Entre a descrença e a sedução: releituras do Mito de Don Juan em Álvares de Azevedo e em Castro Alves / Between Disbelief and Seduction: Reinterpretations of the Myth of Don Juan in Álvares de Azevedo and Castro Alves

Tereza Cristina Mauro 28 April 2014 (has links)
This approach has the purpose to verify how the transformations undergone in the design of the myth in the passage of Azevedos lyric for that of Castro Alves are result of the different approaches of love for both poets, which vacillated between highly idealized love and carnal desire, related to disbelief and sarcasm in the work of the first, while the presence of the myth in the second would have a decisive contribution to a fuller experience of love. Detailed examination of the appropriation of such a myth, based on the worldview introduced by Romanticism, allows review on a new basis the said renewal (concept always debatable when put in the light of the myths and precepts put into circulation by the romantics in the European context) assigned to treatment dispensed to a woman in the lyric of Castro Alves, without resorting to anachronistic affiliations, such as realism avant la lettre. This detailed examination allows also support the insertion of Castro Alves in the literary system of then, from an internal analysis of the poems that address the myth in question, revealing dialogues and tensions in comparison with the treatment of this common theme in the lyric of Castro Alves and the previous generation, whose figurehead is Álvares de Azevedo

The memory of the inhabitants of the Araguaia: leadership, struggle and resistance!

Renata Lemos Petta 15 December 2016 (has links)
This research is to analyze the memory of the Araguaia peasants on one of its main fighters \"Osvaldão\". From the author\'s participation in the research for the production of the documentary entitled \"Osvaldão\" interviews were collected and, through them, identify the \" mythical \" memories around the aforementioned character. These memories reveal a man with extraordinary and even supernatural qualities. Our goal is to analyze elements that propitiated this memory \"mythical\" and how it remains present among the residents of the Araguaia. With contributions from Martin - Baró, Halbwachs and Selligman - Silva understand the trauma of relationships and different strategies of memory to ensure the survival of those who remember. The symbolization and the creation of the myth then emerge as a need to be able to give direction where no one has. This possibility of symbolic creation, resistance and also the intense feeling of solidarity among residents and Osvaldão function as memory references. In Benjamin, we understand that the miraculous components of the narrative function as fixers and perpetuators of it factors. In the interviews we noticed the intense affection of the residents in relation to Osvaldão, the trauma of the experiences in the war and the creation of the myth not only as a survival strategy of the residents, but also Osvaldão

The aim of this research is to investigate how people from Minas Gerais are represented among the news, interviews and notes in Jornal Minas, from Rede Minas de Televisao, which is a state broadcasting. It is intended to know whether the identity narrated by the news is influenced by tradition, especially of literature, or whether it is an identity that disqualifies the regional character in a way that prioritizes the global cicizen's patterned profile, or, in a third possibility, if state broadcasting's journalism chooses such an identity conception that considers all the diversity of Minas, which is the state with more towns and cities among the others in Brazil.

This thesis, contributing to Literary Studies, approaches Clarice Lispector to the Jewish tradition, more precisely to the one linked to the interpretation of sacred texts, resorting mainly to A hora da estrela (The Hour of the Star), the last book she published while still living. It does so by recuperating, in this literary work, the presence of mythical accounts from the Judeo-Christian Scriptures, showing that these accounts have been recaptured and updated with the help of parody. In order to do so, works of Nelson Vieira, Nádia Battella Gotlib and Berta Waldman (on the production of Brazilian-Jewish writers), Mircea Eliade (on myth) and Linda Hutcheon (on parody) have been used as main theoretical reference sources. The methodology used was the qualitative-interpretative one, based on descriptive and comparative analyses of literary and theoretical texts. It has been evidenced, within A hora da estrela, Lispector‘s approximation to multiple cultural traditions, mainly the Jewish one, which she used to hide when questioned about this subject.

Abstract: The thesis has its focus on Affirmative Actions in Brazilian higher education. It problematizes the admission's meaning, through quotas, for black students of Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina - IFSC, Campus São José in the courses of Graduation and Telecommunications Systems. It uses questionnaire as a research tool to analyze the socioeconomic profile of those students, to register their opinions about racial discrimination in Brazilian society and in IFSC - Campus São José and to identify their undestanding about Affirmative Actions and about the quotas program in this educational establishment. The theorical approach is based on the slavery process in Brazil and the construction of the myth of racial democracy and the educational inequalities between black and white people to access higher education. It contextualizes the Affirmative Actions in the USA and in Brazil and approaches the aspects that distinguish the conquest of reparation policies, in these countries. The quotas policy in higher education has provoked a heated discussion in Brazilian society and the arguments for and against will be presented in this dissertation. Considering the social and historical context it will report how the quota policy has been implemented for black people in the Instituto Federal de Santa Catarina. The research reveled the importance of the Afirmative Actions Program for black students that joined through the quota system, giving the possibility of access to the right of joining the higher education, expanding the educational and social mobility oportunity, and especially the reversal of a historical process of discrimination. / Mestrado / Filosofia e História da Educação / Mestre em Educação

