A qualitative study on what influences students' reading interest from a teacher's perspective.

Jablonka, Andia January 2024 (has links)
The aim of this study is to elucidate what teachers believe influences students' reading interest both within and outside of school, as well as how teachers can foster a reading interest among their students through their teaching. To investigate this, qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted. Nine certified F-3 teachers were interviewed. The study's interview guide was followed during the interviews.  The results of the interviews indicate that factors positively influencing students' reading motivation, according to the interviewed teachers' own experiences and perceptions, include if the guardian has a positive attitude towards reading, acts as a reading role model, and reads aloud to their child. The results also show that guardians can inhibit students' reading motiva- tion, according to the interviewed teachers, by not acting as a reading role model and by dis- playing a negative attitude towards reading. The interviewed teachers also believed that the teacher needs to act as a reading role model in the classroom and that they can develop students' reading motivation through activities such as reading aloud.

Factors causing career indecision of school leavers in Kwandebele

Mabena, Esther Ntombana 06 1900 (has links)
This research was undertaken to determine factors causing career indecision of schoolleavers in Kwandebele. Literature study indicates that factors such as interest, sex, dependency, vocational immaturity, the economy and politics have a direct influence on career indecision. Literature study further indicates that parties involved in career decision-making also contribute to career indecision. 424 Kwandebele school leavers answered questionnaires. The schoolleavers were requested to indicate the importance and contributions of five categories, namely personal aspects, family, school, guidance teacher and society to his career choice making process. Most of the personal aspects were regarded as important and also the other four categories showed a significant difference between school leavers who have made a choice and those that have not made a choice. This research could not cover the implication of career education at all levels of the child, recommendations for future research have been made. / Psychology of Education / M. Ed. A descontrução e reconstrução dos modelos parentais intergeracionais através do sociodrama construtivista / De-construction and reconstruction of intergenerational parental roles through constructivist socio-dramas

Castello, Ana Lúcia Gomes 12 May 2006 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 TESE- VOLUME 1 FINAL Ana Lucia.pdf: 635851 bytes, checksum: 7fbf828fbd20ea6a528c918408a0b6de (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-05-12 / In this study, the author seeks to present a new form of parental guidance, called Constructivist Socio-drama, for bringing up children. Based on the general current view that the process of bringing up children has become an obstacle race in addition to one having to assume other roles within the family boundaries, for which parents have not been trained -, husbands and wives are faced with increasing difficulties to transmit to their children basic breeding concepts, or even direct the breeding process towards a positive construction of the emotional, social and family identity. The main purpose of this work is to enable parents, by means of group sessions, to understand the inter-generational transmission in the breeding strategies, and to reconstruct those strategies deemed inadequate. Firstly, the author takes a theoretical approach to parenthood in post-modern ages, conducts a study of the historical aspects related to the process of bringing up children in Brazil, and finally a synthesis of parental role-models in different contexts. Bringing up children in different social levels and the development theory of families during the three phases of the vital cycle, namely, the formation of the couple, families with small children and families with adolescents, are chapters that elicit the theoretical body of this research. The author then reflects on the repetition of inter-generational role-models and on modern family themes, which were approached by means of questionnaires previously applied to each parent, and based on the answers they provided. In order to achieve the proposed goals, a qualitative study was conducted through Constructivist Socio-dramas with groups of parents. Such Constructivist Socio-dramas are described in their peculiarities as an instrument to be used for articulation, elaboration and review of the constructions used by human beings to reorganize their experiences and actions. In this study, the author also deployed a questionnaire to gather data on the difficulties parents face in bringing up their children. Fifteen Socio-dramas were conducted in different places: at a Pediatrics Clinic and at an NGO, both in São Paulo, and they were filmed and photographed upon authorization of the participants. Based on the narratives produced at the Constructivist Socio-dramas, the data analysis points towards an image of parents seeking behavioral and emotional growth in bringing up their children. It also points towards the perception of inter-generational repetitious situations, which were revised and made it possible to elaborate new models for the performance of the parental role / A autora, nesta pesquisa, visa mostrar uma nova forma de orientação de pais, denominada Sociodrama Construtivista.

