The Seal and the Hunter : The Bothnian Seal-Hunters' Conceptual System for Seal from a Cognitive Perspective

Edlund, Ann-Catrine January 2000 (has links)
In the North Scandinavian area of investigation, which is in focus in this dissertation, seal-hunting has been an important means of livelihood from prehistoric times up to the present. The Swedish-speaking seal-hunters' conceptual system for seal during the 20th century is analysed here. The analysis is mainly based on oral recorded interviews with hunters from the coastal areas around the Gulf of Bothnia – from Norrbotten and Västerbotten in Sweden, and Österbotten in Finland. A cognitive perspective is applied in the analysis, in which focus is on the hunters' knowledge of the seal with the purpose of investigating the construction of the hunters' conceptual system for seal. The dissertation's theoretical starting-point is taken in cognitive linguistics and cognitive anthropology. The investigated vocabulary contains 150 different words for seal. The analysis also includes the cultural and ecological context of the hunt. The hunters' conceptual system for seal is characterised by breadth and variation. There is regional variation in the construction of the conceptual system in the investigated area. In addition to that there is also variation with regard to different hunting seasons, something which is apparent both in the vocabulary and in the structure of the conceptual system. The summer and autumn hunt was not particularly complicated and there was consequently no need for categorising the seal. During this season a limited conceptual system with more general terms was used, which included all seals that were hunted at that time. The late winter and early summer hunt, on the other hand, required an immense amount of knowledge, for example with regard to ecology. In that connection the hunters used an extended conceptual system for seal. The analysis of the conceptual system of the late winter and early summer hunt is based on three different scenarios in which the categories for seal direct the actions of the hunters – in locating the seals in the ice environment, in the hunters' actions during the hunt and in the utilisation of the seal as a resource. A number of categories for seal which were used during the late winter and early spring hunt are the same in the whole area of investigation and can be said to constitute a cognitive and communicative basic level. / digitalisering@umu

A relev?ncia deste trabalho ? proporcionar uma contribui??o para a descri??o sem?ntica do portugu?s / We present, in this work, based on cognitive semantics, an analysis of the meaning in context of the modal auxiliaries can, need and must. We analysed 120 texts produced by applicants for university entrance examinations and primary school students as answer to question number three of the Portuguese Language discursive test, in the entrance examinations for UFRN, that asked the candidates to explicit the difference in meaning between three sentences, observing the use of those three verbs. We consider that a lexical item is not incorporated by a steady semantic structure, limited and unique, but instead, it is linked to an open and flexible linguistic semantic representation that provides access to many conceptions and conceptual systems depending on each determined context. Based on its meaning, a lexical item evokes a group of cognitive domains, which present a determined conceptual content. This makes possible to affirm that the net of lexical meanings will vary according to the world knowledge each one has (LANGACKER, 2000). The relevance of this work is provide a understanding of the semantic decription of portuguese

Towards Improving Human-Robot Interaction For Social Robots

Khan, Saad 01 January 2015 (has links)
Autonomous robots interacting with humans in a social setting must consider the social-cultural environment when pursuing their objectives. Thus the social robot must perceive and understand the social cultural environment in order to be able to explain and predict the actions of its human interaction partners. This dissertation contributes to the emerging field of human-robot interaction for social robots in the following ways: 1. We used the social calculus technique based on culture sanctioned social metrics (CSSMs) to quantify, analyze and predict the behavior of the robot, human soldiers and the public perception in the Market Patrol peacekeeping scenario. 2. We validated the results of the Market Patrol scenario by comparing the predicted values with the judgment of a large group of human observers cognizant of the modeled culture. 3. We modeled the movement of a socially aware mobile robot in a dense crowds, using the concept of a micro-conflict to represent the challenge of giving or not giving way to pedestrians. 4. We developed an approach for the robot behavior in micro-conflicts based on the psychological observation that human opponents will use a consistent strategy. For this, the mobile robot classifies the opponent strategy reflected by the personality and social status of the person and chooses an appropriate counter-strategy that takes into account the urgency of the robots' mission. 5. We developed an alternative approach for the resolution of micro-conflicts based on the imitation of the behavior of the human agent. This approach aims to make the behavior of an autonomous robot closely resemble that of a remotely operated one.

Liu, Michel 09 December 2016 (has links)
Around 2008, a literary genre called "zhichang xiaoshuo" arouses enthusiasm in China: bestsellers with their adaptations generate several hundred works in the same vein. This phenomenon that we call "white-collar literature" is literary, socio-economic and cultural at once. New in the history of literature, this literature is atypical due to the professional identity of its authors, its hybrid forms, and also its production methods. Four works, including most publicized and most original, constitute our core corpus, and offer a sample of the richness of the phenomenon. Our work takes a two-pronged approach, both socio-historical and literary. For works of the corpus, we first study the plot, the characters, the textual structure and narrative techniques. We examine in parallel two fictions by renowned writers who portrayed the working world of the early and late 1980s, respectively, and two fictions in the “guanchang” and the “shangchang” genres at the turn of the century or contemporary with “zhichang xiaoshuo”. The economic, political and cultural context in which the phenomenon appeared is widely studied. We also analyze the adaptations as variants of the literary work, and try to explain their differences. Finally, we explore the functions of this popular literature in twenty-first century Chinese society which is, on the one hand, proud of its prosperity and enjoying the benefits of new technologies; and on the other hand, marked by the trauma of its past and by a general loss of bearings.

