All-Fiber Sensing Techniques For Structural Health Monitoring And Other Applications

Madhav, Kalaga Venu 09 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, we explore the four aspects of fiber Bragg grating sensors: mathematical modeling of Fiber Bragg Grating response/spectral characteristics, fabrication using phase mask, application and interrogation. Applications of fiber Bragg gratings, also known as in-fiber gratings, with emphasis on their sensing capabilities, interrogation of an array of sensors and their performance in structural health monitoring scenario are documented. First, we study the process of photosensitivity phenomenon in glasses, in particular GeO2:SiO2 glasses. For mathematical modeling we consider the 1-D refractive index profile along the propagation axis of an optical fiber drawn from the preform of such glasses. These 1-D index structures exhibit a bandgap for propagation along the fiber axis. We show how the bandgap is dependent on the two structural parameters: index periodicity and effective refractive index. The mathematical model provides the characteristics of three sensor parameters -resonance wavelength also known as the Bragg wavelength (λB ), filter bandwidth (ΔλB ), and reflectivity (R). We show that the evolution of the index structure in germanosilicate glasses is dependent on the inscription parameters such as exposure time, intensity of the laser used for inscribing, the interference pattern, and coherence of the laser system. In particular, a phase mask is used as the diffffacting element to generate the required interference pattern, that is exposed on the photosensitive fiber. We present a mathematical model of the electromagnetic diffraction pattern behind the phase mask and study the effect of the limited coherence of the writing laser on the interference pattern produced by the diffracting beams from the mask. Next, we demostrate the sensing capabilities of the fiber Bragg gratings for measuring strain, temperature and magnetic fields. We report linearity of 99.7% and sensitivity of 10.35pm/◦C for the grating temperature sensor. An array of gratings assigned with non-overlapping spectral windows is inscribed in a single fiber and applied for distributed sensing of structural health monitoring of an aircraft’s composite air-brake panel. The performance of these sensors is compared with the industry standard resistance foil gauges. We report good agreement between the two gauges (FBG and RSG). In some applications it is more desirable to know the spectral content, rather than the magnitude of perturbation. Fiber Bragg gratings sensors can be used to track events that occur in a very small span of time and contain high frequencies. Such applications demand very high speed wavelength demodulation methods. We present two interrogation techniques: wavelength-shift time-stamping (WSTS) and reflectivity division multiplexing (RDM). WSTS interrogation method employs the multiple threshold-crossing technique to quantize the sensor grating fluctuations and in the process produces the time stamps at every level-cross. The time-stamps are assembled and with the a priori knowledge of the threshold levels, the strain signal is reconstructed. The RDM methodology is an extension of the WSTS model to address multiple sensors. We show that by assigning unique reflectivities to each of the sensors in an array, the time-stamps from each of the sensors can be tagged. The time-stamps are collected by virtue of their corresponding pulse heights, and assembled to reconstruct the strain signal of each of the array sensor. We demonstrate that the two interrogation techniques are self-referencing systems, i.e., the speed at which the signals are reconstructed is instantaneous or as fast as the signal itself.

Extensão do método das diferenças finitas para o projeto e modelagem de dispositivos ópticos utilizando meios com propriedades diversas / Finite difference method extension for the design and modeling of optical devices using materials with diverse properties

Licinius Dimitri Sá de Alcantara 25 March 2004 (has links)
This work introduces three improved formalisms for the analysis of electromagnetic wave propagation through materials with distinct optical properties, i.e., isotropic, anisotropic, linear, nonlinear, or any combination of them. Two finite difference approaches were extensively investigated in this work for this purpose, namely the finite difference in time domain (FDTD), and the finite difference beam propagation method (2D and 3D FD-BPM), these in frequency domain. Initially, a TM (transverse magnetic) mode propagating through a planar magnetooptic/nonlinear/linear waveguide was investigated by way of a two-dimensional formalism (FDTD and FD-BPM). This mode polarization was chosen based on the orientation of the external magnetostatic field adopted, which favored the observation of non-reciprocal and nonlinear effects simultaneously. On the other hand, it is well known that FDTD formalisms are computationally intensives. Therefore, a great effort was dedicated to its frequency domain counterpart (FD-BPM), which was implemented in two and three dimensions. The later was further extended to a fully vectorial formalism, which is capable of simulating hybrid modes or even the energy transfer between orthogonal modes. This enabled us to investigate more complex geometries, such as an optical isolator based on magnetooptic rib waveguide. Additionally, complex phenomena, such as the dynamic of light condensates in bulk nonlinear Kerr media with saturation, also known as cubic-quintic nonlinear media, were investigated for the first time with a 3D vectorial formalism. Finally, numerical methods capable of handling any combination of materials with distinct optical properties (linear and/or nonlinear and/or magnetooptic) are an extraordinary tool for the scientific community for the design of new optical devices, as well as the investigation of new physical effects aimed for optical computing, that may result in fewer and more efficient components for optical communication systems.

