Atomic decompositions and frames in Fréchet spaces and their duals

Ribera Puchades, Juan Miguel 11 May 2015 (has links)
[EN] The Ph.D. Thesis "Atomic decompositions and frames in Fréchet spaces and their duals" presented here treats different areas of functional analysis with applications. Schauder frames are used to represent an arbitrary element x of a function space E as a series expansion involving a fixed countable set {xj} of elements in that space such that the coefficients of the expansion of x depend in a linear and continuous way on x. Unlike Schauder bases, the expression of an element x in terms of the sequence {xj}, i.e. the reconstruction formula for x, is not necessarily unique. Atomic decompositions or Schauder frames are a less restrictive structure than bases, because a complemented subspace of a Banach space with basis has always a natural Schauder frame, that is obtained from the basis of the superspace. Even when the complemented subspace has a basis, there is not a systematic way to find it. Atomic decompositions appeared in applications to signal processing and sampling theory among other areas. Very recently, Pilipovic and Stoeva [55] studied series expansions in (countable) projective or inductive limits of Banach spaces. In this thesis we begin a systematic study of Schauder frames in locally convex spaces, but our main interest lies in Fréchet spaces and their duals. The main difference with respect to the concept considered in [55] is that our approach does not depend on a fixed representation of the Fréchet space as a projective limit of Banach spaces. The text is divided into two chapters and appendix that gives the notation, definitions and the basic results we will use throughout the thesis. The first one focuses on the relation between the properties of an existing Schauder frame in a Fréchet space E and the structure of the space. In the second chapter frames and Bessel sequences in Fréchet spaces and their duals are defined and studied. In what follows, we give a brief description of the different chapters: In Chapter 1, we study Schauder frames in Fréchet spaces and their duals, as well as perturbation results. We define shrinking and boundedly complete Schauder xviiframes on a locally convex space, study the duality of these two concepts and their relation with the reflexivity of the space. We characterize when an unconditional Schauder frame is shrinking or boundedly complete in terms of properties of the space. Several examples of concrete Schauder frames in function spaces are also presented. Most of the results included in this chapter are published by Bonet, Fernández, Galbis and Ribera in [13]. The second chapter of the thesis is devoted to study ¿-Bessel sequences, ¿-frames and frames with respect to ¿ in the dual of a Hausdorff locally convex space E, in particular for Fréchet spaces and complete (LB)-spaces E, with ¿ a sequence space. We investigate the relation of these concepts with representing systems in the sense of Kadets and Korobeinik [34] and with the Schauder frames, that were investigated in Chapter 1. The abstract results presented here, when applied to concrete spaces of analytic functions, give many examples and consequences about sampling sets and Dirichlet series expansions. We present several abstract results about ¿-frames in complete (LB)-spaces. Finally, many applications, results and examples concerning sufficient sets for weighted Fréchet spaces of holomorphic functions and weakly sufficient sets for weighted (LB)-spaces of holomorphic functions are collected. Most of the results are submitted for publication in a preprint of Bonet, Fernández, Galbis and Ribera in [12]. / Ribera Puchades, JM. (2015). Behind training : differentiation of self of a psychotherapy trainee

Van der Merwe, Sasja 06 1900 (has links)
Psychotherapy is an interpersonal encounter where a therapist collaborates with clients to facilitate a healing process. Due to the personal nature of the therapeutic encounter, the therapist requires the necessary skills and knowledge, as well as a differentiated sense of self. The importance of supporting the psychotherapy trainee’s own differentiation process seemed to have been neglected in research in recent years. In South Africa there has recently been increasing pressure to select larger groups of trainees which has the risk that the tending to differentiation would further be neglected. The purpose of this research study is to reemphasise the importance of differentiation of self of the psychotherapy trainee by examining my own process of differentiation during my psychotherapy training. This study introduces the reader to these concepts and explores psychotherapy training in general and the Unisa training method specifically. The research design of this study is autoethnography which falls in the realm of social constructionism and the coding method is Thematic Data Analysis. The research findings as reflected in the two global themes namely individuation; and gaining and strengthening authentic relationships, seem to accurately reflect the process of differentiation. The specific training method of the Unisa training team in combination with the way in which I engaged with this process seemed important for the facilitation of this process of differentiation. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Liminal spaces : therapeutic encounters between horses and adolescents

Terre Blanche, Stephanie 10 1900 (has links)
In this study, the intersections between Equine Assisted Psychotherapeutic interventions and adolescence are explored. Equine Assisted therapeutic work has recently gained much popularity in the field of psychology, due to many reported benefits, which include the value of the use of the horse as a tool in psychotherapy. Adolescence is acknowledged to be a difficult transitional phase, punctuated with many challenges, such as identity development. As this study is conducted by a trainee psychotherapist and researcher, the work also contains a reflexive exploration of these fields, with personal reflections regarding the researcher‟s own experience in the fields. This study is framed as a transtheoretical bricolage, which includes elements of reflexivity, heuristics, transpersonal, and phenomenological research approaches. Data was gathered from individual interviews with co-researchers, focus group interviews, personal reflections, and inclusion of non-verbal information from the horses who formed part of this study. Data analysis was done by means of a Thematic Data Analysis. The research findings reflect themes on different levels, which are: content themes, process themes, meta-reflections on the research process, and a meta-analysis of the research and individual developmental process which took place in the production of this work / Psychology / M. Survivance 101 : Community ou l’art de traverser la mutation du paysage télévisuel contemporain