Modeling of complex network, application to road and cultural networks

Jiang, Jian 12 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Many complex systems arising from nature and human society can be described as complex networks. In this dissertation, on the basis of complex network theory, we pay attention to the topological structure of complex network and the dynamics on it. We established models to investigate the influences of the structure on the dynamics of networks and to shed light on some peculiar properties of complex systems. This dissertation includes four parts. In the first part, the empirical properties (degree distribution, clustering coefficient, diameter, and characteristic path length) of urban road network of Le Mans city in France are studied. The degree distribution shows a double power-law which we studied in detail. In the second part, we propose two models to investigate the possible mechanisms leading to the deviation from simple power law. In the first model, probabilistic addition of nodes and links, and rewiring of links are considered; in the second one, only random and preferential link growth is included. The simulation results of the modelling are compared with the real data. In the third part, the probabilistic uncertainty behavior of double power law distribution is investigated. The network optimization and optimal design of scale free network to random failures are discussed from the viewpoint of entropy maximization. We defined equilibrium network ensemble as stationary ensembles of graphs by using some thermodynamics like notions such as "energy", "temperature", "free energy" for network. In the forth part, an union-division model is established to investigate the time evolution of certain networks like cultural or economical networks. In this model, the nodes represent, for example, the cultures. Several quantities such as richness, age, identity, ingredient etc. are used to parameterize the probabilistic evolution of the network. The model offers a long term view on the apparently periodic dynamics of an ensemble of cultural or economic entities in interaction.

Cintra, Elizabeth Dias de Souza 05 August 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Reflecting on the didactic and methodological practices of literary reading experienced in classroom at elementary school is becoming ever more profitable and urgent. Thinking about it, this work proposes the analysis of literary representations in juvenile infants literary texts of children and adolescents rights as an atempt to develop activities of literary taste. This cut is relevant, because it enables the discussion of different social realities to the reader in training. To that purpose, it is intended that children and adolescents expand their horizon of expectations regarding their rights, yet challenging situations of abuse, exploitation of child labor, sexual abuse and other violations, and realize social tensions represented in literary texts. This concern is relevant because the school should be seen as a protection space for discussion and what is disrespect for the child and its consequences. For this, it is suggested in the methodological field a practice of reading the Gomes (2012) guided cultural model and the Bordini and Aguiar (1988) recepcional method. The search for a trampled teaching of literature in literary literacy is also a concern in this endeavor, and literary reading workshops were produced, on the pretense of developing more meaningful teaching strategies and attractive to our readers in training. To achieve these workshops, we have worked with literary texts: "Ciranda, cirandinha" by Arriete Vilela (2003) and "Por um pé de feijão," by Antonio Torres (2002). After the making and applicability of diverse activities, it culminated with the making of an educational notebook directed to the teacher, in order to spread our work proposal. As theoretical apparatus were used conceptions of literature teaching, reading and literary reading anchored in the postulates of Cosson (2011), Candido (2011), Dória (2008), Viegas (2012), Werneck (2010), Eco (2004), Leffa (1996), Magnani (2001), Silva (2009), Lajolo and Zilberman (2007) among others; in addition the study on violence against children and adolescents supported in Vicente Faleiros and Eva Faleiros (2007), Philippe Ariès (2014), Moura (2013), Passetti (2013) and as the concepts and guidelines regarding juvenile infants public rights established by the Statute of Children and Adolescents (1990).

