Dentro do nevoeiro: diálogos cruzados entre arte e arquitetura contemporânea / Inside the mist: crossed dialogues between contemporary art and architecture

Guilherme Wisnik 10 May 2012 (has links)
In the \"expanded field\" of contemporary culture, arts and architecture increasingly share common issues. Hence, whether in relations of collaboration or confrontation, arts and architecture dissolve their old disciplinary boundaries to form a powerful social and media framework, which meaning is essential for the understanding of the contemporary world. Encompassing the Brazilian problematic in relation to the body of international production, this research attempts to undertake the challenge of reflecting about the hiding tectonic, materiality and perception of work in a globalized world dominated by the immaterial production of value, such as the financial capital. Although this research precludes a definitive judgment about this issue, it attempts to understand how the outputs of some contemporary architects and artists deal with the reality of a world that is ever more intangible and converted in images, and in other words, permanently consumed. The hypothesis posed here is that, in the impossibility of restoring the resistance of the world and matter - which would put back in discussion the modern \"formativeness of aesthetics\" -, some of the most prestigious contemporary artists and architects translate the current dilemma in the loss of focus in images or objects, which also translates itself in a voluntary search for the absence of form. Hence, the poetics of formless and clouds are, from my point of view, powerful expressions of the contemporary crises.

Experimental and Numerical Studies of Mist Cooling with Thin Evaporating Subcooled Liquid Films

Novak, Vladimir 11 April 2006 (has links)
An experimental and numerical investigation has been conducted to examine steady, internal, nozzle-generated, gas/liquid mist cooling in vertical channels with ultra-thin, evaporating subcooled liquid films. Interest in this research has been motivated by the need for a highly efficient cooling mechanism in high-power lasers for inertial fusion reactor applications. The aim is to quantify the effects of various operating and design parameters, viz. liquid atomization nozzle design (i.e. spray geometry, droplet size distribution, etc.), heat flux, liquid mass fraction, film thickness, carrier gas velocity, temperature, and humidity, injected liquid temperature, gas/liquid combinations, channel geometry, length, and wettability, and flow direction, on mist cooling effectiveness. A fully-instrumented experimental test facility has been designed and constructed. The facility includes three cylindrical and two rectangular electrically-heated test sections with different unheated entry lengths. Water is used as the mist liquid with air, or helium, as the carrier gas. Three types of mist generating nozzles with significantly different spray characteristics are used. Numerous experiments have been conducted; local heat transfer coefficients along the channels are obtained for a wide range of operating conditions. The data indicate that mist cooling can increase the heat transfer coefficient by more than an order of magnitude compared to forced convection using only the carrier gas. The data obtained in this investigation will allow designers of mist-cooled high heat flux engineering systems to predict their performance over a wide range of design and operating parameters. Comparison has been made between the data and predictions of a modified version of the KIVA-3V code, a mechanistic, three-dimensional computer program for internal, transient, dispersed two-phase flow applications. Good agreement has been obtained for downward mist flow at moderate heat fluxes; at high heat fluxes, the code underpredicts the local heat transfer coefficients and does not predict the onset of film rupture. For upward mist flow, the code underpredicts the local heat transfer coefficients and, contrary to experimental observations, predicts early dryout at the test section exit.

Weather symbolism in DBZ Ntuli's literature

Mncube, Gedion Juba George 28 February 2006 (has links)
This study deals with weather symbolism in DBZ Ntuli's literature. Chapter one describes the aim, biography of DBZ Ntuli, definition of important literary concepts, the scope and the methodology. Chapter two considers the symbolic use of mist, fog, overcast weather and clouds. Each of these aspects is defined and is studied under each genre, i.e. in terms of its use by Ntuli in prose, drama and poetry. Chapter three explores the symbolic usage of rain, thunder and the rainbow in all the genres in which Ntuli writes. Chapter four deals with the imagery of the sun. The sun is shown as exhibiting three distinct levels of heat: mild, hot and extremely hot. Chapter five deals with the symbol of cold weather. Its aspects can be perceived on two levels: cold weather and extremely cold weather. Chapter six is a general conclusion that reveals the outcome of the research, observations and the recommendations. / African Languages / M.A. (African Languages)

