Young queers getting together: moving beyond isolation and loneliness

Curran, Greg Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
Over the last decade, education-focused research/studies on young queers (or same-sex attracted young people) have highlighted the many problems or difficulties they face growing up in a homophobic, heterosexist society. Strategies to address these issues (proposed in numerous research articles and reports) have largely focused on the school setting. I argue that these strategies are limited by heterosexual norms, which regulate and contain in advance what is possible (for queers) within the formal school system. I examine the ways in which these heterosexual norms work to constrain the queer subject in education-focused research and studies on young queers. / Within this field of study, young queers have largely been characterized as victims: of homophobic abuse and harassment, and neglect by families and schools. They’re said to be lonely and isolated, at risk of attempted suicide, unsafe sex, drug and alcohol abuse, and homelessness. I argue that these representations convey a negative portrait of young queers as wounded subjects. I illustrate how the emphasis on the wounded queer subject can work against the interests of young queers. In particular, it obscures those queer perspectives involving agency: first, queer cultures and communities; second, the knowledge and experiences of those who have gained confidence in their queerness, who have queer social and sexual lives. These (agentic) queers can offer us ways of understanding how young queers move beyond isolation and loneliness. / This study highlights the importance, for many young queers, of having opportunities and spaces where they can connect with each other. Socialization and sexualization among young queers involves a certain openness being and doing queer a practice which is unintelligible within most education-focused research/studies on young queers. This is illustrated and explored through comparative analysis of queer subjectivities in two differentiated spheres: on the one hand education-focused research and studies relating to the school context, and on the other gay/lesbian/queer studies and literature relating to queer social and sexual contexts. The key contexts and themes examined here are: early sexual experience and beats, queer cultures and communities, and queer youth support and social groups.

[en] WHO CARES FOR THE CAREGIVER / [pt] QUEM CUIDA DO CUIDADOR

EUGENIO PAES CAMPOS 04 June 2004 (has links)
[en] The objective of the present thesis was to carry out an appraisal of the experience of a health team whose way of functioning allowed it to act as its own care-provider. The team was part of a health-care program for high blood pressure patients, structured according to the social support concept, and centered both around meetings of professionals of different areas and specialties, as well as support group meetings of patients. The thesis describes the program s structure and analyses the health team dynamics using interviews carried out with nine of the professionals who participated in it, while keeping the focus on the way they experienced their relationship. Based on their statements, it was shown and discussed the similarity between what had happened in the reported experience and the dynamics described by Winnicott concerning the concept of holding, and its need throughout adult life. It was concluded that a health team can be a care-provider of itself, as long as it can experience, within itself, similar dynamics to the relationship experienced in early development of a good enough holding.

Santos, Ana Raquel Silva 31 August 2015 (has links)
The increase in life expectancy transformed aging in a social issue and public health, requiring multiple actions in senior care, of which we quote the community groups. These spaces are generational and intergenerational socialization that strengthen social participation and comprehensive health care, providing citizenship, improved quality of life and social support. Thus, the present study aims to analyze the quality of life and social support among elderly participants and non-participants of companionship groups. The sample consisted of 297 participants in a quantitative and comparative study of these elderly, based on the application range of quality of life World Health Organization Quality of Life for the elderly and reduced Social Support Scale (Social Suport Questionnaire). Data were stored and analyzed with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences software / 19. The results demonstrate that, with respect to quality of life, participants living group scored higher in the dimensions: autonomy, present, past and future activities; social participation and in the total score, showing that they have higher quality scores of life when compared to elderly who do not participate in the third age group. On the other hand, the social support analysis did not differ in groups and not was related to quality of life too. We can attribute this equivalence because of sampling bias because the elderly living group established in intimate relationships in their group, as they are mostly unmarried and widowed; while in the neighboring group, relationships are established either by the spouse or the family support. Thus, the study of quality of life and social support in the elderly encourages new perspectives for social psychology applied to health, keeping a broader view in the study of aging positive variables, expanding social concern in the allocation of professional practice postures aimed to support groups.

Aimed to evaluate the technology group intervention in the waiting room as a strategy for care. Data collection occurred from February to May 2013, through three ways: participant observation groups in the waiting room; instrument check-list type based on the Q-sort of therapeutic factors described by Yalom (1975); individual interviews with group participants waiting room. The study included 160 people. The data were subjected to thematic analysis according to the assumptions of Lüdke and Andre (1986), with the aid of ATLAS.ti 6.2 software. Results are presented as two papers: Nursing intervention in the waiting room: a successful experience and Evaluation of group technology in the waiting room in a mental health service. The results showed that the technology group in the waiting room provided moments of reflection, knowledge, learning, listening and exchanges. Helped to elucidate the relationship between the theoretical knowledge with practical assistance on structuring and functioning of groups in the waiting room. Shown to be a potential and valuable for the development of educational and support coordinated by the nurse, users of a mental health service space. Was also identified by the presence of all therapeutic factors investigated in perspectives, service user and professionals who conducted the service in the waiting room. Thus, the intervention group in the waiting room favored the action of certain therapeutic factors that helped participants in coping with crisis situations and also allowed the exercise of citizenship, freedom of expression and the coexistence of different and also therapeutic opportunities for treatment and health education.