Tiirinki, H. (Hanna) 13 May 2014 (has links)
Abstract The purpose of this study was to analyze cultural meanings associated with primary health center´s from customers’ point of view. Since 1972 the health center has been the most important place providing public health care. Nationally, customership development has been the main goal of primary health care. The purpose of this study was to determine the cultural meanings associated with the health center from customers’ point of view. The theoretical framework utilized in the study comprised the idea of new public service, the theory of organizational culture and a cultural model that allows understanding the health center, the cultural meanings conceptualized, and the interface between the customer and health care center. A three -phase empirical study was conducted using mixed methods. In the first phase, the cultural significance of the customer point of view was examined in document data (N=605), consisting of health care center -related writings in the Kaleva newspaper during the period 1972–1982. The second phase consisted of virtual anthropological data (N=338), i.e internet chat room writings from around 2010. The third phase was a questionnaire form, which formed part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 study. It included a multiple choice questionnaire (N=3237) and open questions (N=200). Qualitative data (the empirical part of phases I, II, and partly III) were analyzed by inductive and deductive content analysis and text analysis. The quantitative data (the partly empirical phase III) were statistically analyzed. In the study, four cultural models were formed pertaining to the visible and hidden cultural meanings related to health centers from customers’ point of view: 1. The Melting Pot of Health Problems Model, highlighting the meanings between the organization and the customer, such as staff incarnation and individual activity associated with meanings, which on the other hand appeared contradictory. 2. The Low-Threshold Model, where the meanings are associated with service. The health center was considered a “rush center”, where the level of care varies, but the service was felt to harmonize with the trust-related meanings and was compared to the bedrock. 3. The Guessing Centre Model, which consisted of the beliefs and meanings associated with a health center waiting room or was described as a lottery, but which was on the other hand regarded as the center of rumors. 4. The Expected Future Model, where the meanings related to expectations concerning the future of the health care center, describing a generative and functional local health care centre with a set of values based on holisticity. The theoretical results provide new insight that helps understand phenomena on the interface between health care services and customers. Health center customers appear to be a cultural phenomenon, organized as cultural models. In health care, the new information generated in the study can be used in customers-oriented planning and development, education, health and applied cultural research. / Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli analysoida terveyskeskukseen liittyviä kulttuurisia merkityksiä perusterveydenhuoltopalveluiden asiakkaan näkökulmasta. Terveyskeskus on ollut vuodesta 1972 tärkein julkinen terveydenhoitopaikka. Valtakunnallisesti perusterveydenhuollon päätavoitteeksi on nostettu asiakkuuden kehittäminen. Määrällinen aineisto (osin empiirisen aineiston osa III) analysoitiin tilastollisesti. Terveyskeskuksessa asiakas on edelleen palvelujen tuottamisen kohde.

Contribution to the modeling of emic artificial cultural awareness through ontologies.

Petit, Jean 27 June 2017 (has links)
With the growing web, a number of applications seek to meet the needs of users or machines having diverse cultural backgrounds. From this context of cultural diversity arises conflicts linked to different world conceptions. Offering adaptated services requires the integration of a form of cultural awareness in the system. An artificial cultural awareness is composed of formal cultural representations and mediations providing the system with the means to interpret the represented cultures and to determine their differences. So far the representations used for the development of culturally-aware systems come from universal or ``etic'' models. Those coarse-grained models, even though they are adapted, limit the possible understanding of the represented cultures. As a consequence they constitute a bottleneck for the development of culturally-aware systems. This thesis investigates the development of a finer-grained artificial cultural awareness based on cultural models specific to each culture called ``emic''. I study the construction, the formalisation and the mediation of these emic cultural representations. My main contributions are the design and validation of, in one hand, a new semi-automatic ethnographic process for building emic models through text-mining, in another hand, an emic artificial cultural awareness based on the mapping of cultural ontologies coming from those models.

L'influence et représentations de la France au Venezuela : les enjeux autour des relations politiques et culturelles de 1870 à nos jours / France Influence and representation in Venezuela from 1870’s up to present times : the key issues around the political and cultural relations

Uzcategui Moncada, Maria 23 September 2015 (has links)
Unlike other regions of the Third World, where the influence of France was decisive and uninterrupted (Middle East, Maghreb, former French colonies in Central Africa and other countries of Latin America), in Venezuela, there was only a real foreign cultural cooperation policy by the late 1950s. The advent of the oil boom during the interwar period caused the declining of French influence. By the end of the Second World War, French diplomats were aware of Venezuela’s energetic potential, remarking that it was possible to overcome the loss of economic influence by encouraging a genuine cultural cooperation. This cultural cooperation would use political networks joined by Francophile elites, who claimed a common history between France and Venezuela. The study on the long run allows observing the permanence of the Venezuelan political history, in which fits the elements used in the construction of the Venezuelan National sentiment and the influence of French ideas on the project of State modernization. Our study raises issues such as migration, trades and commercial relations. We are particularly interested in the study of diplomatic relationships, since a close up over these can highlight, watermark, many points related to their representations and the political history of both countries. Similarly, it allows approaching what the elite considered identity and cultural affinity. Our sources therefore relate mostly to diplomatic correspondence preserved in the files of La Courneuve and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Caracas. We cross checked with other documentaries, visual and literary sources as well as a certain number of interviews conducted by the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011. Our study is based on the papers related to the history of international relations by Pierre Renouvin and Jean Baptiste Duroselle, revisited by Robert Frank in 2011. We take into consideration the contribution of images, official culture and the influence of cultural patterns, as an attempt to measure the "power" of States (soft power). On this matter, the value that the Venezuelan elites gave to the French cultural and scientific influence, in the XIX century and the beginning of XX (1870-1935), helps to explain to an extend the reason why France has managed to strengthen its presence in Venezuela. Indeed, the decline of the French cultural influence, at a time when relations between the two countries were considerably distended (1936-1960), is concomitant with the loss of its economic and commercial influence. This has resulted in the progressive institutionalization of the culturaldiplomacy strategy (from 1961 up to the present). Thanks to this strategy France has recovered part of the market share lost to the Anglo-Saxon competition. We wanted to answer two fundamental questions: To what extent the Venezuelan elites, "influenced" by the French cultural model, managed to operate appropriations / assimilation / adaptation of this model in Venezuela?
