Deschênes, Roxanne 08 1900 (has links)
Religion is a universal cultural phenomenon that is central to anthropology, yet a lack of theoretical agreement about its definition and origin is obvious when comparing dictionaries and introductory handbooks. Hypotheses addressing this question have been available for the past two or three decades in the field of psychobiology, and this thesis explores whether anthropological theories of religion can offer a definition and explanations as to the origin of religion that are, at least in part, in agreement with psychobiology. First, a summary of the hypotheses offered by psychobiology is presented. This will serve as an analytical benchmark with which to compare anthropological theories on religion. Two such theories are summarised and analysed in terms of their proposed definition of religion, their universal elements, and their theoretical bases, that of Sir Edward Burnett Tylor ([1874] 1889) and that of Clifford Geertz ([1966] 2010). Both are influential theories, but have opposing theoretical foundations. The analysis shows that only Tylor’s theory supports the hypothesis of this thesis, which states that some anthropological conceptions and explanations of religion are compatible. Regardless the discrepancy between all the analysed sources, these could be conciliated, in a preliminary model of the nature and the evolutionnary roots of religion.

Kontrastivní studie hyperboly v češtině a angličtině. Korpusová studie / A contrastive study of hyperbole in Czech and English. A corpus-based study

Macháčková, Anežka January 2012 (has links)
The aim of this study is to compare and contrast the use of hyperbole or exaggeration in spoken Czech and English language. The research is based on comparative approach to two samples accounting for 100 hyperbolic instances in Czech and 100 instances of hyperbole in English. The Czech sample has been randomly excerpted from the oral part of the Czech National Corpus ORAL2008, whereas the English sample has been randomly excerpted from the "spoken context-govern" and "spoken demographic" sections of The British National Corpus. The two samples are subject to analysis. Firstly, the formal realization of hyperbole is examined. Secondly, the occurrences are classified semantically (quantitative versus qualitative hyperbole) and, thirdly, the lexico-semantics is examined (hyperbolic source domains). By this, the present study tests the hypothesis of universal hyperbolic source domains by examining the situation in Czech and English. Finally, the occurrence of conventionalized instances of hyperbole as opposed to creative instances of hyperbolic nonce-usages is examined. Last but not least, it is the aim of this study to provide the overall frequency figures of hyperbole in both languages.

Le premier commentaire de Boèce à l’Isagogè de Porphyre : introduction, traduction et commentaire / Boethius’ first commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge : introduction, translation and commentary

Huh, Min-Jun 30 November 2013 (has links)
Our thesis in two volumes aims to give an original French translation of Boethius’s first commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge based on the critical edition published by Samuel Brandt in 1906. Actually, Boethius commentary deals with the Latin translation of Marius Victorinus and not, as the title seems to suggest, with the greek treatise of Porphyry. The first volume contains a general introduction divided into four parts : a critical studies of the secondary sources; the material sources of the Boethian first commentary on Isagoge; the Boethian analysis of Porphyry’s three questions about universals; and Marius Victorinus’ Isagoge and the Latin rhetorical tradition. The thesis we defend in the introduction can be summarized as follows : Porphyry’s lost commentary on Categories (Ad Gedalium) may have been the main source of the first Boethian commentary on Isagoge ; historically, the three questions on universals had been related to the Porphyrian refutation of anti-Aristotelian position of Plotinus ; and, unlike Victorinus which considers Isagoge as an introduction to Cicero’s Topica, Boethius adopts the Neoplatonic perspective which makes it an introduction to Aristotle’s Categories. This introduction is followed by the French translation accompanied by the latin text edited by Brandt. Our commentary on the Boethian treatise is developed in the second volume, which also contains an original French translation of Ammonius’ commentary on Porphyry’s Isagoge and a full refutation of the thesis supported by Brandt in his prolegomena to his critical edition about the textual parallels attested in the Boethian and Ammonian commentaries on Isagoge (cf. appendix 1 and 2).

