Uncanny modalities in post-1970s Scottish fiction : realism, disruption, tradition

This thesis addresses critical conceptions of Scottish literary development in the twentieth-century which inscribe realism as both the authenticating tradition and necessary telos of modern Scottish writing. To this end I identify and explore a Scottish ‘counter-tradition’ of modern uncanny fiction. Drawing critical attention to techniques of modal disruption in the works of a number of post-1970s Scottish writers gives cause to reconsider that realist teleology while positing a range of other continuities and tensions across modern Scottish literary history. The thesis initially defines the critical context for the project, considering how realism has come to be regarded as a medium of national literary representation. I go on to explore techniques of modal disruption and uncanny in texts by five Scottish writers, contesting ways in which habitual recourse to the realist tradition has obscured important aspects of their work. Chapter One investigates Ali Smith’s reimagining of ‘the uncanny guest’. While this trope has been employed by earlier Scottish writers, Smith redesigns it as part of a wider interrogation of the hyperreal twenty-first-century. Chapter Two considers two texts by James Robertson, each of which, I argue, invokes uncanny techniques familiar to readers of James Hogg and Robert Louis Stevenson in a way intended specifically to suggest concepts of national continuity and literary inheritance. Chapter Three argues that James Kelman’s political stance necessitates modal disruption as a means of relating intimate individual experience. Re-envisaging Kelman as a writer of the uncanny makes his central assimilation into the teleology of Scottish realism untenable, complicating the way his work has been positioned in the Scottish canon. Chapter Four analyses A.L. Kennedy’s So I Am Glad, delineating a similarity in the processes of repetition which result in both uncanny effects and the phenomenon of tradition, leading to Kennedy’s identification of an uncanny dimension in the concept of national tradition itself. Chapter Five considers the work of Alan Warner, in which the uncanny appears as an unsettling sense of significance embedded within the banal everyday, reflecting an existentialism which reaches beyond the national. In this way, I argue that habitual recourse to an inscribed realist tradition tends to obscure the range, complexity and instability of the realist techniques employed by the writers at issue, demonstrating how national continuities can be productively accommodated within wider, pluralistic analytical approaches.

Supramolecular Chemistry: New chemodosimeters and hybrid materials for the chromo-fluorogenic detection of anions and neutral molecules

