The Relationship Between Scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised and Scores on the Wide Range Achievement TestHarris, Joneel J. 05 1900 (has links)
The problem with which this study is concerned is establishing the relationship between scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and the Wide Range Achievement Test (WRAT). The findings indicated a highly significant positive relationship between the WISC-R and WRAT, yielding a a < .001 for all rs between WISC-R Verbal, Performance, and Full Scale IQs and WRAT Reading, Spelling, and-Arithmetic. Analysis of WISC-R and WRAT subtests revealed slightly less significant relationships (a of at least .01) for all possible combinations. Results of this study indicate the possibility of using the WRAT Arithmetic score as a quick estimate of general level of achievement.

During the spring term of 2013, national exams were conducted for the first time in the Swedish schools for 6th graders. The exams involving the science subjects were however not used as a basis for the student’s grades, but were instead used as trial exams. It did however not take long for criticism to befall upon the notion of national exams. In 2014, The teacher association and Sweden’s student council proposed for the tests to be voluntary for the grades 6 to 9. They felt that the tests were too many and that they had a negative effect on both students and teachers alike. The government decided two years later, 2016, that the national exams should be voluntary. The goal of this essay is to further raise the understanding of the 6th grade biology exam. This examination will present to what extent the biology exam tests the knowledge and skill of the students by comparing the exam against the requirements listed in Lgr 11. In order to accomplish this, text analysis will be used as the method, and Blooms revised taxonomy will be used as the analytical model. With this as a base, two questions have been raised. To what extent is the knowledge and skills tested in the national exams for the 6th grade? How well does the national exam corresponds to the requirements stated in Lgr 11 regarding the knowledge and skills that should be tested in the exams, as well as the extent of these. The conclusion shows a high consistency between the requirements stated in Lgr 11 and the national biology exams. However, not all knowledge and skills were being tested equally. The number of questions for each different subject varied. The conclusion also gives biology 6th grade teachers the possibility to make up for the lack of questions in the areas that are currently lacking.

Phylogeny, taxonomy and species delimitation of water mites and velvet mitesStålstedt, Jeanette January 2017 (has links)
This study is part of the Swedish Taxonomy Initiative (STI) - one of the most ambitious all taxa biodiversity inventories in the world. One of the pillars in STI is to support taxonomic research on the most neglected taxonomic groups with the aim to lift the level of knowledge of biodiversity in the country. There is still a lot to be discovered, especially in the microscopic world, and this includes mites. Many aspects of mite biology and diversity are poorly known, such as species richness, abundance, distribution, lifestyle and behavior of species. Mites inhabits all sorts of aquatic, terrestrial, arboreal and parasitic habitats, nevertheless even in well-studied systems mites are often overlooked. Despite being among the smallest of arthropods, they are of medical and economical importance and may be very abundant in the ecosystems they inhabit. This thesis focuses on Parasitengona (Acariformes: Prostigmata), one of the most diverse taxa among the arachnids. It includes the aquatic Hydrachnidia (water mites) and the terrestrial Trombidia (e.g. velvet mites, chiggers). A unifying characteristic of Parasitengona is their complex life cycle of active and inactive stages, parasitic larvae and predatory deutonymphs and adults. They typically parasitize and prey on arthropods, except the chiggers which have vertebrates as hosts. The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the phylogeny and taxonomy of Parasitengona with emphasis on the Swedish fauna. To achieve this, mites were collected from different localities throughout the country between the years 2007-2016. Water mites were sampled with a hand net. Larvae of terrestrial Parasitengona were collected with sweeping nets and sorted out from malaise trap samples from the Swedish Malaise Trap Project. To collect the adults Berlese-Tullgren extractor and pitfall traps were used as well as hand collecting and sifting with litter reducer. The material collected abroad was kindly provided through collaboration. Methods used in the papers included morphometrics, multivariate analyses, experimental rearing, DNA extraction and sequencing, Bayesian phylogenetic analyses and molecular species delimitation. In paper I and II, we combine molecular species delimitation models and morphological data to resolve taxonomical issues. This integrative taxonomic approach of combining data resulted in Piona dispersa Sokolow, 1926 as a valid species and redescriptions, new synonyms and neotypes provided for Erythraeus phalangoides (De Geer, 1778), E. cinereus (Dugès, 1834) and E. regalis (C.L. Koch, 1837). Based on the new inventories we produce an updated and annotated checklist of 105 terrestrial Parasitengona species for Fennoscandia in paper III, and use metadata to increase the knowledge on distribution, habitat preferences, life stages and abundance. Out of these, 20 species are new findings for the region and five are potential new species for science. In paper IV, we provide a molecular phylogeny of Parasitengona based on the genes 18S, 28S and COI for 80 taxa with a sampling focus on the terrestrial lineages. Based on the results we offer a revised higher-level classification of the group. In particular the analyses supported Tanaupodoidea Thor, 1935 as a separate superfamily, but Trombiculoidea Ewing, 1929 was not monophyletic and was synonymized, along with Chyzerioidea Womersley, 1954, with Trombidioidea Leach, 1815. