Previous issue date: 2006 / This work identifies, describes and analyzes talks of women under situation of violence who denounce their aggressors to the police, at the Women’s Police Stations. Adopting conceptions about the power and the violence formulated by Hannah Arendt and Michel Foucault I try to talk about the gender relations marked by the violence and escaping to the polarizations between dominator-man x dominated-woman. I defend that the women not only react to the violence by many different forms, but produce, through their resistance - passive and active - places of anti-domination, that sometimes can assume what I call "situational power". These resistance behaviors are revealed through quotidian tactics at the private life space and through strategies of publicizing at the public space, when they go to the Women’s Police Stations. The concepts of tactical actions and strategies are taken, respectively from Michel De Certeau and Pierre Bourdieu. The work used as research field the Sergipe State Police Stations for Woman Protection (DEPM). I try to describe and analyze routines, ritualized institutional practices, organizational culture traces, that circule on the field of intersection among the Civil Police, The Women’s Police Stations and the expectations of the women who look for these offices. I try to identify their demands starting from two specialties: the cases where women look for the legal criminalization of their aggressor and the cases when they go to theses stations looking for conciliation, mediation of the conflicts, guarantee of rights and protection. The methodology combines qualitative and quantitative techniques, and have as sources of information: 836 Occurrence Bulletins registered in the 1990s, twenty-one interviews with women denouncers, twelve interviews with police agents and commission agents and with six social movements’ representatives. I also use as sources two experiences of researchintervention, carried out by not policies institutions together with the Sergipe State Police Stations for Woman Protection, dedicated to police education, with whom I experienced two situations of participant observations: the first one developed by the Human Rights Commission of the Sergipe Federal University and second by the MUSA (Woman and Health - Group of Studies on Gender Research of the Bahia Federal University). The analysis is delimited by a temporal variable: before and after the creation of an Attendance Center for Vulnerable Groups, created in 2004, to which the Police Station of the Woman of Aracaju passed if to integrate. My interest falls again into particular on the constitution of the Nucleus of Mediation of Conflicts, that functions at the Women’s Police Stations. I defend that the formal adoption of the instrument of mediation in a police space implies in a revision of the social function of the Women’s Police Stations. This assumes to change the conception of the police activity as mainly investigative and repressive, and to consider that the actions of mediation, assistance and counseling developed by the Women’s Police Stations are affirmatively constituted as proper actions of the Police.

“Borta farligt men hemma bäst?” : En studie om svenska kvinnors upplevelser om hot och rädslor i sitt resande / “At home is best, abroad is dangerous” : A study of Swedish women's experiences of threats and fears in their travelsHrafnsdóttir, Eva, Ek, Moa, Anders, Claudia January 2022 (has links)
There is a common Swedish saying that being abroad is good but at home is still always the best. Tourism has always existed in some form and is always going to exist in some form. As a consequence of the globalization of the last decades countries around the world have become closer than ever. Boarders are more open than ever before and pretty much everyone is allowed and capable to travel. However, some experience certain destinations as dangerous or scary. Especially females. This study aims to research which factors have the biggest impact when it comes to what makes women feel safe during their travels. What do women have as an experience of their earlier travels and what common fears exist? This study aims to seek answers on how much women's perception of safety weighs up in their choice of destination, what factors are most important and what factors cause women to refrain from a particular destination. Furthermore it is of interest how big of a difference there is between older and younger women's choice of travel. The study is based on a questionnaire as well as literature analysis. The questionnaire got a total of 224 answers from Swedish women of different ages. The results show divided opinions on just how important certain factors are for safety when choosing a destination. The most significant patterns that the results show is that women prefer to travel accompanied instead of alone. Furthermore, women's biggest factor when choosing a destination is comfort not safety, even though safety is still an important factor. The most influencing factor that creates the fear that women experience is mass media such as newspaper articles and social media.

Feminization and the Erosion of the Nuclear TabooHaughey, Orla January 2024 (has links)
This paper sets out to evaluate the influence of Russia’s increasing levels of hegemonic masculinity upon the erosion of the nuclear taboo in relation to increased threatening rhetoric, military preparedness, targeting of nuclear facilities, and withdrawal from existing arms control legislation which indicates potential first-use employment of nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Utilizing a dual research methodology of comparative process tracing and critical discourse analysis, gender theory is applied to assess various critical junctures and political focal points that contributed to a dual-partite path dependency of increasing hegemonic masculinity, coupled with the feminized securitization of Ukraine, and retaliatory masculinity as performed via state-sponsored employment of conflict-related sexual violence and nuclear posturing against Ukraine. The alternative explanation of “Escalate to De-escalate” is critically investigated; however, the empirical analysis provided by this paper suggests that the lack of gender-sensitive evaluation within this explanation fails to adequately account for the effect of increasing domestic hegemonic masculinity within Russia. Increased perception of an existential threat against Russian masculinity was found to contribute to an increased dependency on nuclear weapons. Ultimately, this paper forwards a novel explanatory causal mechanism, providing one of the first analyses of the nuclear taboo in relation to a gender-sensitive lens.

