[en] CRISIS OF SOLIDARITY: A NORMATIVE RECONSTRUCTION IN THE LIGHT OF OTHERNESS AND THE PARADIGM OF THE REFUGEE / [pt] SOLIDARIEDADE EM CRISE: UMA RECONSTRUÇÃO NORMATIVA À LUZ DA ALTERIDADE E DO PARADIGMA DO REFUGIADO

DANIELLA FERNANDES FERRARI 18 October 2019 (has links)
[en] Solidarity, understood as a sense of unity that translates into actions of social cooperation, emerges as one of the imperatives of the twenty-first century, especially as a demand tied to the case of the refugees. The ongoing humanitarian migration crisis, seized in the broader global context of the rise of intolerance and anti-immigration discourse, alluded to a crisis of solidarity. Understanding that the concept of solidarity itself is in crisis, this research intends to explore the contours of human solidarity by using the archetype of the refugee as paradigmatic, justified by the epistemic privilege regarding the necessary contact with otherness that unavoidably presents itself. Solidarity must be reconstructed in normative terms through the concept of otherness rather than sameness; this consideration is essential for the reinvigoration of the concept. To do so, I will present a general overview of solidarity, in connection with the figure of the refugee and the current crisis. Subsequently, I will introduce a few contemporary theses of human solidarity based on Judith Butler s formulations, exploring key concepts such as precariousness, grievability and cohabitation.

The Language of Ethical Encounter: Levinas, Otherness, and Contemporary Poetry

Schwartz, Melissa Rachel 18 July 2017 (has links)
According to philosopher, Emmanuel Levinas, alterity can exist only in its infinite and fluid nature in which the aspects of it that exceed the human ability to fully understand it remain unthematized in language. Levinas sees the encounter between self and other as the moment that instigates ethical responsibility, a moment so vital to avoiding mastering what is external to oneself that it should replace Western philosophy’s traditional emphasis on being as philosophy’s basis, or “First Philosophy.” Levinas’s conceptualization of language as a fluid, non-mastering saying, which one must continually re-enliven against a congealing and mastering said, is at the heart of his ethical project of relating to the other of alterity with ethical responsibility, or proximity. The imaginative poetic language that some contemporary poetry enacts, resonates with Levinas’s ethical motivations and methods for responding to alterity. The following project investigates facets of this question in relation to Levinas: how do the contemporary poets Peter Blue Cloud, Jorie Graham, Joy Harjo, and Robert Hass use poetic language uniquely to engage with alterity in an ethical way, thus allowing it to retain its mystery and infinite nature? I argue that by keeping language alive in a way similar to a Levinasian saying, which avoids mastering otherness by attending to its uniqueness and imaginatively engaging with it, they enact an ethical response to alterity. As a way of unpacking these ideas, this inquiry will investigate the compelling, if unsettled, convergence in the work of Levinas and that of Blue Cloud, Graham, Harjo, and Hass by unfolding a number of Levinasian-informed close readings of major poems by these writers as foregrounding various forms of Levinasian saying. / Ph. D. / This project grounds itself on questions of what makes something that is outside of oneself unique, and of how to use language to let that entity, or being, retain its uniqueness alongside the human quest to understand the world that is always in danger of overtaking the not-I. Philosopher Emmanuel Levinas thought these questions were the critical ones for reframing basic issues of humanity. His work asserts that in order to become conscious selves and to relate to other people without dominating them, it is necessary to open up to the force of the encounter with those who are different from you, and whom you cannot fully conceive, allowing them to remain partially inconceivable. The site for relating in this ethically responsible way exists in language that constantly acknowledges that it cannot capture the object of its descriptions, as opposed to language that attempts to appropriate the other through its usual operations. A unique intersection between these ideas regarding ethics occurs when one considers contemporary poetry, which engages with similar considerations. Therefore, by reading four contemporary poets with vastly different cultural backgrounds: Peter Blue Cloud, Jorie Graham, Joy Harjo, and Robert Hass in a way that considers how they use language to relate ethically to the world beyond their material and intellectual grasp, it is possible to see how Levinas’s ideas might operate in actual language sensitive to these issues.

The two shamans and the owner of the cattle : alterity, storytelling and shamanism amongst the Angaité of the Paraguayan Chaco