Dichotomy in American Western Mythology

Robinson, Scott E. (Scott Elmon), 1961- 05 1900 (has links)
The fundamental dichotomy between savage and civilized man is examined within the archetypal Western myth of American culture. The roots of the dichotomy are explored through images produced between 1888 and 1909 by artists Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. Four John Ford films are then used as a basis for the "dichotomous archetype" approach to understanding Western myth in film. Next, twenty-nine "historical" and "contemporary" Western movies are discussed chronologically, from The Virginian (1929) to Dances with Wolves (1990), in terms of the savage/civilized schema as it is personified by the roles of archetypal characters. The conclusion proposes a potential resolution of the savage/civilized conflict through an ecumenical mythology that recognizes a universal reverence for nature.

"The Politics of Restoration": the Rhetorical Vision of Camelot and Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 Campaign

Martin, Marilyn Ann, 1959- 12 1900 (has links)
This study critically analyzed four selected campaign speeches by Robert Kennedy from his 1968 campaign to determine his use of the Camelot myth and his success in portraying himself as the heir apparent to the Kennedy legend. Using procedures adapted from fantasy theme analysis, the rhetorical vision of Camelot was outlined, and the fantasy themes and fantasy types within it were determined. The public persona of Robert Kennedy was also evaluated. Throughout the speeches analyzed, Robert Kennedy invoked themes identified within the rhetorical vision of Camelot. In addition to his own themes of social justice and reconciliation, Kennedy promoted his brother's legend. Chaining evidence provided proof of the public's participation in the rhetorical vision demonstrating Kennedy's success with these themes.

Phèdre et la femme de Putiphar dans les littératures des XIXe et XXe siècles : deux figures de tentatrices à l'épreuve de la condition féminine / Phaedra and Potiphar’s wife in the XIXth and XXth century Literatures : Two Figures of Temptation through the Female Condition

Negovanovic, Catherine 11 December 2015 (has links)
Even if comparing Phaedra and Potiphar’s wife seems to be strange, this study has pointed out the structural similarity of their stories and probably a same origin : the confrontation between Ishtar and Gilgamesh in the 2nd millennium B.C. The pattern of the rejected temptress who takes revenge has split and has taken two directions. In the Near East, it became the Potiphar’s wife motif and in the Greek area Phaedra’s myth. Through literary history, the preference has gone sometimes to one, sometimes to the other, until this amazing situation : Potiphar’s wife overruns the 19th century and Phaedra the 20th. The origin of the biblical temptress explains the phenomenon. She’s oriental during a period in which Europe is fascinated by Orient and Orientalism. Furthermore, she has inherited Christian ancestral misogyny and Sade’s influence. Finally, the figure meets the myth of the femme fatale born in the second part of the century. In fact, in reaction to the beginnings of feminism as if it were an invasion, men build a phantasie of feminine Evil. And Potiphar’s wife and its avatars become lustful seductresses. But first Word War balances the situation and Phaedra comes back. Embodying new beliefs, she echoes back the female condition. Subversive, personifying Desire and the fulfilment of the feminine, claiming for a new place in society, sweeping ancient rules, embodying political and timeless human values, this new Phaedra is in the middle of this chaotic 20th century a bright and eternal heroine.

HISTÓRIA, MITO E IDENTIDADE EM O CONQUISTADOR, DE ALMEIDA FARIA. / HISTORY, MYTH OF IDENTITY IN O CONQUISTADOR, BY ALMEIDA FARIA.

Lima, Silvani Lopes 15 December 2006 (has links)
This Mastership Dissertation uses as corpus analysis the novel O Conquistador by Almeida Faria. The work interpretation considers three reading points: History, Mith, and Identity. First, we make a survey of the Sebastianism instauration historical context in Portugal, because the dialog established into the work proposes a review of these historical references, made possible by the use of irony, intertext, and periodic reversion. We still search to define sebastianism through the Claude Lévi Strauss thought who says that a myth can be reused for ends of historical legitimation, and through the Roland Barthes conception of myth as a linguistic phenomenon, ideologically set. The reflection about identity is from Eduardo Lourenço s idea that there would be a hyperidentity problem in Portugal. This situation is seen as a result of a country attachment to the heroic past, in part imagined. Besides, the Walter Benjamin s formulations about the archaic narrator clarify the villager s universe where the novel s main character was born and grew up. These individual subject characteristics, who experiences a conflict between reason and imagination, point to a collective subject representation. The novel, that presents a first-person narrator, holds, through the main character Sebastião de Castro, an awkward point with the Portuguese king D. Sebastião. The periodic reversion game processed into the work causes laughter and produces the myth and history demythification.
