The Apocalypse will be Televised: Representations of the Cold War on Network Television, 1976-1987

Underwood, Aubrey 01 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation examines how the major television networks, in conjunction with the Reagan administration, launched a lingering cloud of nuclear anxiety that helped to revive the Cold War during the 1980s. Placed within a larger political and cultural post-war context, this national preoccupation with a global show-down with the Soviet Union at times both hindered and bolstered Reagan’s image as the archetypal conservative, cowboy President that could free America from its liberal adolescent past now caustically referred to as “the sixties.” This stalwart image of Reagan, created and carefully managed by a number of highly-paid marketing executives, as one of the embodiment of peaceful deterrence, came under attack in the early 1980s when the “liberal” Nuclear Freeze movement showed signs of becoming politically threatening to the staunch conservative pledging to win the Cold War at any cost. And even if the nuclear freeze movement itself was not powerful enough to undergo the Herculean task of removing the President in 1984, the movement was compassionate enough to appeal to a mass audience, especially when framed in narrative form on network television. In the early 1980s, debates over the possibility of nuclear war and other pertinent Cold War related issues became much more democratized in their visibility on the network airwaves. However, the message disseminated from the networks was not placed in an educational framework, nor did these television productions clarify complicated nuclear issues such as nuclear winter theory and proliferation. I argue this renewed network attention on nuclear issues was not placed in an historical framework and likely confused American viewers because it routinely exposed audiences to both fact and fiction, undifferentiated at the level of the mass media.

Another way of defining NPR is that it is the processing of scenes, images or videos into artwork, generating scenes, images or videos that can have the visual appeal of pieces of art, expressing the visual and emotional characteristics of artistic styles. This dissertation presents a new method of NPR for stylization of images and videos, based on a typical artistic expression of the Northeast region of Brazil, that uses colored sand to compose landscape images on the inner surface of glass bottles. This method is comprised by one technique for generating 2D procedural textures of sand, and two techniques that mimic effects created by the artists using their tools. It also presents a method for generating 21 2D animations in sandbox from the stylized video. The temporal coherence within these stylized videos can be enforced on individual objects with the aid of a video segmentation algorithm. The present techniques in this work were used on stylization of synthetic and real videos, something close to impossible to be produced by artist in real life / Renderiza??o N?o Fotoreal?stica (NPR) ? uma classe de t?cnicas que almejam reproduzir t?cnicas art?sticas, tentado expressar sentimentos e emo??es nas cenas renderizadas, dando um aspecto de que foram feitas "manualmente".

Le cinéma français en Chine - diffusion, réception et influences (1897-1937) / French cinema in China - diffusion, reaction and influence (1897-1937) /

Huang, Lin 15 January 2016 (has links)
In Chinese cinema, shadow puppetry theatre and magic lantern have long been their ancient form of storytelling and entertainment. By the late 19th century French cinema was present in China, whereby their 'new born occidental entertainment' with their particular techniques and artistic characteristics was accepted. The following study attempts to discover, classify, analyze and unify little-known historical documents; in order to demonstrate the developmental process of cinema in China, especially the diffusion of the French cinema, and its reception by the Chinese public. This analysis is conducted from between 1897 up to the end of the Manchurian war in 1937 - How, as an artistic production and a cultural ambassador pass beyond his national borders influencing the Chinese cinema, as well as the Chinese society? This question involves a thorough study of the origins of the Chinese cinema, exploring some specific features of the Chinese culture.

Film : a supplementary aid in teaching adults about HIV/AIDS in Igueben (Nigeria)

Ovbiebo, Osaigbovo Matthew 11 1900 (has links)
This study explored film as a supplementary aid in teaching adults about HIV/AIDS in the Igueben area of Edo State (Nigeria). It drew on the theory and practice of film to enhance the awareness of HIV/AIDS campaign strategies in ways that are not possible with other teaching aids. The findings of the study supported the literature, which indicates that unlike film, reading materials are not accessible to illiterate adults in rural communities. Two hundred (200) participants were used in the first approach (quantitative), while fifteen (15) illiterate adults were purposively selected from the area to participate in the second approach (qualitative). The research was undertaken within an interpretivist framwork in the sense that it was a communal process informed by participating illiterate adults, and was sensitive to the role of context (Alvermann, D.E., & Mallozzi, C.A. 2010). The study confirmed the role of film, particularly Nigerian movies, in promoting information and education on HIV/AIDS. The findings highlighted the need for on-going education about HIV/AIDS and its treatment, especially among the rural illiterate. The study, in summary established that the programmes offered by HIV/AIDS organisers (governmental and nongovernmental) would be more effective if film is included in the campaign against the disease. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / D. Vztah počítačové hry a její audiovizuální předlohy / The relationship between a computer game and its audiovisual pattern

Šírová, Tereza January 2012 (has links)
Diploma thesis The Relationship between the Computer Game and its Audiovisual Pattern deals with the similarities and differences between the computer games and audiovisual works. The thesis presents some theories reflecting different points of view to the influence and blending of these media forms. Those theories are the base for a suggestion of typology of games and movies adaptations that were made according to a pattern. In each of three suggested categories, there are mentioned some particular examples of computer games that were inspired by movie or series and also examples of movies that were inspired by computer game. The final chapter is a case study which compares the computer game Lost: Via Domus to its audiovisual pattern - series Lost.

dis.PLAY - Center for the Art of Moving Images. A Film Center for Washington, D.C.

Torres-Barreto, Jose Antonio 10 March 2006 (has links)
This thesis explores how a displayed image and architecture interact together. This manifesto is analogically explored using parts of the human body such as the eyeballs as a structural analysis for the buildings with a projection of the cornea, the pupil, the retina, the optic nerves and the brain. This analysis follows a sequential order of capturing light, transcribing light into image, and displaying such image onto a screen. Both, the image and architecture are created parallel to each other respectively when conceiving an architectural idea in order to develop the idea into a building and then perceiving the architecture from such building. These steps are a cinematic approach using a video camera to record an experience of movement through the journey of a metro ride. This video is one of the tools used to edit an urban tissue of downtown Washington, D.C. The project becomes a Center for the Art of Moving Images exposing vectors of movements through its architecture. The building is manifested in a three-dimensional design where the site provides a sunken plaza 60 ft below street level perceived as a new floor in the city. The underground metro station transitions to the street surface through the use of this plaza in a very harmonious way. The result is a visual depth parallel to the perspectives perceived in movies where you see beyond the surface of the screen and in this case, beyond the surface of the city. / Master of Architecture

Multimodalitet i NO-undervisningen : Varierad undervisning ur ett elev- och lärarperspektiv / Multimodality in the Science Education : Varied teaching from a student and teacher perspective

Johansson, Sanna January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to highlight the potential of varied teaching through the multimodalities of image, sound, movies, and movement in the science classroom for pupilsand teachers at the primary level, when teaching about the circulatory system. The study was based on a varied lesson series about the circulatory system, after which the students got to fill out a questionnaire to describe which teaching method was the most enjoyable and the most educative. They also got to write what was good and bad about each respective teaching method. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were then conducted with 14 pupils and two teachers. The result that this study generated from a teacher's perspective was that varied teaching and multimodal teaching methods are part of the school's compensatory mission. It is thus a way of supporting students in need of extra support or alternative ways of learning. The teachers felt that there was a broad range of material, such as lesson plans and ideas, and that this was not an issue, but the focus must be on how to work with the existing material that is available. The students were generally positive regarding each included teaching methods but felt that the most enjoyable teaching method was movies and that they learned the most from moving their bodies. The characteristics that could be distinguished for the students' investment in the education were active participation, variety in the teaching and amusement.
