A qualitative study of honor-related violence and oppression from a gender and cultural perspective as well as break-up processes based on women's autobiographies

Beka, Blerina, Dahlin, Helena January 2022 (has links)
The intention of this qualitative study is to gain an in-depth understanding of how women break away from honor-related violence and oppression, and how they can be understood in relation to gender and honor-culture. This is done by analyzing the autobiographical text of six different young women describing their experiences of being victims of honor-related violence and oppression. The study shows that it isn't easy for young girls to get out of the oppression and violence. There are several different factors as to why some of them stay and don't seek help. Instead, they feel guilt. It is a long process for the girls, where they have to get past different stages. The last stage for the young woman is understanding, in order for her to heal and move on in life she has to understand what she has gone through and process it, and also reflect on it. This can lead to great sadness for the young woman, thoughts about why they stayed for that long and wasted their own life and time.

Mapping the past, present and future: an analysis of how integration through the body can "speak" to the issue of bullying

Mdena, Linda January 2015 (has links)
University of the Witwatersrand Department of Humanities Wits School of the Arts Drama for Life: (MADT) Master of Arts in Drama Therapy / The body has always fascinated me! As a classically trained dancer with a Physical Theatre background, I learnt to use my body as a means of expressing myself. I saw the body as a means to performance, but I believed there was more to the body than just being put on show. In University I learnt about and came to understand the mind-body connection (Plamer, 2009). This interested me and I began to search deeper, with the question that if the body and mind are connected, where are our human memories stored? I have always wondered what moves me and what moves the people around me… This research was a platform for me to look into the notion of the mind, body connection and memory. Through the use of story and movement, I began to consider bullying as a memory which the body and mind both experience. Through the research I focused on where the body had stored this experience and what were the effects of this stored memory (the aftermath). The rest of this paper unpacks my research and my findings working with a client centred approach. In this paper I speak back to the approach I took during the research process, using Laban’s 8 Effort actions, Lahad’s 6 Part Story Method and Whitehouse’s Authentic Movement as part of the integration process speaking back to bullying.

"Skräckblandad förtjusning" : True crime:s påverkan på rädsla att utsättas för våldsbrott / Mixed emotions : The impact of true crime on fear of violent crimes

Nguen, Vladyslava, Balija, Amra, Lindeberg, Alma January 2023 (has links)
This bachelor thesis aims to investigate how young women discuss the purposesbehind true crime consumption and how they describe the impact of true crimeconsumption has on their fear of violent crimes. Furthermore, the thesis aims toinvestigate in which ways young women depict the association between women’ssocialization processes and their fear of violent crime, in relation to true crimeconsumption. A qualitative approach has been applied and the thesis aims andresearch questions were answered with the help of focus groups. Reflexivethematic analysis constituted the method of analysis which resulted in threecentral themes. The first being The appeal of true crime. The main results of thistheme showed that the participants consume true crime content to gain anunderstanding of the perpetrators’ motives and actions, knowledge regardingwhich behaviors to adapt in order to avoid victimization, and entertainment. In thesecond theme, Factors that impact fear of crime, the participants discussed thattrue crime consumption impacted their fear of violent crime in diverse ways.Spatial- and temporal proximity to the cases being depicted in true crime contentwas a main factor that contributed to heightened fear. Furthermore, theparticipants connected true crime content to their own reality and their riskassessment in relation to victimization. The third theme was defined as Behaviorsas a consequence of true crime consumption. Results from this theme showed thatthe participants describe changes in their behavior as a consequence of their truecrime consumption. Mainly the behavioral changes consisted of protective andavoidant behavior.

Choosing the political path as a young woman? : A qualitative case study on young women's motivationsfor political invovlement in youth organisations and future career apsirations in politics.

Johansson, Rebecka January 2023 (has links)
Involvement in political youth organisations is explained in terms of social, moral-ideological,and career-driven incentives. However, previous studies have not examined women’smotivations. This single case study answers and explains why young women engage in politicalyouth organisations and which incitements drive them. The study also explains what youngwomen’s plans for a political career looks like and whether systematic patterns can be discerned.By using in-depth interviews, seven young women in the Swedish political youth party “SocialDemocratic Youth League of Sweden” (SSU), are interviewed. This analysis shows that womenare not primary driven by political career ambitions, instead social and moral-ideologicalincentives are the primary factors for their involvement. Young women perceive barriers topursuing a political career and would rather work in a “regular” profession in the future thanhave a political career.

Engagerad eller beroende? En kvalitativ studie om unga kvinnors träningsvanor

Friberg, Josefine, Sallander, Emma January 2014 (has links)
Background: The benefits of physical activity is often discussed, but too rarely the consequences when it becomes excessive. It creates a complex situation when exercise and being "healthy" is essentially seen as something positive. Young women today are exercising increasingly, and they have the highest probability of ending up in a risky behavior such as eating disorders, mental illness and exercise dependency. Aim: The aim of this study is to examine the underlying factors that can be identified for these young women who exercise more than recommended. Method: This study is qualitative in nature since we want to study why young women think, do and act in a certain way. The study was based on a hermeneutic approach as it is a research method in which interpretation is central. The method is used so we by understanding are able to interpret social expressions and other products of human consciousness. The empirical data is based on five semi-structured interviews with young women aged 19-25 years. Results: The study displays that the interviewed young women shows signs of exercise dependency. They also show signs of body fixation and a problematic relationship to diet. Thus, the young women need to be supported and made aware of the risks of overtraining causes and requires empowerment to gain power over their own lives. The findings show that there is much more to explore in the area, mainly the underlying factors for excessive exercise.