Kvinnor i karriären i Kriminalvården : En studie om kvinnors karriärmöjligheter på en svensk klass 1-anstalt / Women’s careers in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service : A study of women’s career opportunities in a Swedish class 1 prison

Elioneri, Angelica, Moqvist, Isabell January 2023 (has links)
The study Women’s career in the Swedish Prison and Probation Service is based on the notion of gender equality. The Swedish Prison and Probation Service is a government agency and must, just like everyone who operates in the Swedish labor market, ensure that laws and regulations are followed. In the next few years, the Swedish Prison and Probation Service needs to expand to meet society's needs and demands, which requires further recruitment for all positions within the agency. The agency wants to continue to strive towards gender equality and attract women to the historically male-dominated work roles. According to the Prison Service's annual report from 2021, it can be seen that even today women are found mainly in the caring professions, which could be considered traditionally gender-stereotypically female roles. Women are usually found in the lower working positions where they also tend to stay. The purpose of the study is to study differences between men's and women's interest and desire for advancement within one of the agency’s class 1 prisons, and thereby contribute with knowledge to possible causes. In order to reach the purpose of the study, a qualitative and quantitative method have been used, where six interviewees were providing information and further 27 respondents answered a questionnaire. The interviewees are in managerial positions and the respondents work within the institution's largest occupational group - prison officers. The study shows that there are no clear differences between men's and women's willingness to advance to higher managerial positions. The essential difference lies in the fact that the way men and women show interest in advancement differs. It appears that the phenomenon that men and women show different interest in advancing is due to a societal level with norms and values based on gender, rather than an organizational level. Although the Swedish Prison and Probation Service strives for gender equality, it is the existence of attitudes and behaviors of the society that play a decisive role where formal responsibility within organizations are the same regardless of gender. During the work of this study, it has, however, been shown that the informal responsibility can be at least as extensive as the formal one, where women both bear and take the greatest responsibility.

A Study of Current and Former Women in Faculty and Administrative Leadership Positions at East Tennessee State University.

Naholi, George 03 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This qualitative case study was designed to determine the perceptions about female leadership among female faculty and administrators at East Tennessee State University. Participants were asked about the motivating and prohibiting factors (barriers) that affected their leadership capabilities at the institution. They cited motivating factors that led them to optimal performance. These included family support, mentoring practices, affirmative action, collegial working atmosphere, support from the top leadership, and encouragement from their colleagues. The dissertation was also to investigate how female leaders perceived their leadership roles and the factors that enhanced female leadership and the barriers that hindered female leadership at ETSU. The women in this study talked about the impediments or barriers of their upward movement. These included salaries that were lower than those of their male colleagues, stereotyped thinking within the community with biases against females, family chores vis-à-vis work schedules, sexual discrimination, lack of role models, etc. The findings were: (a) Female leadership was uniquely relationship-oriented; (b) female leaders combined work and family and managed the two fairly well; (c) female leaders were more likely to mentor other women but also were often mentored by men; (d) female leaders worked at a more relaxed pace with details in mind and did not have the target of the big picture as a priority; (e) they worked hard to attain the positions previously held by men and are now at par in higher positions both in faculty and administration; (f) they worked hard to surmount the barriers placed in their way as they moved up the ladder in faculty and administrative positions; (g) they volunteered for positions in the staff and faculty senates without considering financial gains; (h) they were the majority in the lower ranks of the administrative ladder of the university and played crucial supportive roles; and (i) their leadership styles were more humanitarian and on the relationship philosophy than were the leadership styles of their male counterparts.

Understanding Brigham Young University's Technology Teacher Education Program's Sucess in Attracting and Retaining Female Students

Cox, Katrina M. 12 July 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of the study was to attempt to understand why Brigham Young University Technology Teacher Education program has attracted and retained a high number of females. This was done through a self-created survey composed of four forced responses, distributed among the Winter 2006 semester students. Likert-scale questions were outlined according to the five theoretical influences on women in technology, as established by Welty and Puck (2001) and two of the three relationships of academia, as established by Haynie III (1999), as well as three free response questions regarding retention and attraction within the major. Findings suggested strong positive polarity in four of the five influences and in both relationships, with particular emphasis on subject content, positive teacher/student relationships, as well as an overall positive environment as major contributors to attraction and retention at this university. "Role Models, Mentors, and Peers" was the only influence that scored in the negative range. Though the effect size showed differences between males and females on individual questions as well as the two relationships and "Messages from Counselors", no practical difference was found between the male and female perceptions under the five remaining general categories. In all three categories where a medium to large effect size was shown, females were favored in having more positive responses and perceptions than males.
