A study of Shona war fiction : the writer's perspectives

Chigidi, Willie L. 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis is an in-depth study of Shona fiction about the liberation war in Zimbabwe. It looks at the way Zimbabwe’s liberation war is portrayed in Shona fiction and focuses on the factors that shaped writers’ perspectives on that war. It is argued that Shona war fiction writers romanticised the war and in the process simplified and distorted history. The researcher postulates that writers’ perspectives on this liberation war were shaped by factors that include the mood of celebration and euphoria, the dominant ideology of the time, the situations of independence and freedom, and literary competitions. The thesis further raises and illustrates the point that writers produced romances of adventure because they were writing on the theme of war, and if one writes on the theme of war one ends up writing an adventure story. However, it is also acknowledged that because authors were writing on a historical event they could not ignore history completely. Some aspects of history are incorporated into the fiction, thereby retaining a semblance of historical realism. The post-independence period is also seen as a time of cultural revival and this is considered as the reason behind the authors’ tendency to celebrate Shona traditional institutions and culture. The celebration of Shona traditional religion and culture introduced into the fiction the element of the supernatural that strengthened the romance aspect of the novels. Shona war fiction writers also perpetuate female stereotyping. Female characters are depicted as everything except guerrilla fighters. It is argued that there are no female characters that play roles of guerrilla fighters because during the actual war women were not visible at the war front, fighting. The thesis argues that men, who were pioneers of the guerrilla war and writers of the war stories, excluded women from liberation war discourse and ultimately from literary discourse as well. A few writers who comment on the quality of Zimbabwe’s independence and freedom show the disillusionment and despair of the peasants and ex-combatants as they struggled to settle down and recover from the war. / African Languages / D.Litt. et Phil.

In this sense, the understanding of this extreme option, members were privileged and two niches, the readings written committed before and during the armed conflict, as well as the multiple experiences of the rebels, from childhood until the ultimate episodes of strife. Completing this picture, the work also highlights the emergence of a New Left Marxist, a world both locally and nationally, and internationally, marked by the optics of the Cold War.

He began his musical acti-vity in the 1960s, playing at the Canção Festivals in João Pessoa. So he got into the music scene, meeting and playing with names like Cátia de França, Vital Farias, Shanghai, Elba Ramalho, Zé Ramalho and other artists. In 1974 he created, along with Paulo Ró, his brother, the group Jaguaribe Carne, that mixes elements of cultu-ral guerrilla, popular culture and musical experiments. In the effervescence of the dictatorship, the group performed on the street, in theaters and schools with protest songs and an aesthetic based on performance, experiment and local popular music such as: caboclinhos, frevo, cambindas and cirandas. The musical group has conso-lidated more than four decades of activity, developing a plurality of collective actions that encompass artistic production in different languages and even direct intervention in social, educational and cultural projects. Assuming that it is possible to document and express important aspects of the history of Jaguaribe Carne and its trajectory of activities in the cultural scene in Paraiba, this work gathered data from a journalistic research of a theoretical and applied nature, aiming at the production of an audio-visual product consisting of a Journalistic Documentary. Sociální hnutí a jejich dopady na přechod k demokracii v Mexiku: případ zapatistů / Social movements and their impact on the transition to democracy: the case of Zapatistas

Petříček, Martin January 2004 (has links)
This dissertation aims to enrich the discussion about the role of social movements in the process of democratisation, ie. to assess their role in the transformation from authoritarian to democratic regime. In particular, it tries to find the way how to assess the impact of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, EZLN) and related movement on the Mexican transition to democracy in 1990s. The analysis tries to identify possible impacts on three different levels -- political (which means regime transition), social (which is related with the change of the nature of the relations between state and society, once described as corporatist) and economical (which means the end of neoliberal policy promoted by recent Mexican governments and the introduction of more equal, "more democratic" policy in zapatista logic). It looks both at the formal (direct through bargaining) and informal (influence) impact of the zapatista movement. From the methodological point of view, the study is case analysis, in some parts it uses historical analysis. The text is structured into five chapters. The first chapter shows main theoretical and methodological approaches to the social movements with special focus on Latin American context. It is followed by explaining the principles of methods used to assessment of the zapatista impacts. The second chapter presents main approaches to social change and process of democratic transition. The third chapter contains the historical analysis of transformation of relation between state and society during 20th century, from the introduction of (state) corporatist model in 1930s to its gradual dismantling in the late 20th century. The fourth chapter analysis the evolution of EZLN from its beginning in Lacandon jungle in southern Mexican state of Chiapas. In relation with the emphasis of movement's goals, the period from 1994, when zapatista uprising in Chiapas started, to 2010 is divided into four stages. In the fifth chapter, theoretical findings are applied on EZLN and zapatista movement and formulated hypotheses are tested.

