Effects of a virtual platform in reading comprehension and vocabulary: An alternative to improve reading abilities in Elementary school / Efecto de una plataforma virtual en comprensión de lectura y vocabulario: Una alternativa para mejorar las capacidades lectoras en primariaThorne, Cecilia, Morla, Kim, Ucelli, Paola, Nakano, Teresa, Mauchi, Beatriz, Landeo, Lorena, Vásquez, Angie, Huerta, Román 25 September 2017 (has links)
Given, on the one hand, the poor results obtained by Peruvian children in the national and international reading assessments. And on the other hand, the increased investment intechnology for schools in the country, this study aimed to develop and test an online tool to improve reading comprehension. In order to do this, the reading comprehension strategies and vocabulary activities from the research-based digital environment ICON were adapted to design the platform LEO. A total of 88 fifth graders from urban middle-to-low-income private schools from Lima participated in this quasi-experimental study, which involved acontrol group and a treatment group that participated in a 12-week teacher-mediated digital intervention. All participants were administered reading and vocabulary assessments pre and post intervention. Results revealed that students who participated in the intervention achieved higher comprehension scores for narrative texts and higher vocabulary scores than those of the control group.

The purpose of this thesis is to study how four different Swedish teachers in elementary school are teaching pupils reading comprehension to develop the low-performing pupils. To investigate and find out this I intend to try to answer the following questions: What strategies / methods / support structures do the teachers consider to help the lowperforming pupils understand the content of texts? How does the teacher reflect on the support the pupils receive? What types of questions do the teachers use in the text talks to support the pupils in developing their reading skills? The research questions are answered by qualitative methods in forms of interviews and observations. The theoretical point of view of the study is Lev Vygotsky's socio-cultural perspective, where Vygotsky describes how children develop when interacting with other people. Because teachers are the ones helping pupils develop, I will investigate how the interviewed teachers are working with those pupils and whether they believe this theory helps and guides the low-performing pupils forward in the learning process. The results of the study show that all the interviewed teachers agree on that pupils develop their reading skills when interacting with more competent classmates because it increases their ability to absorb information.

Previous issue date: 2013 / This research general objective was to investigate tactics and strategies of idiomatic comprehension used by 20 Lusophone African university students, from Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau, non-native speakers of Brazilian Portuguese (BP). For the construction of the research hypotheses, psycholinguistic theories of phraseological processing, such as the ones promoted by Bobrow and Bell (1973), Irujo (1986), Cacciari & Tabossi (1993), Flores d'Arcais (1993), Cooper (1999), Crespo and Caceres (2006) and Detry ( 2010) and, in the phraseological field, Casares (1950) 1969), Gross(1996); Corpas-Pastor (1996), Iñesta Mena and Pamies Pertrán (2002), Mellado Blanco (2004), Montoro Del Arco (2006); García-Page Sánchez (2008); Olza Moreno (2011); Alvarado Ortega (2010) and Luque Nadal (2012). A verbal protocol think aloud through which were carried out three experiments that have contemplated 18 idiomatic expressions of frequent use in Brazil, divided into three phraseological categories was designed from models of experiments developed by psycholinguists was elaborated and applied to the subjects of the research: (1) zoomorphisms; (2) somatics: and (3) Special (botanics, clothins, gastronomic) results of the research have confirmed the hypotheses that expressions designate names of animals (zoomorphisms) and parts of the body (somatics) favored the weak idiomatic expression (transparency) by its semantical analysis or semantical compositionality, except for the mum’s the word (fazer boca de siri) which word siri is not found in the vocabulary of Creole languages (Cape Verdean and Guinean). Between the special expressions, fazer boca de siri was considered opaque since the informants have ignored the meaning given by Brazilians to the expression. It has confirmed a hypothesis that the strategies related to the use of context are the most commonly used by non-natives of PB, to reach at the meaning of the expressions. Among the special expressions, rasgar seda was considered opaque since the informants have ignored the meaning given by Brazilians to the expression. It has confirmed a hypothesis that the strategies related to the use of context are the most commonly used by non-natives of PB, to reach at the meaning of the expressions. The results also indicate that the phraseological processing does not follow a single upward direction (bottom-up) or downward (top-down), but that exist a constant inter-relationship between tactics and strategies in comprehension of idiomatic expressions / Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo geral investigar táticas e estratégias de compreensão de expressões idiomáticas utilizadas por 20 estudantes universitários africanos lusófonos, oriundos de Cabo Verde e Guiné-Bissau, falantes não nativos do Português Brasileiro (PB).

A qualitative study of teachers' descriptions of and thoughts about teaching reading comprehension and reading comprehension strategiesDahl, Elin January 2018 (has links)
The aim of the study is to increase the knowledge of how teachers in grades 1–3 describe that they organize teaching to develop students' reading comprehension and how they motivate their choices. Based on the aim, three research questions were formulated: How do teachers teach reading comprehension and reading comprehension strategies? Why do teachers teach read comprehension and reading strategies that as they do? What do teachers think is important in teaching to help students develop reading comprehension and reading comprehension strategies? The study is qualitative and the data collection method is semistructured interviews. The informants in the study comprise five competent teachers in the subject Swedish for grades 1–3. The collected material was transcribed and analyzed based on a didactic approach and a socio-cultural perspective. The result shows that teachers teach reading comprehension and reading comprehension strategies in varying ways. They use reading aloud, reading lessons, book discussions, ”Läsfixarna”, questions and conversations, as well as working methods that allow students to help and learn from each other. The most important elements emphasized by the teachers as contributing to the development of reading comprehension is scaffolding and guidance, starting from scratch, varying working methods, conversation and motivation.