Villagra Carron, Rodrigo Juan January 2010 (has links)
My thesis examines from an ethnographic account how history has been made, told and interpreted by the Angaité people of the Chaco since the Paraguayan nation-state effectively carried out the colonization of this territory in the 19th century until the present day. The key elements of this account are the Angaité’s notions and practices on alterity, storytelling and shamanism and how they interplay with one another. I explore the notions of alterity and its counterpart similarity in the context of multiple material transactions in which the Angaité engage both among themselves and with outsiders. I also examine the inseparable socio-moral evaluations attached to such transactions. I show how certain transactions such as exchange or commoditisation do not necessarily conflict with good social relations. Nevertheless, the closest relationships – preferably evoked in kinship terms - are constantly constructed by the combination of several practices including sharing, pooling, cohabitation and companionship and the relational morality that underpins them. This relational morality, I argue, is both inscribed and enacted through the telling of Nanek Any’a narratives –“Old news/events”. I analyze some of these narratives in order to show how the Angaité people interpret the consequences of the colonization of the Chaco. For this I provide an intelligible context for the Nanek Any’a that may otherwise appear contradictory or incomprehensible to a non-Angaité listener. The Angaité’s versions of history compared to the official accounts challenge the simplistic of the Angaité as “acculturated” and a homogenous indigenous people and situate them as main actors of their own lives. Rather than the Angaité being the victims of history the Nanek Any’a emphasize that it was the mistakes and failing of their ancestors in their original encounter with the Paraguayans that resulted in an unbalanced relationship with the latter in socio-economic terms. In addition to this, I describe in the light of the historical processes undergone in the lives of the Angaité, how the shamanic discourses and capacities and Angaité cosmology have changed. I explore how they have constantly incorporated external elements, and thus such shamanic elements pervades contemporary areas of life and interactions that include not only the paradigmatic indigenous shaman, but unusual figures such as pastors, powerful outsiders and leaders.

À la redécouverte de la Palestine : le regard sur l’autre dans les récits de voyage français en Terre sainte au dix-neuvième siècle / Revealing Palestine : the epresentation of the other in french travel narratives about the Holy Land in the nineteenth century

Galazka, Guy 25 January 2010 (has links)
The revival of European interest in the Holy Land in the nineteenth century prompted manytravellers to seek to publish their accounts on their return to France. The analysis of thesetexts shows that these modern-day pilgrims found it necessary not to confine themselves todescribing the Holy Places, but also to reveal the geographical and ethnic environment ofPalestine, to express their feelings, to recount anecdotes. The reader is thus confronted with anarrator who is fully aware of his own identity, regardless of the journey undertaken. In viewof their subjective nature, one cannot fail to notice that nineteenth-century French travelnarratives about Palestine, rather than being part of a well-defined discourse, « speak » withmany different, often contradictory voices, which outline the major differences between theWest and the East, without presenting a homogenous image of one or the other.

Lauzon, Marilyn 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis uses the concepts of stereotype (as theorized by Ruth Amossy, Jean-Louis Dufay and Mireille Rosello) and self-exoticism (defined by Nathalie Schon) to study the representations of the sexuality of the black man in Alléluia pour une femme-jardin from author René Depestre and La chair du maître from Dany Laferrière. Stereotype and exoticism are both dependent on a vision of the other that is generalizing, superficial and ephemeral. Here, they are used in a self-referential way by the authors of Haitian origin, which depict black protagonists often corresponding to the stereotype of black hyper-sexual male, which is derived from yet demeaning colonial fantasies. In this research, we analyze the different postures of male sexuality in the work of Depestre and Laferrière in order to reveal a varied use of stereotypes, sometimes renewed, sometimes displaced or rendered obsolete or uncertain, with various textual strategies such as humor, irony, exaggeration or omission. In doing so, we note that the complex use of stereotypes in Depestre and Laferrière texts, whatever it procedes by the use of the same tropes, denotes different ways for the characters to deal with their own "strangeness".

The conga of Los Hoyos : To perform the boundaries of Self and Otherness

Frappa, Manon 05 October 2012 (has links)
This research aims to highlight how, through a chain of performances, individuals perform a cultural communication which allows to dynamically draw the boundaries between community groups. Community reveals itself not be a pre-existing reality imposing liability on individuals, but a performative construction whose identification is achieved by the participation to the conga. I will mobilize a generative and processual approach, and the notion of performance will be considered, not as an hermetic phenomenological class, but as a notion which may include several modes of participation (shows, games, drama, dramatization, daily interactions) associated with different registers of attention mobilised by the individual in the action.Within the global space of the city of Santiago de Cuba, Los Hoyos is a "neighborhood" often cited by individuals as their place of residence. The frequency of contacts, the importance of reciprocal services, inter-dependence related to the risk of denunciation, but also the emotional intensity and intimacy of trade and interactions create a very tight social space, inhabited by a strong sense of community. The first part of this work, "Faire Monde" goes to the quest of this claimed community. In Chapter 1 I considered the group Los Hoyos distinct in the sense that it is a specific category assigned and identified by its actors. However, this ascriptive category does not match any official administrative area linked to socialist planning. In addition, the division of space not only doesn’t match from one individual to another, but also presents variations of considerable magnitude. Los Hoyos is represented ( operations de bornage ) and figurated (sketch maps) as a space that goes from 5 blocks over 4, to 15 blocks over 13, and associating 1 to 7 areas of socialist planning. Neither collaborative networks nor kinship ties, nor individual representations of space allow reconstructing the attachment claimed as a territorial identity. The analysis reveals inside of Los Hoyos a plurality of settings that are in conflict of definitions and simultaneously informants agreed to recognize symbolic totalities between them. It is not then to endorse the spontaneous essentialism of my informants who represent themselves into a community presented as an unchanging entity, traditional etc., but to succeed in making these categories operational for analysis. I did not consider the symbolism in terms of its content, but for the distinctive shape of the style on which it is built. Style must then be understood as the specific relationship setting on which the conga build a symbolic production which content is interpreted as particular to the community of Los Hoyos. This reveals two crucial relationships:-These totalities are constructed by linking in the form of cross-references the domains” neighbourhood” and “conga”. The Conga of los Hoyos, a group of musical percussion whose house is the epicentre of the representations of the neighbourhood, is a significant paradigm in organizing a symbolic repertory meaningful for the group. Symbolic features become self-referential vehicles to designate a system of relationships built during the performances. Sense of belonging to the community of Los Hoyos is then constructed by the form of the counterpoint which combines the sense of unity and the individual variability. - The realization of several maps (sketch maps and maps of the spatiotemporal development of performances), once juxtaposed, reveals a direct correlation between the polarizations of the representations of the community’s space and the conga’s journeys. If the analyze of networks of sociability, economic activity and representations of space highlighted a valuation of "side by side", it is the conga, then both emblem and vector of the community which seems to allow, by the performance, to be "linked to".Chapter 2 goes in search of the sense of group identity through specific relationships to...

