Poster like it’s 1999 : Framställningar av huvudpersoner i filmaffischer från 1999. / Poster like it’s 1999 : Depiction of protagonists in movie posters from 1999.

Frosteryd, Victor January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how movie posters from 1999 portray the film's main characters. I will also investigate the design of the works and find out how effective the poster was for the audience at the cinema. The analysis describes and analyzes movie posters from American films. Four questions were asked to help the essay in reaching its purpose. How are the posters designed? How is the protagonist identified through visual elements in the posters? Is there a recurring theme in how the key art is presented? How effective is the poster for the audience at the cinema? By answering these questions, I intend to gain a greater understanding of the art of film and to contribute to the science of film and marketing.

Wotinseva, Janna January 2016 (has links)
This thesis investigates the correlation between narrative structure and gender of the central character in Russian folktales. The study is based on Vladimir Propp’s theory of functions, which is applied to a sample of ten wonder tales from Aleksandr Afanas’ev’s collection of folktales. The purpose of the study is to determine if there are any gender distinctions in the arrangement and manifestation of functions in the selected tales. The findings suggest that the narrative structure of Russian folktales differs depending on the gender of the tale’s protagonist. Structural features such as the acts of interdiction and violation are found to be characteristic of tales with female protagonists, while the structure of tales with male protagonists is distinguished by a greater extent of activity. The conclusion is that Russian folktales appear to reflect gender stereotypes on a structural level, especially the preconceived notion that obedience and passivity are female traits.

Thériault, Pascale 08 1900 (has links)
This master thesis focuses on the action heroine trope in video games. The video game culture, which glorifies militarized masculinity, tends to sexualize female characters and to neglect the preferences of female players by targeting men and boys. The action heroine trope is born from the desire to include women in the video game culture. These female protagonists are often sexualized, such as the famous Lara Croft, but they also have a subversive potential by invading a traditional masculine space. This master thesis analyzes a few characters that are modeled and reshaped on the action heroine trope.

The wild animal's story : nonhuman protagonists in twentieth-century Canadian literature through the lens of practical zoocriticism

Allmark-Kent, Candice January 2015 (has links)
Despite the characteristic cross-disciplinarity of animal studies, interactions between literary and scientific researchers have been negligible. In response, this project develops a framework of practical zoocriticism, an interdisciplinary lens which synthesizes methodologies from science, animal advocacy, and literature. A primary focus of this model is the complex relationship between literary representations of animals, scientific studies of animal cognition, and practical and theoretical work advocating animal protection. This thesis proposes that the Canadian wild animal stories of Ernest Thompson Seton and Charles G.D. Roberts operate at an intersection of these three factors. Their potential for facilitating reciprocal communication has not been recognized, however, due to their damaged representation within Canadian literature as a consequence of the Nature Fakers controversy. By re-contextualizing and re-evaluating these texts this project illuminates the unique contributions made by these authors. It also offers new evidence of the intersecting discourses and ideologies that stimulated the controversy. Re-defining the genre has enabled this project to uncover a selection of twentieth-century Canadian texts that perpetuate its core aims and characteristics. This project suggests that after the Nature Fakers controversy, the wild animal story diverged into two new forms: ‘realistic’ and ‘speculative.’ By placing the wild animal story in relation to a broader canon of Canadian literature, this thesis identifies three distinct modes of animal representation. These methods of relating to literary animals in the Canadian context are the fantasy of knowing the animal, the failure of knowing the animal, and the acceptance of not-knowing the animal. This novel characterization of Canadian literature is a product of the diverse, interdisciplinary approaches offered by the practical zoocriticism framework.

Falk Renström, Johannes January 2019 (has links)

Santos, Aline Peterson dos January 2016 (has links)
This M.A. thesis discusses the protagonists in Burgess’ A Clockwork Orange and the films A Clockwork Orange and Vinyl, directed by Stanley Kubrick and Andy Warhol, respectively, comparing how such characters represent the individual in society. The thesis draws on the theories by Joseph Campbell, Antonio Candido, and Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes, concerning the characters, and by Italo Calvino, concerning Lightness. The three works are analyzed aiming at the understanding of the peculiarities present in each one of the narratives, as well as the trajectory of the protagonist in the three narratives, until they reach the end. The concepts of good and evil, maintained under conceptions established in our society, are threatened when the protagonist is subjected to the Ludovico Technique, treatment that has the objective of reducing the quantity of prisoners in jails. For that, it eliminates the power of choice of the individual, who happens to be able to practice acts of kindness only, since all exposure to evil brings him to pain and to unbearable discomfort.

Dahne, Lovisa, Matthis, Alexi January 2016 (has links)
