Discontent with preaching as mode of communication is the
problem statement of this study.
The authoritative nature of deductive preaching is mirrored by
the exploratory, "discovery nature" of inductive models, emphasizing how dialogical preaching is enhanced by incorporating inductive elements into preaching. Meaning production and levels of meaning were studied, and a hermeneutical model for Pentecostal churches were proposed.
Dialogical preaching as attitude and principle as well as method was looked at, and the role of interactive participative communication in the dialogic process was described.
Special emphasis was placed on the Parable, the metaphor and
narrative preaching as models for inductive preaching, and the
development and phases of the "plot" was examined.
Bridging models between inductive and deductive styles were
explored, while two dialogical tools for preparation of sermons

Southern Sotho verbal relative clauses are, on discourse-pragmatic grounds, categorised
as direct and indirect. The pragmatic factors that govern the occurrence of these two
types of relatives within a particular discourse context are investigated.
An analysis of relative clauses occurring in live conversations as well as in the dramas
Bulane (Khaketla, 1983) and Tjootjo e tla hloma sese/a (Maake, 1992) reveals that
direct relative clauses usually modify the reference of predicate nouns (i.e. nouns used
as the complements of copulative predicates), while indirect relative clauses modify the
reference of object nouns.
Theories which suggest that both predicate as well as object nouns generally convey new
information, but that the reference status of predicate nouns is non-specific indefinite,
while that of object nouns is specific indefinite, are discussed. A hypothesis suggesting
that there is an interrelationship between the reference status of a head noun and the type

Konstruerad utsatthet : En bildsemiotisk analys av Nathalie Djurbergs stop motion-filmer Greed och Cave / Constructed exposedness : A visual semiotic analysis of Nathalie Djurberg’s stop motion-films Greed and CaveCserhalmi, Nora January 2019 (has links)
This essay aims to analyse how the exposedness is constructed in the Swedish contemporary artist Nathalie Djurberg’s two stop motion-films Greed and Cave. Five stills from Greed and three stills from Cave will be examined from a feminist perspective with a theoretical viewpoint based on theories from both art history and film studies. The method applied is visual semiotics which focuses on how meaning is created within an artwork rather than what the meaning is. The stills from Djurberg’s films are analysed first on a denotative level and then on a connotative level. Furthermore, visual semiotics theorises that everything is made up of systems of signs which allows this essay to study how the women in Djurberg’s movies functions as signs. The essay demonstrated that the women in Djurberg’s films can be seen as passive objects under the power of the male gaze. However, the analysis also displayed that the woman in Cave can be perceived as someone who defies the patriarchal norms for how a woman should behave and look. Nonetheless, the exposedness of these women seems to be constructed firstly in their bodies and how they are represented, both in looks but also how they are posed to reinforce patriarchal conventions in the female representation, and secondly in their relation to male characters - or the implied male gaze from a spectator - in the films. The women in Djurberg’s films can thus be understood as signs for male sexual desires, as signs for the Woman posing as the Man’s opposite, as the objective for His gaze.

This has paper has two main purposes: to analyze the translation of specialized terminology and ways of addressing the reader in a specialized tourist text in Spanish and its Swedish target text. The terminological difficulties on volcanism in the translation concerns the fact that the semantic field on this topic is diversified in the Canary Islands, contrary to the semantic field on volcanoes in Swedish. The theoretical background in this paper gives keys to describing the meaning of words in terms of connotation and denotation and describes how to use semantic components to solve the difficulties of terminology. The theory applied to the difficulties concerning ways of addressing the reader in the source text, explains the relation between the sender and the reader in terms of distance and closenes. The paper shows that the source text is inconsistent in this matter. To solve this task the translator has adopted a homogeneous way of addressing the reader, to achieve a target text loyal to the Swedish speaking reader and to consistency. The translation of tourist texts has been thought of as being an easy task, not demanding too much of its translators. This paper aims at showing that this is not the case.

