[en] JACKSON POLLOCK: DAEDALUS S WAY / [pt] JACKSON POLLOCK: O PERCURSO DE DÉDALOKADIANA MENDES DE MEDEIROS RAPOSO 14 March 2011 (has links)
[en] Jackson Pollock’s paintings are usually associated with the all over and drip
paintings’ inventions during the mid-forties in New York. In fact, that’s the
moment where his genius came to the most exciting period of his career. After
years of struggling within, he finally “broke the ice” and started to reevaluate the
plastic modern adventure. This dissertation is about Pollock’s paths, since the
beginnings of the thirties until the black paintings, his last big period. At first,
Pollock’s work seems complex and very contradictory, however, and that’s my
point, if we see through this labyrinth a very coherent line lies underneath the
appearance, in search for life and rhytms to his paintings. In Pollock’s case, it
gains a special flavour for it deals with fundamental aspects of the modern
alphabet. Jackson Pollock makes an assertion of the painting and paradoxically
reveals an impasse that his own radical art generated.

[en] GONZAGA DUQUE: CRITICS ART AND THE EXPERIENCE OF MODERNITY / [pt] GONZAGA DUQUE: CRÍTICA, ARTE E A EXPERIÊNCIA DA MODERNIDADERENATA DE CAMPOS COUTO 03 March 2008 (has links)
modernidade. A
estudo permite pensar as
[en] The present dissertation aims to analyze the performance
of Gonzaga Duque
as an art critic. This work reconstructs the trajectory of
the aesthetic influences
that had composed the theoretical universe of reference
for the performance of
Gonzaga Duque as an art critic. This study emphasizes the
relationship of the
author with the Symbolism, but equally approaches
different sources and critical
experiences involving contemporaries` artists and critics
with relevance for its
period, such as Baudelaire, Zola and Ruskin. This study
indicates that Gonzaga
Duque has a successful acting as critic, performing at the
same time experimental
and a theoretical analysis opened to the challenges of the
present, building a
singular conception of modernity. The dissertation also
aims to analyze the art
reviews themselves with peculiar emphasis to some relevant
artists in the period.
This study it allows the meditation about the amplitude,
but also the limits of the
critic, mainly referring to the comprehension of a certain
plastic modernity, not
incorporated by the author. Finally, the study allows
thinking the specificities of
this historical period composing a social and cultural
scene, with its main
elements, indicating the singular aspects that allowed to
the Gonzaga Duque to
cross the borders of the Brazilian art.

[en] In early 2011, during an outstanding archeological excavation in the port area of Rio de Janeiro city, stones were found that belonged to the wharf where hundreds of thousands of African slaves disembarked to be sold in the old Valongo market, held to be the largest of its kind in Brazil in the 18th and 19th centuries. Buried and erased from the urban texture of Rio for nearly two centuries, in 2012 Valongo has become a milestone in the Historical and Archeological Circuit of the Celebration of African Legacy, with both educational and tourist characteristics, within the context of a sweeping city-planning reform of the docks area: the Marvellous Port Project. This thesis discusses the possibilities of (re)reading today a part of the history of the city and the country, a history associated with the African slave trade and slavery which in many aspects was not told. Starting from a geographic location, an investigation is made into how the history of slavery has been impressed in the social imaginary of the city of Rio de Janeiro and the country over several historical periods. The contemporary discovery of the old wharf and slave market evokes the topos that the experience of slavery in Brazil was, in many aspects, wiped out. Seen in this light, the emerging of these ruins in the 21st century arouses questions as to how and by whom Brazilian history was and is configured.

