A \'hipótese da retradução\' pelas modalidades tradutórias, nas traduções para a língua inglesa de A paixão segundo G.H. / The retranslation hypothesis verified by modalities of translation, in two English translations of The Passion According to G.H.

Julieta Widman 30 September 2016 (has links)
This dissertation aims to quantitatively verify Bermans hypothesis of retranslation by describing and applying Auberts (1977, 1989) Method of Modalities of Translation (MMT), derived from Vinay and Darbelnets pedagogical model of technical procedures of translation (1958), in a case study of two English translations of The Passion According to G.H., by Clarice Lispector. The original was written in 1964, the first translation was made in 1988 by Ronald W. de Sousa, and the retranslation in 2012 by Idra Novey. The theoretical framework presents Venutis concepts of domestication and foreignization and the history of ideas on retranslation, from 1990 to the present. Clarice Lispector, the woman, and the writer, as well as its translators are described and commented on. Hélène Cixous and Benjamin Mosers works are presented as related to the motives of the retranslation. The Method (MMT) is presented and explained. Both translations seemed very literal with some differences possibly due to the translators subjectivity and demands of the editors. However, in a sample of 542 words the amount of domestication in the translation was statistically higher than in the retranslation and therefore in line with Bermans hypothesis.

From Pettson and Findus to Festus and Mercury...and Back Again: A Comparison of Four Translations of Sven Nordqvist's Picture Books

Yoxsimer Paulsrud, BethAnne January 2006 (has links)
In order to examine how children's literature might be translated, two different English translations of two Swedish picture books have been analyzed. The original Swedish books are Rävjakten and Pannkakstårtan by Sven Nordqvist. Rävjakten was translated as The Fox Hunt in 1988 and as The Fox Hunt in 2000. Pannkakstårtan was translated as Pancake Pie in 1985 and as The Birthday Cake in 1999. Literary translation in general, specific translation issues for children's literature, and trends in international English style have been considered. Analysis of the four texts has been made, with consideration given to the following areas: changes in illustrations, layout, or format; text changes; lexical choices; and retention, deletion, or modification of names and culturally specific references. The analysis revealed that the following tendencies were true for the later translations: foreignization of the text, word-for-word translation of the text, and a neutral international English variety.

Missa do Galo em Libras: possibilidades tradutÃrias

Daniel Almeida de Lima 00 October 2018 (has links)

Apresentação de uma tradução comentada da Introdução e da Primeira Parte de Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale de Claude Bernard: do projeto à realização / Proposal of an annotated translation of the Introduction and First Part of Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale by Claude Bernard: from project to realization

Christine Janczur 30 September 2015 (has links)
In this study, we present a translation with commentary (or annotated translation), from French to Portuguese, covering a section of a classic work of scientific importance. The author chosen was the French physician and scientist Claude Bernard, who published dozens of books about his practice as a professor of physiology at the College de France in Paris between 1843 and 1879. Upon consideration of a large number of works by this author and with the experts` advice in the fields of Philosophy and History of Science, the book chosen for this work was Introduction à l\'étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865). The book that is our corpus consists of an Introduction, followed by three parts: The Experimental Reasoning; Experimentation in Living Beings; Applications of the Experimental Method in the Study of the Phenomena of Life. The proposed work includes the translation of the Introduction and First Part of the book, adding several notes of different types, related both to scientific content and to translation issues. Our choice of translation for the development of this proposal was to take the reader into the original text or to its author, consisting of a translation procedure denominated foreignizing (Venuti, 1995). Therefore, we focused on the author`s writing style and terminology, emphasizing the scientific issues in the context of the nineteenth century, compared to the twenty-first century.

"A Tríplice Aliança continua sendo um grande êxito" : os regimes de controle do território paraguaio (1870-2019) /

Pereira, Lorena Izá. January 2019 (has links)
Cultural Adaptation in Video Game Localization : An Analysis of Cutscene Scripts in Japanese and itsTranslation to English of the game Lost Judgement

Roshamn, Jacqueline January 2022 (has links)
Cultural adaptation and free translation strategies are more common to use within the field of video game localization although they are still not recommended too veruse in translation studies. Free translation strategies are commonly used invideo game localization to make video games ready for a targeted audience. As free translation is mostly target-oriented in video game localization, the original source text often loses its meaning because of culturally adapting and modifying the text to fit to the target culture. This study aims to analyze 10 chosen cutscenes of the video game Lost Judgement, to find how frequently cultural adaptation and free translation strategies were used for pragmatic (proper names, cultural termsand expressions, allusion) and interlingual (regional dialect and slang) translation problems and how these problems were solved. The result and analysis of the study demonstrate examples of these translation problems within chosen cutscenes. The examples prove that depending on translation problems, both free translation and cultural adaptation can be used in combination with a literal word-for-word translation strategy. It also indicates that the video localization of Lost Judgement implied to use both domestication and foreignization approaches to achieve a higher satisfaction for the players of the game who can choose their favorite version. Another important factor was that the localization of the videogame focused on a functional approach whose purpose was to keep loyalty to the original text, the source text.

