HEMINGWAY'S TWENTIETH-CENTURY MEDIEVALISMHogge, Robert Melton January 1980 (has links)
This study opposes the traditional argument that Ernest Hemingway uses settings in his major full-length fiction which primarily depict modern man's rootlessness. On the contrary, he carefully chooses settings, with Spain as the metaphorical center, which evoke a sense of the medieval past, a concept which I define and describe as "twentieth-century medievalism." Although it is argued that Hemingway is cosmopolitan in his choice of settings, he excludes those settings which are not fundamentally Roman Catholic. In addition to his careful choice of settings and his use of medieval motifs, Hemingway also establishes the love relationship between man and woman as a central symbol for twentieth-century wholeness and unity. Once the concept of "twentieth-century medievalism" has been defined within Hemingway's major full-length fictional canon, the study then focuses on The Old Man and the Sea as the novel which consummately exemplifies how Hemingway's medievalism suggests microcosmic unity. An analysis of criticism written on The Old Man and the Sea shows the approaches to be highly eclectic and an important issue (whether the novel is a tragedy) to be unresolved. This study shows how "twentieth-century medievalism" provides a unified fictional microcosm for the novel and serves as a backdrop from which Hemingway projects his uniquely medieval modern-world tragedy. The Old Man and the Sea, however, is not simply a tragedy but is an artistic novel which correlates time (complete twenty-four-hour periods) with four literary modes of expression: comedy, lyricism, the heroic, and tragedy. During the initial days, Santiago is gradually transformed from a common fisherman to a lyric questioner of life's meaning, then to an epic hero, and finally to a tragic protagonist who acts out his role in a carefully delineated Aristotelian tragedy. Throughout the novel, the comic sense reminds both Santiago and the reader that the fisherman's experience is ultimately a comedy of transformations. The study concludes by relating the concept of artistic transformation to the emergence of the Hemingway myth and argues for a more sensible interpretation of the myth. Finally the study affirms that the intricacies of Hemingway's artistry have not been fully explored and offers the concept of "twentieth-century medievalism" as a technique to make more comprehensible Hemingway's romanticism.

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention telephone follow-up compared with conventional treatment in elderly patients after cholecystectomy and hernia surgery and to analyze the evolution of nursing diagnosis Delayed Surgical Recovery (DSR) over four weeks, in the groups involved. Methodology: This was a randomized controlled trial with a quantitative approach, performed in two teaching hospitals in Rio de Janeiro. The sample consisted of 43 patients followed for 4 weeks. For randomization of the sample was used the program Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and as a nursing intervention, the follow-up by phone for patients in the experimental group. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine, under protocol number 327/2010 and CAAE: CAAE: 09911212.0.0000.5243. Data collection was carried out over six months by the research nurse and five examiners who were trained for the diagnois. Results: No significant difference at 5% level, in the social and demographic variables, between the two treatment groups, was found. We observed a significant decrease of the first assessment to last assessment for the defining characteristic "loss of appetite with nausea" in the experimental group (p = 0.013). Between the first and last assessment the defining characteristic "need help to complete self-care" in the control group tended to decrease (p = 0.041). Factors related to significant falls in the "pain" in the experimental group (p = 0.041) as well as "feeling after surgery" (p = 0.023). Conclusion: There was a low prevalence of the diagnosis of DSR in groups for the surgeries studied. Although there was no statistical difference between the groups, there was a greater tendency to fall in the experimental group. Telephone follow-up is a low-cost resource, accessible by most of the population, with high rates of adherence and may be used for health care in public health system. During the telephone contact were the main questions regarding the use of medications, and the power to wound. Studies with larger samples are needed so that one can say that there are statistical superiority regarding the incidence of Delayed Surgical Recovery when compared to conventional treatment.

" 'Fish, you are going to have to die anyway. Do you have to kill me too?' " : Om tro i Ernest Hemingways The Old Man and the SeaJohansson, Elliot January 2023 (has links)
In this study I’ve conducted an analysis of Ernest Hemingway’s short story The Old Man and the Sea where my focus has been analyzing the main character Santiago and how and in what ways he can symbolize mankind’s great need of faith. The definition of what faith is and can be understood as is based on the theory called “worldview” or “philosophy of life”. The usage of this theory is because the faith I’m analyzing, through Santiago, is one that is unspecified and dynamic. I’ve used two methods to conduct my analysis, hermeneutics and close-reading. My analysis is divided into three headlines which follow the progress of the novels story, each with a specific theme: Santiago, destiny and death. To answer the leading research question, how and in what ways Santiago can symbolize faith, I’ve formulated analysis questions for each heading which I’ve answered by with citing the novel and interpretating what said quote may signify regarding my study’s purpose. My conclusion for the study is, simply put, that Santiago in matter of fact does symbolize man’s great need of faith. I’ve examined how complex faith is, how it can be experienced and the importance of its functionality. In other words, my analysis has resulted in another, perhaps new, image of what faith is and can be.

