followed (update), which will result in major changes to its welfare sector. At the end, it was analyzed the consequences of an update turned to the dismantlement of the welfare state, up from the studies from Loïc Wacquant about the United States of America, a place considered at the same time as the cradle of the informational revolution and of the retraction policies of the Welfare State, whose delineations ended in the construction of another paradigm: the Penal State, characterized by the punishment of the poor, abandoned by the retreat of the Welfare State and embraced by the punitive network, in which the typical technologies of the information age take on a new purpose - the functions of discipline and punish.

Shaping school culture to transform education : an ethnographic study of New Technology high schools

Denton-Calabrese, Tracey January 2016 (has links)
There have been numerous calls for the radical transformation of public education in the United States. Reform initiatives are fuelled by the need to prepare students to meet the challenges of the networked knowledge society. This thesis examines the shaping of school culture within two public non-charter high schools, in different regions of the United States and with different socioeconomic characteristics, that are implementing the "New Technology" (or "New Tech") model of education: Pacific Coast High, a well-established New Tech school, and Midwest High, a school that recently transitioned to the model and is still in the process of culture change. This rapidly expanding school reform network includes 168 schools in the United States and 7 international sites in Australia. The New Tech Network, the organisation that provides training and support for these schools, explicitly emphasises the goal of changing the culture of education. They describe themselves as a network of schools that promotes a culture of trust, respect, and responsibility and uses project-based learning and "smart use" of technology to redefine teaching and learning. I employed an ethnographic multisite case study design to gain an understanding of the everyday experiences and practices of teachers, students and school leaders as they work through the process of implementing and maintaining the New Tech model. Fieldwork included six and a half months of participant observation of secondary classrooms, school meetings, professional development sessions, and New Tech training conferences as well as semi-structured interviews with teachers, students, and administrators. My analysis provides an understanding of the influence of local context, including historical background (local and national) and economic and political structures. The research findings indicate that a deliberate focus on 'culture-building', with particular values like trust, respect and responsibility, underpin and shape relationships, behaviours and educational practices, including the extensive use of ICTs. A multi-faceted approach to socialisation and enculturation, which includes extensive peer-to-peer support, is involved in inculcating values and shaping behaviours and practices. The New Tech model shifts the focus of education from a primarily individualist competitive endeavour (reflecting the broad cultural orientations of modern society in the United States) to a more collectivist approach, with students working in collaborative groups supported by the use of ICTs. Schools operate as learning communities with collaborative partnerships with the wider community. Pacific Coast High is an exemplar for the model in its fully implemented form, while Midwest High's transition to the model has been fraught with tensions as they navigate numerous context-specific challenges. I argue that real reform requires an intentional effort to change the culture of education and that pedagogy and culture have to necessitate the use of ICTs to more fully integrate them into the education process. I characterise the culture I observed in New Tech schools, particularly at Pacific Coast, as an 'ICT-facilitating school culture' with (1) a collaborative project-based focus and encouragement of students to communicate and find information themselves which pushes them to use ICTs, (2) a system of cultural values that, when internalised, operates as a means of social control, keeping students on task as they work independently and collaboratively, using ICTs, including social networking sites, and (3) an ideal classroom layout and technology infrastructure that facilitates the use of ICTs. I characterise the New Tech Network of schools as a revitalization movement, addressing the needs of a changing society by changing the culture of education.

-The conflict between reason and emotion : An ethnographically-inspired study of four student’s everyday lives online and offline

Saller, Nathalie January 2015 (has links)
Purpose: The aim of this thesis has been to study and obtain greater understanding of the consequences of active social media use. Specifically, in terms of social identity, social life and the sense of belonging. Secondly, the thesis studies the consequences of disconnecting and for a limited amount of time opt out of the social media context. Method/material:  The study is based on an explorative, cultural ethnographically-inspired method, in which four respondents were studied: two men and two women, all frequent users of social media. This was done in three steps: initial interviews, followed by social media diaries and finally a focus group. By allowing these methods to complement each other, the goal was to create an overall picture of the importance of social media in their everyday lives. The study's focus lies on the week in which the respondents kept social media diaries. This was done with an application designed to continuously provide me updates during the week. The first three days of the week, the respondents used the social media as usual. Every time they were active on social media, the task was to update the diary with the activity, as well as motivation, emotion, simultaneous offline activity and possible reflections. The last four days of the weak, the respondents were prohibited from using social media, and instead they updated the diaries every time they had an impulse to use social media. Main results: The study shows that social media plays a big role in shaping the self as well as the social identity. The respondents feel a social requirement to be constantly available, which stresses them and affects offline-activities and how they socialize in real life. The days without social media meant great relief in many ways; they began to read books, socialized more concentrated with friends and family and were able to relax more. Despite these surprising insights, they want to continue using social media since being disconnected was also very stressful since they often had the feeling of being excluded and left out. The conflict between reason and emotion arises. Sense dictates that they should cut down on their social media activity but the feeling tells them the opposite.