[en] THE END OF EXPLANATIONS: HOW IS A RULE LINKED WITH ITS APPLICATIONS: THE PROBLEM OF INFINITE DETERMINATION IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE SECOND WITTGENSTEIN / [pt] O FIM DAS EXPLICAÇÕES: COMO UMA REGRA SE LIGA COM SUAS APLICAÇÕES: O PROBLEMA DA DETERMINAÇÃO INFINITA NA FILOSOFIA DO SEGUNDO WITTGENSTEIN

CAMILA APARECIDA RODRIGUES JOURDAN 21 July 2005 (has links)
[en] The dissertation relates second Wittgenstein s considerations on following rules with his criticism about the extensional treatment of the infinite as actual totality. In the first chapter, a presentation of Wittgenstein s criticism of the mentalist solution pattern for the determination of the meaning is followed by an account of what is taken to be the heart of the Private Language Argument. On that basis, it is argued that the communitarianist solution, formulated in terms of the confirmation of an independent pattern, cannot be consistently attributed to Wittgenstein. In the second chapter, the historical antinomy between the infinite as potential and the infinite as actual is introduced. Some aspects of Cantor s and Dedekind s approaches, as well as Wittgenstein s criticism of those, are also presented. In the third chapter, the connection between Wittgenstein s criticism of the treatment of the infinite as extensional actuality and the question of linguistic generality is explored, and the normative character attributed by Wittgenstein to mathematical propositions is highlighted. It is shown that, according to Wittgenstein, the conceptual difference between finite and infinite expresses the difference between empirical and grammatical contexts. The infinite as expression of generality could not be treated as susceptible to extensional description without bringing about confusion, and it should, therefore, be thought of solely in a normative context, as a rule. The problem of the determination of a rule is thus retaken in the context of the discussion on mathematical proof, and the notion of surveyability is analysed. In the fourth chapter, the notion of family resemblances is considered. The central aspects of Wittgenstein s approach to the problem of the determination of a rule - the abandonment of extensionality and the univocality of meaning - are emphasised. Instead of classes or elements primarily determining the relationship among the instances of a rule, the relationship itself would constitute such instances, and such internal relationship would be established by linguistic usage itself. Finally, in the conclusion, a general reconsideration of what was discussed is carried out, starting from the relationships between circularity and generality.

La dimension philosophique et théologique de la pensée de Jérôme de Prague / The Philosophical and Theological Dimension of the Thought of Jerome of Prague / Filosofická a teologická dimenze myšlení Jeronýma Pražského

Pavlíček, Ota 30 October 2014 (has links)
This dissertation is the first thorough analytical study of the philosophical and theological aspects of the thought of Jerome of Prague († 1416), based on all the known extant texts of the significant Czech philosopher, master of arts of the universities of Paris, Cologne, Heidelberg and Prague and a friend and colleague of the church reformer Jan Hus. The work deals with individual philosophical and theological topics present in Jerome’s opus, explains his ideas and places them into the context of the history of medieval thought. In this frame, the work newly illustrates hitherto only partially known doctrines of this representative of the reformist current at the Prague University at the turn of the fifteenth century and tries to provide insight into Jerome’s thought, also on the basis of a series of new findings concerning Jerome’s ideas and his ancient and medieval sources. Apart from Jerome’s thought, the work pays attention to and clarifies more profoundly some of the related topics, for example the question of representation of the Trinity by the shield of faith. This dissertation also opens certain new questions, for example the topic of the influence of the Oxford philosophical successors of John Wyclif (such as Robert Alyngton) on the doctrines of the masters at the Prague University. An additional contribution of this thesis to a better knowledge of the Czech and European cultural heritage is the editio princeps of a quaestio of Štěpán of Páleč, Utrum omne dependens habeat esse aeternum in prima causa, accompanied by a doctrinal interpretation.

