[pt] Este trabalho estuda o uso do metadiscurso em artigos
pesquisa em diferentes
culturas, áreas disciplinares e seções do artigo, tendo
escritos e reflete a
construção de conhecimento em diferentes áreas
disciplinares. A pesquisa adota
como base teórica a abordagem sociointeracional de
linguagem, a teoria da
construção social do conhecimento e princípios da retórica
contrastiva. O corpus
a seção do artigo.
culturas e comunidades disciplinares. / [en] This research studies the use of metadiscourse in research
articles in different
cultures, disciplinary areas and article sections, aiming
at investigating how this
rhetorical device varies in different linguistic and socio-
cultural contexts,
contributes to the construction of meaning in written
texts and reflects the
construction of knowledge in different disciplinary areas.
This work adopts as
theoretical basis a sociointeractional approach to
language, the theory of social
construction of knowledge and principles of contrastive
rhetoric. The research
corpus is composed of 24 scientific articles, divided into
two languages
(Portuguese and English), two disciplinary areas
(Biomedical Sciences and
Linguistics, Letters and Arts), and four sections
(Introduction, Methodology,
Results and Discussion). The study of variation between
texts written in English
and Portuguese shows that there are differences in the use
of metadiscourse items
which can focus on micro or macroorganization of the
scientific article.
Interdisciplinary variation shows that scientific texts
can be written either in a
subjective or objective manner, and that knowledge
construction in different
disciplinary communities can be based either on ideas or
facts. As to research
article sections, this study shows that the use of
metadiscourse varies according to
writers´ intention to reach rhetorical objectives in each
section. This research
study reinforces both the possibility and necessity to
focus on metadiscourse and
language under a sociointeractional perspective,
confirming that academic writing
is interactive, and showing that the construction of
meaning in texts and the
construction of knowledge vary in different cultures and
disciplinary communities.

[pt] EXPERIÊNCIA VITAL E FILOSOFIA PLATÔNICA / [en] VITAL EXPERIENCE AND PLATONIC PHILOSOPHYMARCUS REIS PINHEIRO 05 July 2004 (has links)
e a retórica (cap.2).
aprendiz.
[en] This thesis claims that a philosophical understanding, in
Plato, may only
happen correctly whenever it comes through a vital
experience. It intends to
highlight the personal and deep aspects of philosophical
experience. The thesis
supports that, in Plato, philosophy is a kind of experience
that, although being
strictly rational, the whole soul engages in it. It has
four chapters. The first and
second present the psykhagogikos aspect of philosophy,
analyzing Plato`s relation
with Greek poetry (chap. 1) and rhetoric (chap. 2). In the
first chapter, we claim
that, despite all Plato`s criticism against poetry, he
still retain an essential aspect
of it - psykhagogia - as a necessary part of philosophy.
The second chapter
supports that there is an aspect of rhetoric - also
psykhagogia - that must be
present in philosophy so that knowledge might be inscribed
in the soul of the
student. The third chapter analyses Plato`s criticism
against the written word,
present in The Seventh Letter and the Phaedrus. We claim
that philosophy
depends on a personal process that is not assured by being
described through
words: it is necessary, first, to be felt by a vital
experience, so that it may become
alive in one who knows. At last, the forth chapter presents
the notion of dialectic
in the Republic as a conversion. The notion of conversion
confirms this thesis
because it claims that the rational philosophical process
intends a personal and
deep transformation in the student of philosophy.

