Antonio Bento: discurso e prática abolicionista na São Paulo da década de 1880 / Antonio Bento: abolicionist discourse and practice in São Paulo of the decade of 1880Alexandre Ferro Otsuka 04 March 2016 (has links)
By examining the public life and practices of the abolitionist Antonio Bento de Souza e Castro, this dissertation intends to contribute to the debate on the campaign against slavery held in the province of São Paulo over the 1880s. Antonio Bento was frequently identified as the mentor and leader of the radical abolitionist organization Ordem dos Caifazes, which was composed of free men who aided and planned the flights of enslaved men and women in the interior of the province. The first part of the dissertation analyzes the central role played by slavery and its termination in the national political agenda throughout the 1880s, which affected the activities and strategies of the abolitionist movement developed in the province of São Paulo. The second part of the dissertation revisits the life trajectory of Antonio Bento, reviewing the public memory concerning the abolitionist as well as his participation in the struggles against slavery via activities carried out in the judicial arena, engagement in the Fraternity Igreja da Nossa Senhora dos Remédios and, most importantly, involvement with the press. The abolitionist newspaper A Redempção, created and led by Antonio Bento and published in the city of São Paulo between January 1887 and May 1888, was a fundamental source for this dissertation. A study on the structure of such newspaper and on the multiple political projects of abolition that it gathered can be found in the third chapter. Finally, the last chapter focuses on the analysis of Antonio Bentos views as the editor in chief of A Redempção. This chapter demonstrates that Antonio Bento\'s engagement in the fight against slavery relied on the criticism to the contingencies of the abolitionist movement and on a changeable abolitionist discourse aimed at rushing the downfall of the institution of slavery in the Empire of Brazil.

Projeções do \'eu\' e identidades nas narrativas dos abolicionistas Luiz Gama e Frederick Douglas / Projections of self and identities in the narratives of the abolitionists Luiz Gama and Frederick DouglassAdriano Rodrigues dos Santos 25 June 2014 (has links)
(1861), a Carta a Lúcio de Mendonça (1880), ambos de autoria de Luiz Gama, e Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), escrita por Frederick Douglass / In this work, we take as object of investigation the narratives of the abolitionists Luiz Gama (1830-1882), Brazilian, and Frederick Douglass (1818-1895), American. Thus, we intend to evidence the way as the linguistic and semiotic aspects are articulated in the processes of discursive projection of the self and discursive construction of identity, as well as to demonstrate the way each enunciator presents his discursive choices through the thematization and figurativization processes. So, one of our main intentions is to contribute to the expansion of theoretical and analytical visions and perspectives, on the narrative of ex-enslaved. Consequently, the theoretical framework of this work is Discursive Semiotics. This perspective takes into account the study, reflection and analysis of the internal structure of the text. Conceived as the general theory of signification, Semiotics is engaged in the processes of discursive articulation that promote the construction of the meaning effects of the texts. Therewith, the corpus selected for this research comprises the poem Quem sou eu? [Who am I?] (1861), Carta a Lúcio de Mendonça [Letter to Lúcio de Mendonça] (1880), both written by Luiz Gama, and Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845), written by himself

Modes of Transnationalism and Black Revisionist History: Slavery, The Transatlantic Slave Trade and Abolition in 18th and 19th Century German LiteratureJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: This study explores the eighteenth-century and nineteenth-century German dramatic genre Sklavenstücke (slave plays). These plays, which until recently have not received any significant attention in scholarship, articulate a nuanced critique of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade and thus bear witness to an early German-language discourse indicative of abolitionist currents.Tracing individual acts of German-language abolitionism, I investigate the correlation between abolitionist movements in the Euro-American space and German involvements in these very efforts. In this sense, I contest the notion of an absence of German abolitionist awareness in Europe during the Age of Enlightenment. My reading of these slave plays contributes to discussions about the transcultural nature of abolitionist discourse and defies the notion that abolitionist activism only emerged within the specific nation-states that have previously been the subject of scholarship. Challenging this layering both theoretically and analytically, then, requires an innovative shift that centers approaches rooted in Black thought and theories, which are the foundation of this study. These concepts are necessary for engaging with issues of slavery and abolition while at the same time exposing white paternalist perspectives and gazes. Plays of this genre often foreground the horrors of slavery at the hands of cruel white slaveholders, and characterize enslaved Black Africans as unblemished, obedient, submissive, hard-working, and grateful “beings” deserving of humanitarian benevolence. Based on these sentiments, an overarching discourse opposing slavery and the transatlantic slave trade emerged by way of German-language theatrical plays, theoretical treatises, newspaper articles, academic writings, travelogues, diary entries, and journal articles that negotiated the nature, origin, and legitimacy of Black African humanity around debates on slavery. Thus, my study demonstrates that these German-language literary contributions indicate inscribed socio-critical commentary and take up transatlantic abolitionist discourses, a dialogue that surfaced under the auspices of the Enlightenment. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation International Letters and Cultures 2020