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 3: Manuscript. Transparens och jämförbarhet i IFRS 17 : En undersökning utifrån ett intressentperspektiv / Transparency and comparability in IFRS 17 : A review from a stakeholder perspectiveJarl, Pontus, Karlsson, Jonas January 2019 (has links)
After approximately 20 years of work, a new accounting standard will take effect January 1st, 2022. The standard is called International Financial Reporting Standards 17 (IFRS) and will replace the current interim standard IFRS 4. During this time The International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) has worked out several proposals for modeling IFRS 17. In year 2013IASB published a so called revised Exposure Draft (ED) where companies and organizations were invited to comment on the proposals. These comments, so called Comment Letters (CL) are of significant nature for how the final standard will be designed. Thus, the CL made up the empirical basis of this study. IFRS 4 has received a lot of criticism for not being comparable and transparent enough. This problem subsequently led to the purpose of this study. The purpose of this study is to ascertain if stakeholders who commented on IASB:s revised ED from 2013 consider that the proposals in the ED will lead to a more comparable and transparent accounting standard. Furthermore, the study aims to find out if there are patterns in stakeholders’ attitudes towards the revised ED and if so, what those patterns are. The revised ED generated 198 CL in total from several different stakeholders. The study’s selection process ended with a total of 67 CL which made up the empirical material. Because the purpose of this paper is to analyze and interpret the stakeholders’ attitudes towards the proposals in the revised ED, a qualitative content analysis will be performed. It will include elements of both an inductive and deductive research approach. The results of the study show that a majority of stakeholders agree with the proposals in the revised ED from 2013 and that it will lead to a more transparent and comparable accounting standard. However, many stakeholders point out that several of the proposals are complex and hard to understand. Some of the comments from the companies and organizations that have been analyzed expresses that the complexity is a factor that may damage comparability and transparency. The most distinct patterns from the CL that have been analyzed are that the proposals constitute an improvement compared to the previous accounting standard as well as earlier proposals from the IASB and that the proposals in the revised ED will lead to increased comparability and transparency. Nevertheless, many stakeholders’ express concerns that the implementation process will be very time- and resource consuming. The study’s conclusion shows that the majority of stakeholders are in favor of the proposals in the revised ED. However, many also raise concerns regarding the complexity in the proposals and the lack of guidance. In light of these conclusions, IASB is on the right path to achieve their objective of an accounting standard with a higher degree of transparency and comparability than the current one.

A socio-cultural case study of a primary school system in Venda, South Africa.Muthivhi, Azwihangwisi Edward 22 December 2008 (has links)
The present study examines the relationship between the practices of schooling
and classroom teaching and learning on the one hand and learners’ cognitive
development and functioning on the other. The study uses innovative system of
ideas in developmental and educational psychology, originally formulated by Lev
Vygotsky to investigate the interrelations between learning, instruction and
development.
Carried out in a rapidly changing socio-cultural context of Venda, South Africa,
the study examines the realities of schooling practices that exhibit both continuity
with the past practices of society and some profound transformations that
together lead to a multi-dimensional and a complex picture of cognitive
development in learners. By examining the relations between the cultural
practices of schooling and its socio-historical context on the one hand, and the
consequent psychological process on the other hand, the present study offers an
opportunity for exploring processes that may be more opaque in relatively stable
socio-cultural contexts of schooling.
The observations on the history of schooling in South Africa in general, and in
Venda in particular, support the theoretical formulation that particular practices of
schooling, themselves originating from and continuing larger social-historical
processes, represent contexts in which learning and development take place and
are shaped. The empirical investigations revealed that even the socio-cultural
contexts of schooling characterized by strong ruptures, such as in South Africa,
nonetheless carry on some vestiges of their past practices that affect today’s
learning and development of learners.
