Vértiz Osores, Ricardo Iván 15 October 2013 (has links)

Creating Community in Isolation: the History of Corpus Christi’s Molina Addition, 1954-1970

Gurrola, Moisés A. 12 1900 (has links)
“Creating Community in Isolation: The History of Corpus Christi’s Molina Addition, 1954-1970” examines the history of the Molina Addition in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas, and its serving district, the West Oso Independent School District, from 1954 to 1970. Specifically, this essay begins with an analysis of the elite-driven campaign to annex the blighted Molina Addition in September and October 1954. The city intended to raze the neighborhood and develop middle-class homes in place of the newly annexed neighborhood. Following the annexation of the Molina Addition, African American and ethnic Mexican residents initiated protracted struggles to desegregate and integrate schools that served their area, the West Oso Independent School District, as detailed in the chapter, “The West Oso School Board Revolution.” The chapter examines the electoral “revolution” in which Anglo rural elites were unseated from their positions on the school board and replaced by African American and ethnic Mexican Molina Addition residents. The third chapter, “Building Mo-Town, Texas,” focuses on residents’ struggle to install indoor plumbing, eliminate pit privies, construct paved roads, and introduce War on Poverty grants to rehabilitate the neighborhood. This chapter also offers a glimpse into the social life of Molina youth during the 1960s.

Representaciones sociales, prensa, inmigración y escuela. El caso de Son Gotleu

Vecina Merchante, Carlos 14 November 2008 (has links)

Imagining the Afro-Uruguayan Conventillo: Belonging and the Fetish of Place and Blackness

Sztainbok, V. 08 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis explores the symbolic place occupied by a racialized neighbourhood within the Uruguayan national imaginary. I study the conventillos (tenement buildings) of two traditionally Afro-Uruguayan neighbourhoods in Montevideo, Barrio Sur and Palermo. These neighbourhoods are considered the cradle of Afro-Uruguayan culture and identity. The conventillos have been immortalized in paintings, souvenirs, songs, and books. Over the years most of the residents were evicted due to demolitions, which peaked during Uruguay’s military dictatorship (1973-1984). I address the paradox of how a community can be materially marginalized, yet symbolically celebrated, a process that is evident in other American nations (Brazil, Colombia, etc.). I show how race, class, and gender are entangled in folkloric depictions of the conventillo to constitute a limited notion of blackness that naturalizes the relationship between Afro-Uruguayans, music, sexuality, and domestic work. The folklorization of the space and it residents is shown to be a “fetishization” which enhances the whiteness of the national identity, while confining the parameters of black citizenship and belonging. Utilizing a methodology that draws on cultural geography, critical race, postcolonial, and feminist theory, my dissertation analyzes the various ways that the Barrio Sur/Palermo conventillo has been imagined, represented, and experienced. Specifically, I examine 1) autobiographical, literary and popular (media, songs) narratives about these neighbourhoods; 2) the depiction of the conventillo by a prominent artist (Carlos Páez Vilaró); 3) spatial practices; 4) the performance of a dancer who emerged from the conventillo to become a national icon (the Carnival vedette Rosa Luna); and 5) interviews with nine key informants. My analysis focuses on how bodies, subjects, and national belonging are constituted through relations to particular spaces. By foregrounding the “geographies of identity” (Radcliffe and Westwood, 1996, p. 27), I show that the symbolic celebration of black space goes hand in hand with material disavowal. This study thus connects the imagining of a local, racialized space to how national belonging is constituted and experienced.

La culture afro-vénézuelienne comme mécanisme de résistance et d'intégration dans les quartiers populaires de caracas : Etude de la fête de la Saint Jean-Baptiste / Afrovenezuelian culture as a mecanism of resistance and integration in the barrios of Caracas : study of the San Juan Fiesta

Verger, Émilie 18 December 2012 (has links)
Venezuela is a country with an important cultural diversity. The population has Indigenous, African and European origins, though this diversity has long been ignored. Since the beginning of the 2000's, within the political process of the Bolivarian Revolution led by President Hugo Chavez, the cultural diversity of Venezuelans has begun to be recognized. The objective has been to define and reinforce national identity based on cultural diversity. Afro-Venezuelans have been victims of discrimination. At the beginning of the twentieth century, many descendants of African slaves migrated from the countryside to urban Caracas. The great majority settled in barrios and lived in a situation of exclusion and marginalization and, in addition, lost a great deal of their references. At the beginning of the eighties, popular culture and Afro-Venezuelan traditions appeared as a way to construct a new identity. Afro-Venezuelan cultural groups decided to reinterpret a traditional popular festival in these barrios, the Festival of San Juan. By the study of this festival, from 2006 to 2012, we studied how the actions of Afro-Venezuelan cultural groups can contribute to affirm and recognize Afro-Venezuelan identity and lead to an increase in social cohesion and integration of the population in these barrios.

Gutterres, Anelise dos Santos January 2010 (has links)
This thesis intends to establish how the representation of “morada”, in moderncontemporary cities, from the perspective of an ethnographic experience affects the family groups and networks of urban middle classes. The thesis discusses urban planning, construction and destruction of private residential properties, specially including several visual representations of the “morada”. It aims to ponder the “morada” space, as an object changing in a time, in the neighborhoods of Tristeza, Rio Branco, Floresta and Petrópolis, all in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, and San Telmo, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Searching the data and image collection gathered in an ethnographic method, the thesis discusses the transformation the cities go through, from the perspective of the biographic narratives and social trajectories of the members of those different ethnographic contexts, from the perspective of memory and ethnographic duration.

Paredes, Edesmin Wilfrido Palacios January 2007 (has links)