The function and significance of war names in the Zimbabwean armed conflict (1966-1979)Pfukwa, Charles 01 1900 (has links)
This study is a survey of war names adopted by guerrillas during the
Zimbabwean conflict (1966-1979). The study collects, describes and
analyses war names that were used by ZANLA guerrillas in the conflict. It
explores onomastic patterns and processes that influenced these war
names. Names collected from textual sources and from interviews of
former guerrillas are analysed and classified into nine categories. One of
the main findings is that the background of the namer influenced the
naming patterns and processes identified in the study. Another finding is
that most guerrillas named themselves and it was also observed that some
guerrillas have retained their names. The findings, analysed within the
theoretical framework developed earlier from the onomastic and identity
theories, indicate that the war name plays a vital role not only in
concealing the old identity of the guerrilla but also in creating new
identities, which were used as weapons for challenging the enemy and
contesting space. Onomastic erasure and resuscitation are proposed as
partial explanation for the creation of some war names. The study
contributes to onomastic research not only in that it has produced a large
corpus of war names that can be used for further research in that it is a
significant point of reference in onomastic research in Zimbabwe and in
southern Africa, especially in the area of nicknames and war names. It also
lays the foundation for further research on the role of naming patterns and
processes in peace building and conflict resolution in Zimbabwe, on the

Corporate communications : a critical comparative study of the language of communication in the Zimbabwean banking sectorMushore, Washington 04 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to critically analyse the visual and verbal language used on printed adverts by some selected banks in Zimbabwe. A semiotic theory was used to analyse the printed adverts. The study revealed that all the banks use stereotyped language in communicating their messages to potential customers. Some audiences identified with this stereotyped languages, though others were also critical of stereotyped adverts. This paradox is dependent on the uneven levels of social consciousness of the audiences. The study argues that communication between banks and the potential customers is a product of negotiation of meaning at the point of reception of the printed adverts. The study then recommended the use of gender, race and class neutral language in order to enhance the effectiveness of advertisements. Future research into the study of the language of advertisement should focus on the problem of copyright infringement in advertising. / African Languages / M.A. (African languages)

Presented diploma work called "Semiotic and anthropological analysis of Prague metro" shows metro to a reader as a place from a semiotic point of view. A metro "user" plays a key role in the whole diploma work. Apart from dealing with metro as a place, this work also regards a reference of a fixed structure of metro to a city. The work also pays attention to an analysis of signs that can be found there by a metro user and can serve him as a useful tool for better orientation there. In the theoretical part semiotics as a science and its approaches are being presented. The diploma work also deals with a topic of a city from an antropological point of view. It applies, for example, a question of place and nonplace, picture of a city or a map and itineraries. The applied part of the work presents use of the theory in Prague metro. It also deals with orientation, navigational sign systems and comunication systems. Other topic examined in this diploma work is a role of Prague metro and its city surroundings in a mental city mapping done by its user. Besides, the work shows the metro and its surroundings as a place of everyday life. Abstracts in English and Afrikaans / The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the underlying meanings of Old Mutual South Africa’s (OMSA’s) CSR 2.0 corporate advertisements. It specifically examined the underlying myths and ideologies conveyed through the texts. This qualitative study was conducted by means of a visual semiotic analysis (Machin 2012) on eight CSR 2.0 corporate advertisements, which were purposively selected. A theoretical framework to measure visual CSR 2.0 corporate advertisements was developed, which aided in the sampling, data analysis and interpretation processes.
The findings of the study indicated that by positioning its CSR 2.0 positively in terms of change and transformation, progress and equal opportunities for all citizens, OMSA is fostering stakeholder-organisation relationships. In addition, it was also found that OMSA adopts established representational tropes of CSR 2.0 and use them repetitively that firmly entrenches the intended/encoded message to the viewer. / Die doel van hierdie verkennende studie was om die onderliggende betekenis van CSR 2.0 korporatiewe advertensies in Ou Mutual Suid-Afrika te ondersoek. Dit is spesifiek gemoeid met die onderliggende mites en ideologieë wat deur middel van die tekste oorgedra word. Die kwalitatiewe studie is uitgevoer deur middel van 'n visuele semiotiese ontleding (Machin 2012) op agt CSR 2.0 korporatiewe advertensies, wat doelbewus gekies is. 'n Teoretiese raamwerk, om visuele CSR 2.0 korporatiewe advertensies te meet, is ontwikkel, dit het bygedra tot die steekproefneming, data-analise en interpretasie prosesse. Die bevindinge van die studie dui daarop dat deur CSR 2.0 positief in terme van verandering en transformasie, vooruitgang, en gelyke geleenthede vir alle burgers te posisioneer, OMSA verhoudings met belanghebbendes kan bevorder.