Previous issue date: 2008-05-09 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / Opinion articles have an important symbolic function of, seemingly, sharing the
paper s opinion by covertly bolstering up the assertion that the other sections,
conversely, are pure facts or reports . Once signed, they not necessarily represent
the paper ideological stance (O Estado de São Paulo); however, Kitis & Miliapes
(1996) claim that by being in it, they allow the readership to invest them with the
same authority and reliability ascribed to the newspaper. In so being, we can use for
the opinion article the very same Fowler s words (1991), when he claims that what
distinguishes an editorial is not the expression of values and beliefs, but the textual
strategies being used to stand out the speech acts of values and beliefs . This work
analyses Gaudêncio Torquato s articles, published on a weekly basis, in O Estado de
São Paulo, from the viewpoint of the Critical Linguistics , which proposes that
analysis using appropriate linguistic tools, and referring to relevant historical and
social contexts, can bring ideology, normally hidden through habitualization of
discourse, to surface for inspection , Fowler (1991: 89). While the focus of the
traditional analysis discourse is on the meanings established between sentences and
utterances, in CDA the focus is on the selections which are made in constructing
texts, on factors that constrain and determine these selections, and on their effect.
According to Charteris-Black (2004), metaphor is one of these conscious linguistic
choices that conceals underlying social processes, and metaphor analysis can aid in
the identification of implicit textual content, and metaphor constitutes verbal evidence
for an underlying system of ideas or ideology . Kress & Hodge (1993: 15) propose
that ideology involves a systematically organized presentation of reality . With this is
mind, the authors claim that metaphor is vital in creating such a presentation of
reality. Stemming from a corpus of five opinion articles, the aim of this research is, by
means of a metaphor-based study, to understand the functioning of this linguistic
resource. It is through metaphor that the author expresses his attitudinal position on
x
the country s political developments, and manages at the same time to directly avoid
threatening the face of the people involved, send out his message and persuade his
readership. In my analysis, I resort basically to the Systemic-Functional Linguistics
(Halliday, 1985; 1994), and its contributors, the Relevance Theory (Sperber & Wilson
(1986; 1995), the Goatly s notions (1997) and the developments the theories have
been receiving. According to Eggins (1994), what differentiates the SFL is that it
seeks to develop a theory of language as a social process and a methodology which
allows detailed and systematic description of linguistic patterns. The SFL is
considered the more suitable theory-methodological approach to Critical Discourse
Analysis (Fowler, 1991); Fairclough, 1992). On the other hand, Charteris-Black
(2004) and Fairclough (1999a) analyse metaphor based on Halliday s Functional
Enquanto
mais adequada à Análise Crítica do Discurso (Fowler, 1991;
Fairclough, 1992).

Previous issue date: 2008-06-12 / Self-help books have presented the largest growth and are also responsible for the new best-sellers in the market. Marketdata research institute estimates that the world market of self-help books generated about US$8.5 billions in 2003. They reckon the total size of this market can reach more than US$11 billions in 2008. We can note that the self in self-help, as well as the self in self-learning, means learning without being followed by a teacher. It does not mean self-help, but that one can help him or herself with the help of a book, written by someone else. There is a writer passing their ideas on to a reader, hoping they will be accepted. Thus, the question is: how can a self-help book writer convince their reader of the validity of their statements?
Persuasion, mainly implicit persuasion, is not always realized by clearly persuasive adjectives and adverbs, but also by certain lexico-grammatical choices which, in specific contexts, make a text extremely persuasive. This kind of persuasion takes place gradually throughout the text and may be extremelly efficient.
Considering the undeniable success of these books, I found it justifiable to develop a study about the self-help text, analyzing it according to the point of view of the discourse, focusing on how the writer transmits his idea in order to get the reader s adhesion.
To do so, I will use the critical discourse analysis which, by studying the social and historical situation of a text, aims at bringing to the readers knowledge the patterns of values and beliefs codified in the language invisible for those who take discourse as natural . I hope to analyze the lexico-grammatical choices made by the writer in order to persuade, explicitelly or implicitelly, the reader in the self-help books. For this, I will use Halliday s (1994) systemic-functional linguistics, specially the simultaneous action of the ideational, interpersonal and textual metafunctions, and also some recent contributions in terms of the writer s positioning towards the text and content evaluation. So, I will use, specially, in Martin (2000; 2003), that, with the token nocion value, frame (Goatly 1997; Bednarek 2005); in crypto-argumentacion (Kitis e Milapídes, 1996); textual world (Downing, 2003) and Semino (1997) / Os livros de auto-ajuda constituem um dos segmentos com maior crescimento e é também o responsável pelos novos best-sellers do mercado.

Previous issue date: 2008-06-23 / The present study is a social semiotic account of a newspaper editorial, which draws
on both Halliday s (1985, 1994) Systemic Functional Linguistics and Fairclough s
Critical Discourse Analysis. Of particular interest is the persuasion explicit or implicit
present in an editorial from the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. The aim of a
critical linguistic analysis of a text is to unfold the meanings hidden in its lexical,
semantic, syntactic structures as they gradually mediate the general meaning, and to
observe how these meanings help to build its ideological content. As Fairclough
(1989: 1) states, consciousness is the first step towards emancipation ; he also
notes how differences in style or textual strategies in these texts suggest a voice ,
characteristic of the newspaper in which they are published. What distinguishes the
editorial is not the values-and-beliefs offered, but the use of textual strategies that
accentuates the act of speech of values-and-beliefs offered, he adds. There are
always different ways to say the same thing, and these ways are not accidental
alternatives: differences in expression bring ideological distinctions and so bring
differences in representation. Thus, I examine an editorial taking into account the
pragmatic dimension of this genre, which involves the notion of frame, as a
framework that contains the question of intertext in itself, and therefore the notions of
reported speech; of crypt-argumentation or secret argumentation; and of footing. The
latter heralds the author´s position through the concept of appraisal, which involves
the notion of tokens of attitude. The analysis, having these theoretical supports as
background, will apply the proposal of fallacies and enthymemes in argumentation,
by Lauerbach (2007) and by Toulmin (1958) respectively. And, based on evaluative
dimensions by Lemke (1998), I will check (a) the linguistic nature of evaluation within
such text; (b) the lexico-grammatical items that express this evaluation; and (c) how
(a) and (b) concur for construing the editorial argumentations and, in last instance, for
instância, esse conteúdo seja não somente captado, mas também conquistado;
Assim, examino o editorial considerando a dimensão
A análise,
contida nesse texto