[EN] Abstract The present PhD thesis entitled "Supramolecular Chemistry: New chemodosimeters and hybrid materials for the chromo-fluorogenic detection of anions and neutral molecules" is based on the application of supramolecular chemistry and material science principles for the development of optical chemosensors for anions and neutral molecules detection. The second chapter of this PhD thesis is devoted to the preparation of chemodosimeters for the chromo-fluorogenic detection of fluoride, diisopropyl fluorophosphates (DFP) and hydrogen sulfide. The optical detection of fluoride anion was achieved by using a pyridine derivative containing a t-butyldimethylsilyl ether group. Aqueous solutions of the chemodosimeter were colorless but turned yellow upon addition of fluoride anion. Also a remarkable enhancement in emission was observed only upon the addition of fluoride. The optical changes were ascribed to a fluoride-induced hydrolysis of the silyl ether moiety. Also a chemodosimeter for the optical recognition of DFP, a nerve agent simulant, was prepared. In this case, the chemodosimeter was based on a stilbene pyridinium derivative functionalized with hydroxyl and silyl ether moieties. Aqueous solutions of the chemodosimeter were colorless changing to yellow upon DFP addition. The optical changes were ascribed to a hydroxyl phosphorylation followed by a fluoride-induced hydrolysis of the silyl ether group. Besides, that probe was implemented in test strips and DFP detection in gas phase was accomplished. Finally, the fluorogenic recognition of hydrogen sulfide anion was explored. For this purpose different fluorophores were selected and fucntionalized with 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether groups. The prepared probes were neraly non-emissive but remarkable emission enhancements upon addition of hydrogen sulfide were observed. The emission enhancements observed were due to a selective sulfide-induced hydrolysis of the 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether moiety that yielded the free fluorophores. Another set of chemodosimeters equipped with azide and sulfonylazide moieties were prepared. Again these probes were non-fluorescent but upon addition of hydrogen sulfide an important enhancement in emission was found. The selective response was ascribed to a reduction of the azide and sulfonylazide moieties to amine and sulfonylamide induced by hydrogen sulfide anion. Besides, the viability assays showed that these dosimeters were essentially non-toxic and real-time fluorescence imaging measurements confirmed their ability to detect intracellular hydrogen sulfide at micromolar concentrations. The third chapter of this PhD thesis was devoted to the preparation of nanoscopic gated materials and their use in sensing protocols. In a first step a gated material for the optical detection of glutathione (GSH) was prepared. For this purpose MCM-41 mesoporous silca nanoparticles were selected as inorganic scaffold. The pores were loaded with safranine O and the external surface was functionalized with disulfide-containing oligo(ethylene glycol) moieties. Dye delivery from aqueous suspensions of the sensory material was only observed in the presence of GSH. The signalling paradigm was ascribed to the selective reduction of the disulfide bond by GSH which induced pore opening and dye release. Also capped organic-inorganic hybrid materials for the selective detection of hydrogen sulfide were prepared and characterized. In this case the same MCM-41 support was used and charged with [Ru(bipy)3]2+ dye. Then, the external surface was functionalized with Cu(II)-macorcyclic complexes and finally, the pores were capped by the addition of the bulky anion hexametaphosphate. Aqueous suspensions of this material showed negligible dye release whereas in the presence of hydrogen sulfide anion a remarkable colour change was observed. This optical response was ascribed to a demetallation process of the Cu(II) complex induced by hydrogen sulfide. / [ES] Resumen La presente tesis doctoral titulada "Química supramolecular: Nuevos dosímetros químicos y materiales híbridos para la detección cromo-fluorogénica de aniones y moléculas neutras." está basada en la aplicación de principios básicos de la química supramolecular y de la ciencia de materiales en el desarrollo de sensores ópticos para aniones y moléculas neutras. El segundo capítulo de esta tesis doctoral está dedicado a la preparación de dosímetros químicos para la detección cromo-fluorogénica de fluoruro, diisopropil fluorofosfato (DFP) y sulfuro de hidrógeno. Para la detección óptica del anión fluoruro se sintetizó un derivado de piridina funcionalizado con un t-butildimetilsilil éter. En este capítulo también se describe la preparación de un dosímetro químico para la detección de DFP, que es un simulante de agentes nerviosos. Este dosímetro está basado en un estilbeno funcionalizado con una sal de piridinio que contiene grupos hidroxilo y silil éter en su estructura. Finalmente se prepararon dos familias de sensores para la detección óptica de hidrógeno sulfuro. La primera familia de sensores consiste en fluoróforos comunes funcionalizados con 2,4-dinitrofenil éteres. Los sensores preparados no presentaron una emisión de fluorescencia importante mientras que, en presencia del anión hidrógeno sulfuro, se observó un aumento significativo. La segunda familia de dosímetros también estaba compuesta por ciertos fluorofóros pero, en este caso, funcionalizados con grupos azida y sulfonilazida. Los dosimétros preparados, siguiendo esta segunda aproximación, tampoco dieron una fluorescencia significativa observándose un aumento de la misma al añadir el anión hidrógeno sulfuro. El tercer capítulo de esta tesis doctoral está dedicado a la preparación de materiales híbridos nanoscópicos funcionalizados con puertas moleculares y su aplicación en protocolos de reconocimiento. En primer lugar se preparó un material para la detección óptica de glutatión (GSH). Para ello se emplearon nanopartículas de MCM-41 mesoporosas como soporte inorgánico. Los poros del soporte fueron cargados con el colorante safranina O y la superficie externa funcionalizada con oligo(etilenglicol) conteniendo enlaces disulfuro. También se prepararon y caracterizaron varios materiales híbridos para la detección selectiva del anión hidrógeno sulfuro. En este caso también se empleó, como soporte inorgánico, sílice mesoporosa MCM-41. Los poros del soporte inorgánico fueron cargados con [Ru(bipy)3]2+ y la superficie externa funcionalizada con varios complejos macrocíclicos de Cu(II). The objective of this thesis is to draw up the design documentation for the construction of a hotel. The hotel is situated on the edge of the golf resort Kaskáda near to Jinačovice. It’s a brick building with two above – ground floors and one underground. There is the staircase in the building that creates protected escape route. The perimeter wall is designed of ceramic bricks Porotherm T Profi. They are filled – in by mineral wool. The hotel is divided into three dilatational parts. There are 35 guest rooms in the hotel; two of them are barrier – free, in total 63 beds. In the ground floor there are entrance, reception, restaurant, bar, kitchen with the background. In the basement there are technical equipment, a fitness room, a wellness, changing rooms, washrooms and a bar. The roof of the hotel is flat. There is the terrace accessible from the apartments in the second floor above the restaurant.

