Undersökning av kostnader som uppstår vid tillverkning av flera produktvarianter : En studie utförd på Axis Communications / Analysis of arising costs related to the manufacturing of multiple product variants : A study performed at Axis Communications

Persson, Jesper, Persson, Johanna January 2017 (has links)
Today’s companies spend a significant amount of time and resources on increasing the number of product variants in their product range. The aim is to reach a wider segment of customers while maintaining a competitive position in the market. When developing new products, Axis Communications is often faced with the challenge of deciding whether to focus on one or more product variants. At present, focus is directed towards developing more product variants in the product range based on the price of direct material and the sales volume for each variant. Axis Communications therefore lacks knowledge of what additional factors that are affected when decisions about creating more product variants are taken. The purpose of the study is to provide a calculation model that can be used as a basis for analysing costs in producing more than one product variant. In order to achieve this purpose, the study has carried out two case studies based on two different products in Axis Communications product range. The first case study analyses the current state of production at Axis Communications’ contracted manufacturers, where costs that are affected by the production of multiple variants are identified and calculated. The second case study is a fictitious case study where the identified costs are calculated again, but only when one product variant is manufactured and the remaining product variants are disregarded. This was followed by an analysis regarding how the identified costs are affected when only one product variant is manufactured. Based on literature studies, the costs associated with the production of several variants have been identified. Furthermore, process flow charts have been developed and a study visit to one of Axis Communications contracted manufacturers was undertaken, where additional relevant costs have been identified and confirmed by persons with broad knowledge about the manufacturing processes. The costs identified to be affected the most by the variation of product variants are as follows: Direct incremental costs Direct material Inventory carrying costs Setup costs Fixture- and tooling costs Indirect incremental costs Quality costs Time to Market Investment costs Resource costs for the development of mechanics Resource costs for the development of electronics Certification costs Tooling costs Costs for testing of production Costs for prototyping The result for direct material showed that an average of the price of direct material as well as the forecasted production volume for each product variant can be assumed to create an initial perception of how much an increase of product variants actually costs. The inventory carrying cost also proved affected by the manufacturing of only one product variant. The inventory carrying cost decreased in the inventory of components but increased at the same time in the finished goods inventory since it is only the most expensive product variant with all functions compared to the other product variants that is being stored. The setup cost was eliminated since the setup times that occurred when changing product variants in the production disappeared. Furthermore, the cost of fixtures and tools was halved. The quality cost proved to be harder to quantify, however, it was realized that the higher the volume produced by a product variant the faster the product variant reaches the set quality goals, which in turn contributes to lower quality costs. Additionally, a lower number of product variants in the same production line means that handling becomes easier, including the risk of errors in assembling the product variant. It will also be easier to identify, prioritize and correct errors that may occur in the production line. This in turn leads to a reduction of quality costs. Time to Market was also affected when only one product variant was manufactured. Although Time to Market cannot be seen directly as a cost but rather as a loss of revenue, the study showed that it is faster to launch the product on the market if the number of product variants decreases. Finally, various investment costs were studied that could be linked to the production of several product variants, and the result showed that it is possible to reduce the investment costs if only one product variant is manufactured. Based on the outcome of the two case studies, a calculation model was designed for Axis Communications to help the company decide whether to manufacture product variants or not. The calculation model explains the costs that are affected the most by a change of number of product variants together with a description of how the costs are to be calculated. Using the calculation model will enable Axis Communications to make well-informed decision on whether or not to introduce more product variants in the product range.

TOMATO FLESHY FRUIT QUALITY IMPROVEMENT: CHARACTERIZATION OF GENES AND GENOMIC REGIONS ASSOCIATED TO SPECIALIZED METABOLISM IN TOMATO FLESHY FRUIT

Fernández Moreno, Josefina Patricia 18 September 2016 (has links)
Tesis por compendio / [EN] Until recently, the genetic improvement of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) was focused in agronomic traits, such as yield and biotic or abiotic stresses; therefore the interest in tomato fruit quality is relatively new. The tomato fruit surface can be considered both an agronomic trait as well as a quality trait, because it has an effect on consumer impression in terms of color and glossiness but also it underlies the resistance/sensitivity to cracking or water loss with consequences on fruit manipulation (e.g. transport and processing). The cuticle is deposited over the cell wall surrounding the epidermal cells and it is the first barrier in the plant-environment interface. The cuticle composition includes two main groups of metabolites: cuticular waxes and cutin. Other metabolites can be founded into the cuticle matrix, as triterpenoids and flavonoids. Those minor cuticular components are involved in the correct functionality of the cuticle. Understanding cuticle biosynthesis and genetic regulation requires the development of fast and simple analytical methodologies to study those specialized metabolites using large populations (e.g. mutant collections or introgression lines), together with the identification of genes and genomic regions responsible of their production. This thesis aims to contribute to our understanding of the molecular programs underlying tomato fruit quality by providing: i) a general protocol to profile cuticular waxes in different species, including tomato; ii) a QTL map for cuticular composition (i.e. cuticular waxes and cutin monomers) using the Solanum pennellii introgression line population; iii) a detailed protocol of the reverse genetic tool so-called Fruit-VIGS to assist in the study of gene function in tomato fruit; and iv) a thorough characterization of the first null allele for the transcription factor SlMYB12 (i.e. Slmyb12-pf) in tomato fruit which provides new insights into the regulation of the flavonoid biosynthetic pathway in the fruit peel by high resolution mass spectrometry and RNA-Seq approaches. Efficacy of air-polishing in disinfecting implant surfaces. A laboratory study simulating a non-surgical approach.