M. Armstrong in his work What is a Law of Nature?, published in 1983. In that text, Armstrong shows the insufficiency of the regularty theory and, then, proceeds to develop his own theory, which is able to answer to several of the regularity theory's outstanding issues. In the first chapter of this work, we present (1.1) the naive regularity theory, as well as the critiques that it received from Armstrong and other authors. Afterwards (1.2), we present three suggestions to sophisticate that theory, which are not successful to address the difficulties found in its naive version. Therefore, the regularity theory is refuted, and a new theory of laws is needed. In the second chapter, we present, firstly (2.1), an assumption of Armstrong's theory of laws his realism about universals , and we see how it can be applied to a theory of laws. Afterwards (2.2), we present Armstrong's fundamental thesis: a law is a relation between universals and simultaneously an universal in itself, which regulates the behavior of particulars and generates uniformities in nature in virtue of the instaniation relation. We also show (2.3) how such theory makes it possible to deal with the difficulties faced by the regularity theory. In the third chapter, we evaluate the role of the concept of necessity in Armstrong's theory. Firstly (3.1), we deepen our understanding of the necessitation relation N, and, afterwards (3.2), we show that Armstrong rejects the thesis according to which laws are metaphisically necessary and advocates for their contingency. Therefore, the understanding of his theory is centered in the distinction between the nomic necessity asserted in his conception of laws, on one hand, and the metaphysic necessity of laws, which Armstrong denies, on the other / Este trabalho é um estudo sobre a teoria de leis da natureza proposta pelo filósofo australiano D. M. Armstrong em sua obra What is a Law of Nature?, publicada em 1983.

Efficiency and effectiveness of deep structure based subject indexing languages : PRECIS vs. DSIS

Biswas, Subal C. January 1988 (has links)
A 'Subject Indexing Language' (SIL) is an artificial language used for formulating names of subjects. Although classificationists have sought for universals in many fields of study such as, philosophy, biology, general systems theory, etc., the search for a deep structure of SILs formally began with Ranganathan's idea of 'absolute syntax' and was brought to the present by G. Bhattacharyya and D. Austin. Whereas Bhattacharyya's deep structure of SIL is primarily based on classificatory principles (parallel to 'absolute syntax'), the deep structure proposed by Austin has a linguistic connotation. The present study describes and compares two such deep structurebased SILs, viz., PRECIS (PREserved Context Index System) and DSIS (Deep Structure Indexing System), a recent computerized version of POPSI (POstulate-based Permuted Subject Indexing), developed by F. J. Devadason at Documentation Research and Training Centre, Bangalore, India. Both also belong to the category of SILs typified as 'string indexing' languages. The study involves: i) writing of a suitable DSIS index entry generation program, ii) using both PRECIS (in-house) and DSIS programs to index a collection of representative sample documents from the soft sciences, iii) analyzing and comparing their respective syntactic and semantic aspects in terms of both linguistic and classificatory principles, and iv) applying some measures of efficiency and effectiveness. It was realized that certain modifications in the existing DSIS string manipulation algorithms are necessary to make the program fully operational. Although, no attempts have been made to quantify the measures of effectiveness and efficiency as such, suggestions have been provided as to what these probably would be. Some indications of their searching difficulties for a prospective searcher have been put forward as well.

The mechanism of anticipation in language learning : studies and didactical prospective for the teaching of French as a second language

Vanleene, François 29 March 2013 (has links)
This study intends to decrypt experimentally the interpreting process in the learning of a second language such as French, by questioning the traditional concept of analytical decoding and by substituting it the principle of anticipation. Our hypothesis is that utterances are not understood through a continuous and chronological adding of signs, but is rather constructed from invariant procedures of identification of the meaning and from the recognition of structures and universal schemes. The first chapter prepares the ground for this research by introducing three essential theories which could explain the phenomenon of anticipation: the theories of Universal Grammar (Chomsky), of Enunciative and Predicative Operations (Culioli) and of General Semantics (Pottier). We discuss the various prospects brought by these theories and we relate them with the topic of our research. In the second chapter, we present the iconographic material we have conducted our experiment with, the advantages of which consist in being neutral, syntactically adjustable andinterpretable in the subjects’ native tongue as much as in the target language. We introduce the Chinese participants and the principles of our experiment, which consists in converting oral utterances to iconographic sequences. We present the linguistic features of the sentences we have used by the aid of the theories we reviewed in the first section. In our third chapter, we make the analysis of the 14 subjects’ productions by taking account of the nature of the chosen icons, the order in which they are selected and their placement in the sequences. These three parameters allow us to reveal various schemes of anticipation and to confirm the theory according to which comprehension is a process of reconstruction from conceptual, cognitive and linguistic knowledge. The last chapter sums the experiment up, summarize our conclusions and test them against the theories about language universals and invariants. It defines also some possible threads that can be followed in the field of language acquisition and which consider the role of anticipation.