Právní úprava prostituce v České republice / Legal Regulation of Prostitution in the Czech RepublicChocholoušová, Karolína January 2022 (has links)
Legal Regulation of Prostitution in the Czech Republic Abstract Prostitution and questions about its legal framework have accompanied humanity since time immemorial. For many centuries periods of prohibition, when prostitution was banned and prosecuted, alternated with periods of regulation, when prostitution was allowed within the legal framework on the territory of the present-day Czech Republic. Since 1992 an abolitionist approach to prostitution has been in place, meaning that prostitution is neither prohibited nor expressly permitted by law. The only regulatory element in the current concept of abolitionism is the power of municipalities to issue generally binding by-laws to ensure local public order. Using by-laws, municipalities are allowed to regulate or even ban prostitution from local public grounds. Since the establishment of the independent Czech Republic, several proposals have emerged with the objective to "solve" abolitionism, demanding a change in the legal approach either towards repression or, more often, towards the creation of legal framework. However, none of them has yet been adopted. This is partly because there is no general agreement on what is the right "solution" and partly because the adoption of prostitution laws is not in accordance with the Czech Republic's obligations under...

From Bondage to Advocacy : Gender, Double Consciousness and Abolitionist Persuasion in Harriet Jacobs’ Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. / Från fångenskap till frihetskamp : Genus, dubbelmedvetenhet och abolitionistisk övertygelse i Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.Engström, Hanna January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to explore how the interplay between gender and double consciousness is used as a rhetorical device in Harriet Jacobs’ autobiographical narrative “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” (1861). Through a feminist theoretical lens and the concept of double consciousness I provide examples from the text illustrating Jacobs’ strategic use of different narrative techniques to convey her abolitionist message.Formulärets överkant The analysis delve into the intricate dual identities that Jacobs’ struggles with as an enslaved woman lacking autonomy, while simultaneously trying to live up to society’s expectation of a “good” woman in the antebellum South. The gendered version of double consciousness works persuasively and highlights her complex situation. By portraying the challenges of an oppressed woman striving to meet societal ideals, Jacobs encourages her readers to support the abolitionist cause.