Rodríguez Tortajada, Almudena 15 April 2016 (has links)
[EN] Abstract: Craftivism is an artistic-social movement that, through handcraft and generally with a social approach, aims to transform something already used for a better end, through creativity, in an individual or collective way. This investigation tries to understand the repercussion of the craftivist actions, and of its DIY ethic (Do-It-Yourself). The present PhD bases its deductions on the analysis of different local and international projects, dividing the theoretical body in two principal sections completed by an annexe with cards, which illustrate and gather the most important characteristics of every mentioned example. It tries to be a space to think about the efficiency on reclaiming crafts, emphasizing its transforming capacity. These pages will consider if knitting is a feminist act and/or reinforces stereotypes of femininity, if it's an apolitical form of consumerism, if it's possible to engage in knitting (or another type of crafts) as a political activity, and how can be an effective mode of social action-transformation and community building. In addition, my own participation in some projects has allowed to better outline the movement operating, to determine the principal threads that tie its intentions, to be impregnated with the spirit of (re)claiming the domestic arts and the public space, and finally to compose and put in all the pieces of this fabric that you have in your hands, which every reader has to interpret and internalize, and (probably) would celebrate the crafts in a mindful way. / Rodríguez Tortajada, A. Gerillakrigets traditioner & Sveriges föreställning av det fria kriget

Heljebrand Bohn, Kristofer January 2020 (has links)
In the 1940s, Sweden adopted a policy known as Det fria kriget (approximately translated to The Free War) which was a conceptualization of a war in which its homeland had suffered a major invasion by a malignant and far stronger opponent. Det fria kriget remains, to this day, mostly a set of instructions outlining how the military were to reorganize itself, at that point, to uphold the nations military resilience. This paper compares, contrasts, and discusses established conceptualizations of guerrilla warfare along the traditions of Sun Tzu, Lenin, Mao, and Che Guevara and concludes that Det fria kriget is in fact a conceptualization of Swedish guerrilla warfare. This paper calls to action a deeper understanding of the tradition and how it might have changed up until today, if it is to serve the nation’s interests come tomorrow as well.

Álamo Pons, Óscar del 27 December 2006 (has links)
This research analyzes the indigenous organization process in center-andean countries (Bolivia, Ecuador, Perú) and reveals those factors which cause indigenous movements (in Bolivia and Ecuador) and those ones which impede this phenomenon in Perú - although these countries have common trends in economical, political and historical spheres - with special attention to the political dynamic of ethnic identities during the last three decades. Also these pages detail the impact of the indigenous movements in: political systems and their performance in electoral arena; democratization processes and the challenges that these movements put into them and over state reform initiatives.

The Cassinga Raid

Alexander, Edward George McGill 31 July 2003 (has links)
In 1978 the SADF carried out an airborne assault on Cassinga in Southern Angola. The South Africans claimed that Cassinga was a key SWAPO military headquarters, training camp and logistic base. SWAPO claimed it was a refugee camp and that the approximately 600 people who died in the attack were innocent civilians. The SADF said it had dealt SWAPO a significant military blow; SWAPO said the SADF had carried out a brutal massacre of old people, women and children. This dissertation focuses on the military dimensions of the raid, examining first the military situation in southern Angola and northern Namibia at the time, then looking at Cassinga itself before reviewing the airborne capability of the SADF, considering the decision that was made to launch the attack, describing the planning and preparations, the actual assault, a Cuban counter-attack and the extraction of the South African paratroopers. It concludes with the propaganda claims of both sides before assessing the military significance of the action. / History / M.A.