Guides d’ondes dans un cristal de niobate de lithium périodiquement polarisé : fabrication et étude par des techniques de microscopie à sonde locale / Creation of optical waveguides with periodical domain structures in lithium niobate single crystals and their study by scanning probe microscopy methods

Neradovskiy, Maxim 17 June 2016 (has links)
Ceci démontre tout l'intérêt de ce processus / The investigation of influence of the soft proton exchange (SPE) optical waveguide (WG) creation onperiodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) has been done. It has been shown that the WG fabricationprocess can induce the formation of needle like nanodomains, which can be responsible for thedegradation of the nonlinear response of the WG created in PPLN crystals. The domain structure (DS)evolution has been studied in congruent lithium niobate (LN) crystals with surface layers modified bythree different proton exchange techniques. The significant decrease of the nucleation threshold fieldand qualitative change of domain rays nucleation and growth have been revealed. The formation of abroad domain boundary and dendrite domain structure as a result of nanodomains merging in front ofthe moving rays has been demonstrated. The formation of DS in LN with SPE by irradiation of coveredby electron resist polar surface of LN has been investigated. Formation of domains with arbitrary shapesas a result of discrete switching has been revealed. Finally, it has been demonstrated that electron beamirradiation of lithium niobate crystals with surface resist layer can produce high quality periodical domainpatterns after channel waveguide fabrication. Nonlinear characterizations show that the conversionefficiencies and the phase matching spectra conform to theoretical predictions, indicating that thiscombination presents a great interest for device fabrication. Second harmonic generation withnormalized nonlinear conversion efficiency up to 48%/(W cm2) has been achieved in such waveguides

Análise de sistemas CDMA ópticos / Analysis of optical CDMA systems

Santos Filho, Rivail Vilas Boas dos 01 September 2006 (has links)
The evolution of optical networks verified in the last few years has been characterized by the search for better bandwidth utilization efficiency. The successful implementation of practical code division for multiple access techniques (CDMA) in mobile communications systems has stimulated new investigations on this topic, particularly in the optical domain (optical CDMA). This is justified due to some remarkable attributes of this technology, such flexibility in code design, capacity on demand, safety, and high scalability. In this context, this dissertation presents, initially, a comprehensive review of several code configurations for OCDMA proposed in the literature, with emphasis particularly on the correlation and users availability properties. Next, it describes the modeling of an optical system consisting of the following three subsystems: generation, transmission, and signal detection. The penalties imposed to the optical codes by the propagating medium, as well as by the devices employed in the system, are accounted for and their influence on the performance of some coding configurations is investigated. The knowledge of how and when these penalties will affect the system is crucial in optical signal processing based on codification schemes. Finally, this work also addresses some aspects related to quality of service (QoS) and flexibility of the OCDMA technology in optical communications systems.

Design of microlaser in medium infrarer wavelengnth range for biomedicine and environmental monitoring / Design de microlaser moyen infrarouge pour la biomédecine et la surveillance environnementale

Palma, Giuseppe 20 April 2017 (has links)
Optical micro-resonators represent one of the most important devices in photonics. A special kind is constituted by the WGM resonators, i.e. devices with circular symmetry such as spheres, rings, disks and toroids. They are characterized by very small dimensions, exceptionally quality factor and very low modal volume becoming a valuable alternative to the traditional optical micro-resonators, such as Fabry-Pérot cavities. These devices allow applications in several fields, such as sensing, optical filtering and nonlinear optics. In particular, different applications in biology and medicine, molecular spectroscopy, environmental monitoring, astronomy and astrophysics are feasible in Mid-Infrared wavelength range. For example, it includes a lot of strong vibrational transitions that act as “fingerprints” of many bio-molecules and organic species allowing the develop of innovative spectroscopic applications and novel sensors. In addition, the earth's atmosphere is transparent in two atmospheric transmission windows at 3–5 μm and 8–13 μm and then applications such as remote explosive detection, e.g. in airports and for border control, and covert communication systems are feasible. The wide transparency window of chalcogenide glasses in Mid-Infrared makes possible the development of several devices. Chalcogenide glasses are characterized by good mechanical strength and chemically durability in water and atmosphere. Furthermore, the high refractive index, high quantum efficiency, the low phonon energy and high rare-earth solubility enables the emissions at long wavelengths. In this thesis, the design of innovative chalcogenide devices for applications in Mid-Infrared is investigated using an ad-hoc home-made computer code. The devices are based on three kinds of micro-resonators: microspheres, micro-disks and microbubbles. The WGM resonators are efficiently excited by using tapered fiber and ridge waveguides. A novel design procedure is developed using the particle swarm optimization approach (PSO). It allows to maximize the gain of an amplifier based on an erbium-doped microsphere lasing at 2.7 μm.An innovative technique in order to characterize the spectroscopic properties of rare-earth is developed integrating the WGM electromagnetic investigation with PSO algorithm. The method is based on two subsequent steps: in the first one, the geometrical parameters are recovered, in the second one, the spectroscopic parameters. The recovered values are affected by an error less than that provided by high-cost measurement instruments. Furthermore, the procedure is very versatile and could be applied to develop innovative sensing systems.Interesting applications could be obtained exciting the micro-resonator by a tapered fiber with two identical LPGs on the sides. Indeed the LPGs can select the fiber modes coupling with the WGM resonator. Using different pairs of identical LPGs operating in different wavelength bands, it is possible to selective couple different micro-resonators by using the same optical fiber. An ad-hoc computer code is developed and validated and it demonstrated the feasibility of a microbubble glucose sensor. In order to obtain a compact and cost-saving light source in Mid-Infrared, rare-earth doped micro-disk are investigated. A computer code is developed in order to simulate a rare-earth doped micro-disk coupled to two ridge waveguide, one at signal wavelength and the other one at pump wavelength. The model is validated using an erbium-doped micro-disk emitting at 4.5 μm. A very promising device for application in Mid-Infrared is obtained using a praseodymium-doped micro-disk emitting at 4.7 μm.