Previous issue date: 2008-08-13 / The amount of research about interviews in talk-shows and the way this gender is
approached is scarce in Brazil. In this perspective, the present study aims at
analyzing the persuasion which permeates the conversation turns in an interview with
the deputy Denise Frossard, on Jô talk show program, with a view to answering the
following question: what discursive resources Jô Soares and Denise Frossard mostly
employ to persuade their audience in the interview? Considering the dynamics of the
realizations of various meaning combinations which this analysis implies, my study
has an eclectic theoretical support, including Fowler (1991), based on Critical
Discourse Analysis, and theories complementing the Systemic-Functional Linguistics,
particularly the interpersonal metafunction. In so being, I make use of these
persuasive notions which help me understand both explicit and implicit persuasion
that pervade the interview interloctions, according to the following elements:
dialogism (Bakhtin, 1981); frame and footing (Goffman, 1981), smuggling information
(Luchjenbroers e Aldridge, 2007); directed information (Coffin e O Halloran, 2006),
notions of cryptic-argumentation (Kitis e Milapides, 1996) and finally Analysis of
Conversation (Eggins e Slade, 1997), which sheds light on the existing phenomena
in the conversation turns. The data showed that amongst the occurrent persuasive
elements, the implicit ones are the most frequent in the speech of the interlocutors.
However, the host resorts to a discourse apparently friendly and capable of
facilitating the exposure of the interviewee s opinion. The interviewee in most of her
Nessa perspectiva, o presente
entrevista realizada com a deputada Denise Frossard, no talk show Programa do Jô,
seguintes elementos: o dialogismo (Bakhtin, 1981); o frame e o alinhamento

Previous issue date: 2009-08-17 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / In recent years in Brazil, there has been growing interest in questions related to reading, literacy and all the social changes resulting from these practices in the field of critical linguistics. There is, however, still a huge field to be exploited in this area. Reading and writing are the basis for making a critical reading of the world, and the process of the awareness of citizen s rights and duties starts from reading and writing. According to Fowler (1991), all aspects of linguistic structure (lexical decisions, syntactic choices, etc) contain ideological meaning. All institutions are socially, economically and politically located, and anything that is either said or written about the world is made from a particular ideological position. The present study makes a critical textual analysis of a newspaper editorial from the Folha de São Paulo, Endless Outrages , published on September 19th, 2006, using Halliday s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and the following resources and discursive strategies: (a) the concepts of phallacy and enthymeme presented by Lauerbach (2007); (b) information smuggling' proposed by Luchjenbroers & Aldridge, (2007); (c) frames according to Bednarek (2005); (d) crypto-argumentation by Kitis, E. & Milapides, M. (1996), (e) the dog-whistle strategy, Coffin & O Halloran (2006) and (f) reported discourse (LAUERBACH, 2006). The findings suggest that the text, using such resources and strategies, aims at convincing the reader, in an implied way, to accept the fact that the President was to blame for the events described, without, however, impairing the newspaper s impartiality / Nos últimos anos, no Brasil, tem havido uma preocupação singular com as questões
É a partir

(1996), (e) dog-whistle politics , Coffin & O Halloran (2006) e (f) o discurso relatado
(Lauerbach, 2006).
contudo, comprometer a imparcialidade do jornal