Tours et détours du genre. Les avatars de l'écriture féminine africaine américaine autour de Harriet Jacobs, Harriet Wilson et Hannah Crafts / Genre and Gender Issues in Early Black Women's Writings. A Comparative Study of Harriet Jacobs, Harriet Wilson and Hannah CraftsZaaraoui, Karima 22 January 2015 (has links)
L’étude comparative de Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (Harriet Jacobs), Our Nig ; Sketches from the Life of a Free Black (Harriet Wilson) et The Bondwoman’s Narrative (Hannah Crafts) s’attache à ouvrir de nouvelles perspectives sur la singularité du sujet féminin noir dans les anfractuosités de l’écriture autobiographique du récit d’esclave. / The comparative study of Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (Harriet Jacobs), Our Nig ; Sketches from the Life of a Free Black (Harriet Wilson), and The Bondwoman’s Narrative (Hannah Crafts) aims at opening up new perspectives on the specificity of the female subject, through the slave narrative’s autobiographical writing. If these women writers stand as privileged witnesses of the female condition in Antebellum America, they do not remain passive nonetheless. The aim of this dissertation is to approach the links between « writing » and « feminine », by taking into account the text itself, be it autobiographical or fictionalized. Significantly enough, self-consciousness, identity and the construction of a self through writing are definitely major components of the African American literary tradition in which outstanding voices are singled out. The slave narrative tends to drift away from autobiography in order to afford its survival and conforms to the conventions that proved successful, thus revealing the truth of the subject. In this perspective, gender is the key issue of this study which brings an exclusive insight on black women’s writing. Discursive difference, writing the female body, and a staged conflicted subject are the core themes of this work. As a follower of Dickens and Byron, Hannah Crafts creates a unique blend of genres, while Harriet Wilson’s modus operandi is to rewrite Emerson’s reflections on society, and Harriet Jacobs offers a subversion of the sentimental novel. By all means, these female slave narratives’ « tour de force » lies in the aesthetics and poetics of the genre located at the crossroads of autobiography, sentimental fiction, the gothic and the picaresque. The subject determines its own sexuation, which enables the female subject to break free from the male subject. This dissertation also offers the opportunity to raise the question of history and literature. The slave narrative falls within the frame of literature as the writer’s political stance is an invitation to reconsider avant-garde women’s literary production within the African American literary canon.

O abolicionismo escolar: reflexões a partir do adoecimento e da deserção dos professores / School abolitionism: reflections from the illness and desertion of school teachers.Camargo, Danilo Alexandre Ferreira de 04 May 2012 (has links)
In this study we intend to produce some reflections on the triumph of school in the contemporary world, as well as ponder upon the political limits of the schooling individual, considering their multiple dimensions: moral, cognitive and socio-cultural. To this end, we have chosen as the overall theme of research the vicissitudes of school routine, especially with regard to illness and desertion of Brazilian public school teachers. The main theoretical reference is the work of Michel Foucault, particularly his analysis of disciplinary institutions, of rational practices of governance of populations and of power/resistance games within the modern forms of sociability. Taking both the Foucauldian conception of governmentality and the analysis of medical and educational discourse on teachers health as our starting point, we have developed three conceptual operators: the intolerability of the school routine, the fatigue limit of teachers as a moral counter-conduct and finally, school abolitionism, considering this last concept both as political stalemate of our times and as an overture to an indeterminate future. Thus, our study aims to demonstrate how the processes of governmentalization of schooling conducts are crossed, at the same time, by a tragic element and by conflicts that, instead of making explicit the mechanisms and moves of power on ways and modes of life, are regarded as the permanent ruin of the very paradigm of the ruling power in this domain. Above all, we have looked at limit-cases of thought and action, as well as at the possibility of envisaging some deadlocks of contemporary formal education in a political light, which lead us to suggest that the problem of illness among teachers should not be reduced to contexts of medical pathologization and social moralizing so that it may be reframed as a tragic potency regarding the triumphant failure of school, a potency that indelibly carries the ghost of school abolitionism as an ethical and political imperative of a time yet to come.

O mal estar e a sociedade punitiva: ensaiando um modelo libertário em criminologia psicanalítica / The punitive society and its discontents: rehearsing a libertarian modelo f psychoanalytic criminologyShimizu, Bruno 31 March 2015 (has links)
This thesis aims to develop a libertarian model in psychoanalytic criminology, seeking a link between the psychoanalytic criminology and the criminological paradigm of social reaction. Thus, the thesis aims to built a psychoanalytic criminology that, instead of questioning about what drives a person to commit the crime, linking crime and psychopathology, puts its theoretical tools in service of the deconstruction and the delegitimization of the punitive system. Moreover, the thesis addresses properly clinical subjects, tracing referrals to the constitution of a \"psychoanalytic clinic of vulnerability\", aimed at providing the empowerment of the individual before the punitive system. Therefore, the thesis makes a review on the works of Sigmund Freud and his immediate disciples, in order to demonstrate that the criminological model that legitimates punishment is inconsistent with Freudian psychoanalysis. Based on this findings and placing the challenges embodied in the advent of the paradigm of social reaction, the thesis traces referrals to the instrumentalization of psychoanalysis toward the critic of institutional punitive practices.
