Quando as mulheres estão no poder: ambiguidades, obscuridades e referências políticas em As Tesmoforiantes de Aristófanes / When women are in power: ambiguities, obscurities and political references in Aristophanes Thesmophoriazusae

Milena de Oliveira Faria 18 October 2010 (has links)
Between the plays with female protagonists Lysistrata (411b.C), Thesmophoriazusae (411 a.C) and Ecclesiazûsae (392 or 391) -, the second was the one that raised least interest with the critics of the 20th century. Until the 70s, the critics considered Thesmophoriazusae to be a comedy of minor literary value, because it didnt present a strong heroine, like Lysistrata, or a new ideia, like Praxagoras. The play was seen merely as a poor agglomeration of euripidean parodies. However, in later studies (like the one of Zeitlin (1981), for example) started to hint at other possible interpretations of this work, making it clear that the play was not as superficial as it might have seem to be at the first sight. Zeitlin, for example, explains that the parodies are not mere mockeries, but make an intersection of relation between male and female, between comic and tragic. Slater (2002) goes further and sees, in the representation of the female Assembly, other possibilities of interpretation, as possible references to the repression suffered by the Athenians in the period of 411. My aim, thus, is, through discussion of the problems that arise trying to determinate the precise date of the plays performance, to consider relative passages that could help establish a frame of historical facts, so that we can prove that Thesmophoriazusae is a play far more complex and that it is possible to interpret it accordingly.

CrÃtica da comÃdia As Vespas, de AristÃfanes, ao tribunal popular ateniense / Critical comedy The Wasps by Aristophanes, the Athenian popular court

ValdÃsio Vieira da Silva 13 September 2013 (has links)
Palavras-chave: As Vespas, AristÃfanes, Democracia, Tribunais, CleÃo. / This research of Master in Comparative Literature has for theme The portrait of judiciary institutions Athenian in comedy The Wasps, of Aristophanes. The approach of corruption in the judiciary institutions of the fifth century a. C., in The Wasps, highlight the artistic and political concerns of Aristophanes by preserving the values and integrity of democratic institutions of Athens. From the observation that proceeded Aristophanes in defense of the polis, the goal of this research is to analyze of the comedy The Wasps, centered on its principal: the prologue, the parodo, the agon, the parabasis, episodic scenes, the exodus and secondaries aspects: the educational, the political, the legal and the cultural. Aristophanes criticism came at a time when the Athenian society lived the splendor of democracy, reforms resulting from socio-political-economic Dracon, Solon, Cleisthenes and Pericles. In contrary pole of Athenian democracy, the politician and demagogue Cleon live, in the caricature comic, like a tyrant or an agent of divine king pre-classical Greece, which was the absolute master in society. Aristophanes covers all these aspects of Athenian life in two basic parts comedy: the first, going from verse 1 to verse 1010, relates to the conduct of manic of Filocleon (âWhich loves Cleonâ) by courts, and the attempt of his son, Bdelicleon (âWhich hates Cleonâ), to reeducating him; and the second, going from verse 1010 to verse 1535, concerned the social reintegration of FilocleÃo in Athenian life. Both parties of comedy are devoted, therefore, not only to criticize the conduct personal and functional of Filocleon, but invite the Athenian society to preserve its institutions or the functions of democratic power: the People's Assembly, the Council of Five Hundred and the Courts. Keywords: The Wasps, Aristophanes, democracy, Courts, Cleon.

The main purpose of this research is the analysis of the pederasty practiced in Athens during the fifth and at the beginning of the fourth century B.C. To do so we have been studying as sources the Plato s dialogues Lysis, the Symposium and Phaedrus, and the comedy the Clouds by Aristophanes, in order to compare the way the relationship between the erastes and eromenos figured on this period. In this paper we use the concepts of imaginary and identities, which have been widely discussed by historiography since the last two decades of the twentieth century, taking part in this discussion and applying it in our studies. Beyond showing the importance of the pederastic relationships for the formation of the future Athens citizen, we emphasize the main characteristics of the pederasty in Athens based on the readings of Plato and Aristophanes.

