Samhällskunskapens ekonomiska norm / The Economic Norm in Civic Education

Cimmerbeck, Emma January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to expose the economic norm on which the teaching rests to see if the governing documents and teaching materials give students the nuanced and multifaceted picture of economics that social studies and the Swedish school require. Based on the international research situation's indication of the neoclassical and market liberal norm as governing, the study started to take shape in dialogue with these results. With the help of Norman Fairclough's (2015) critical discourse analysis, curricula, and teaching materials for social studies were analyzed and interpreted. The result indicates that a neoclassical and market-liberal discourse is enormously prominent in social studies. The consequences are, among other things, that students' ability to achieve the overall goal and purpose of social studies is significantly hindered. In addition, the results show that the students were raised ideologically in line with a market-liberal discourse without the opportunity to take their ethical positions on the matter.

Effects of Child Development Associate Credential System 2.0 on Candidate Success Rates

Davis, Travis J. 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to identify the impact of process changes that have been made to the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, which is a beginning early childhood teacher credential that focuses on competency based standards widely seen as necessary for early childhood teachers to possess. The process in which early childhood teachers receive their credential changed in 2013 with the implementation of CDA credential 2.0. Changes included taking a computerized exam and the implementation of a professional development specialist conducting an on-site classroom observation. In order to determine the impact that CDA 2.0 had on teacher credentialing success rates, a mixed-method sequential design was employed. First, existing data sets of success rates from a national scholarship program were reviewed. Following, interviews with CDA credential seekers were conducted. Findings revealed that while candidate success rates increased for those receiving CDA credentials under the 2.0 system, the actual number of candidates receiving scholarships to pursue the CDA credential through the national scholarship program decreased. Qualitative analysis of the semi-structured interviews indicated that three areas that impacted CDA 2.0 candidate success rates were the professional education programs and instructors, the CDA Exam, and Professional Development Specialists. This is the first research study to examine the CDA credential process. The findings demonstrate that the 2.0 system provides candidates with necessary supports to be successful. A significant question arising out of the data is how a determination is made to issue a credential. Before QRIS and public policy initiatives employ more efforts to professionalize the field of early childhood – primarily through the CDA credential – the process by which one obtains a credential should be more thoroughly examined.

Využití dichotomie My versus Oni v předvolebních projevech Joe Bidena a Donalda Trumpa z roku 2020 / Utilization of the Us versus Them Dichotomy in 2020 Campaign Speeches of Joe Biden and Donald Trump

Pýcha, Jaroslav January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to analyze the camping speeches of the two major candidates running for President of the Unites States in the 2020 general election and to inspect the ways in which both the candidates utilize the Us versus Them dichotomy. In doing so, the thesis provides a critique of the texts produced by the candidates and seeks to unveil their ideological motivation. As categorizing entities has a profound effect on the audience and their perception of reality, the goal is not only to unveil what entities the candidates discuss, but also to determine how they classify these entities. In addition, the strategies used by both the candidates to achieve entity evaluation are compared in order to contrast their rhetorical styles. The theoretical part of the thesis overviews concepts related to the construction of group identities and other ways of reproducing ideology in discourse. Furthermore, Hasan's approach to text analysis, which is employed in the analytical part, is introduced. A brief biography of both the candidates and a description of the US presidential election system are included as well. The analytical part is composed of Critical Discourse Analyses of selected topical segments from campaign speeches of Donald Trump and Joe Biden. Special focus is dedicated to the strategies the...