Khazoom, Frédérique 12 1900 (has links)
During the 2000s, the American televisual landscape was deeply shaken by the arrival of the Internet. The quick growth of digital technologies and the emergence of new types of media forced a reluctant television industry to change; be that in production, creation or reception. This transition from a pre-digital to a digital form of television was particularly difficult for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC). In the midst of this defining moment in American television history came Community (NBC, 2009-2014; Yahoo!Screen, 2015), a sitcom that embodied and reflected the various transformations brought by the convergence of the Internet and television, as well as the consequences this confluence bore to that industry. From being broadcast on NBC’s Must-See TV lineup between 2009 and 2014 to then moving to Yahoo!’s online platform in 2015, Community’s journey in television revealed its multiple attempts at adapting to a media in mutation. Therefore, the inability of the series to survive an unstable television industry through both traditional and online means underlines the complexity pertaining to television’s transition to a digital era.

Normmedvetna lärares jämställdhetsperspektiv på undervisningen : En intervjustudie / Norm critical teachers’ teaching from a perspective of gender equality : An interview study

Brömster, Sandra January 2021 (has links)
The school system should be permeated by a perspective of gender equality. However, studies have shown that there are shortcomings in the work being done for gender equality; and the lack of gender equality manifests itself in several issues. Many of these can be attributed to gender norms, which is why Swedish school authorities advocate a norm critical approach. Yet, surveys have shown that teachers are lacking knowledge of gender norms. The purpose of this study is to investigate the views of norm critical elementary school teachers on how a gender equality perspective could permeate teaching in accordance with what is prescribed in the curriculum, in order to provide tools for how teachers could work with gender equality in their teaching. The study is grounded in a norm critical perspective and consists of qualitative interviews with six elementary school teachers perceiving themselves to be norm critical. The results indicate several possible ways of establishing a permeating gender equality perspective on teaching: strategies for dividing the opportunity to speak gender equally; reflective questions for identifying your own notions of gender; suggestions of exercises for challenging norms about gender and ethnicity; practical examples of representation in teaching material as well as ideas about how grouping and varied ways of working can contribute to gender equality. Many teachers were grounded in an intersectional perspective, but some teachers lacked knowledge of how different norms affect each other. Furthermore, several dilemmas of a norm critical gender equality approach were identified: to make gender differences visible without consolidating differences between the genders, and that being norm critical seems to presuppose a willingness to critically question oneself. This willingness presupposes being interested in the topic, but portraying gender equality as a question of interest is problematic. Additionally, the dilemma of turning the gender equality commitment into a set of practical tools while also acknowledging the risk of mechanizing it is discussed.

Dokumentární přístupy v pohyblivém obraze v současné umělecké praxi / Documentary Approaches in Contemporary Fine Art Moving Image

Bačíková, Alžběta Unknown Date (has links)
The Dissertation titled Documentary Approaches in Contemporary Fine Art Moving Image focuses on the practical and theoretical research of documentary approaches to videos and films in the art field. It notices especially the self-reflexive strategies as a consequence of critical approach towards the medium itself and lack of belief in its ability to mediate reality or truth. Attempts to convey reality by audiovisual means are accompanied by the reflection of the way this happens. The Dissertation also reflects on the uncertain relation between the documentary and truth, which has been described in art by the artist and theoretician Hito Steyerl. The examined artworks were made in the period between the beginning of 21st century, when the documentary turn was reflected intensively, and the present time. The selection of examples was strongly influenced by the local study of Israeli art in The Video Archive of the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv. Motives of conflict, violence and trauma resonating in studied videos and films influenced further selection and analysis of the authors’ documentary methods from a different context. In the selected works I can see particularly various forms of alienation effects and self-reflexive approaches. Using these procedures the artists highlight the constructedness of the audiovisual work and the way it was produced. Recurring formal principles have been stated. Reenactment of real events, revealing the way the work was produced or the artist’s position in the production process; these strategies indicate the uncertain relationship between the documentary work and reality. In the frame of these tendencies also reevaluation of the observational documentary strategies as something seemingly opposite to self-reflexive strategies is reviewed. Theoretical outcomes are continuously accompanied by author’s own art projects concentrated around the form of documentary portrait and its (de)construction. They experiment with the formal principles analyzed on a theoretical level.

