How does Martin Buber's concept of I-Thou dialogue inform the theory and practice of relational leadership?

Reitz, Megan January 2014 (has links)
This thesis explores the possibility of dialogue between leader and follower in order to further develop the theory and practice of relational leadership. It draws from and contributes to Relational Leadership Theory (Uhl-Bien 2006) and Buber’s concept of ‘I- Thou’ dialogue (Buber 1958). Using first-person and co-operative inquiry methods (Reason and Bradbury 2008b) the ‘space between’ (Bradbury and Lichtenstein 2000, Buber 1958) leader and follower is explored in order to reveal the complexities inherent within leadership relations. Four main findings are detailed which enrich our understanding of how leadership relations operate from ‘within living involvement’ (Shotter 2006). Firstly, the quality of leader-follower encounter could be affected by levels of ‘busyness’ and the ensuing assessment and prioritising process. Secondly, the pressure to ‘seem’ rather than ‘be’ may strengthen the construction of a façade which might be dismantled, in part, through disclosure, though this may feel extremely risky given organisational ‘rules’. Thirdly, mutuality between leader and follower may be crucially influenced by the way in which ‘leader’, ‘leadership’ and ‘power’ are constructed in the between space. Finally, ineffable dialogic moments may occur through sensing a particular quality of encounter amidst and despite the complexity of a myriad of micro-processes vying for attention in the between space. This thesis contributes a further strand to RLT constructionist work focused on the quality of leader-follower encounter which has not been previously revealed. Leadership constructs and macro-discourses relating to power, ‘busyness’ and the need for ‘worthwhile meetings’ encourages transactional relating. Consequently, opportunities for genuinely encountering others in organisational settings are suffocated. This holds important implications for ‘leaders’ and ‘followers’ who wish to creatively address pressing organisational issues in the 21st century through dialogue. Fundamentally this thesis suggests we pause to consider the implications that the nature of our encounters in our work-life have upon us as human beings wishing to know what it is to be fully human.

Mångkulturalitet och religion

Mustafa, Leunora, Ledeby, Gustaf January 2020 (has links)

Jägerman, Sara January 2011 (has links)

Fridman Bjurmar, Miriam January 2017 (has links)
What does mutuality mean in a pedagogical relation? This study seeks to explore one of the essential parts in a pedagogical relation, mutuality. From a relational perspective, that lifts the existential element in pedagogics, the study want to contribute with a possible understanding of the concept in order to strengthen the importance of this existential element. Through concept analysis, interpretations of Martin Buber´s relational philosophy and the relational perspective, the aim of the study has been to explore and to understand mutuality and its meaning in and for the pedagogical relation regarding the question of mutuality´s substance, in the sense of the substantial that lies in it. The results of the study shows: Mutuality as a substantive is scarcely described in dictionaries. It usually appears as equivalent to, and explained as, reciprocity. It was though possible to trace differences between the two terms. Mutuality denotes two parts who are involved in the same phenomenon, here and now, while reciprocity includes actions that can have a delay in time. Within the observed fields, the concept has been studied as a human attribute and mainly for its role for humans and society. It is usually used with a preconception where the involved parts, with the mutual action, give each other something they can benefit from. When studied closer, special characteristics were identified. Mainly depending on its context, variations were conditioned to: the origins/initiators of the actions – equally or unequally between parts. Advantage/influence between parts – direct or indirect. The reason for the action – as an obligation, an ideal or a common exchange of benefits. Time aspect – the actions could either keep a certain model or facilitate a sustainable change. The involved parts – either humans or non-human in co-actions. The concept´s essential characteristic, its own substance, could first be seen with help of the relational perspective and Martin Buber´s relational philosophy. By looking in between the parts of a relation and using Buber´s notion of a two folded way to relate to the world (as I to Thou and as I to It) mutuality could be interpreted and understood as a pre-condition, something that is there a priori. A constant abstract ground where the parts can meet each other. A substantial component of the gap in-between the parts, a pre-condition for the relation to be fulfilled. In this way, it is possible to understand mutuality in a pedagogical relation as symmetric, where parts relate to each other equally regardless of their differences, here and now. For mutuality’s manifestation is immediate. It affects and mutates – transforms us, forever. Without this existential, relational understanding of mutuality, it will be, in a pedagogical relation, at risk to be left just as an exchange between parts with an instrumental purpose, where the parts pass by each other and stay unaffected. The person may turn to be an object, pedagogics’ relational ground may be lost and the balance in education may remain deranged.