: A Critical Discourse Analysis of Three Countries’ Curriculum with Focus on the Subject Art

Ekeroth, Eva January 2022 (has links)

Fractional Oxidation State Control of Three-Way Catalyst with Stoichiometric Spark-Ignition Natural Gas Engines incorporating Cylinder Deactivation

Yunpeng Xu (14266550) 15 December 2022 (has links)

A novel two-loop estimation and control strategy is proposed to reduce the natural gas (NG) spark-ignition (SI) engine tail pipe emissions, with focus on the outer loop development. In the outer loop, an fractional oxidation state (FOS) estimator consisting of a three-way catalyst (TWC) model and an extended Kalman-filter is used to estimate the real-time TWC's FOS, and a robust controller is used to control the first-half TWC's FOS by manipulating the desired engine lambda (i.e., air–fuel equivalence ratio; lambda=1 at stoichiometry). The outer loop estimator and controller are combined with an industry-production baseline inner loop controller, which controls the engine $\lambda$ based on the desired lambda value. This novel two-loop control strategy reduces more CH4 and NOx emissions over no-outer-loop control strategy and the conventional two-loop control strategies through simulation.

Engine with and without fuel cut-off are both investigated. Although fuel cut-off brings better fuel economy, it also over-oxidizes the TWC during fuel cut events, which makes the FOS-based controller's competence in NOx reduction over non-FOS-based controllers less significant. By comparing simulation results with and without fuel cut-off, it shows huge potential for much better emission result if fuel cut-off's side effect can be alleviated. Considering that fuel cut-off generally being cutting engine fueling during zero load periods and introducing unreacted oxygen into the after-treatment system, the best way of dealing with the issue is to cut off or reduce the oxygen input to the TWC during those events. Several advanced engine technologies such as cylinder deactivation and exhaust gas re-circulation are good candidates to approach this issue.

An industry-production Cummins B6.7N natural gas SI engine was installed in the Ray W. Herrick Laboratories for study of variable valve actuation (VVA) technology, for the purpose of evaluating/improving SI engine's fuel efficiency, emission reduction, and engine knock resistance. A one-dimensional, physics-based natural gas SI engine model was investigated and calibrated in GT-Power software. To calculate the burn rates in the cylinder, three different pressure analysis methods were investigated and implemented. It is observed that all six cylinders' pressure curves are different, which in turn render different burn rates cylinder-to-cylinder. Cylinder with a higher peak cylinder pressure has a faster burn rate. Each operating condition has its unique pressure curve, and their burn rates are different under different operating conditions. Considering that the burn rate profile can vary cylinder-to-cylinder and operation-to-operation, to make the GT combustion model work for a larger range of loads, a fixed burn rate model may help in the preliminary research phase, but a predictive combustion model is more preferable.

The GT-Power model's VVA capability is investigated, where intake valve closure (IVC) modulation and cylinder de-activation (CDA) are built and analyzed. To mitigate TWC's over-oxidation issue during engine's fuel cut-off events, the CDA is implemented and simulated to demonstrate its benefit on further emission and fuel consumption reductions.

“Det bästa för Sverige och svenska folkets säkerhet” : En diskursanalys om konstruktionen av nationella intressen

Pettersson Daniels, Emmy January 2022 (has links)
In spite of the long tradition and strong national identity of military non-alignment, the Social Democratic government enabled a profound redefinition of the national interest into an application for a Swedish membership of NATO. Through a critical discourse analysis, this thesis will explore how this was made possible, focusing on the social construction of national interests. Based on constructivism and ideas of Jutta Weldes, three main concepts were identified guiding the discursive analytical framework: the security imaginary of a state, subject positions, and chains of connotations. Furthermore, the analysis shows that this radical shift in the Swedish security policy primarily occurred through reinforcing an image of ‘the Russian threat’, as well as through new subject positioning where NATO was moved closer to Sweden and ‘the self’, followed by particular chains of connotations. These findings emphasize the importance of applying a critical lens to explore perceptions and interpretations within discourse, the constitutive function of language and the hidden meanings behind it.