Model / Model

Hládeková, Katarína Unknown Date (has links)
The dissertation thesis studies the extension of the context of the term model as a means of interpretation for Czech and Slovak post-conceptual works of art. Based on result of a historical excursion into the history of painting, sculpture and architecture, the thesis offers a new typology of a model which is exemplified on particular work of art of Czech and Slovak post-conceptual era in the first two decades of the 21st century. The historical part of the thesis concludes the following: model in the art is an emancipated form originating from different academic as well as layman discourse; emancipated model has a methaphorical layer and thus it reflects wide historical, cultural and social relations. The categories proposed include: a linear model, a physical model, a cognitive model and an immersive model. The linear model encompases the sketch themes and so-called visualization metaphors (graphs, charts, schemes, etc) and originates as a reaction to information saturation and complicated networks. The physical model is a form to architecture and hobby modelling, it is characterised by a simple, „sketchy“ structure reacting to social themes and individual and collective memory. The cognitive model points to the cognitive turn of the society, it evaluates the materialisation of mental space and explains the emancipated model as an open category. Finally, the immersive model interprets the medium of exhibition as a model form which is articulated by and artisitic manifesto or an architectural interference. Another form of immersion that is being discussed in the chapter about immersive models, is a photographic or 3 D computer illusion as a reaction to society‘s virtualisation. Simultaneously to theoretical-historical research, an artistic research was taking place which became the basis for the creation of different categories and typologies of model. Each proposed category thus includes a so-called author‘s note reflecting the practical part of the dissertation thesis.

"I am tattoo, tattoo is me" : A qualitative study about the meaning of tattoos for individuals and society.

Sjösten, Miranda, Sjögren, Josefin January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study is to seek an understanding of the individual perceptions of tattooed persons about the significance of their tattoos, as well as of tattoos on a general level. Furthermore, we intended to investigate how tattooed people perceive the surroundings' perceptions and attitudes based on the tattoos. The study has a qualitative approach with mainly an inductive approach, which, however, also includes some deductive elements. Furthermore, the study adopts idealism and constructivism as ontological positions with a hermeneutic and interpretivist epistemology. The collection of empirical material has been done through semi-structured interviews. Results in the study show that tattoos are a significant component of an individual's creation of identity which interacts with the individual's surroundings. The result also shows that the tattoos and their symbolism are linked to the individual's relationship to the environment and its role as a social being in which societal norms and perceptions are assigned and interpreted. Finally, the results show that tattoos and tattoos as an activity can reflect the contemporary society and its distinctive features.

Technikentwicklung als reflexiver Modernisierungsprozeß

Stückemann, Thomas 01 February 2000 (has links)
There are several means to analyse the intrinsic connection of technological development and social evolution in sociology today. The thesis examines technology and its development as part of social evolution from a system-theoretical point of view. Using this approach, terms like "technology" and "social evolution" are reformulated. "Technology" is a particular type of border of social systems, using the mode of causality in observing its environment; thus Technology is defined as the fixation of causal expectations. "Social evolution" is a social systems' structural change by the selection and reinforcement of variations, creating a singular history. In terms of sociology, any technological development is part of a wider developing social context. This is visualized by confronting the terms "progress" and "modernization"; both being concepts of sociology as well as of debates on technology and social development. By using technology, by giving way to innovation, and by limiting the use of technology, a given society tries to monitor and influence its own evolution. The thesis shows that these attempts become more complex, but not necessarily more effective. The fundamental properties of any evolution cannot be annulated --- the social evolution always remains unpredictable, even when evolutionary theories allow reflexive observations. In contrast to its predecessors the modern society constitutes a type of technology which is highly independent of any given social context. But this freedom is risky. Contextualizations and decision-makings imply a higher degree of reflexivity. In the case of technological development, both determinations and options increase at the same time. What is complex in technological development is its social, not its mere technical side. Any reflexive debate on technology has to reflect technology as a social issue.

Lussier, Anne Marie 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis, which deals with the interweaving of philosophy and literature in the work of French Enlightenment thinkers, seeks to shed light on Denis Diderot’s unique contributions to philosophical reflection on the novel, as well as to the exploration of the literary resources that make it possible to delve into philosophical issues through the novel. Beginning with an examination of Diderot’s explicit theories about writing narrative fiction, it argues that the outgrowth of his materialism and the disenchantment following his attempts at theatre reform upended the aesthetic and moral basis for the initial normative framework underpinning his analysis of how fiction is ideally written and received. It goes on to examine how Diderot, as a novelist, undertook an innovative and fruitful exploration of the unsuspected philosophical resources that narrative fiction offers. The final sections are devoted to a close reading of Jacques the Fatalist and His Master, beginning with an attempt to identify the main resources it deploys to train more lucid and critical readers of fiction. The thesis then seeks to show how this knowledge base, if successfully transmitted, ultimately leads the reader to engage in a genuine dialogue with the work, both in terms of the metaphysical and ontological issues raised by Jacques’ “fatalism” and the moral issues that ensue.