Natural Innocence in "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", the Nick Adams Stories, and "The Old Man and the Sea"Hall, Robert L. (Robert Lee), 1956- 05 1900 (has links)
Hemingway claims in Green Hills of Africa that "all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn." If this basic idea is applied to his own work, elements of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn appear in some of Hemingway's Nick Adams stories and his novel The Old Man and the Sea. All major characters and several minor characters in these works share the quality of natural innocence, composed of their primitivism, sensibility, and active morality. Hemingway's Nick, Santiago, and Manolin, and Twain's Huck Finn and Jim reflect their authors' similar backgrounds and experiences and themselves come from similar environments. These environments are directly related to their continued possession and expression of their natural innocence.

Previous issue date: 2017-09-29 / Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - CAPES / The aging process is a progressive and natural phenomenon that implies biological, psychological and social changes in the individual, repercussions in multiple dimensions, including the health-disease process and ways of seeing and being in the world. The Family Health Strategy is the privileged locus for the production of integral health care, in view of its proximity to the social reality of the subjects and the bond with the community. The production of care is related to the ways of knowing and doing in daily health, maintaining direct relationships with the work process, permeating human relations, subjectivities, social values and the horizontal worker-user relationship. The social representations of the professionals about in the production of care to the elderly are revealed through decision-making and their daily practice in health, since their senses, social and cultural values direct their practice. This is a qualitative research, exploratory approach, a single case study, with the objective of understanding the social representations of the production of health care to the elderly in the perspective of the professionals of the Family Health Strategy, having as theoretical framework The Theory of Social Representations of Moscovici. The study was submitted to the Ethics Committee in Research involving Human beings, being evaluated and approved. The study participants were thirteen health professionals included in the Family Health Strategy in the City of Feira de Santana-BA. The technique of data collection was the semi-structured interview. The methods used for data analysis were similarity analysis, with the help of IRAMUTEQ software, and Bardin content analysis. The categories seized after data analysis and interpretation, were: "Being old" in the conception of professionals of the Family Health Strategy; Looks at the production of care for the elderly: the subject as the "object" of intervention or "center" of health care ?; Interface between a family and a family health team: Possibilities to (re) signify the health care practices of the elderly. The social representations of health professionals of the ESF seized in the study allow say that the production of care for the elderly is anchored in the technicist perspective of treatment production in detriment of care, which requires intersubjectivity and relational technologies. In order to transform care production into something familiar, ESF health professionals construct concepts and manifest them in practices based on the hegemonic biomedical model, which values hard and light-hard technologies rather than light technologies, disregarding the intersubjectivity of subjects.

Assim, a
The present research aims to identify the data about the crimes committed against the elderly
in the city of Palmas, state of Tocantins, in order to subsidize the public power with data that
make it possible to know the problem and implement actions that aim to mitigate and abolish
the practice violence against the elderly. Population aging, although historically a recent
phenomenon, already produces reflexes in several social sectors, evolving rapidly and on a
large scale. Unprepared for this new social context, society found itself in the need to seek
means that would allow this new population not to suffer violations of their fundamental
rights. Among the main ills that afflict the elderly, violence has been highlighted, since it
further degrades the person who is already vulnerable. Thus, the research sought to define the
concept of violence against the elderly, to finally carry out the mapping of the crimes
committed against the elderly in the municipality of Palmas-TO, as a way to provide public
authorities, data that allow the promotion of policies aimed at eradicating acts of violence
against the elderly. Finally, there was a need for training of public agents involved in care for
the elderly, as a way to improve and guarantee the access of the elderly to their fundamental
rights.

A elaboração do website seguiu as etapas: análise e planejamento, modelagem, implementação e avaliação. / This research aimed to evaluate a website with information from the field of Speech Therapy with a focus on Parkinson\'s Disease. A website containing information on the subject was developed with simple, clear and objective language, with concise content, based on books, articles indexed in databases and manuals on the subject. The preparation of the website followed the steps: analysis and planning, modeling, implementation and evaluation. The evaluators were invited to participate in the following categories: elderly (I), caregiver of elderly (CI) and speech therapist (F). The groups completed an online form with information on identification, frequency of internet use and level of education. The sample consisted of 45 participants, the majority being female (64.4%), 15 elderly (mean age 68.13 years), 15 elderly caregivers (mean age 32.20 years), and 15 speech pathologists (average age of 26.13 years). Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Spearman\'s correlation coefficient. The content of the website was evaluated as \"appropriate\" with higher ranking in sub-menu S4 (84%) and lower in sub-menus S5 and S8 (77%). The comparison between the 3 groups of grades attributed to the content by the Kruskal-Wallis test did not show a statistically significant difference between them in any of the submenus. There was a significant correlation between the speech-language pathologist group in submenu S3, in relation to time (p = 0.006) and age (p = 0.014) with assigned scores. Spearman\'s Correlation Coefficient was negative, implying that the higher the age and the training time of the speech-language pathologist, the lower the scores assigned in submenu S3. It is concluded that the contents prepared based on scientific literature, composing a source website for consultation and complementing reliable information on Parkinson\'s Disease.