The image of China and the question of alterity in a French literary corpus of the twentieth century : intercultural challenges and methodological propositions in literary didactics for French foreign language learning in China

Zheng, Wen 30 October 2017 (has links)
From a signification of “civilization” to a consciousness of “culturality” with movement, the evolution of notions of culture and the intercultural leads us today to a more dynamic reflection concerning the culture bearer's identity and his relationship with others. This dynamism is notably apparent in the teaching of French as a foreign language, particularly when it is taught through the study of French literature. The literary text, once considered as simply material for translation, appears to us today to be an intercultural repertoire filled with identity and cultural contacts between the francophone author and the foreign reader. This thesis attempts to clarify, using an interdisciplinary approach, understanding of culture and the intercultural in French language and French literary teaching, choosing the Chinese university milieu as our object of study. Supported by observations in class and interviews with Chinese teachers, we have reflected on intercultural issues in French literary teaching in the Chinese university context. This research on the ground allows us to propose pedagogical activities for Chinese students, making use of a French literary corpus of the twentieth century, that encourage reflection about the link between stereotype and identity, image diversity, as well as alterity in relationships with others.

L'Orient d'Arthur de Gobineau / The Arthur de Gobineau’s East

Bel Hadj Yahia, Emna 14 June 2016 (has links)
Arthur Gobineau is an author who sparked controversy over his racial theories. These theories, however, have contributed to blur the image of the author, often described as the father of racist tendencies. This thesis is not concerned with the essayist, but with the writer, as a knowledgeable of the East, humanist, curious of the other, and especially unknown.Beyond these racial theories, Gobineau is the author of a literary work which, under the appearance of a hieratic classicism, sometimes gives us a vision of a highly complex man. It is one of the last representatives of the analysis literature, which is peculiar to French. But he is also positioned on the margins of the orientalist vision of his time. His journey to the East was operated first on an approach that was based upon subjective sensation and emotion before that the passion would eventually outweigh prejudices. The New Asians operates a transfiguration of the personal myth into a literary myth: the personal quest for origins is reflected in the return to the cradle of humanity. Literary fiction made its matrices wherein it all began.Transposing to the East reminiscences of his native culture, the author puts to the test of this elsewhere western patterns and figures. Is it the thought that grows with the fiction or the same obsessions that come back into the folds of the story as contraband? It is this question that we tried to answer by probing the eastern mystery of an unknown author.

The corpus is constituted by two dissertations and a thesis. The dissertations, which are from PUC (SP), were elaborated in two Post-Graduations Programs: Education (Curriculum) and Applied Linguistic and Language Study (LAEL); and the thesis, from the Language Study Institute IEL (UNICAMP). The methodology has two dimensions: a quantitative dimension data organization, identification of authors, dicendi verbs and cited discourse forms; and a dimension of interpretation of the researcher interaction with his other in research texts. In these dimensions, intenta to interpret the roles attributed to the other by the researcher, the position that s he assumes in the interaction with the other and the researcher resulting from this interaction. The texts, all from the 1990s, were separated by a three-year interval (1993, 1996, and 1999) and deal from different perspectives with, a very common theme that has been relevant during these years, the interaction teacher-student in the classroom. They are a representative sample for explaining the most relevant aspects of the researcher interaction with the other in the construction of the scientific text and about the main ways in which the researcher constructs herself in the interaction with the other / Este trabalho apresenta um estudo sobre as formas de alteridade em Dissertações e Tese à luz dos estudos enunciativo-discursivos de Bakhtin e seu Círculo, e, de modo especial, do conceito de alteridade, procurando identificar as interações e as posições que o pesquisador estabelece com os teóricos.