A comparative study of the political discourse between Pedro Sánchez (PSOE) and Santiago Abascal (VOX)

Cecilia Miranda, Garcia Sandin January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to look closely at a sample of the rhetoric used in the political scene in Spain today. The purpose is to see what rhetorical strategies leaders from two opposing parties, namely Pedro Sánchez (PSOE) and Santiago Abascal (VOX), use to convince voters of their own ideologies and opinions concerning the society. In addition, this study aims to see if populism, as a growing global trend, also can be found in their discourses. As populations are constantly exposed to political manipulation, investigations of political rhetoric is a continuous relevant research. The discourses chosen for this analysis were of approximately the same length, performed in nearby locations and time. A quantitative analysis was made where a list of frequently repeated words and their significance were drawn up and compared between the politicians. In addition, a qualitative analysis where the rhetorical strategies and criteria that highlight the ideological identity have been applied. The results obtained show a clear presence of populist rhetoric in the speech of Santiago Abascal (right party). To create a sense of national identity and group belonging with his listeners he used words such as Spaniards and Spain to a higher degree but also negative descriptions of others. Pedro Sánchez (left wing) also resorted to negative descriptions of others but differed by using number games to create a sense of credibility and inclusive language regarding gender.

Phytoplankton cell death induced by solar ultraviolet radiation

Llabrés Comamala, Maria Moira 02 June 2008 (has links)

Engaging with the Total oil corporation in Myanmar : the impact of dialogue as a tool for change towards greater conflict sensitivity

Cerletti, F. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis explores whether dialogue between a company and a non-profit organisation (NPO) can influence a company’s way of working towards being more conflict sensitive. As a case-study I analysed the dialogue between the French oil and gas company, Total S.A. (Total), and the US based NPO, CDA Collaborative Learning Projects (CDA) relating to the company’s operations in Myanmar/Burma. The objectives of the research were to ascertain if dialogue had a positive impact, and if so, what it was about the dialogue that enabled change, what was the process of change that could be observed and how embedded such change was. Drawing on post-modernism, systems thinking and complexity thinking, I have built on organisational change, conflict transformation, dialogue and cross-sector partnership literature to examine the role of dialogue as an enabler of change. While highlighting parallels in the discourses, I analyse the process and degree of change within the company through two conflict transformation models, one by Lederach (1997) and the other by Lederach, Neufeld and Culbertson (2007), which I feel best synthesise these parallels. The research is a longitudinal case-study (2002-2012), based on semi-structured interviews and document analysis. The study adds to the limited academic research on conflict sensitivity in general, and on the implications for a company’s way of working in particular. Although I find that within the business sector, the notion of conflict sensitivity is assumed in the wider concept of corporate social responsibility, noteworthy is the relevance of dialogue in change processes. Dialogue is an essential enabler as it sparks transformational levers also recognised in the literature reviewed. However it is not sufficient. The research illustrates that the dialogue between CDA and Total has played a critical role in facilitating a shift in the company’s way of working, with the contribution of other influences at play. As such, I draw attention to the complexity of the change process and discuss the current nature of the drivers of change within Total.

Främligarna mitt ibland oss : En kritisk diskursanalys om hur asylsökande konstrueras i svenska lokaltidningar. / The strangers that live among us

Holst, Simon, Bingöl, Mizgin January 2016 (has links)
This thesis aims to investigate how local newspapers in Sweden frame newsstories involving asylumseekers and how the asylseekers in those stories are constructed from a postcolonial theoryperspective. Furthermore this thesis aims to analys and show the connection between the written word in the articles and a larger, social dimension where ideologies compete for cultural hegemony. To match the aims of this thesis we used a critical discourse analysis, more specificly one influenced by van Dijks socio-cognitive CDA and applied it to five articles from three different newspapers. Our analysis showed that the articles constructed the asylumseekers as Others, and created a dinstinct line between the asylumseekers and the other participants in the texts. This line, based on a constructed community including the article, the reader and some of the participants but excluding the asylumseekers, got significant meaning in the articles when the asylumseekers got identified as a homogenic social group. A perspecive coming from the constructed community and not from themselfes and therefor denying the asylsumseekers their right to define themselves.