The study concludes, extending the prevailing theoretical formulation, that the
social and cultural setting of schooling in Venda is multifaceted; manifesting
xvi.
instances of indigenous practices, the traditions of past missionary practices, as
well as the traditions of the past, apartheid schooling. By taking into account
these socio-cultural influences, the study provides crucial insights into the
regularities of cognitive and conceptual developmental processes taking place in
conditions of rapid social change in the course of the schooling of today’s
children in Venda. The study furthers our understanding about the regularities of
the socio-cultural and historical processes of schooling in conditions of rapid
social change, and concludes by proposing ways of improving contemporary
educational practice in South Africa, grounded in sound psychological knowledge
and research about school transformation and classroom teaching and learning
improvement.

INTRODUCTION: The Addenbrooke\'s Cognitive Examination Revised (ACE-R) allows evaluation of five cognitive domains, namely: Attention and Orientation, Memory, Fluency, Language and Visuospatial. It is particularly useful in differentiating Alzheimer\'s disease (AD) from frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The instrument was adapted to the Brazilian population and this version has already been published by the authors. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the performance of healthy individuals and patients with mild probable AD in the ACE-R Brazilian version. METHODS: The test was administered to 31 AD patients and to 114 cognitively preserved elderly. Sixty two subjects of this healthy group were adequately matched to the patients for age and education. The participants included were aged 60 years, had 4 years of schooling and did not show depressive symptoms, defined by a score > 7 in the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Cognitive impairment was defined by a score < 123 in the Mattis Dementia Rating Scale (DRS), while control scores were 123 in the DRS. Normative data were extracted from the whole sample of healthy subjects. We correlated scores in the ACE-R with those in Memory tests from the BCB-Edu, with Verbal Fluency Tests (Fruits and F.A.S.) and with the Frontal Assessment Battery. Data were analyzed with Chi-square test, Students t test and Mann-Whitney test. The influence of age/educational level in ACE-R scores was investigated by ANOVA and Bonferroni Multiple test (normal distribution data) as well as by Kruskal-Wallis test and the Minimum Significant Difference test (non-normal distribution data). Pearsons and Spearmans correlation indexes were used to assess the relationship between performance in the ACE-R and other cognitive tests. The accuracy of the battery was investigated by ROC curve analysis. RESULTS: Mean (SD) age / schooling found in the groups were 77.82 (6.58) / 10.05 (4.98) for the 62 controls and 78.03 (6.74) / 9.97 (5.19) for the patients, respectively. The healthy sample of 114 subjects was divided into three age groups (60-69, 70-79 and 80 years) and into three groups according to education (4-7, 8-11 and 12 years). The performance in the ACE-R subscales significantly correlated with that in the other cognitive instruments. The total scores from both ACE-R and DRS were strongly correlated between themselves. The educational status influenced the ACE-R sub-scores. Age interfered in the Memory, Fluency and in the ACE-R composite score. The cut-off point < 78 of ACE-R demonstrated 100% of sensitivity and 82.26% of specificity for the diagnosis of mild AD (AUC = 0,947). The VLOM cut-off point to determinate AD was > 3.22 (AUC = 0.836; sens. 67.74%; spec. 96.77% and PPV 91.73%). CONCLUSIONS: The Brazilian version of the ACE-R displayed high accuracy and great diagnostic properties for cognitive assessment in our milieu; also it was able to discriminate patients with mild AD from cognitively healthy individuals. In addition, the ACE-R efficiently assesses multiple cognitive domains that are commonly affected in the early stages of dementia. Normative data presented here represent useful parameters for the clinical use of the ACE-R in Brazilian elderly.