Copy of a Copy? : Indirect Translations from Bengali into Swedish Translated via English

Fröderberg Shaiek, Christopher January 2019 (has links)
This study investigates indirect translations translated from Bengali source texts to Swedish target texts via English intermediary texts by comparing Pedersen’s (2011) Extralinguistic Cultural References in coupled pairs from all three languages. The purpose of this study is to examine how indirect translations differ from direct translations and to discern whether there are specific translation strategies that translators use when transferring Extralinguistic Cultural References (ECRs) from a third language. The results were analyzed with a perspective based on translation norms, previous research into indirect translation, and the concept of foreignization/domestication in mind. The results show that an indirect translation can be closer to the original source text than the intermediary text it was based on in the first place. This was demonstrated with the Swedish TTs displaying more source-oriented transfer strategies compared to the English ITs, which displayed a higher amount of target-oriented strategies used by the translators. An unexpected finding was noted in the analysis material, namely that misunderstandings or deviations present in the ITs were not necessarily transferred to the TTs, which goes against previous research into indirect translations (cf. Dollerup 2000; Tegelberg 2011; Ringmar 2016). This supports similar results as found in Adler (2016) and Hekkanen (2014). In conclusion, the results suggest that the tendency of high-prestige literature resulting in adequate translations would be stronger than the tendency of indirect translations resulting in acceptable translations in the context of the Swedish target system. The source-oriented strategies in the TTs could also be seen as resistancy to target norms by the translators to create foreignizing translations.

Translation Norms, Strategies and Solutions in Lagerlöf's The Further Adventures of Nils (1911) : A Comparative Analysis of Proper Nouns and Lexical Items for Natural Phenomena

Bäckström, Elin January 2009 (has links)

The purpose of this paper is to examine translation norms, strategies and solutions in chapter XIII Westbottom and Lapland in The Further Adventures of Nils (Lagerlöf, 1911). In the foreword to the English translation of the novel, the translator writes that some of the purely geographical matter has been eliminated in the translation, and that cuts have been made where the descriptive matter is only of local interest. This statement raised questions about the intended readerships and the purposes of the original novel and the translation, respectively. Are these the same in the two texts, or are they different? Further questions were raised regarding the initial norm of the translator. Has she aimed for domestication or foreignization in the text?

In this paper, two domains were chosen as fields of study: proper nouns and the lexical fields of water, heights and flat land. Through an analysis of coupled pairs from the chosen domains, it was concluded that the translator’s initial norm was foreignization, but that there are also many examples of domestication in the text. It was also shown that while the original novel has two clearly stated purposes, namely of being a geography book for Swedish school children as well as a novel with high literary standards, the educational purpose is not as pronounced in the translation. However, the inclusion of a Table of Pronunciation displayed an educational addition to the translation, which is not part of the original novel.

Keywords: translation, Lagerlöf, English, Swedish, initial norm, domestication, foreignization.

Att översätta en kulturkrock : Postkolonial analys och översättning av ett kapitel ur Hanya Yanagiharas roman The People in the Trees / Translating a Culture Clash : Postcolonial Analysis and Translation of a Chapter in Hanya Yanagihara's Novel The People in the Trees

Brekell, Leo January 2016 (has links)
This thesis contains both an analysis and a translation into Swedish of an excerpt from Hanya Yanagihara’s novel The People in the Trees. Both analysis and translation have been conducted using a postcolonial and sociolinguistic theoretical framework. The translation is of a predominantly interventionistic and experimental nature, and has been done with Lawrence Venuti’s foreignizing method in mind, as well as with Tejaswini Niranjana’s poststructuralist view of postcolonial translation. The translation has also been extensively commented upon with an emphasis on how different kinds of asymmetrical power relations are manifested in terms of language use. To this end, Norman Fairclough’s version of critical discourse analysis has been especially helpful. The thesis concludes with a brief summarizing chapter in which certain conclusions are drawn from the present study.