In the early years of the 21st century, Latin American female writers engendered female characters that deconstruct the traditional model of the mother while questioning the traditional structure of the bond between mothers and daughters. Judith Butler’s approach to performativity and the body, together with Jacques Derrida’s method of deconstruction are the theoretical background to the comparative analysis of the novels Nueve lunas (Gabriela Wiener), La débil mental (Ariana Harwicz) y La hija única (Guadalupe Nettel).
Butler argues that gender performativity stems from a construction anchored in a series of meaningful practices that have been perpetuated in the sociocultural discourse. This discourse, established under a patriarchal system, achieved its effect by naturalizing certain norms that have historically placed women in a subordinate position. In these novels, we find mothers who subvert the norms established by the dominant discourse, opening new perspectives to the future maternity of their daughters. Furthermore, the writers address motherhood beyond the binomial of good or bad mothers to expand the chain meaning of motherhood and take into account the present imprint of maternity.
Finally, this study considers the social claim that the novels raise regarding the regulations that are imposed on the maternal body to ensure successful reproduction and the violence associated with the breach of those regulations.

Words incarnate : contemporary women’s fiction as religious revisionRine, Abigail January 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates the prevalence of religious themes in the work of several prominent contemporary women writers—Margaret Atwood, Michèle Roberts, Alice Walker and A.L. Kennedy. Relying on Luce Irigaray’s recent theorisations of the religious and its relationship to feminine subjectivity, this research considers the subversive potential of engaging with religious discourse through literature, and contributes to burgeoning criticism of feminist revisionary writing. The novels analysed in this thesis show, often in violent detail, that the way the religious dimension has been conceptualised and articulated enforces negative views of female sexuality, justifies violence against the body, alienates women from autonomous creative expression and paralyses the development of a subjectivity in the feminine. Rather than looking at women’s religious revision primarily as a means of asserting female authority, as previous studies have done, I argue that these writers, in addition to critiquing patriarchal religion, articulate ways of being and knowing that subvert the binary logic that dominates Western religious discourse. Chapter I contextualises this research in Luce Irigaray’s theories and outlines existing work on feminist revisionist literature. The remaining chapters offer close readings of key novels in light of these theories: Chapter II examines Atwood’s interrogation of oppositional logic in religious discourse through her novel The Handmaid’s Tale. Chapter III explores two novels by Roberts that expose the violence inherent in religious discourse and deconstruct the subjection of the (female) body to the (masculine) Word. Chapters IV and V analyse the fiction of Kennedy and Walker respectively, revealing how their novels confront the religious denigration of feminine sexuality and refigure the connection between eroticism and divinity. Evident in each of these fictional accounts is a forceful critique of religious discourse, as well as an attempt to more closely reconcile foundational religious oppositions between divinity and humanity, flesh and spirit, and body and Word.

Constructing sexual danger in the Spanish media: A mixed-method analysis of a high-profile, non-intimate femicide case in El PaísSuros, Carlota January 2021 (has links)
From January 2016 until August 2021, at least 436 women or girls have been deliberately murdered in Spain by men. Non-intimate femicide (and, particularly, murder committed by complete strangers to the victim, to which this study refers as “stranger femicide”) has historically been, and still is, the most covered type of femicide in the media. This is also the case in the Spanish press, and more specifically, El País, the most read media outlet in the country. This thesis examines how El País framed Diana Quer’s case, the most high-profile, intensively covered femicide case in Spain in the past 5 years. It will also examine which ethical problems the reporting presented. From a feminist perspective and through a mixed-method approach of content analysis and frame analysis, this study examines 86 articles corresponding to the two informative peaks of Diana Quer’s case coverage. The periods go from August to October 2016, the first two months of her disappearance, and from December 2017 to January 2018, the 15 days following her killer’s arrest and crime confession. The findings reveal that the coverage in El País constructed a victimization iconography with DQ’s case that engendered cautionary tales and failed to address femicide as a social issue. The reporting also presented a series of critical ethical problems calling for a reformation of femicide reporting guidelines.