[en] VOICES AND CARICATURES: ESSAYS ON CONTEMPORARY BRAZILIAN LITERATURE / [pt] VOZES E CARICATURAS: ENSAIOS SOBRE LITERATURA BRASILEIRA CONTEMPORÂNEAMIGUEL BEZZI CONDE 20 February 2018 (has links)
[en] This dissertation is composed of five essays about contemporary Brazilian literature, organized around the idea that the 1990s and 2000s are a moment of crisis in the concepts that traditionally defined the value and place of literature in Brazil. If among us literary value has often been measured according to its degree
of truth or usefulness, the current fractures in the notions of History and Nation help to redefine the preoccupations, priorities, references and practices of Brazilian authors. This does not result in an insular experimentalism, but rather in a political effort, in the sense of search for a place. In such a context, the
emergence of narrative voices that link the narrated events to a determined affective inflection appears as a counterpoint to uncertainties, establishing a new kind of assertiveness that guides and circumscribes the reader s imagination. A discussion of Blanchot s distinction between speaking and seeing, and of the
experience of reading as described by Iser, opens up the way for the analysis of the tension between the point of view and the viewpoint intrinsical to literary texts, and supports the development of the notion of a caricatural literature, which allows the recognition of affinities between apparently incompatible authors, such as João Anzanello Carrascoza, André Sant Anna e Marcelino Freire. Although presented as a group, they are also examined individually, in critical readings that rely on the discussion of such notions as kitsch, political commitment and the value of the ordinary.

[en] Rumor de Arquivo: Rosário Fusco, c est la vie! stages by means of arrangements, voices and mediatory machines, a transit among the fictional work O Agressor by Fusco and the author s life. In this context, the author s archival documents are explored, aiming specially in a collection of unknown (and sparse) letters, traded between the author and Mário de Andrade, from 1927 to 1940, with the intent to explore and transform privations, deviations, deletions, which are invariably imposed on biographical research, as a source of inventions related to reflections over the object of research and its subsequent manifestations. Rosário Fusco s aggressor impels DAVID, the aggressor, to an open scene, exposed, a denouncer of the mediating voices; Standard, already re-harmonize and altered in its irrepressible virus. Facing a form of archive fever, as a trail is craved, a sparkle of truth ignites in contrast with inherent and unconditional restrictions. Following in the footsteps of Biographical Criticism, Rumor of Archive establishes a theater, and employing the expressions of Eneida Maria de Souza and secondly Philippe Lejeune, invention and aestheticization of memory (…) truthfully-lies.

[en] Portinari in por-trait: a self-writing in letter and image investigates the autobiographical writing of the brazilian paiter Candido Portinari through its various registers – his letters, his journal, his poems and his selfportraits. / [en] This study aimed to present the unorthodox religious character, Lauro Bretones, an author forgotten by Brazilian Baptists and by the researches on Protestantism in Brazil. The thesis seeks to present the young Baptist theologian and his disagreement over modernity as well as to notice him as an enthusiast of a romantic Christian tendency which migrates from Europe to Brazil of romantic readers and Christians identified with Romanticism. It leads him to set a different world view causing a distinct numinous production imbued with criticism of the Modern Western Civilization with the following characteristics: anti-capitalism, anti-liberalism, anti-individualism, anti-totalitarianism, anti-technology, and against wars and religious institutions. In his youth, he also proposed an alternative to the modern civilization from the idea of prophetism as a key in favour of the transformation of Brazilian capitalist modernity.

[en] TOMORROW ALL THIS WILL BE INK: FOUR GENERATIONS OF WRITERS IN A BRAZILIAN FAMILY / [pt] AMANHÃ TUDO ISSO SERÁ TINTA: ALIANÇAS DE SANGUE E ESCRITA ENTRE OS GUIMARÃES E GUIMARAENSDOMINGOS DE LEERS GUIMARAENS 15 June 2015 (has links)
[en] This thesis presents critical biographies of four writers who were linked by kinship and their writing. Bernardo Guimarães, Alphonsus de Guimaraens, João Alphonsus e Alphonsus de Guimaraens Filho belong to four generations of a family devoted to literature. Here, their lives and writings come together in a field that is at once imaginary, documentary and real, that maps out their relationships with their peers as well as with the literature of their times. A reading of the works of these authors in their social context reveals the tendency of all four to transform kinship links into artistic alliances, and their shared capacity to exchange distinct aesthetic experiences in such a way as to assuage the solitude of their work in the sharing of their literary experiences: the spirit of adventure of Bernardo Guimarães the boldness of his choice of themes and his aesthetic approach; the sedentary nostalgia for the centres of cultural innovation and a concentration on an elegance of writing on the part of Alphonsus de Guimaraens; an impulse for renovation, a perspicacity in the observation of the social and political scene and a willingness to preserve and disseminate the work of previous generations in the case of João Alphonsus; and, a similar respect for the past coupled with the elaboration of traditional poetic forms in his own writing in the work of Alphonsus Filho.