Konstruktion und Transformation von Identität in der Migrationsgesellschaft

Migration ist eines der präsentesten und prägendsten Themen unserer Zeit. In dieser Ethnographie richtet sich der Blick exemplarisch auf die Akteur*innen der (‚Gastarbeits‘-)Migration, hier konkret auf mehrgenerationelle Familien im transnationalen sozialen Migrations- und Verflechtungsraum Türkei-Deutschland. Im Fokus stehen dabei ihre Identitätsprozesse, In- und Exklusionserfahrungen und Empowermentpraxen nicht nur während der ‚Gastarbeits‘-, sondern auch in der Prä- und Postmigrationsphase. Migration wird in dieser Forschungsarbeit akteurszentriert aus dem konkreten sozialen, hier familiär eingebetteten Alltagshandeln und den Narrationen ihrer Subjekte in dichter teilnehmender Beobachtung beschrieben. Auf den Fersen der Familien(angehörigen) und ihren Identitäten in Bewegung erweiterte sich die Feldforschung zu einer multilokalen, -methodischen und -lingualen Ethnographie. Als Proband*innen traten dabei zwei Familien aus der ostanatolischen Dersim-Region der Türkei mit zwei Spezifika hervor; zum einen durch ihre ursprünglich familiäre Sprache Zazaki und zum anderen ihre Zugehörigkeit zur alevitischen (Glaubens-)Gemeinschaft, wobei innerhalb des alevitischen Glaubenssystems die eine einer Ocak- und die andere einer Talip-Familie angehört. Migration und darin auch Identitätsarbeit zeigen sich in dieser Familienethnographie als ein geistig, körperlich wie auch emotional konflikthafter und komplexer individuell-sozialer Prozess der permanenten Aushandlung und Veränderung unter Bedingungen von Diversität und intersektionaler Differenz. In ihrer Ambivalenz ist dieser Prozess somit Herausforderung und Chance zugleich. Resümierend lässt sich Identitätsarbeit im transnationalen Migrations- und Familienraum auch als Empowerment- und Powersharingarbeit beschreiben, als einem kreativ-interaktiven Handeln im „dritten Raum“, dem „Zwischenraum“ (BHABHA), in dem jenseits von Norm und Abweichung bzw. Insider- und Outsider-Positionalitäten (ELIAS/SCOTSON) „hybride“ bzw. „transkulturelle“ Identitäten und Lebensentwürfe möglichen werden und damit als dritte Positionalität die transformative Positionalität des Transsiders entsteht. / Migration is one of the most prominent and formative issues of our time. In this ethnography, the analytical gaze is trained on the actors of (guest work) migration, specifically on multi-generational families in the interwoven transnational migration space of Turkey-Germany. The focus is on their identity processes, experiences of inclusion and exclusion, and empowerment practices not only during the ‚guest work‘ phase, but also during the pre- and post-migration phases. In this study, migration is described in actor-centered fashion through the close participant-observation of concrete social actions embedded in the families’ everyday lives as well as the narratives of the research subjects. Following the family members and their identities in motion, the field research constitutes a multi-local, multi-method, and multi-lingual ethnography. The main research subjects are two families from the eastern Anatolian Dersim region of Turkey with two specific characteristics. On the one hand, the families speak Zazaki as their original native language. On the other, they belong to the Alevi (faith) community, whereby one belongs to an Ocak family within the Alevi belief system while the other belongs to a Talip family. Migration and the identity work associated with it emerge in this family ethnography as a mentally, physically, and emotionally complex individual and social process that requires constant negotiation and change under conditions of diversity and intersectional difference. In its ambivalence, this process is both a challenge and an opportunity. In sum, identity work in the transnational migration and family space can also be described as empowerment and power-sharing work, as creative, interactive action in the „third space“ or „in-between space“ (BHABHA). Beyond the positionalities of the norm and the exception, the insider and the outsider (ELIAS/SCOTSON), „hybrid“ or „transcultural“ identities and life plans become possible, and the transformative third positionality of the transsider emerges.

