Basque, Joëlle 01 1900 (has links)
This dissertation makes theoretical and methodological contributions to questions of identity construction in organizations. It does so by developing an original conceptualization of the problem of temporal dimensions of identity, made visible through the dialectical tension between stability and change. In the organizational communication literature, identity is either seen as something that evolves or as something that is stable through time. For instance, many authors adopt a performative stance to study identity, which makes it difficult to take into consideration fixity of identity. I postulate that these two dimensions of identity are in a dialectical tension and that the process of configuration and interpretation of narratives makes their mediation possible. Moreover, I demonstrate that keeping in tension temporal dimensions of identity through narratives makes it possible to study the concomitant construction of individual, collective and organizational identities. Using an analytical method drawn from Ricoeur’s theory of narrative identity (Ricoeur, 1995) as well as inspired by conversation analysis, I analyzed data drawn from group interviews with employees of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police conducted in 2007 and 2008. This method allowed me to simultaneously analyze textual and contextual aspects of identity narratives

In order to develop this theme, in first place, we seek to localize this study within the religion studies. We propose that hermeneutics can be a mediator among philosophy, theology, religion studies, and their respective approaches to religion. Next, we present exemplary how the discussions of philosophy, theology, and religion studies occur inside literature. We show also, briefly, how the problem of evil is placed as a theme of interest for philosophy and theology. At the end of this part, we present C. S. Lewis, the author whose work Out of the Silent Planet is the object of our study, and we expose the methodology of this thesis. In the second chapter, we discuss panoramically the problem of evil in philosophy and theology. Then, we present a panel with the major studies that examine the interface between the problem of evil and the works of C. S. Lewis. At the end of the chapter, we list the main categories/aspects of the problem of evil which are articulated in the apologetic approach of Lewis in The Problem of Pain, and that echoes in the fictional narrative of our object of study. The main categories/aspects of the problem of evil, which relate to the first volume of the Space Trilogy are: divine omnipotence, the fall of man, the human pain and the animal pain. In order to study the problem of evil in the literature, we seek in the literary philosophical hermeneutics of Paul Ricoeur a model of analysis. We abstract from the work Time and Narrative the Ricoeurian triple mímesis as an itinerary for the study of Out of the Silent Planet. At last, we apply the resulting model to the analysis of the first volume of the C. S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy. In mímesis I, we study the fiction environment and the characters of the story. In mímesis II, we locate the chapter in the work where the narrative can be seen as a whole. Then, we describe how the categories/aspects of the problem of evil are articulated in this part of Out of the Silent Planet, we verify how the narrative shares elements of the literature body of the time in which it was produced, and how it breaks from this tradition. In mímesis III, we approach the values and the ethical practical implications that can be verified in the reading of the book. C. S. Lewis proposes in his narrative a theodicy from a theist Christian standpoint, using fiction to transmit his way of understanding the problem of evil and its implications. No final da primeira parte, introduzimos C. S. Lewis, o autor cuja a obra Além do planeta silencioso é o objeto do nosso estudo e expomos a metodologia dessa dissertação.

Wojakowska, Miriam Natalie 08 June 2020 (has links)
This dissertation investigates a mutual reference between theology and philosophy in the 20th century dealing with the issue of the relation between language and reality. Rudolf Bultmann‘s Kerygma and Martin Heidegger‘s Ereignis try to describe, how language effects reality and existence. In their Hermeneutical Theology, Ernst Fuchs and Gerhard Ebeling define a christological relation: Because God acts through the word, human existence is defined through language. Their concept Wortgeschehen relates linguistic to existential layers of meaning in order to interpret the word of God as dynamic and justifying. The philosopher Paul Ricœur refers to this theological relation. In his hermeneutics of symbols, metaphors and texts, he tries to describe existential structures and effects of language and concerning this question also discusses the Wortgeschehen. Yet, Ricœur‘s reference to the theological concept points out structural and hermeneutical problems. Ricœur‘s own concept of a hermeneutic process integrates structure and meaning of a text, as well as the critical and faithful understanding into the process of interpretation. His position is open for hermeneutics of the Bible. Thus, there are several theological references to the philosopher. The discussion on parables in the 1970s represents a concrete intersection of both disciplines, involving Ricœur and the theological reception of his hermeneutics. At the same time the discussion elaborates the concept Wortgeschehen describing language mechanisms and existential effects more precisly. Through its continuing philosophical and theological development the Wortgeschehen proves a helpful concept concerning the question of hermeneutics of the word of God, because it connects the linguistic layer of the Word of God to hermeneutic and theological reasons of its existential effect.

On Memories in The Clouds over Metapontion by Eyvind Johnson.

Ask Johannesson, Anette January 2022 (has links)
Eyvind Johnson publicerade romanen Molnen över Metapontion 1957.

