Error and epistemological process in the Pentateuch and Mark's Gospel : a biblical theology of knowing from foundational texts

Johnson, Andrew M. January 2011 (has links)
This thesis will consider the possibility of an epistemological process described in the narratives and teaching of the Pentateuch and the Gospel of Mark. The specific nature of this epistemological process will be explored upon the priorities constrained by the texts themselves. While the epistemological objectives are not always perspicuous to the reader of the canon, error is more clearly diagnosed in these narratives. This thesis then investigates the epistemological process by looking primarily at where characters of the narratives 'get it wrong' according to the narrative's diagnosis. Primacy appears to be given in these texts to heeding the authenticated and authoritative voice first, and then enacting the authoritative guidance in order to see what is being shown; in order 'to know'. Errors occur along the same boundaries. Failure to heed the authoritative voice creates a first order of error, while failure to enact the guidance yields a second order of error. We begin at the fore of the canon working through these Pentateuchal texts as they are presented to the reader. In the first chapter, the necessity of this current study will be defended. As well, we will survey various attempts at describing a 'biblical epistemology' and their deficiencies and/or methodological shortcomings. Chapter 2 will advance the case that Genesis 2-3 actually yields sufficient epistemological categories which resemble the rest of the Pentateuchal descriptions of error in more than superficial ways. Genesis 2 is analyzed as paradigmatic for proper epistemological process while Genesis 3 is paradigmatic of error. It is upon the boundary of the authenticated voice that error is assessed in the Garden of Eden. These patterns of error are lexically and conceptually reverberated in the stories of the patriarchs and Joseph. Chapter 3 then looks at how these features discovered in Genesis are interwoven in the reader's mind as they come to the stories regarding Moses' prophetic authentication, Pharaoh's errors, and eventually Israel's own errors. The errors of Balak with Balaam in Numbers are considered as further reason to believe that this epistemological process is not reserved for Israel. Chapter 4 explores the unique connections between Israel's Deuteronomic reflections and the creation narratives of Genesis. The fifth chapter leaps to the Gospel of Mark to discern whether or not any of these patterns from the Pentateuch remain in the Gospel narrative. In the final chapter, the fruit of our theological reading is brought forward to interact with current epistemological theories (mostly in analytic philosophy). These contemporary epistemologies are found wanting to describe anything like what we found in the scriptures. Implications are then drawn for theological prolegomena and praxis.

For the Love of God?! Is there a place for Gay Christians between Faith and Fundamentalism?

Prentiss, Apryl D. 05 May 2010 (has links)
Drawing from observation, autoethnography, ethnographic research and audio-taped interviews, this thesis explores the complicated and emotionally charged relationship between homosexuality and Christianity. The current culture war being waged in the media between the Religious Right and members of the LGBT community often results in the isolation and rejection of those who would define themselves as gay Christians. This thesis explores the role of the Bible as it informs and catalyzes this war and other foundational beliefs used as weapons in this rhetorical conflict. Additionally, this thesis analyzes the current battle between the church and the social movement for change in light of the historical battles fought over similar movements. The rhetoric of Christianity, specifically Fundamentalist rhetoric, has been emphatically defended and then dramatically changed in every such battle. Is this a possible resolution for today’s current battle? The thesis explores the historical basis and current application of rhetorical effects on this conflict through the author’s insight as a veteran of both worlds, interviews with major players in the battle such as Randy Thomas and Kristin Tremba of Exodus International and interviews with people who step on the battlefield everyday as pastors, congregants or observers in the fight. With each interview or rhetorical analysis, the viability of dialogue between these two groups is questioned and investigated.

New áreas were occupied in Brazil, opening new frontiers for agriculture, which began to develop new crops. This work aims to show the changes occurring in the Cerrado of Goiás from state interference in agriculture, with programs, investments, research and technology allowed the creation of big business to serve the southern and external markets. The focus is to show that economic growth occurred as a result of economic development. Research shows that this is an unsustainable model of agriculture in social and environmental issue, with the contradiction between the rate of economic growth and social development. It was a conservative modernization, further concentrating land and income in the region. It occurred to urbanization of the rural exodus to cities, where the population excluded from the field moved to the cities, increasing poverty and misery in the urban centers. As a result, there was the occurrence of economic growth, increasing GDP and Trade Balance of the State of Goiás, with no economic development. That is, the agricultural model implemented has brought social and environmental burden. To address these social burdens were studied 10 municipalities with the highest agricultural VA, 2008, based on Census 2000 and 2010, where he observed the occurrence of the rural exodus at all, and no increase of poverty, since income average of these municipalities was increasing, and urban incomes than rural, with some exceptions. The age of the rural population above 50 years increased, with the young going to the cities. In all municipalities informal employment is higher than 40%, exceeding 50% in some. And the environmental burden is seen as the destruction of the headwaters of rivers, soil solidification, the indiscriminate use of water, among others. It is a historical approach with the use of material already published separately, which will be collected so that you can get a more comprehensive view of this context.