Validação de um questionário semiquantitativo de frequência alimentar e de seu Índice de Qualidade da Dieta Revisado para crianças e adolescentes de 9 a 13 anos utilizando biomarcadores dietéticos - Ribeirão Preto, SP / Validation of food frequency questionnaire and Brazilian Healthy Eating Index - Revised in children and adolescents from 9 to 13 years old with dietary biomarkers - Ribeirão Preto, SPHillesheim, Elaine 23 August 2017 (has links)
Introduction: Inadequate dietary intake is a cause of nutritional deficiencies, especially in childhood and adolescence, when the body is experiencing rapid growth and development. Therefore, it is fundamental to validate instruments that identify the dietary intake of children and adolescents and support the understanding of the health-disease process. Objectives: To assess the validity of nutrient intake estimate and total and component scores from Brazilian Healthy Eating Index - Revised (BHEI-R), both obtained from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (SFFQ), using dietetic biomarkers as a reference method, in children and adolescents aged 9 to 13 years in Ribeirão Preto - SP. Method: Methodological and validation study. Dietary intake was estimated by a SFFQ and calculated using the software Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) ®, and the following nutrients were estimated: myristic acid (C14:0), palmitic acid (C16:0), margaric acid (C17:0), stearic acid (C18:0), ?- linolenic acid (C18:3 ; ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5 ; EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (C22 : 6; DHA), ?-carotene, retinol, ?-tocopherol, and vitamins D, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folate, and B12. The dietary intake estimated by SFFQ was used to generate the BHEI-R scores. In addition to the original components of the BHEI-R, the modified components Total Vegetables without Legumes and Dark Green and Orange Vegetables without Legumes were calculated, in which the excess legumes from Meat, Eggs and Legumes component was not included. Biomarkers were analyzed in plasma: ?-carotene, ?-caroteno/total cholesterol (TC), retinol, ?- tocopherol, ?-tocopherol/TC, 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3], thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinamide, nudifloramide, pantothenic acid, pyridoxamine 5-phosphate (PMP), pyridoxal 5-phosphate (PLP), 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF), folate, vitamin B12, and creatine; or erythrocytes samples: C14:0, pentadecanoic acid (C15:0), C16:0, C17:0, C18:0, ALA, EPA e DHA. The associations of the nutrient intake estimate and BHEI-R scores with biomarkers concentrations were analyzed by Spearman correlation and partial correlation adjusted for energy, sex, age, and z-score for body mass index-for-age. Subjects were classified into quartiles according to nutrient intake estimates, BHEI-R scores and biomarkers and data were analyzed for quartile agreement between biomarkers vs. intake, comparison of biomarkers averages between the first and last intake quartiles, and trend analysis of biomarkers averages among the intake quartiles. Statistical analyzes were performed in software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) ®, version 20.0, with a significance level of 5%. Results: The sample was composed of 177 subjects, the mean age was 11.5 (SD 1.1) years old and 52% were female. The biomarkers ?- carotene (r=0,168), ?-carotene/TC (r=0,171), 25(OH)D3 (r=0,209), C14:0 (r=0,211), and EPA (r=0,166) showed positive adjusted correlations with their respective intakes estimated by SFFQ. After adjusting for confounding variables, DHA showed correlation only in females (r=0,280). Regarding BHEI-R, vegetable components were correlated with biomarkers ?- carotene and ?-carotene/TC, while the modified components Total Vegetables without Legumes and Dark Green and Orange Vegetables without Legumes were correlated with the biomarkers vitamin B12 (r=0,194) and 5-MTHF (r=0,201), respectively. All components rich in vegetable (legumes) and animal protein (meat, eggs) were correlated with plasma creatine (r=0,205 a 0,327). The component Milk was correlated with biomarkers C14:0 (r = 0,169), pantothenic acid (r = 0,233), PLP (r = 0,283), and vitamin B12 (r = 0265). Biomarkers of Bcomplex vitamins were inversely correlated with the components Whole Grains; Meat, Eggs and Legumes; and Saturated Fat (r= -0,178 a -0,282). There was no correlation between biomarkers and total IQD-R score. The associations between the biomarkers and the nutrients estimated by the SFFQ and the components Total Vegetables without Legumes, Dark Green and Orange Vegetables without Legumes, Milk, and Saturated Fat were confirmed by quartiles agreement >70%, difference between biomarker average between first and last quartile of intake and trend of biomarker average among quartiles of intake. Conclusion: The nutrient estimates and the BHEI-R components, both obtained through the SFFQ, were validated according to the associations described above and can be used in clinical and epidemiological studies investigating the association between health outcomes and dietary intake of children and adolescents age 9 to 13 years in Ribeirão Preto - SP.