Post-human Hospitality? Opportunities and risks with AI : An exploratative case study of AI in the hospitality industry of Värmland / Posthumanistiskt värdskap? Möjligheter och risker med AI : En explorativ fallstudie av AI inom besöksnäringen i Värmland

The thesis is an explorative case study focusing on the hospitality in the region of Värmland in Sweden as conceived by stakeholders in the hospitality industry. The purpose of this thesis is to expand the knowledge of how AI impacts the meaning of hospitality, by mapping how stakeholders within the different parts of the touristic system perceives and uses AI development of experiences and services that combine physical and digital spaces. Previous research in connection with AI and the hospitality industry laid the foundation for the result and analysis in the thesis. Selected theory dealt with tourism, hospitality, digitalisation, technological fixes and hybrid spaces. A hospitality perspective was selected to highlight the essence of human-to-human interaction, while also including how AI can influence interaction and services in physical and digital spaces, going beyond the focus on economical promises usually taken in tourism studies of AI. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with stakeholders of the hospitality industry in Värmland. The interview guides were based on the previous research and theoretical framework, which aided the process of gathering relevant empirical data from respondents of the different stakeholder groups, thus, contributing adequate answers to the research questions. With these means it was possible to see and map the different perspectives on what effects AI has on hospitality. The conclusion shows that the hospitality industry in Värmland is gradually exploring AI, with only a few stakeholders actively involved in projects with AI. There is a significant interest due to AI's potential to improve efficiency and create new offerings, but limited financial and human resources especially for the many small businesses in the region, along with a lacking mature state of AI hinder widespread adoptions. Stakeholders believe that AI will align with tourist needs, impacting power dynamics between tourists and destinations. AI is expected to paradoxically affect hospitality by potentially increasing or decreasing human interactions, with tourists increasingly becoming producers of their own experiences. Tourists generally have a neutral stance on AI in hospitality, preferring its use in information gathering and travel planning rather than as the experience itself. Human interaction remains highly valued, suggesting AI will rather enhance than replace it, leading to a setting of post-human hospitality. Looking ahead, stakeholders approach AI cautiously, acknowledging the need to address data privacy, regulation, and power dynamics. They see opportunities in AI but remain wary of ethical and societal implications.

The project solves a multifunctional Duma building in a vacant lot, contemplated the construction site is located in Carlsbad, in the street Vyhlíce. This is a protected site spa. Part of the project's layout and structural design of the house. It is a six-storey house with an attic and a basement floor. It is designed as a free-standing in the gap as the final house. The layout is divided into two complete units with their own input. There are spaces for business and residential units for permanent housing. Part of the living area are also room house equipment. Inputs to both parts are wheelchair accessible. The house is not wheelchair The house is designed as a brick building of brick masonry Porotherm the module dimensions of 250 (125) mm with reinforced concrete ceilings. Roofed by a hipped roof. The house is located on a private plot of 519 m2 built-up area of 221 m2. The land is gently sloping. The main orientation of the building to the cardinal's east and west. The south wall is adjacent to the neighboring house.
