Emotional experiences of incestuous fathers : a social constructionist investigation

Van Niekerk, Wilhelmina Johanna 30 September 2005 (has links)

Lost his voice? interrogating the representations of sexualities in selected novels by Gabriel Garc{226}ia M{226}arquez.

Manyarara, Barbra Chiyedza 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis interrogates García Márquez’s representations of sexualities in the following selected novels: Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981); The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975); One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967); The Sad and Incredible Tale of Innocent Erendira and her Heartless Grandmother (1972); and Memories of My Melancholy Whores (2004). It is argued here that García Márquez’s employment of the sexuality motif enables him to delve into many worldwide current concerns such as the irrelevance of some socio-cultural sexual practices; commercial sexual exploitation of children; the different manifestations of prostitution; and female powerlessness under autocratic rule. Earlier literary critics have tended to narrowly interpret García Márquez’s employment of the sexuality motif as just a metaphor for colonial exploitation of the colonised. The study also explores the writer’s artistic role and concludes that García Márquez speaks against commercial sexual exploitation of children as he concurrently speaks on behalf of children so exploited. Similarly, the writer speaks on behalf of prostituted womanhood by showing how prostitutional gains do not seem to cascade down to the prostitutes themselves. García Márquez also invests female sexual passivity as a coping mechanism against a dictator’s limitless power over the life and death of his citizens. However, the writer also constructs female agency that grows from the rejection of an initial victimhood to develop into an extremely flawed and corrupt flesh trade that co-opts and indentures children into sex work with impunity. Thus the study breaks new ground to show that García Márquez’s representations of different sexualities are not merely soft porn masquerading as art. His is a voice added to the worldwide concerns over commercial sexual exploitation of children in the main and also the recovery of a self-reliant female self-hood that was previously inextricably bound to male sexual norms. Quite clearly, García Márquez demonstrates that female prostitution is driven by a lack of social safety nets, a lack of other economically viable options and also a distinct lack of educational opportunities for female economic independence, hence the flawed female agency. / English Studies / African Languages

[en] THE INCEST N LEVITICU S LAWS. ANALYSIS OF THE HOLINESS LAW (LV 18 & LV 20) IN RELATION TO HAMMURABI S CODE (PARAGRAPHS 154-158) AND THE QUESTION OF SILENCE ABOUT INCEST WITH THE DAUGHTER(S) AT OLD TESTAMENT / [pt] O INCESTO NAS LEIS DO LEVÍTICO: ANÁLISE DA LEI DE SANTIDADE (LV 18 & LV 20) À LUZ DO CÓDIGO DE HAMMURABI (PARÁGRAFOS 154-158) E A QUESTÃO DO SILÊNCIO SOBRE O INCESTO COM A(S) FILHA(S) NO ANTIGO TESTAMENTO

RICARDO LENGRUBER LOBOSCO 06 November 2007 (has links)
[en] The existing laws in Lv 18 and Lv 20 are about illicit sexual intercourse, with special focus on relationships of incestuous nature. The issue is also present in paragraphs 154 to 158 of the Hammurabi Code. Apart from the second, the first texts do not explicitly forbid incestuous intercourse between father and daughter(s). The present thesis proposes both the analysis of each legislative corpus in their social and literary contexts and their comparison as a way to explain the existing silence on incest in the Leviticus. Besides, this paper discusses the normative reach of biblical laws considering the theoretical discussion about the issue taking the cuneiform Law into consideration.

"A função da confidencialidade: bioética e incesto" / The function of confidentiality: bioethics and incest

Gobbetti, Gisele Joana 11 August 2006 (has links)
This work intends to build up considerations about the confidentiality function for health professionals who deal with people involved in cases of incest, trying to evaluate the ethical limits of these interventions. The methodology used was a theoretical reflection based on Bioethics and Psychoanalyses and was illustrated by research with health professionals, including doctors, nurses, social workers and nurse assistants from Pediatric Emergency Room at University Hospital of São Paulo University. Free exploring interviews about the possibility of attending children and adolescents with suspects of sexual abuse and the way to deal professionally with such situation were conducted with those professionals. The interviews were recorded and transcribed for analysis through content analysis technique. The attendance of patients involved in sexual abuse situations is considered by health professionals as a difficult problem to approach. The absence of conflict between breaking professional secrecy and the maintenance of the reliance bond between the health professional and the patient on incest situations, shows the difficulties for the professionals to deal with people involved in those cases and, to discriminate the function of a health professional, by considering incest as a structuralizing taboo from the essence of human being.

Indeed necessary to emphasize that, where there is no mutual agreement, there is invasion, and, therefore, there is abuse, either physical or emotional. For such, I make use of the study and analysis of four clinical cases, of female patients serviced by me in my private clinic. I also comprehend that there is no way of thinking on the meaning of trauma, without pointing to the matter of violence. Although the crucial axis to be debated does not relate of a study about the trauma itself, there is no way to refute the experience of sexual assault, mainly in the childhood or adolescence, is emotionally overwhelming, and, obviously, traumatic. I could note peculiar and characteristic traits on each familiar group, on which I was able to comprehend that the incest issue does not encompass only the father-daughter pair, but indeed englobes a complex weft of unconscious turns that drag for generations (unconscious conflicts between paternal and maternal grandparents), and that leads into the sexual abusive situation. On the incestuous-perverse scene, there is a spectacle of Oedipus Complexes , and of non-crafted conflicts, of all this familiar group. Looking at the incestuous relation is also lean towards the comprehension of the familiar dynamics, and marital relationships. Therefore, this research also builds a reflexion about the conjugality, and, on the study of the familiar psychoanalysis, both within the incestuous situation. Cyrulink (1994) advocates the concept of physical predator by naming the abuser, signalling the desire for present destruction, and endorsing that the usage of the other like a thing-object , perpetrated by the former, has a devastating symbolic effect on his victims. I could conclude that the incestuous family leaves marks on the overwhelming victims of abuse, which can be developed with difficulties, but are not impossible to overcome / Este trabalho trata da inter-relação entre a sexualidade do adulto perverso e a sexualidade perversa polimorfa da criança, portanto infantil, culminando em relações incestuosas, imprimindo no psiquismo infantil das filhas dos pais abusadores a marca do trauma.