Previous issue date: 2010-02-03 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This study, which is part of the Project DIRECT (LAEL-PUC/SP), aims to
analyze written narratives produced by students in 5th and 8th grades of two
public schools in Santana, a town of Amapá State. The corpus consists of 90
narratives written by students from these two schools (one located in the urban
area and other in the outskirts). We have chosen to focus on narratives (Martin
& Rose, 2008), because we do believe that working with this genre is a powerful
tool in order to approach culture and encourage learners to come closer to the
world of reading, besides the fact that narrative is the genre which is most
present and dealt with at school. The narrative chosen was "The legend of
Açaí , typical of the Amazon region. The data were collected during the
production activity of text, in which the teacher-researcher told the story to the
students and asked them to reproduce it. The research aims to carry out a
qualitative/quantitative data, analyzing textual structure, cohesion (conjunctive
elements) and evaluative lexical items (appraisal). To do this we used the
theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 1985, 1994;
Halliday and Matthiessen, 2004; Halliday and Hasan, 1976 and their followers)
who sees language as a result of socio-cultural context, with its focus is the
study of language in use, focusing on the social nature of meaning production
and the cultural and situational context of the speakers/writers. The analysis
were carried out with the support of methodological tools offered by the Corpus
Linguistics (LC) (Berber-Sardinha, 2004), more specifically the computer
program WordSmith Tools (Scott, 1999). The results lead us to believe that the
difficulties of writing submitted by students in question seem to be related more
to the mismatch between age-range than the socioeconomic context, since the
students the context of the periphery, in many respects, proved to have fewer
problems writing that his colleagues in the urban context / Este trabalho, inserido no Projeto DIRECT (LAEL-PUC/SP), tem como objetivo
A pesquisa
analisando a estrutura textual, a coesão (elementos conjuntivos) e o léxico
avaliativo atitudinal (avaliatividade).
As análises
Programa Computacional WordSmith Tools (Scott, 1999).

Previous issue date: 2008-11-13 / This dissertation is located in the field of the Linguistic Historiography and it has for theme the construction of the argument in the Sermon of First Dominga of priest Antonio Vieira's Advent. In order to carry through this task, the following objectives were drawn: examine in the selected sermon the language, the history and the role of rhetorical figures that act in the organization of Priest Antonio Vieira's sermon as a persuasion mechanism. We found in the XVII century, more particularly in Vieira, a man imbued with the Baroque spirit and very concerned with Social-Christian causes, characterizing the fight between the material and the spiritual world, the possibility to verify the relationship between language and history that allows us to know the sermon amid its production context, at the same time in which allows us to update it at the light of current theories. In Vieira's peculiar Rhetoric, fruit of his Jesuit education, there is innovation, daring, clarity and objectivity. Such peculiarity does not just result from the favoring of linguistic mechanisms available in the language, but also by the speaker's cultural luggage, verified in practicing the persuasion. There are many studies on Vieira's work. However, this research is justified for looking for a historical approach, in addition to accomplishing the study of the arrangement and the elocution of the chosen Sermon in a historical-graphical approach. This was based theoretically on the foundations of the Linguistic Historiography that allows for rereading of the facts regarding the language and its history, through the principles of contextualization, immanence and theoretical adaptation. The analysis of the sermon demonstrated that the historical-linguistic marks and the persuasion mechanisms found in it reveal the typical thinking of the baroque man and that the success of Vieira's preaching is achieved by its peculiar style, involving rhetorical figures and the interaction between speaker and listener / Esta dissertação situa-se no campo da Historiografia Lingüística e tem por tema a construção da argumentação no Sermão da Primeira Dominga do Advento do padre Antonio Vieira.

Previous issue date: 2006-10-02 / Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo / This dissertation was born from the idea to make the analysis of the character
Virgília
she begins at Posthumous Reminiscences of Brás Cubas
through the
figures of language. To its achievement were used like teoric foundation the
concepts of the next researchers: Roland Barthes, Chaïm Perelman, Paul Ricoeur,
Frederick Nietzche, Olivier Reboul, Quintiliano, Aristóteles, Gèrard Genette, Tereza
Lúcia Halliday, Walter de Castro, Hélio de Seixas Guimarães e Ana Cecília Lessa,
Beth Brait, Vladímir Propp, Soren Kierkegaard, Márcio Gimenes de Paulo, Henri
Bergson e Douglas Colin Muecke. They all, in a way or another, directly or indirectly,
take their researches at Rhetoric. This subject was very important to the Greek
people because, since the Antiquity, it was necessary to its intelectual upbringing,
even though its main goal was to teach speaking and writing well , in other words, its
objective was to study the ways of persuation present in the speech. And, how it´s
known that there isn t free speech second intentions
the Greeks were one of the
first people to realize that the maintenance of the power come of the dominance of
the persuasive techniques . This way, based on these concepts, looked for to put in
evidence the rhetoric elements, or rather, the figures of the language used by Brás
Cubas, the narrator of the Posthumous Reminiscences , in the description of Virgília.
But, to that, it didn t lose sight this autodiegetic narrator, even though his voice is the
only one to tell the respective narrative, and, of course, that he will take this
opportunity to denounce the social injustices, even if he has to expose himself (as
Henri Bergson e Douglas Colin Muecke.
A importância