She participates in just four episodes in the macronarrative on exodus (Ex 2:15-22; 4:18-20.24-26; 18:1-7). Therefore, in the first sight the Midianite seems to have less matter, in the sense of she occupies a position of secondary figure. However, the biblical literature shows that the roles, in certain moment, can be inverted. Suddenly, the protagonism comes out, exactly, through the character that, in general, does not have a big visibility. In fact, Zipporah astonishes us in many ways: in literary terms she is in the center; historically, she may contradict eventual prejudices from her cultural context in question when she defends the life of those who are endangered in their surviving, without anyone questioning her freedom as a woman; theologically she is reflected as someone who gains the consent of God. Thus, Moses’ Midianite wife becomes a model for the protagonism of those characters that, in general, are evaluated as secondary figures, highlighting their fundamental importance for the history of salvation / Séfora, esposa de Moisés, é o objeto de estudo desta dissertação de mestrado, uma personagem pertencente às tradições do êxodo.

TERESA CRISTINA DOS SANTOS AKIL DE OLIVEIRA 15 March 2019 (has links)
[en] Aaron s and Jeroboam s Calves: An Intertextuality Verification Analyzing Exodus 32,1-6 and I Kings 12,26-33 has the purpose not only to verify the existence of a broad intertextuality relations between Exodus 32,1-6 and I Kings 12,26-33 but also to present and demonstrate how this intertextuality relation occurs. This thesis is based using the synchronic method of narrative analysis. The reason to use narrative analysis is because the verification in how the text is presented and demonstrated has to consider the text itself in its final form. This work is focused to shad light in the study of intertextuality relations to or deriving meaning applied to the biblical texts not only proposing a clear concept and thesis but also to present the criteria of classification and manifestation as well. Verifying that there are interrelationships in both texts between Exodus 32,1-6 and I Kings 12,26-33 and to broaden the perspective in these intertextuality to every single verses in Exodus 32,1-6 and I Kings 12,26-33.

[en] THE USE OF ISAIAH 52:13-53:12 IN ROMANS 5:12-2: ANALYSIS MADE USING G. K. BEALE S EXEGETICAL AND INTERPRETATIVE METHOD / [pt] O USO DE IS 52,13-53,12 EM RM 5,12-21: UMA ANÁLISE A PARTIR DO MÉTODO EXEGÉTICO-INTERPRETATIVO DE G. K. BEALE

[en] The use of Romans 5:12-21 almost exclusively in debates regarding the origin and universality of sin has resulted in the super valorization of the discussion on segment 12d, with fundamental aspects for the understanding of the theological message comprised in the Pauline text going almost unnoticed. One of the pretermitted aspects was the allusions to Isaiah 53:11-12. The present research aims to contribute to a perception of the effects these allusions produced on Paul s contemporaries. They make the hearers/readers picture the image of the Servant who by his knowledge will justify many, present in Isaiah s text, as well as the biblical-theological categories of the New Exodus and the New Creation comprised in its context and to which it is strongly interconnected. Following that, the recovery of the value of these allusions would enable a more adequate understanding of the hermeneutical, theological and rhetorical potential of the pericope, which would result in a true contribution for the theological debate, considering that Paul s pericope plays an important role in such debate. The methodology used in this study will be that proposed by G. K. Beale, which, by contemplating the synchronic and diachronic aspects of the research, proposes an exegetical and interpretative analysis, therefore proving itself perfectly adequate to enable the perception of Paul s intention when using Isaiah s text.

Le Clézio, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Ibrahim al-Koni et Abdul Rahman Mounif / The crisis of the civilization and the utopia of the desert in the postcolonial discourse : a comparative study in the novel by J.M.G. Le Clézio, Tahar Ben Jelloun, Ibrahim al-Koni and Abdul Rahman Mounif

Al Temimi, Ala Sh Aieze 21 June 2017 (has links)
Civilization and desert: two words which in appearance appear to be antithetical, and yet they are and have often been tightly linked in the imaginary as well as in practical experience. From The Epic of Gilgamesh, to ancient texts and religious traditions or even to the successive variations leading to "geographic discoveries", "modernity" and to "globalization", the idea of civilization has many times met its opposite, its enlightener, and its point of reference that it gives to the desert. For two centuries, this interaction in the representations about the contemporary variations of the connection civilization/desert has been continuously providing an important inspiration to an extensive literature on the desert. The latter's relationship with the civilized space not only sets up some confrontation between two spaces but also between two worlds, the Western and Eastern ones, between two mythical times, two different visions of human destiny. This imaginary experience is also shown through the representations of the utopias ancient or recent to highlight the desert. The opposition civilization/desert in modern times forms the subject matter of this thesis. Our structural-ideologicaland socio-historical reading endeavors to identify, through all four texts, the semiotic and poetic processes. These processes are featured in order to bring this opposition to the fore, which are the mechanism of its representation, functioning and mutation. On the basis of an analysis of the contrast between the colonial discourse and the postcolonial one, our comparative approach hinges on the reading of the four postcolonial novelistic works belonging to four world pieces of literature which deal with the opposition civilization/desert while featuring the misery of the primitive Man facing so many attempts of the civilized Man to force him out of his background. The four works superposing History on fiction are structured on a denunciatory vision of modern civilization and on a utopian and idealistic vision of the desert and of nomadism.