Femininity, Motherhood, and Feminism: Reflections on Paul Mendes-Flohr’s Biography Martin Buber: A Life of Faith and Dissent §

Hadad, Yemima 15 January 2024 (has links)
In his intellectual biography of the Jewish philosopher Martin Buber, A Life of Faith and Dissent written in 2019, Paul Mendes-Flohr offers us an intimate view of Buber’s life and thought without neglecting the story of the women in his life and their contributions to shaping his thought. In this short reflection essay, I wish to present a crosscutting perspective on the important biography written by Paul Mendes-Flohr, by highlighting Buber’s relation to women, feminism, and femininity, a perspective that emerges in almost every chapter of the biography. This angle, I hope, will illuminate not only the personal–psychological dimension of Buber’s inner life but also the deep currents of his intellectual life and thought.

Johansson, Linda January 2016 (has links)
The interest of this study was preschool teachers’ experiences of creating and maintaining good relations to preschool children and the children’s response to these relations. Qualitative interviews with nine preschool teachers have been conducted in order to obtain the empirical material. The study has a lifeworld phenomenological approach and the theoretical points of departure are the interhuman thesis of Martin Buber, relational pedagogy and a philosophical caring perspective. The result shows that a good relation between preschool teacher and parents leads to good repercussions in the preschool teachers’ relation to the child. The preschool teachers’ approach concerning the ability to interpret the children’s different body languages, signals and needs is also an important part of the result. Further result shows that creating good relations to the children sometimes can be a time-consuming work. The children have a good ability to choose which adult that most satisfying can meet their current needs. The preschool teachers express the importance of the children’s right to their own emotions, mutual mental communication between child and preschool teacher, joy, positivity, to meet around common memories and an accepting and available environment. The preschool teachers also talk about being true to their own person in their relational work with the children or the children lose their trust in the adult. Different dilemmas were expressed regarding creating and maintaining good relations to the children in preschool and mainly focused on preschool teachers’ different approaches towards the children as problematic.

The understanding of dialog this research is based on comes from the works of Paulo Freire and Martin Buber. For these two authors, education toward humanization can´t happen without dialog because this is the most essential human attitude by which man surpasses his condition as an object to wholy become subject. This research is qualitative with a fenomenological-existentialist basis. Four teachers involved in the ongoing project in the school participated in this study, and with whom five meetings were arranged where reflexive interviews were done following Szymanski´s proposal. The analysis of the data was inspired by existential fenomenology hermeneutics to reveal the meanings of dialog present in the understanding of the teachers. The results that were reached show comprehension of dialog as communication, associated with liberty and to consideration towards others. The results, though, show it is unassociated to educational practice which should, instead, establish limits and exert power in order to exercise responsibility. This research indicates the need for reflection and deepening of the meaning of dialogical education by teachers, reaffirming its libertarian character based on a responsible authority that promotes responsibility in fellow students / A presente pesquisa buscou conhecer como o diálogo situado na prática educativa em sala de aula é compreendido por professoras de uma escola pública do município de São Paulo, na qual está sendo implementado um projeto de educação em tempo integral, segundo a perspectiva dialógica de ensino.

Till-tal och an-svar : En konstruktion av pedagogisk hållning / Calling and Respons(e)ibility : A construction of pedagogical creed

Jons, Lotta January 2008 (has links)

The aim of this study is to construct as philosophical conceptualization of pedagogical attitude. Founded on Martin Buber’s philosophy of dialogue, the construction suggested in the study takes on a normative character, thus understanding pedagogical attitude as a matter of pedagogical creed. The author proposes a construction where existence is understood as a matter of Calling and Respons(e)ibility. Pedagogical attitude is thus understood in accordance with the notion of paying heed, responsibly responding and calling. As a consequence this conceptualization calls on the teacher to speak authentically, serve, embrace a loving leadership, provoke and dare to take risks.

Within the concept of Calling and Respons(e)ibility, “calling” means addressing a particular other, whilst respons(e)ibility is a term chosen to make the concept connote to the response as well as the responsibility taken in relation to a particular calling. The concept of Calling and Respons(e)ibility is understood as closely connected to the religious concept of vocation, although recycled in a secularized meaning, thereby put forth as a matter of realizing the fate of the teacher, the student as well as the field/subject. The concept of Calling and Respons(e)ibility is in the study connected to the notions of “mothering”, obedience and adjustment as well as to the notions of responsibility, fidelity and being enterprising.

Using a methodological approach of philosophical conceptualization suggested by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the study sets out to reuse such old theological concepts as vocation, calling, paying heed and responding responsibly in new forms in a pedagogical context, thereby intending to discover, articulate and discern new aspects of that context.

By conceptualizing pedagogical attitude on the basis of an existential, normative and relational perspective, using the notion of calling and respons(e)ability, the study aspires to contribute to the ongoing conversation concerning teacher-student-relationship.
