WHITE NOISE: ONLINE DISINFORMATION AS POLITICAL DOMINANCE

Samantha L Seybold (16521846) 10 July 2023 (has links)

We cannot fully assess the normative and epistemic implications of online discourse, especially political discourse, without recognizing how it is being systematically leveraged to undermine the credibility and autonomy of those with marginalized identities. In the following chapters, I supplement social/feminist epistemological methodologies with norm theory to argue that online discourse entrenches the mechanisms of political dominance and cultural hegemony by ignoring and devaluing the experiences and struggles of marginalized individuals. Each chapter investigates a different, concrete manifestation of this dynamic. In Chapter 1, I argue that digital capitalist enterprises like Facebook facilitate the targeting of minoritized users with disproportionate instances of abuse, misinformation, and silencing. This is exemplified by the practice of using racial microtargeting to engage in Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) voter suppression. I contend in Chapter 2 that, given the exploitative nature of racially-microtargeted political advertising campaigns, these social media companies are ultimately morally responsible for initiating and sustaining a burgeoning digital voter suppression industry. In Chapter 3, I argue that the presence of online disinformation, in tandem with key party figures’ explicit endorsement of vicious group epistemic norms like close-mindedness and dogmatism, have directly contributed to the formation and epistemic isolation of conservative political factions in the US. Finally, I argue in Chapter 4 that social media and hostile media bias rhetoric directly reinforce sexist and racist credibility norms, effectively creating a toxic environment of misogynistic online discourse that hurts the perceived credibility of women journalists.

Dufour, Caroline 06 1900 (has links)
The political science literature on climate change identifies public opinion polarisation as significantly contributing to policy inaction on the climate issue. Understanding the extent of this polarization and the axes along which it occurs is an essential first step in addressing it. This paper seeks to describe how the polarization of public opinion in Canada around climate change has evolved over the past decade. The literature review identifies three main axes of polarization on the climate issue in Canada: support for a political party, political ideology and region. The data used is drawn from a series of surveys conducted annually between 2011 and 2021 across Canada by Professor Erick Lachapelle. Three measures of opinion on the climate issue are used to observe polarization: belief in climate change and its anthropogenic causes, threat perception and support for a carbon tax. The analysis of the results combines descriptive analyses and multivariate linear regressions. These analyses show a mainly partisan and ideological polarization, but also a regional polarization, which pits the oil-producing provinces against the rest of Canada. Public opinion has become increasingly polarized over the past decade, but mainly around the carbon tax debate. Moreover, partisan polarization was particularly pronounced when climate change is salient in the political debate during the 2015 and 2019 federal elections.

Tea Time: A Comparative Analysis of the Tea Party Caucus and House Republican Conference in the One Hundred Twelfth Congress

Phillips, Stephen 01 January 2014 (has links)
Following the historic election of Barack Obama, the largest overhaul of the nation's health care system since the Great Society, and with the country still reeling from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, a group of disenchanted conservative Republicans and elected leaders wary of government policy gave rise to a new political movement - the Tea Party. Since taking the American political system by storm in 2010, considerable research has focused on the electoral consequences of the Tea Party. Using an original dataset and the American National Election Study, I study the Tea Party Caucus at the elite level by analyzing roll call votes, incumbency, and endorsements, and at the mass level through an examination of congressional districts and constituencies. Findings show that members of the Tea Party Caucus and their Republican House colleagues are largely homogeneous. Exceptions to this include economic final passage votes, legislation receiving presidential support, district lean, census region, and presidential vote in congressional districts. Furthermore, evidence is seen that economic factors in members' districts affected the election of freshmen representatives in 2010, and that district variables strongly influence legislative voting behavior. Finally, discontinuity is discovered between the Tea Party movement at the mass level and the Tea Party Caucus at the elite level.

Framing taiwan television news: a content analysis of protest news

Unknown Date (has links)
This study examines how Taiwan television news frames protest news by investigating the prevalence of 5 news frames identified in earlier studies on faming and framing effects: frames of attribution of responsibility, conflict, human interest, economic consequences, and morality. This study content analyzed 206 television news stories in the protest against president Ma Ying-jeou’s 100th day in office in August 30th, 2008. The results showed that, overall, the human interest frame was most commonly used in the television news, respectively followed by the attribution of responsibility, conflict, economic consequences, and morality. It also appeared that sensational presentation as popular outlets in Taiwan’s television news. The use of news frames not only was differenced from channels, but also in partisan stances taken by various channels.

Álamo Pons, Óscar del 27 December 2006 (has links)
This research analyzes the indigenous organization process in center-andean countries (Bolivia, Ecuador, Perú) and reveals those factors which cause indigenous movements (in Bolivia and Ecuador) and those ones which impede this phenomenon in Perú - although these countries have common trends in economical, political and historical spheres - with special attention to the political dynamic of ethnic identities during the last three decades. Also these pages detail the impact of the indigenous movements in: political systems and their performance in electoral arena; democratization processes and the challenges that these movements put into them and over state reform initiatives.
