Outside traditional book publishing centres : the production of a regional literature in Western AustraliaHenningsgaard, Per Hansa January 2008 (has links)
This thesis provides a study of book publishing as it contributes to the production of a regional literature, using Western Australian publishing and literature as illustrative examples of this dynamic. 'Regional literature' is defined in this thesis as writing possessing cultural value that is specific to a region, although the writing may also have national and international value. An awareness of geographically and culturally diverse regions within the framework of the nation is shown to be derived from representations of these regions and their associated regional characteristics in the movies, television and books. In Australia, literature has been the primary site for expressions of regional difference. Therefore, this thesis analyses the impact of regionalism on the processes of book production and publication in Western Australias three major publishing houses a trade publishing house (Fremantle Press), an Indigenous publishing house (Magabala Books), and an academic publishing house (University of Western Australia Press). Book history, print culture studies and publishing studies, along with literary studies and cultural studies, roughly approximate a disciplinary map of the types of research that constitute this thesis. By examining regional literature in the context of its 'field of cultural production', this thesis maintains that regionalism and regional literature can avail themselves of a fresh perspective that shows them to be anything but marginal or exclusive. Regionalism has been a topic of peripheral interest, at least as far as scholarly research and academia are concerned, because those who are most likely to be affected by and thus interested in the topic, are also those who are most disempowered as a result of its attendant dynamics. However, as this thesis clearly demonstrates, access (or a lack thereof) to the field of cultural production (which in the case of print culture includes writers, literary agents, editors, publishers, government arts organisations, the media, schools, book clubs, and book retailers, just to name a few) plays a significant role in establishing and shaping an identity for marginalised 3 constituencies. The implications for this research are far-ranging, since both Western Australia and Australia can be understood as peripheries dominated in their different spheres (the 'national' and the 'international', respectively) by literary cultures residing elsewhere. Furthermore, there are parallels between this dynamic and the dynamic responsible for producing postcolonial literatures. The three publishing houses detailed in this thesis are disadvantaged by many of the factors associated with their distance from the traditional centres of book publishing, while at the same time producing a regional literature that serves as a platform from which the state broadcasts its distinctive contributions to the cultural landscape and to a wider understanding of concepts such as space, place and belonging. These publishing houses changed the way in which Australians and others have come to know and think about 'Australia', re-routing public consciousness and the national imagination.

Open Access an der Technischen Universität ChemnitzThümer, Ingrid 25 October 2006 (has links)
This is a special issue of the library's newsletter. In addition to the rector-circular 02/2006 we would like to give you further information about open access publishing at our university. The library welcomes the joint resolution recently made by the university's rectorate and its senate to support open access publishing at Chemnitz University of Technology.
- Rectorate and Senate of Chemnitz University of Technology invite the authors to publish their scientific works as pre- or postprintversion in MONARCH, under attention of the copyright.
- Rectorate and Senate encourage the scientists to publish in open access journals.
The library as a service provider for scientists and students is confronted with the effects of journal crisis. A dramatically reduction of acquired journal titles is the result. The university library is in the conviction that a long-term and world-wide support of Open Access can corrected and negotiate this development. Therefore is the activity of each individual producer of scientific information important. The acceptance and assistance from our authors is the base for transposition Open Access to the Chemnitz University of Technology.

Coffee table-böcker eller praktverk – begrepp, attityder och arbetssätt : Djupintervjuer med grafiska formgivare och förlagsanställda / Coffee table books or Luxury works – terms, attitudes and the work process : In-depth interviews with graphic designers and employees at publishing housesSäll, Esmeralda, Sörbom, Anna January 2014 (has links)
Semi-structured, in-depth interviews with eight Swedish graphic designers and employees at publishing houses were carried out with the purpose of mapping the strategic and creative work process of producing Coffee table books and Luxury works (Swedish praktverk), as well as respondents attitudes towards these processes. The three main steps identified in the process are presented and compared to results in previous studies. The production of these books was found to be complex due to the number of people involved, the time required, the costs involved and the relatively small profit margins. All of which increase the exposure to certain risks. The re-spondents however found the work to be exciting, enjoyable and fulfilling. In addition to this the study discovered the inconsistency between the definition of “Coffee table book” and “Luxury work” and what was found to be the com-monly accepted understanding of these. This applied particularly to the term “Coffee table book,” where some respondents associated the term to a lower standard of literature. The terms and definitions of these books will be dis-cussed as well as the market condition described by the respondents.

