A discussion and analysis is offered of Gunnar Myrdal's contributions to the theory of political development. Attention is focused on his conception of the role of the state as an agent of development. The paper is divided into two parts. Part I is concerned with the development of the state in the advanced welfare democracies of the West. We find that this development both affects and is affected by the emergence of an organized institutional infrastructure. We discuss the political development of the West --the development of a strong, capable, and effective state --in terms of the liberal interlude, the organization of markets, the spread of equality and the emergence of the "welfare state" as an "organizational state." We find that Myrdal seriously underestimates the critical requisites for an effective yet democratic "organizational state." Part II discusses Myrdal's application of his model of development to the underdeveloped world. Here we find that Myrdal is ideologically compatible with those elites who stipulate that the state must be the main agent of development. Yet through a discussion of the "modernization ideals" of socialism, political democracy and state planning as well as the exigencies of corruption and personal insecurity we do not find an organized institutional infrastructure underpinning the strong, capable, and effective state. Rather we find the "soft-state." For what we characterize as rational political reasons the "soft-state" is marked by low citizen obedience and few obligations placed on the citizens by the political leaders. We argue that this is intimately related to the low degree of equality between individuals and groups. In fact, since so many receive so little from the outputs of state activity, the state is unable to enforce a network of citizen obligations. We find that the "soft-state" is characterized by two things: ambivalence among the elites; and, stability of the system. Yet this stability is a stability of stagnation not development .On the basis of Myrdal's discussion of the agricultural sector we suggest that the only way the "soft-state" will be hardened into a more capable state is through a selective retrenchment of state activities. It would appear that the underdeveloped world would profit from a liberal interlude of reduced state activities. Moreover, by giving encouragement to those groups in society who are less bound by convention and who do not have a vested interest in the status quo, (e.g. the progressive agriculturalists), it may be possible to secure political development, that is, the development of an organized institutional infrastructure, making for a strong, capable, and effective state. / Arts, Faculty of / Political Science, Department of / Graduate

I slutet av femtiotalet var det ingen som kunde tro att de tre icke-socialistiska partierna Centern, Folkpartiet och Högern skulle kunna enas om något politiskt program och än mindre samsas i en regering. Med tiden förstod partierna ett efter ett att det enbart var genom en borgerlig samverkan som de skulle kunna bryta Socialdemokraternas makthegemoni. Några händelser var av yttersta vikt för att borgerligheten skulle kunna enas. Centern gick från att vara ett resultatfokuserat stödparti åt Socialdemokraterna med annat fokus än bara böndernas, vilket ledde till en mer marknadsekonomisk orientering. Folkpartiet däremot behöll sin profil och arbetade i många år för ett närmande till Centern, vilket var källan till både glädje och sorg för partiet. Högern å sin tur, som präglades av starka interna stridigheter, reformerades till ett modernare parti under sextiotalet men det var först under Bohman som partiet enades och därmed blev ett mer trovärdigt regeringsparti. Högern, sedermera Moderaterna, var det parti som under flera år arbetade hårdast för att borgerligheten skulle samla sig i ett gemensamt regeringsalternativ, emedan framförallt Centern under en lång period höll emot. Utöver partiernas egna utveckling kan också nämnas socialdemokratins radikalisering som en en för borgerligheten sammansvetsande faktor. Detta tillsammans med samhällsförändringarna gjorde att sextiotalets förarbete resulterade i en borgerlig regering 1976.

<p>Detta examensarbete är en studie av glas- och silverformgivaren Gunnar Cyréns och modedesignern Gunilla Ponténs designmetodiker, formspråk och inspirationskällor.  Det undersöker också om de uttrycker sig konstnärligt i sina privata trädgårdar.  Kan deras formspråk spåras i trädgården och har trädgården inspirerat dem i deras formgivningsarbete?  Utifrån vad vi har funnit har vi skissat på trädgårdsidéer och tematrädgårdar med utgångspunkt i hur vi uppfattat deras formspråk.  I det arbetet har vi tillämpat de av dem beskrivna designmetodikerna.</p> / <p>This degree thesis studies the design methodology, artistic expression and source of inspiration of two renowned Swedish designers: Gunnar Cyrén, glass artist and silversmith, and Gunilla Pontén, fashion designer.  It also investigates if they express themselves artistically in their private gardens.  Can their artistic expressions be seen in their gardens?  Has the garden inspired them in their design work?</p>

This bachelor thesis engages in the question of silence in the writings of Fenno-Swedish modernists Mirjam Tuominen and Gunnar Björling, silence being understood as both a poetic theme and a question of literary form. Alongside this exposition runs a discussion about the possibilities and impossibilities of interpretation in the field of academic literary studies. This query is connected to the different ideological positions of the two writers, conjoined by ideas about anti-comprehensibility. Considering certain weaknesses of classical hermeneutics as well as the theory of deconstruction, especially in the case of reading poetry, this thesis tries to point out possible routs for a practice of a more dynamic interpretation, with special regard to understanding the trope of silence in the modernist poetry of Tuominen and Björling. The composition explicitly applies a ”method of wandering” inspired by Maurice Blanchot’s understanding of the priests of Dionysus in Hölderlin’s writings – maundering in the holy night – as a metaphor for a critique-in-the-creating. This complies to Theodor W. Adorno’s idea of the aporetic situation of the interpreter and the unsolvable conflict between scientific discourse and art understood as a medium of truth in a more radical sense. The study aspires to perform a dialogue between different faculties of interpretation, and to make this dialogue viewable, so that the question of understanding remains ambiguous in line with the poetics of Tuominen and Björling. The results that follow bare the mark of aporia, but points towards a possible reading of silence (in Björling’s and Tuominen’s writings) as connected to a certain kind of sensibility and confidence in the immanence of truth in existence.

Denna uppsats analyserar dikterna ”(Österöd)”, ”(Återbesök – 26 augusti)” och ”(Koelbjergkvinden)” ur Gunnar D Hanssons diktsamling Tapeshavet. Dikterna undersöks i förhållande till Timothy Mortons ekokritik, samt ur ett metapoetiskt och etiskt perspektiv. Vad dikterna framhåller är det problematiska i att försöka skriva fram en anti-antropocentrisk värld eftersom det mänskliga subjektet alltid finns implicerad i det metapoetiska greppet som Hansson använder sig av. Dikterna bär i och med detta också på en etisk aspekt eftersom de engagerar sig i frågor om både hur man bör och kan dikta om miljön. / This essay analyses the poems ”(Österöd)”, ”(Återbesök – 26 augusti)” and ”(Koelbjergkvinden)” from Gunnar D Hansson’s collection of poems Tapeshavet. The poems are examined in relation to Timothy Morton’s ecocriticism, and from a meta-poetic and ethical perspective. What the poems emphasize is the problematic aspect of trying to convey an anti-anthropocentric world, as the human subject is always implicated in the meta-poetic grip which Hansson uses. Subsequently, the poems also carry an ethical aspect because they engage in questions about both how one ought and can write about the environment.

Via denna uppsats, vilken behandlar tre utvalda orgelkompositioner av de svenska tonsättarna Valdemar Söderholm, Torsten Sörenson och Gunnar Thyrestam, alla i sin profession också aktiva kyrkomusiker och pedagoger, vill jag fästa uppmärksamheten på en idag något negligerad era, nämligen den nysakliga perioden inom Musica Sacrae.