Investigation and development of oil-injection nozzles for high-cycle fatigue rotor spin test

Moreno, Oscar Ray 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / Resonant excitation tests of rotor blades in vacuum spin pits using discrete oil jets showed that impact erosion of the blades could limit test times, but lower excitation amplitudes were produced using mist nozzles. Smaller diameter discrete jets might extend test times, but to fully prevent erosion, oil mist droplet size needed to be 30 microns or less. The present study examined both approaches. Prototype nozzles were developed to create 0.005 inch diameter multiple discrete jets using first alumina, then stainless steel tubing, laser and micro-machine drilling. The latter technique was selected and 50 were manufactured for evaluation in HCF spin tests. A vacuum test chamber was built to observe and photograph spray patterns from the prototype nozzles and from commercially available mist nozzles. An LDV system was used successfully to determine the velocity of the oil droplets within the mist. A complete mapping of mist nozzle sprays is required to allow routine design of blade excitation systems. / Lieutenant, United States Navy

Petrology and Sedimentology of the Morrissey Formation (Kootenay Group), southeast British Columbia - Southwest Alberta

Hogg, John Richard 04 1900 (has links)
<p> The Morrissey Formation of the Kootenay Group was mapped and sampled in three outcrops in southwestern Alberta and southeastern British Columbia; Burnt Ridge and Sparwood Ridge in British Columbia and Adanac Mine sight in Alberta. </p> <p> The lowest unit mapped was within the upper Fernie Formation (Passage beds) and consists of interbeds of sandstone and siltstone that were deposited as shallow water marine sediments. </p> <p> The Morrissey Formation conformably overlies the Fernie Formation and contains two members; the Weary Ridge Member and the Moose Mountain Member. The Weary Ridge Member consists of fine to medium grain, parallel and trough crossbedded sandstone, that was deposited as a delta-front-sand facies produced by coalescing of delta-sands from three to four delta complexes. The overlying Moose Mountain Member consists of high angle trough crossbedded, coarse grain, "salt and pepper" sandstone representing a distributary mouth bar environment. The Moose Mountain Member is unconventional in that the upper portion contains two units not seen in other sections. A marine trace fossil unit and a beach unit are both found within the upper portion of the member. These two units represent a transgression caused by channel switching and a regression and reworking of sediments into a beach respectively. </p> <p> Above the Morrissey Formation are the continental coals and fluvial systems of the Mist Mountain Formation. </p> <p> Petrographic studies on twenty five thin sections show two sedimentary sources for the Formation. The first source being chert rich Upper Paleozoic carbonates and the second source is Lower Paleozoic clastics that have previously been derived from a metamorphic complex of the Canadian Shield. The sandstones are cemented by quartz syntaxial overgrowths implying that there was a moderate degree of pressure solution, indicating a fairly high overburden pressure during diagenesis. </p> / Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Välsignad förbannelse : En retorisk analys av bibliskt material i Black Metallyrik

Jonsäll, Hans January 2015 (has links)
This bachelor thesis offers a rhetorical analysis of the album Maranatha by Swedish Black Metal artist Funeral Mist. Its main focus is on the intertextuality between the song "Blessed Curse" and the biblical book Deuteronomy, especially Deut 28 from which it has sampled a large portion of text. In the analysis I uncover the similarities and differences between the two texts in order to explain how the biblical fragments constitute new meanings when rearranged and taken out of their original context. The analysis concludes with relating the material to its new context i.e. the album Maranatha and the Black Metal scene by explaining other intertexts and references to the Bible and discussing which genre is best suited to describe the album as a whole. The results of the study show that the biblical quotations in the lyrics convey radically different messages and meanings compared to their original content in Deut 28. This in turn acknowledge how dependent linguistic symbols are on their context. I finish off my thesis with a few reflections on the moral and ethical implications of this use of biblical material concerning the anti-christian agenda supported by members of the Black Metal scene and specifically how Daniel Rostén of Funeral Mist view his own work and agenda.