"I've never been forced to do anything, I've sometimes just ignored listening to myself" : A qualitative study on the role of pornography in teenage girls' sexual experiences

Johansson, Sofia, Thunell, Klara January 2021 (has links)
Young men and women growing up in Sweden today have to face several difficult issues regarding their sexuality, yet, it is rather unexplored how they navigate through them. Pornography, the focus of this study, is widely used by both young men and women. However, few studies are examining young people’s own narratives of their encounters with pornography. The aim of this study was therefore to explore young women’s experiences of pornography, as well as how they believe pornography affects both themselves and other adolescents in terms of sexuality and sexual experiences. Seven young women between the age of 17-18 were interviewed for this study and their answers were analyzed through thematic analysis. The results showed that the participants experienced a predominately negative effect of pornography on their sexual lives. Due to the participants’ feminist moral values, their pornography consumption caused them strong feelings of shame. Further, they all felt pressured to adopt a supporting role in sex and to perform in line with a pornographic script, thus compromising their opportunity to self-pleasure, ability to consent, and claim of sexual agency. It also became evident how difficult it is to navigate through the conflicting roles within a postfeminist media culture, with regard to feminism, heterosexual gender norms, and the strong ideal of being an “agent” in sex. The results highlight the need for social change rather than individualized responsibility, in the pursuit of every person’s right to sexual integrity and sexual self-determination.

Triggervarning på TikTok : TikToks påverkan på kroppsideal / Trigger warning on TikTok : TikTok´s impact on body ideals

Åkerblom, Mercie, Phulonkaew, Bea Thanyalak January 2023 (has links)
TikTok has become a popular platform in recent years, especially among young women. Previous research has shown that the use of social media, especially visual platforms such as TikTok, can affect the mental health of women. TikTok's algorithm floods users with targeted content that focuses on challenges and trends related to appearance changes through diet, exercise and beautification filters. For young women, this can lead to increased anxiety about the body and deteriorating mental health. This study aims to examine the content posted on TikTok and its potential impact on mental health. A quantitative survey was conducted to investigate young women aged 15-25 and their attitudes towards TikTok and body ideals. Through a qualitative thematic video analysis of the hashtag #bodypositivity, structures were identified for how body positivity is presented on the platform. The study has found both negative and positive effects of the application and the content the users are exposed to in relation to body positivity. It emerged that the hashtag #bodypositivity can sometimes be misused. Users have a certain degree of control over what content they consume, which affects their experience and feel of the platform. However, despite awareness of this, users sometimes find it difficult to distance themselves from negative influences and continue to expose themselves to content that affects them negatively.

Medias framställning av unga kvinnor i marginaliserade områden : En kritisk diskursanalys av medieporträtteringen av unga kvinnor i tre Stockholmsförorter

Karlsson, Mira January 2021 (has links)
Media’s representation of places and individuals shape public understanding of these places and of their residents, as well as shaping residents’ own understanding of their communities and themselves. Media discourse about marginalized areas is often male dominated and focused on violence and crime which has attracted much attention in previous research. The purpose of this dissertation has instead been to study media discourse about young women living in three marginalized suburban areas south of Stockholm. By studying which discourses about young women in these areas are (re)produced in media we can gain knowledge about the opportunities and obstacles young women face. The study is based upon a critical discourse analysis of a large empirical material of media texts, informed by theory on territorial stigmatization. The analysis has an intersectional perspective. The texts cover a wide range of topics, with three recurrent subdiscourses described: “owning one’s place”, “safety” and “otherness”. The results are in line with previous research in some respects, but also deviate in important ways. Young women in these texts are on one hand, not depicted as responsible for the problems often associated with marginalized areas, but on the other hand, are depicted as responsible for their parents’ integration. Resultaten följer i flera avseenden tidigare forskning, men avviker samtidigt i några viktiga aspekter.

Treatment outcomes of young patients with invasive breast cancer treated radically at Groote Schuur Hospital from 2013-2017: A single centre study

Tangane, Gomolemo 20 April 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Treatment outcomes of young patients with invasive breast cancer treated radically at Groote Schuur Hospital from 2013 to 2017: A single centre study Background: Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer- related deaths globally, and the commonest cancer in women under 40 years. There is currently a lack of data relating to treatment outcomes of young women with breast cancer particularly in low-and middle-income countries. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the treatment outcomes of young patients (under 40 years) treated radically for invasive breast cancer in a low-and middle-income setting. Settings: Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa Methods: A retrospective review of 101 women under 40 years, with invasive breast cancer treated radically, between 2013 and 2017 was conducted. Patient characteristics, tumour characteristics, disease stage, treatment, and follow-up were recorded. Primary objectives included evaluating overall and disease free survival, and analysing recurrence patterns and clinicopathological features. Results: The five-year overall and disease free survival for the entire cohort was 77% and 51%, respectively. Five-year overall survival by molecular subtype showed that Luminal A had the best survival, while triple negative breast cancer had the worst overall survival. Conclusion: Young women with breast cancer have poor survival outcomes despite early presentation. There is limited data regarding breast cancer treatment outcomes in patients under forty years.