A arte de Aristófanes: estudo poético e tradução d\'As rãs / The art of Aristophanes: translation and poetical study of Frogs

Tadeu Bruno da Costa Andrade 07 November 2014 (has links)
This dissertation intends to contribute to the study of the poetics of Ancient Comedy. It analyses how the play Frogs employs generic conventions, and presents a translation into Portuguese, so that readers who have no knowledge of Ancient Greek can access the debate. All formal elements in Ancient Comedy (structure, plot, characters, elocution, metre and spectacle) seem to be defined by three aspects: physicality, accumulation and discontinuity. Out of the conjunction of these traits emerges Ancient Comedy\'s distinctive effect: the feeling of connection, freedom, fulfilment and satisfaction. Another function of fifth and early fourth-century Attic Comedy was to comment and influence Athens\' politics. The plot of Ancient Comedy is not strictly organical, and its coherence relies on the pervasive themes and images of a play, which make themselves known especially in the parabasis and the reiteration of words with similar stems and meaning. In Frogs, these themes are good birth, moral virtue and poetry, which Aristophanes interconnects. The poet seems to sacrifice a little of comic satisfaction in order to stress the exhortative character of the play, which recommends the choice of good leaders and the end of both civil strife and war against the Peloponnesians. At last, the dissertation analyses translations of Aristophanes\' plays into Portuguese, and proposes how the traits identified in the first part can be made visible in Portuguese.

Ridicule Reversed: The Failure of Aristophanes' Mockery and its Ironic Inspiration

Costa, Natalie 01 January 2010 (has links)
An appreciation for the satire inherent in Aristophanes' Greek comedies Lysistrata, Women in Parliament and Women Celebrating the Thesmophoria is integral to understanding its ironic impact on modem day feminist movements. Using political events in the 21 st century, we can see how Aristophanes' mockery of the agency of women outside of the oikos, or the domestic space, has been challenged and defeated. I will support my ideas using the plethora of scholarly research I have consulted during my exploration of the works of Aristophanes. This research includes articles and books from authors such as David Cohen, Martine De Marre, Helene Foley, David Halperin, Froma I. Zeitlin and Gonda Van Steen. Furthermore, I will identify instances in Aristophanes' plays where his ridicule is most evident.

Edition, traduction et commentaire des Grenouilles d’Aristophane / An edition, translation and commentary of Aristophanes’ Frogs

Daviet, Anne-Laure 23 November 2013 (has links)
This work consists of an edition and commentary of the Frogs of Aristophanes, a comedy performed in 405 BC and a second time the following year. In it, Aristophanes shows the descent to the Underworld of Dionysos as he searches for the poet Euripides, and the latter’s contest with Aeschylus over tragic supremacy.. This edition contains a general introduction replacing both performances of the play in their historical, ideological and literary frame, and showing how immediate context – mainly the performance of Euripides’ Bacchae and his and Sophocles’ death – influenced the play’s structure and themes. It also shows the nature and causes of the revisions that Aristophanes made between the first and the second performance. The central part of the introduction analyses the plot in a mostly linear way, showing how Aristophanes uses the traditional narratives of catabasis and initiatic journey in the first part of the play, and how, in the second part, he appropriates and criticises the sophists’ theories of language in order to oppose Aeschylus and Euripides and consider the role of theatre in the city. One chapter is dedicated to hypotheses concerning the original stage performance, and another to the transmission of the text between Antiquity and modern times. The line-by-line commentary preoccupies itself with matters of textual criticism, vocabulary, grammar, metric, performance and intertextuality. The text is completed by a critical apparatus that reports the readings of four of the oldest mediaeval manuscripts (and some others when the need arises) and an original French translation.

The heuristic value of Aristophanes\' Clouds for the History of Education.

Tsuruda, Maria Amalia Longo 14 August 2007 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to show that the comedy Clouds (423 b. C.) by Aristophanes has a heuristic value to the graduation students in Education, i. e., that this play allows a text comparative work in order to form a complex scene of the Athenian education at Aristophanes time. It consists of two parts, the first one shows the play study and its possible relations with the philosophy teaching at Athens and the second one is the report of the work whit graduation students, during two Experimental Course. The methodology used is founded in three cornerstones, the bibliographical research, the textual analysis and the experimental application in class. The conclusive evaluation of this work shows that The Clouds has a highly heuristic character and the use in classrooms has highly satisfactory results.