Mothering and Surrogacy in Twentieth-Century American Literature: Promise or Betrayal

Weaver, Kimberly C 11 August 2011 (has links)
Twentieth-century American literature is filled with new images of motherhood. Long gone is the idealism of motherhood that flourished during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in life and in writing. Long gone are the mother help books and guides on training mothers. The twentieth-century fiction writer ushers in new examples of motherhood described in novels that critique the bad mother and turn a critical eye towards the role of women and motherhood. This study examines the trauma surrounding twentieth-century motherhood and surrogacy; in particular, how abandonment, rape, incest, and negation often results in surrogacy; and how selected authors create characters who as mothers fail to protect their children, particularly their daughters. This study explores whether the failure is a result of social-economic or physiological circumstances that make mothering and motherlove impossible or a rejection of the ideal mother seldom realized by contemporary women, or whether the novelists have rewritten the notion of the mother’s help books by their fragmented representations of motherhood. Has motherhood become a rejection of self-potential? The study will critique mother-daughter relationships in four late twentieth-century American novels in their complex presentations of motherhood and surrogacy: Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye (1970), Kaye Gibbons’s Ellen Foster (1990), Dorothy Allison’s Bastard Out of Carolina (1992) and Sapphire’s Push (1997). Appropriated terminology from other disciplines illustrates the prevalence of surrogacy and protection in the subject novels. The use of surrogate will refer to those who come forward to provide the role of mothering and protection.

Hur kunde det ske? : en studie av myndigheter och medias berättelser om ”fallet Louise” / How Could It Happen? : A Study of Institutions' and Media's Stories About the Louise Case

Karlsson, Jenny-Gunay January 2011 (has links)
2007, Swedish television, “Uppdrag granskning,” aired their story about “Louise” from Vetlanda. A drug dependent father had gotten custody of his daughter and sexually abused her from the age of 10 to 15. The local social services got several notifications about Louise suffering of negligence, and did investigate the family several times without taking any actions to protect her. At one time, father and daughter were living in his trailer placed in a gravel pit, and the police worried about her and called social services, because it was below cero degrees outside. That time the social services did not even start another investigation, and did not visit Louise in the trailer. How could that be possible? Why did not the social workers take any actions? Upon that, reportage followed a debate program in Swedish television, huge media hype in general and a street manifestation in Vetlanda. The purpose of the manifestation was to force the chiefs of the social services in Vetlanda to leave their positions. (In addition, they did) Between 2007-2009 Swedish television aired three programs about Louise (one to tell Louise’s story, one to debate how it could happened, and finally one last episode about her life today.) TV channel 8, aired one program “Adaktusson”, in witch the grandparents of Louise was welcome to tell their version of the story. They claimed that she had been living with them most of the time and that things were not as bad as they seemed in the Swedish television reportage. The aim of this report is to examine how narratives was constructed in institution’s and Media’s documentation about the child Louise, to find out how a Grand narrative can be built, and see if it is possible to get a kind of understanding for the actors by analyzing the process of storytelling.

Aronsson, Mattias January 2008 (has links)
The aim of this thematic study is to examine how the water motif is used in Marguerite Duras’s literary work. The study shows that water has multiple functions in these texts: it is linked to major themes and creates an enigmatic atmosphere by its association with the unknown, the inexplicable and the unconscious. The strong presence of water in Duras’s texts is striking. References to the water element can be found in several titles throughout her career, from early works such as Un barrage contre le Pacifique (1950) to La mer écrite (1996), published just after her death. Almost all of her fiction take place near water – and the rain or the sound of waves serve as leitmotifs in specific novels. The water motif can play a metonymic as well as a metaphoric role in the texts and it sometimes takes on human or animalistic characteristics (Chapter 4). Several emblematic Durassian characters (e.g. the beggar-woman, Anne-Marie Stretter and Lol V. Stein) have a close relationship to water (Chapter 5). The water motif is linked to many major Durassian themes, and illustrates themes with positive connotations, for example, creation, fecundity, maternity, liberty and desire, as well as themes with negative connotations such as destruction and death (Chapter 6). A close reading of three novels, La vie tranquille (1944), L’après-midi de Monsieur Andesmas (1962) and La maladie de la mort (1982), shows that the realism of the first novel is replaced by intriguing evocations of the sea and the pond in the second text, motifs which resist straightforward interpretation. The enigmatic feeling persists in the last novel, in which the sea illustrates the overall sombre mood of the story (Chapter 7). Finally, the role of the water element in psychoanalytic theory is discussed (Chapter 8), and a parallel is drawn between the Jungian concept of the mother archetype and the water motif in Duras’s texts. The suggestion is made in this last chapter that water is used to illustrate an oriental influence (Taoist or Buddhist) of some of the female characters in Duras’s work.