Being able to read is not the same as understandingLundin, Evelina January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze four teaching materials in the Swedish subject for students in grade 4 to see the variety of different types of texts and strategies for reading comprehension that are found in the teaching materials. • What reading comprehension strategies are represented in the study's chosen teaching materials? • What are the similarities and differences between the chosen teaching tools regarding reading comprehension strategies? • What types of texts are present and how much is the variation in the chosen study material of the study? The result showed that two of the teaching materials contained all the reading comprehension strategies that the study examined. Furthermore, the result showed that one of the teaching materials had a large variety of different types of texts, while another teaching material had little variation. The analysis showed that a teaching material with few reading comprehension strategies also had a small variety of texts. The analysis then showed that the teaching materials that contained many reading comprehension strategies also had a greater variety of different types of texts.

Vägen till en god läsförståelse. : Lärares syn på läsförståelse och läsförståelsestrategier i sin undervisning. / The road to a good reading comprehension. : Teachers' views on reading comprehension and reading comprehension strategies in their teaching.Aronsson Eriksson, Matilda, Antonsson Gustafsson, Veronica January 2021 (has links)

Att utveckla läsförståelse : En kvalitativ studie om lärares uppfattningar om läsförståelse och läsförståelseundervisning i årskurserna F-3 / To develop reading comprehension : A qualitative study about teachers’ perceptionsabout reading comprehension and reading comprehension teaching in grades F-3.Wixtröm, Fanny January 2021 (has links)
Reading comprehension is a complex skill depending on several interacting abilities. Teachers' perceptions of how reading comprehension teaching can be designed in practice relative to students' different developmental stages are a decisive factor for students' reading comprehension development (Jönsson, 2007). Previous research emphasizes which abilities are required for fully developed reading comprehension, and to some extent how these separate abilities can be taught in practice. However, there is a lack of research on teachers' perceptions regarding reading comprehension teaching in the classroom context. There is also a lack of research on teachers' perceptions of reading comprehension from a holistic perspective and how teachers create equitable reading comprehension teaching relative to students' different stages of development. The purpose of the present study is therefore to describe primary school teachers' perceptions of reading comprehension and the teaching practice that is conducted to develop students' reading comprehension. The purpose of the study is achieved through the questions: · How does primary school teachers perceive the concept of reading comprehension in grades F-3? · What working methods do the primary school teachers describe and motivate that they use to develop students' reading comprehension in grades F-3? · What aspects do primary school teachers describe as particularly important in conjunction with working methods for reading comprehension in grades F-3? The data collection was carried out through three semi-structured focus group interviews with six primary school teachers. This qualitative study is focusing on teachers' perceptions. The theoretical framework of the study is based on a sociocultural perspective. The results show that reading comprehension is perceived as interacting abilities that include decoding and inference creation. The results show the teachers’ perceptions of working methods for developing reading comprehension, which are motivated and described by the variation of reading aloud, text talks, a reading class, reading in pairs, and text cards. The teachers describe that the working methods enable development based on varied levels of knowledge and stages of development. In connection with the working methods, the teacher has a decisive role, where text choice relative to the student group in connection with the working methods is a significant factor.

Litteratursamtalets möjligheter : En intervjustudie om litteratursamtalets betydelse för läsförståelsens utveckling i årskurs 4-6 / The possibilities of the literature conversation : An interview study about the significance of the literature conversation for the development of reading comprehension in grades 4-6Sjöberg, Amandha January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine teachers' thoughts about literature conversations. The study amied to find out what theachers think a succsessful literature conversation look like, what opportunities and challenges the method has and what significance the literature conversation has for students' development of reading comprehension. To collect data for the study, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten certified and active teachers who teaches in grades 4-6. The study is based on Lev Vygotsky's theories of learning, which means that people learn in interaction with others. The results of the study show that teachers believe that the literature converastion is the method that benefits students the most when it comes to developing reading comprehension. The teachers believe that in a successful literature conversation the students learn from each other. This should be done in small groups as the students get a greater opportunity to exspress their thoughts and opinions about the text. The literature conversation is important for students' development of reading comprehension. In conversations, the studnets can help each other to get further in their cognitive thinking. This can be linked to the zone of proximal development, which is a concept in the sociolultural theory of learning and means that children learn in interaction whit others.

Hur utvecklar elever i avkodningssvårigheter läsförståelse? : En kvalitativ studie kring fem lärares undervisning i läsförståelse för elever i avkodningssvårigheter / How do students with decoding difficulties develop reading comprehension? : Aqualitative study of five teachers’ teaching of reading comprehension to students withdecoding difficultiesLundberg, Fanny January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to investigate the perceptions of five teachers regarding their teaching of reading comprehension to students with decoding difficulties. The theoretical starting point of the study is based on the sociocultural theory, where the focus is that the students' acquisition of knowledge takes place within the framework of the zone of proximal development. A qualitative method has been used in the study. Through qualitative semi-structured interviews, material collection was carried out. The material was analysed using a phenomenographic approach. The results show that the main themes in teachers' working methods for developing reading comprehension for students in decoding difficulties are visual support, modelling reading comprehension strategies and to use text-talk to reflect and understand the meaning of a text.