Isik, Alexandra, Truong, Tai January 2021 (has links)
Aim: To evaluate different parameters potentially affecting the efficacy of air-polishing devices in disinfecting implant surfaces in a non-surgical treatment approach of peri-implantitis lesions. Material and method: Altogether, 56 turned and 56 moderately rough implants were coated with a simulated biofilm. The implants were mounted in customized resin models simulating peri-implant 30° bone-defects, 3- and 5-mm deep; soft tissues were simulated with ballistic gelatin. Each implant was cleaned for 30 or 90 seconds in total (6 sites pr. implant; 5 or 15 seconds pr. site) with one of two different air-polishing devices (W&H and EMS). Implants were photographed in three different angulations and the amount of residual biofilm on the implant surface was measured digitally. Beta-regression models were used to assess the outcome. Results: Implant surface, treatment time and air-polishing device significantly affected the amount of residual biofilm. Turned implant surface, longer treatment time, and using the EMS device resulted in significantly less residual biofilm. In the most apical part of the defect, both air-polishing devices performed similarly, however, this was also the area with most biofilm left compared to more coronal aspects. Defect depth had no significant effect.  Conclusion: Superior biofilm removal is achieved at implants with turned surface, and when applying longer treatment time. At the deepest aspect of the defect, implant decontamination is compromised.

Tessier, Marine 05 1900 (has links)
Managing post-traumatic stress reactions during the first days following exposure to a traumatic event (TE) at work remains a challenge for first responder organizations such as emergency medical services (EMS) (p.ex. paramedics and emergency medical dispatchers). These workers are particularly exposed to unpredictable and recurring traumatic situations, which puts them at increased risk for distress and adjustment difficulties. More research is needed to determine how to intervene with these people as no intervention has yet been shown to be sufficiently effective. The evidence informed Psychological First Aid (PFA) approach aims to reduce initial distress and promote coping strategies in individuals exposed to a TE. It can be early delivered by peer helpers, congruently with international guidelines. This approach is still largely unexplored in the scientific literature. The purpose of this thesis is to identify how the PFA approach can be integrated among paramedics and emergency medical dispatchers. The first paper was conducted with 11 peer helpers to qualitatively explore factors that may influence adherence over time of recipients and peer helpers in their participation in the PFA intervention, through individual semi-structured interviews. Four themes and 11 subthemes influencing adherence were identified: (1) individual perceptions and attitudes of peer helpers and recipients about PFA intervention; (2) perceived impacts on peer helpers and recipients; (3) organizational support to PFA intervention; and (4) congruence with the occupational culture. The results of this study suggest that a variety of factors can be acted upon to improve adherence and that factors that may interfere with PFA involvement over time should be monitored. A second paper explored recipients’ (n=13) perceptions of the PFA intervention. The results of the thematic analysis suggest that the PFA intervention addresses the immediate needs of workers in accordance with Hobfoll’s five essential principles of early intervention (Hobfoll et al., 2007). This intervention would also promote adjustment and recovery after a TE, regarding the reduction of stigma, the increase of help-seeking behaviours, and the decrease of organizational difficulties. Finally, specific components regarding the intervention or the provider were identified as promoting appreciation of the PFA intervention. The identification of these components provides us with avenues for intervention improvement to best guide first responder organizations in the implementation and delivery of PFA. These qualitative findings also help to inform future quantitative studies as to which directions to take to test the effectiveness of this intervention. The results of these two articles have contributed to the development of the scientific literature on whether and how to integrate the PFA intervention in first responder organizations. They highlighted the possible benefits of such an intervention and offered concrete avenues for improvement for organizations wishing to implement or improve the implementation of PFA as an early post-traumatic intervention for their personnel.

A plan-do-check-act framework for WEEE and RoHS : a model for implementing WEEE and RoHS by integrating eco-design factors and activities into business operation and strategy.

