This is a study about adaptation, focusing on the first book in the series about Harry Potter and the movie version of the book. The study examines whether any of the characters change when the book is adapted to another type of medium. For example, are there any character traits that are revealed differently in the book versus the movie? The materials that have been used are works of reference, the first book about Harry Potter and also the film of the book. Some of the literature has already been read prior to the study but will still be needed as the study continues.By the end of the study there should be some results to be shown. The primary purpose of the study is to clarify the differences and similarities that can appear when a work is transferred, for example, from book to film.

Magiska dörrar och oväntade relationer : En adaptionsanalys av Det levande slottet / Enchanted doors and unforeseen relationships : An adaptation analysis of Howl’s moving castle.

This study is an adaptation analysis focusing on character portrayals in Studio Ghibli’s film Howl’s moving castle, which is based on a book of the same name, written by Diana Wynne Jones. Both the film and the book are discussed and analyzed to find differences and similarities between the two. The purpose of the paper is to identify the changes that have been made to the film adaptation in the form of characterizations. Through this study I have shown the media specific differences that have contributed to changes but also reported important similarities. The relationships between the characters have changed a lot to the film adaptation, many emotions appear more open in the film than they did in the book. Media specific differences lie behind much of this, through the filmmaker’s possibilities in the visual medium. The important narrative changes can be based on this, but also through Studio Ghibli’s choice to emphasize the war as a central part of the story. This paper can give light to the changes that take place when a work is being adapted into a different medium.

När sagan blir bilderbok –En adaptionsstudie av H.C. Andersens Den fula ankungen

Denna adaptionsstudie analyserar vad som händer med H.C. Andersens saga ‘’Den fulaankungen’’ när den adapteras till en bilderbok, genom att jämföra sagan i sagosamlingenSagor och berättelser 1835–45 (1982) med bilderboken Den fula ankungen (2020). Syftetmed analysen är att undersöka ändringar av innehåll och språk, vilket innehåll som har blivitillustrerat, samspelet mellan bild och text samt styrningen av adaptionen. Studien utgår frånen kvalitativ komparativ metod och använder sig av bland annat Göte Klingbergs fyraadaptionsformer och Ulla Rhedins bilderbokskoncept. Resultatet av analysen visar att saganhar adapterats till bilderboken genom att innehållet har komprimerats och kortats ner samtgenom att språket gjorts enklare och mer vardagligt. I bilderboken har de viktigastehändelserna blivit illustrerade och bilderna utgår för det mesta från textens beskrivningar.Analysen tyder på att det nya bilderboksformatet och anpassningar till yngre barn har styrtadapteringen.

Sweden´s representation in Utvandrarna and its adaptations : The image of Sweden in the Utvandrar-series / Sveriges representation i Utvandrarna och dess adaptioner : Bilden av Sverige i Utvandrarserien

This study is an adaptation analysis focusing on the portrayal of Sweden in Jan Troell´s film The Emigrants (1971) and Eric Poppe´s film The Emigrants (2021), which is based on the book by the same name, written by Vilhelm Moberg. Both the films and book are discussed and analyzed to find similarities and differences between them. The purpose of this paper is to identify the changes and similarities that have been made due to the different contexts of the adaptations and how they reflect the Swedish society in which they were released with the fallacies in contemporary adaptation theory that points out wrong assumptions about the similarities of this classic story.   All through this study I have shown the context specific attributes that have contributed to the differences between the contexts of the adaptations but also reported the similarities in the overall story. The context in the representation of Sweden has changed a lot between the different adaptations, many of them appear more clearly when you look closer at the time in Swedish society in which they were released. Context specific differences are behind much of this, through the adapter's interpretation of the source text. The representation of Sweden as a nation can be based on this, but also through Vilhelm Moberg´s, Jan Troell´s and Erik Poppe´s choice to emphasize specific societal problems as a central part of their interpretation. The fallacies in contemporary adaptation theory have shown that the assumptions about how The Emigrants have been adapted are in some cases incorrect. This paper can shed light on the changes and similarities that take place when a work is adapted into different time periods in a nation's history.

This thesis studies the film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining (US 1977) by Stanley Kubrick (US 1980). The focus of this study lies on Kubrick’s approach towards the settings and the characters. How can we study the role of the auteur in the adaptation process and the differences between source text and film adaptation? How can we understand King’s negative reaction to Kubrick’s ways of altering and differentiate the storytelling? The summary presents a discussion of what adaptations can create and what the process from source text to film looks like. This thesis contributes to adaptation studies and their discussions of media specificity.

For almost a century, Virginia Woolf has enchanted readers all over the world with her novel about the gender fluid and time travelling character Orlando. British director Sally Potter adapted Orlando into film in 1992, and her adaptation has since gained immense fame and a continuous presence in world cinema. Potter's Orlando has been the object of a great deal of scholarly interest. However, previous research has predominantly focused on questions of gender and sexuality. Considerably underdiscussed is the film's fascinating conception of time and space. This thesis therefore sets out to analyze Sally Potter's Orlando in order to demonstrate how time and space is shaped in the film.  Theories developed by George Bluestone and André Bazin form the theoretical framework of this thesis. Through a close reading of the film, this thesis demonstrates that Potter establishes an unconventional temporality and spatiality through constructing a nonlinear, often contradictory temporality conveyed through contrasts between the organic and the fantastic, the real and the fictitious. Furthermore, the analysis finds that spatiality in Potter's Orlando is presented as multidimensional, allowing certain characters the possibility to inhabit a "fluid spatiality". Through presenting the past and the present as fused, Potter's Orlando can be understood through the optics of Bluestone's concept of "the flux of time" and Henri Bergsons la durée réelle. Simultaneously, breaks in the narrative presented through intertitles can be read as representing Bergsons idea of l'étendu, while also establishing a tangible spatiality.