Dětské skupiny v poradenství v kontextu aktivní spolupráce rodiče / Children's groups in counseling in the context of the active cooperation with parents

Nováková, Marie January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis discusses the children's groups in counselling in the context of active parenting. It maps experiences of parents in groups from the point of view of mothers and therapists. The theoretical part focuses on the definition of the group psychotherapy, the specifics of child psychotherapy and the support groups. Furthermore, it focuses on the experiences of a parent of a problem child and its active role in the process of a child psychotherapy. It also considers the work of a therapist. The qualitative research is presented in the empirical part. Semi-structured interviews with 5 mothers and 4 therapists were conducted. These interviews were analysed based on the method of creating thematic categories. The evaluation of the data is also inspired by the method of grounded theory. The results show that the views of parents and therapists are the same in most areas. Both groups perceive the importance of a parent participating in the group. The group acts therapeutically for both the child and the parents. This affects the process of the whole therapy. KEYWORD: child psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, support groups, parent of a problem child, cooperation with parent

You never get a second chance for a first meeting : To form an alliance with youths from families with substance abuse, as a support groupleader

Zetterman, Ulf January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore what adolescents found important during the introductory meeting with the therapist, as well as which aspects of the initial meeting encouraged them to participate in a support group for codependents. Qualitative interviews were compiled of seven individuals in their early twenties whom had all completed a term at a treatment center for codependents in Stockholm. The transcpripts were thematized in three steps using thematic analysis. The resulting themes were explored from the viewpoint of the Working Alliance Theory. The main findings in this study were that the therapists made a strong alliance at an early stage with the adolescents. The warmth and the humanity of the therapists was a key factor that made an important difference among the adolescents. The therapists expression of authenticity, self- disclosure and flexibility played part in their experience as well. The environment and furnishings held inviting properties and helped create a relaxed atmosphere. Conclusions point to the significance of alliance, especially within youth, for whom issues are volatile, and whose families are struggling to manage what often are extremely disruptive situations. These often include problems with addiction of some sort.

Workplace support groups for people living with HIV and AIDS : challenges faced by social workers rendering occupational social work services

Khubana, Mukondeleli Isaac 11 1900 (has links)
The study aimed to develop an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by social workers rendering Occupational Social Work (OSW) services, particularly in establishing and maintaining workplace support groups for employees living with HIV and AIDS. The study used a qualitative research approach, aided by exploratory, descriptive and contextual research design. Data was collected from eight participants with semi-structured interviews and was analyzed by applying eight steps for data analysis as proposed by Tesch, cited in Creswell (2003:191). Data verification was done by applying Guba’s model (in Krefting, 1991). The themes, which emerged from the interviews, were: the recruitment of members in workplace support groups and the challenges faced by social workers rendering OSW services. The findings indicate that, critical as their roles may be, social workers experience numerous challenges when providing workplace HIV and AIDS support groups. These include HIV and AIDS disclosure, management, organisational and logistical challenges / Social Work / M.A. (Social Science)

How school management teams view and experience implementation of the integrated quality management system

Nkambule, Samson Gugulethu 07 June 2011 (has links)
This study explored the views and experiences of School Management Teams (SMTs) when implementing Integrated Quality Management System (IQMS) in three primary schools in the Nkangala Region of the Mpumalanga Province, South Africa. A qualitative research approach was adopted and the data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews and document retrieval in schools. The data were then analysed by the constant comparative method. All the participants in this study expressed the view that IQMS is a teacher appraisal system with a potential to develop educators in schools provided both evaluators and evaluatees are honest with the evaluation process and are able to identify their areas of development. However the experience of the principals and deputy principals with the implementation of IQMS in schools reveals that educators inflate their scores and do not identify areas where they need development. The Development Support Groups (DSGs) do not conduct authentic evaluation since they serve the purpose of helping educators to qualify for salary progression. Participants recommended external evaluation as a solution to subjective ratings since external evaluators have a potential to provide objective and credible evaluation because they are unfamiliar with educators and do not experience the pressure to maintain collegiality in schools. A key recommendation is that the Department of Education should conduct effective training for the stakeholders involved with the implementation of IQMS in schools. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Interventions aimed towards children who live in environments where adults misuse substances : A scoping review

Leo, Monique January 2022 (has links)
Children who grow up with one or both parents who substance misuse are at an elevated risk of being harmed. This study aimed to compile current knowledge on directed interventions intended to improve the outcomes of children who live in environments where adults misuse substances, and to analyze children’s influence and participation in interventions. The method used was a systematically undertaken scoping review. Despite a comprehensive searching strategy only ten relevant studies were found. There was a low geographical spread indicating the lack of intervention studies, including within Scandinavian settings. The result showed that nine out of ten interventions were group support. Interventions were manualised and primarily focused on changing children’s behaviour or increasing children’s general knowledge about misuse. Hart’s participation ladder was used to assess children’s degree of participation and influence in both intervention and research setting. Results indicated that children had low to mediocre degrees of participation. An implication for the future is that support groups showed positive effects on children’s attitudes towards misuse by increased knowledge about parental substance misuse. There is still a need for more intervention studies before it is possible to identify the best types of support for children affected by parental substance misuse.