Análise da validade, interpretação e preferência da versão brasileira da Escala Facial de Dor - Revisada, em duas amostras clínicas / Analysis of the validity, interpretability and preference of the Brazilian version of the Faces Pain Scale Revised in two clinic samples.Poveda, Claudia Ligia Esperanza Charry 27 February 2012 (has links)
The Faces Pain Scale Revised (FPS-R) is one of the most recommended tools in measuring the intensity of acute pain in children. The aim of this study was to assess validity, interpretability and preference of the Brazilian version of the FPS-R (FPS-R-B), in two different clinical samples. The first sample contained seventy-seven children, 6 to 12 years old and both sexes, undergoing venipuncture for blood sample (procedural pain). These children estimated their perceived pain intensity in FPS-R-B before and after venipuncture. Furthermore, after venipuncture, children were asked: a) to evaluate the intensity of their needle pain using the Coloured Analogue Scale (CAS), b) to indicate on the Faces scale the intensities representing the mild, moderate and severe pain, and c) to choose the scale they preferred and indicate the reasons for the preference. The second sample included fifty-three children, 6 to 12 years old and both sexes, undergoing minor surgery (postoperative pain). Following surgery, children were asked: a) to provide a rating of their current pain intensity using the FPS-R-B and the CAS, b) to indicate on the Faces scale the intensities representing the mild, moderate and severe pain, c) to estimate, on the FPS-R-B, the intensity of pain that their felt to warrant pharmacologic intervention (pain treatment threshold), and d) to choose the scale they preferred and indicate the reasons for the preference. The degree of concordance between FPS-R-B and CAS ratings (convergent validity), for both samples, was high and statistically significant Kendall\'s tau value was 0.75 for the first sample, and 0.79 for the second sample, (p<0.05) . FPS-R-B reflected the changes in pain intensity before and after venipuncture (concurrent validity): Wilcoxon Test z=- 6.24; p< 0.05. On the 0-10 scale for the FPS-R-B, the median and interquartile range (IQR) of the intensities that represented mild, moderate and severe pain were 2 (2-2), 4 (4-6) e 10 (10-10) respectively, for the first sample, and 2 (2-2), 6 (4-8) e 10 (10-10) respectively, for the second sample. The median and IQR for pain treatment threshold were 6 (4-10). Fifty-seven percent of children in the first sample and 64.8% in the second sample preferred the FPS-R-B. These proportions were statistically significant for the second sample (X²=5,453 p<0,05). Our data show that the FPS-R-B has similar statistical properties to the original. New evidences were presented regarding interpretability of the FPS-R by determining each children\'s treatment threshold and estimate of mild, moderate and severe pain. In this study, the FPS-R-B was preferred by the majority of children.

Estudo descritivo e compreensivo da capacidade adaptativa de pacientes adultos submetidos ao implante de cardioversor desfibrilador implantável / Descriptive study and understanding of adaptive capacity of adult patients undergoing implantation of implantable cardioverter defibrillatorGomes, Andréa Cristina Boldrim Pinto 25 November 2014 (has links)
The implantable cardioverter - defibrillator (ICD) is an electronic device used to treat patients with episodes or risk of cardiac arrest. It is able to continuously monitor of the patients heart rate for the recognition of fatal arrhythmias and the consequent triggering of shocks to reverse them. These electric shocks are classified as appropriate when the triggering occurs due to potentially fatal arrhythmias or inappropriate when the ICD fires the shock due to incorrect interpretation of the heart beat. In general, the shocks occur while patients are conscious, thus causing unexpected discomfort of strong intensity. The way the patient experiences such events, their reactions and their ability to cope with unexpected situations substantially influence their adaptation to the disease and to ICD. Furthermore, the device is a foreign object lodged inside the body, which refers to a malfunction of the heart and may arouse ambivalent feelings and difficulty of adaptation. Thus, the main objective of this study was to describe and understand how surveyed patients experienced and adapted to ICD implantation from the four variables related to operation of the device: the absence of shocks, the presence of appropriate shocks, the presence of inappropriate shocks and presence of (appropriate and inappropriate) mixed shocks. In order to carry out the study, the clinical-qualitative method was used. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 4 patients undergoing ICD implantation that represent each variable. Inclusion criteria were male patients with previous ischemic heart disease, ICD implantation as primary or secondary prevention procedure of sudden cardiac death (SCD ), aged between 50 and 70 years who had the implanted device for at least two years. All patients were selected from the outpatient clinic of the Clinical Unit of Cardiac Pacing of the Heart Institute - HC - USP (Hospital das Clinicas, Medical School, University of São Paulo). Data were analyzed having the Psychosomatic and Freudian Psychoanalytic referential and subsequently categorized by the Revised Operational Adaptive Diagnostic Scale (ROADS). The results have shown that adaptation (according to the concept used) to the impact of ICD and shock is directly linked to the impact of AMI and to the disease as a whole and that the reactions of patients on the different episodes seem analogous, showing that you can only understand psychic repercussions on the ICD from the understanding of the effects caused by the disease that led the patient to have the device implanted. One of the patients proved to be adapted to the illness and the ICD, although he has not experienced episodes of shock while the other three patients demonstrated to be somewhere along the adaptation process, having experienced psychic conflicts that influence their adaptive capacity. There is evidence that if psychological interventions are adopted, this adaptation process will occur much more effectively

Redovisningens roll i kreditgivningsprocessen / The role of accounting in the credit assessment processLiu, Ronny, Tannerfors, Hanna January 2014 (has links)