Relational Chaucer: Intersubjective Identity and Ricoeurian Narrative Hermeneutics

Amanda Elise Leary (11203698) 29 July 2021 (has links)
<p>This dissertation applies Paul Ricœur’s theory of narrative identity to Chaucer’s poetry. The idea of a narrative subjectivity addresses gaps and synthesizes key movements in Chaucer studies, engaging with key scholars such as George Lyman Kittridge, Carolyn Dinshaw, A.C. Spearing, and Mary Carruthers. Using Ricœur’s hermeneutic phenomenology, the chapters articulate how narrative is necessary to the construction and expression of both individual and collective identity and experience. Each chapter focuses on a key element of Ricœur’s narrative hermeneutic phenomenology and how that modality of narrative is used to construct a particular kind of identity. I argue for a self-in-relation: the self as constituted through relations to others, or intersubjectively, which is expressed in and as narrative. Ricœur’s hermeneutic distills several of Chaucer’s key interests: time, history, fictionality, and poetics; selfhood and alterity; the significance of language and of fidelity to one’s word; and agency, passivity, and suffering. By applying that heremeneutic, we can consider the extent to which Chaucer’s poetry may use narrative to represent or resolve those interests and their connection to identity.</p> <p>Chapter 1 explores the identity construction of three Chaucerian women by identifying patterns of yielding discursive authority that either subvert or redirect narrative structures of masculine authority. I argue that women like Criseyde have more control over their own lives and a more positive subject-position than previously recognized. In Chapter 2, I argue that racialized narratives shared by the Canterbury pilgrims structure their community by defining what kind of identity is acceptable—in this case, a white Christian identity, shared by all the pilgrims, that reproduces a Western hegemonic whiteness. In chapter 3, I argue that in Chaucer’s talking-animal poetry, the recognition and response that narrative facilitates results in an ethic of care that is invested in principles of solicitude and friendship. In Chapter<b> </b>4, I argue that Chaucer’s dream visions represent narratives of poetic subjectivity that are embedded in issues of memory and sociality that take shape in and as space. Finally, in conclusion I tie these arguments back to a question asked of the fictional representation of Chaucer himself: Who are you? This question animates much of Chaucer’s poetry and I have endeavored to show how Chaucer answers that question with and in narrative. </p>

THE QUESTION OF GOD: PHENOMENOLOGY, HERMENEUTICS, AND REVELATION IN JEAN-LUC MARION AND PAUL RICOEUR

Dahl, Darren E. 10 1900 (has links)
<p>This dissertation examines the thought of Jean-Luc Marion in light of his treatment of divine revelation and in connection to the hermeneutic phenomenology of Paul Ricoeur. It argues, first, that Marion’s thought bears within itself significant ambiguities that are determined by the legacies of the key concepts which organize his work: ‘givenness’ (<em>donation</em>) and saturation. Secondly, it also argues that even if a way can be found to resolve these ambiguities the resultant proposal does not meet the criticism raised by Paul Ricoeur in reference to phenomenologies of religion that remain determined by a ‘Husserlian idealism.’ As a result, the dissertation offers a study of Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of revelation in an effort to displace Marion’s account and offer an alternative proposal. Specifically, it treats the connection of Ricoeur’s proposed transformation of phenomenology through hermeneutics, the idea of a hermeneutics of testimony that is generated as a result of that transformation, and Ricoeur’s notion of revelation as being articulated in reference to the ‘world of the text.’ By focusing on the notion of ‘anteriority’ throughout the analysis, the dissertation argues that not only does Marion’s work remain limited by its formal commitments to pure apparition, but it fails to access the sort of radical anteriority that it seeks. This is so because it remains tied to a philosophy of consciousness which is blocked from accessing the pre-reflective level of belonging that is made accessible by Ricoeur’s hermeneutic phenomenology. By making this argument, the dissertation provides a critical analysis of Marion’s work from the perspective of divine revelation and, furthermore, brings that work into conversation with Paul Ricoeur. This important engagement between Ricoeur and Marion has not been adequately addressed in the current secondary literature and this dissertation fills that gap.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Mateos, Antonio Sanchez 22 August 2006 (has links)

Costa, Mirian Gado Fernandes 28 May 2008 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2016-04-27T17:27:23Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Mirian Gado Fernandes Costa.pdf: 1148833 bytes, checksum: 46a8a99b18e76a6f2ddb95575b9011a9 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-05-28 / Paul Ricoeur was concerned, in his political essays, with a philosophy of action linked to the willingness of human coexistence. In order to understand Politics as an activity based on coexistence, we should recognize concepts such as power, sovereignty, violence, as permanent features in the task of stabilization of life in common. Thus, we should revisit some philosophical works that illustrates this unique capacity of men. This work discusses Paul Ricoeur s political paradox concept, which was first brought to light in 1957, in the article he wrote analyzing the Hungarian Revolution. Focusing on Ricoeur s work, this text intends to clarify the political paradox concept, as well as to explicit political power problems such as its relative autonomy with respect to social-economic relations. The Hungarian events illustrate such problems, but this work also demonstrates how Ricoeur s analyses unfolded into a universal reflection about the political realm. Ricoeur discussed some of Hannah Arendt s papers; according to the later, Politics is the source of meaning for human life and a long-term political project is the only possibility of historical immortality for us, mortals. Some of these discussions brought up at the end of this dissertation, aim to shed light on the reflection about the political paradox and the problematic of power / Paul Ricoeur preocupou-se, em seus textos políticos, com uma filosofia da ação voltada para a vontade de coexistência dos homens.