El-Gomla, Randa A.M. January 2011 (has links)
Eco-design is relatively new and fast growing field of research due to its vital importance to the manufacturing industry and its related environmental issues such as reducing waste, and CO2 emission. A major EU programme relating to the environment is the waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive. The (WEEE) directive specifies ten categories and a voltage range which is up to 1.000 volts AC or 1.500volts DC. The developed framework came for the implementation of Eco-design principles that helps to take into account the adaption of the (WEEE) directive and the restriction of hazard substances (RoHS) used in electrical and electronic equipments. As a result of identify gaps and needs such as a lack of a comprehensive Eco-design framework and the need to integrate it to the normal business operation. In this research the PDCA framework for Eco-design and WEEE directive will be discussed. The framework will encompass all of the Eco-design¿s implementation and integration factors and activities such as WEEE and RoHS directives, Eco-design management, Environmental legislations, Eco-design tools and considerations. The literature review covers the topic of Eco-design¿s related issues, and WEEE and RoHS directives rules. Based on comprehensive questionnaire survey of Eco-design, WEEE and RoHS issues and activities among a sample of environmentally aware companies, statistical analysis is carried out using SPSS software. Then the findings of the survey triangulated with the findings of the literature review formed the basis of the design and implementation plan of the proposed framework

A Wide-Area Perspective on Power System Operation and Dynamics

Gardner, Robert Matthew 23 April 2008 (has links)
Classically, wide-area synchronized power system monitoring has been an expensive task requiring significant investment in utility communications infrastructures for the service of relatively few costly sensors. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate the viability of power system monitoring from very low voltage levels (120 V). Challenging the accepted norms in power system monitoring, the document will present the use of inexpensive GPS time synchronized sensors in mass numbers at the distribution level. In the past, such low level monitoring has been overlooked due to a perceived imbalance between the required investment and the usefulness of the resulting deluge of information. However, distribution level monitoring offers several advantages over bulk transmission system monitoring. First, practically everyone with access to electricity also has a measurement port into the electric power system. Second, internet access and GPS availability have become pedestrian commodities providing a communications and synchronization infrastructure for the transmission of low-voltage measurements. Third, these ubiquitous measurement points exist in an interconnected fashion irrespective of utility boundaries. This work offers insight into which parameters are meaningful to monitor at the distribution level and provides applications that add unprecedented value to the data extracted from this level. System models comprising the entire Eastern Interconnection are exploited in conjunction with a bounty of distribution level measurement data for the development of wide-area disturbance detection, classification, analysis, and location routines. The main contributions of this work are fivefold: the introduction of a novel power system disturbance detection algorithm; the development of a power system oscillation damping analysis methodology; the development of several parametric and non-parametric power system disturbance location methods, new methods of power system phenomena visualization, and the proposal and mapping of an online power system event reporting scheme. / Ph. Mobiliųjų paslaugų portalų technologijų tyrimas / Research of mobile portals technologies

Najulis, Mindaugas 03 June 2005 (has links)
Information technologies and mobile telecommunications rapidly enter our personal and social life. Mobile phone is no longer luxury – it has become a necessity. Growing volumes of the mobile services has caused a need to expand the mobile service employment opportunities in the Internet portals. Today’s portals, created using the means, offered by software manufacturers, employ exclusively the mobile Internet service, thanks to which the users can see and manage the necessary information and process of the portal at any time and from anywhere. The problem is related with the fact that mobile Internet services are still expensive in Lithuania. Therefore one should look for cheaper ways to reach and manage portal information. In order to solve this problem one can consider the SMS and MMS message sending, suggested by mobile technologies. Basic aim of the work is to create an entertainment portal, rendering the user both various Internet entertainments (e.g. Internet acquaintances, games), and mobile entertainment (e.g. sending messages, logos, melodies, animations and games for mobile phone) as well as a wide range of mobile services to be used to obtain and to manage the portal information. In the work I describe: portal evolution, classification and creation measures („BroadVision Portal“, „IBM WebSphere Portal for Multiplatforms v5.x“, „Sun One Portal Server v6.0“, „Red Hat Enterprise Portal Server“, „Microsoft SharePoint® Portal Server 2003“, „ORACLE 9ias Portal“, „PHP:... The replacement of the doctrine of pith and marrow by the catnic test in English Patent Law : a historical evaluation

Zondo, Raymond Mnyamezeli Mlungisi 02 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is a historical evaluation of the movement of the English courts from the doctrine of pith and marrow to the Catnic test in the determination of non-textual infringement of patents. It considers how and why the doctrine was replaced with the Catnic test. It concludes that this movement occurred as a result of the adoption by a group of judges of literalism in the construction of patents while another group dissented and maintained the correct application of the doctrine. Although the Court of Appeal and the House of Lords initially approved the literalist approach, they, after realising its untennability, adopted the dissenters’ approach, but, ultimately, adopted the Catnic test in which features of the dissenters’ approach were included. The dissertation concludes that the doctrine of pith and marrow, correctly applied, should have been retained as the Catnic test creates uncertainty and confusion. / Mercantile Law / LL.M.

Mercantile Law / LL. M.