Learning in public: information literacy and participatory mediaForte, Andrea 06 July 2009 (has links)
This research examines new systems of information production that are made possible by participatory media. Such systems bring about two critical information literacy needs for the general public: to understand new systems in order to assess their products and to become adept participants in the construction of public information spaces. In this dissertation, I address both of these needs and propose a view of information literacy that situates the information literate as both consumer and producer. First, I examine a popular example of a new publishing system, Wikipedia, and present research that explains how the site is organized and maintained. I then turn my attention to the classroom and describe three iterations of design-based research in which I built new wiki tools to support publication activities and information literacy learning in formal educational contexts. I use the rhetorical notion of genre as an analytic lens for studying the use and impact of these new media in schools. Classroom findings suggest that the affordances of a wiki as an open, transparent publishing medium can support groups of writers in building a shared understanding of genre as they struggle with an unfamiliar rhetorical situation. I also demonstrate how writing on a public wiki for a broad audience was a particularly useful writing experience that brought about opportunities for reflection and learning. These opportunities include transforming the value of citation, creating a need to engage deeply with content, and providing both a need and a foundation for assessing information resources.

The purpose of this paper has been to look at the publishing done at three of Swedens biggest publishing houses, and how this publishing has looked in terms of adversity, such as skin color, sexuality and different types of illnesses and disabilities in youth literature. There where two questions that needed to be answered and they where: How has the publishing of youth books (age 12 and up) been during 2015 with these three big publishing houses, when it comes to adversity? How has adversity been portrayed in the main characters of the published books? To reach the purpose of this paper it was important to use both qualitative and quantitative research, which lead to it being two different types of research, one which looked at the adversity with the main characters, and one which became a statistical one that showed the lack of adversity amongst the main characters. The results of the research showed that there is still quite a way to go before youth literature has the kind of adversity that todays society needs.

The transformations of equipment and computer systems, and therefore their introduction in various spheres of human activity have influenced the way society creates and communicates. Originating from these changes, the Internet and the World Wide Web have enabled a cultural distinct movement, by which it is also observed a textual production directed to the dissemination and consolidation of scientific knowledge. In this scientific context created by digital tools, some questions arise, namely: One can consider the existence of an emerging academic-scientific genre (the cyberarticle) in the context of the Web? Is there a production context adjusted for the production and dissemination of cyberarticles? What are these digital technological tools to produce cyberarticles? In view of this, this thesis aims to characterize the cyberarticle as an emerging academic genre on the Web. This research was based on Bakhtin (1992) and his macro analytic studies on the genres, and Marcuschi (1999; 2008; 2010), Koch (2010) and Xavier (2001; 2009; 2010), especially when they refer to the relationship between genres and digital tools. These theories have articulated to the contributions of Lévy (1993; 1996) on the Cyberspace, the Cyberculture and the virtuality; to the contributions of Tapscott (2010) and Prensky (2001a; 2001b) on the Digital Generation and the digital natives and immigrants, respectively; and finally, to the contributions of Berners-Lee (1996; 2001; 2006) and O´Reilly (2005) on the Web. For a better understanding of the communication process through scientific journals, the studies of Biojone (2003) have become fundamental for research presented in this thesis. The methodological approach is constituted by two procedures of data observation and data collection: first, there was a cataloging of scientific journals and articles oriented to online publication, giving greater focus to the publications of the Universidade Federal de Sergipe and to proposals for scientific publication different from traditional forms; in the second procedure, a experience for production of cyberarticles in the Ciencidade (www.ciencidade.com.br) was accomplished with the participation of the students and professors of the UFS. By analyzing the virtual scientific journals of Universidade Federal de Sergipe it was verified that the text is limited to the use of static images and normalized links (ABNT, journal) and/or links created automatically by virtual word processors, which makes it a traditional scanned article. Moreover, in respect to proposals for different forms of publishing, along with the materials collected from the experience in the Ciencidade, it was clear that the production of cyberarticles is possible since there is a context that stimulates such production of cyberarticles. Thus, the cyberarticle can be considered an emerging academic and scientific genre in the context of the Web, because it is different from the genre of traditional scientific article due to the fact that it is characterized by integration of different languages and tools made possible by digital technology.
