Facilitating innovative youth encounters for well-being and healing

Solomons., William Samuel 06 1900 (has links)
This research is based on a youth intervention organisation founded by the researcher in 1997. The organisation (Agape Copeland Train) is located in the Northern Cape. Youths’ contexts in the Northern Cape are fraught with psychological, social and relational problems, including violence, alcoholism, teenage pregnancies, depression, crime, poverty, and curtailed future prospects. An exploratory enquiry, informed by ecological and positive psychology, is undertaken. In particular, this research focuses on the (often neglected) perspectives of facilitators who work with youth. Exploration of how facilitators’ well-‐being is impacted on whilst serving youth in this challenging context is undertaken. Interviews with facilitators yielded themes of positive transformation, including shifts in mindsets and positive affect. In addition, aspects of the organisation’s development, as relevant to the context of the research, are described and a model of youth facilitation This research is based on a youth intervention organisation founded by the researcher in 1997. The researcher’s own experiences in the organisation (as director and as a facilitator) are reflected upon. Observations, incidents, and experiences are used as additional data sources. Facilitating vulnerable youth from an ecological systems perspective is an intricate, reflexive, complex and challenging process. / Psychology / MA (Clinical Psychology)

Group work with adolescent girls staying in a shelter

Netshishivhe, Tshifhiwa Marylene 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of this study was to do group work with 10 girls staying in a shelter in order to contribute to their adjustment. Lewin's field theory and the General Systems Theory were utilized to ground the group work. The epistemological framework of the study was exploratory and involved an in depth analysis of the group experiences of the participants. Unstructured interviews were also conducted with the participants. Hermeneutics as a method of analysis was applied to analyse data. The following themes captured the experiences of the girls: trust versus mistrust, connection and disconnection, alienation and isolation, emotionally overwhelmed versus security, being labeled/stigmatized, security versus insecurity, and hope versus hopelessness. This study provides a better understanding of the life worlds of girls staying in a shelter. It could also contribute to a greater awareness of the experiences of abused girls who stay in a shelter. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Humanistic Psychology offered the theoretical reference more specifically through the Philosophy of the Implicit developed by Eugene T. Gendlin. During one year, the researcher participated on thirteen team meetings. Team members, as well as the researcher, wrote individual Meaning Versions at the end of every reunion in order to grasp their impressions about each stage of the process. Those reports were organized in a chart made of ninety-one Meaning Versions and the resulting psychological comprehension. The researcher narrated the group process from his own experience as a participant generating a report about the intersubjective intricacy. The method used by the researcher to make explicit the elements of his own subjectivity all the way through the process of interpretating the experience was Thinking at the Edge TAE, developed by Gendlin. This resource also made possible to illustrate how, from a psychological point of view, the creation of an experience meaning happens. It is understood that the process of this task centered team made possible the emergence of a group that shared a common meaning. Two types of leadership emerged during the process: one task centered and the other type focused on the development of a group meaning. Three different levels were identified regarding the manner how the six members organized themselves and contributed towards the task development. The research made it possible to comprehend the group as a collective organism endowed with its own identity. From this perspective, it was possible to understand some particularities of group dynamics as well the potential repercussion of this study for applications in various fields, especially professional environments.

To work as a professor has a key influence for Silvia s thoughts and ideas. She has often been criticism of the psychology with American influence, as well as in relation to the classic methods of teaching in Brazil. The PUC-SP institution where she works for forty years provides her a freedom and an open environment that enhance her way. In order to study Silvia s publications and live had been used personal documents, books, interviews and biographies made by other authors. The personal documents found in the Núcleo de Estudos em História da Psicologia-NEHPSI give us an important contribution for our conclusions and show her strong image as a professor and scientist in Brazil and abroad. The analysis of Silvia s productions demonstrates a strong relationship among the socio historic environment and her ideas over the course of lifetime work. In order to analyze Silvia s thoughts and ideas has a key importance a non-edit text named My way wrote before her death with the intention to prepare a book with a collection of writings published or not, which ones was difficult to achieve. This text allows us to understand the structure given by her to her own thoughts. We discovered that the language psychology, the theoretical bases for a Brazilian social psychology, the community psychology, the studies concerning the process to become a group and the emotional mediation, represents subjects that have been present throughout the course of her life s generating researches, texts, courses and presentations. Time pass and new views and considerations have been added to these themes. The work was not finished before her death living space for other texts and studies in future / Nosso propósito ao elaborar esta tese é contribuir com o estudo da Psicologia Social no Brasil, mostrando que Silvia Tatiana Maurer Lane (1933-2006) teve importância relevante na formulação das bases teóricas de uma Psicologia Social Brasileira, adotada por psicólogos sociais, professores e pesquisadores.

Schühli, Vitor Marcel January 2020 (has links)
In the course of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, the transformation of the assistance network and health practices began to consider groups as one of the primary work methods for mental health professionals. Different interests and political projects involved in this process are updated into the particular dimension of the dispute between a biomedical model and a psychosocial care model, which propose different technological arrangements and distinct goals for group work. In order to apprehend the tendencies and countertendencies for this kind of activity, we initially considered the professionals’ conceptions about their group work practice and their relations with the work process and health care models. Therefore, we combined theoretical research in the fields of Collective Health and Psychiatric Reform with the empirical research in two Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS) of Curitiba City/PR. The analysis gathered data from participant observation, questionnaires applied to all professionals who were conducting group work at the beginning of the research (thirty), three focus group sessions with ten participants, and semi-structured interviews with seven participants. Professionals from different areas, including nursing (technical and university levels), psychology, social work and occupation... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

An Absence of Being: A Jungian-Based Model for Understanding Situational Management In Public Organizations

Jones, Allan M. 03 January 2005 (has links)
Traditional management-leadership and organizational literature depicts the individual as conflated with their role and instructs them to handle their employees and the situations that arise daily and over the course of business cycles instrumentally and for the purposes of control and productivity. This more traditional and mainstream literature does not adequately address, if at all, the unconscious factors influencing people or the management situations in which they find themselves. Using a model based upon the theory of the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung and the relationship of consciousness to the unconscious, this dissertation looks at situational management cases and reveals the existence of the unconscious in the midst of our strongest claims to rationality. Present and active, the cases show the unconscious to be a significant factor in creating subjective meaning and ordering our world even in the most "rational" moments of our lives in public administration. They further describe how it is that the individual in the manager-leader role is implicated in and caused by the very situations they are attempting to manage and the way in which acknowledging and relating to the unconscious provides an additional resource for public managers. / Ph.

Dunne, Caroline January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the role and skills of a professional facilitator. A facilitator is hired to facilitate meetings and other group processes trough dialogue, conversations and active participation, with the purpose of makig reflection and collaboration within and between organisations possible.
